Alley Thinks Big for Showtime's 'Fat Actress'
(Thursday, July 22 10:05 AM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) You would think that an eight-time Emmy nominee would have better things to talk about than her fluctuating weight. Or at least Kirstie Alley thinks so. The "Cheers" star's battle with public perceptions is at the center of "Fat Actress," a semi-autobiographical comedy in development at Showtime.
The premium cable network has ordered six episodes of "Fat Actress," which will blend the comedy and reality genres. Alley and the rest of the show's cast will work off of a story outline, but most of the dialogue will be improvised.

Alley is serving as co-creator and executive producer on the series, joining "7th Heaven" (and "Mad About You") veteran Brenda Hampton. "Fat Actress" will focus on Alley's quest for work, love and acceptance in Hollywood, as well as her battle with her weight and media awareness of her size.

"Kirstie Alley came to us -- with 24 dozen Krispy Kremes in hand -- and said she was so tired of seeing unflatteringly fat pictures of herself on the cover of The Star that it was time for her to send-up her own image as well as Hollywood's obsession with weight and beauty," says Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt.
Greenblatt continues, "Kirstie is an incredibly gifted comedian and a beautiful woman [regardless of her size], and we jumped at the chance to go behind the scenes of her life in a unique comedy series format."

A two-time Emmy winner for "Cheers" and the telefilm "David's Mother," Alley is looking forward to beginning production in September for a 2005 premiere.

"Finally a network that feels just like home," she says. "They don't give a damn how much I eat or how many men I sleep with as long as it's on camera."

I've always liked Kirstie (with the exception of her Pier One commericals) and I'm glad to see she's back to acting again regardless of her size. I don't get Showtime but i'm sure it'll be a good show.

True. That show was canceled after 2 seasons I think. Wasn't very good at all. Hopefully this will fair better for her.

Show sounds interesting....anything that challenges the stupid un-naturally skinny norm of Hollywood gets my support...

I never saw Veronica's Closet - I saw one little part once where Kirstie had developed a normal woman Barbie type doll...not super skinny...and they had some kid test it out in a play room...when they look in on her the kid has the "fat barbie" pulling a wagon like a horse or something...haha...it was amusing...

I saw this on TV last night and it's supposed to be like Curb Your Enthusiasm, which I love. No matter her size, she's a great actress and a VERY funny comedianne. I think she's always been beautiful, too, and she has gorgeous eyes. And from what I've seen, it does look like she lost a bit of weight.

She cracked me up last night on TV when she said "People look at me and wonder how I got so big. I know how I got so big, I ate too much!" Then she said that "it was like Christmas for me for four years and finally one day I just turned around and said 'Damn Kirstie, you've got a fat ass!'"

I'm just glad that Kirstie is comfortable enough with who she is. Who am I to judge her weight. I know this woman who had her stomach stapled (or tummy tucked, or something like that) and since losing the weight she thinks it's fine to criticize other woman for their weight. It's like she forgot what it was like, or she made the arrogant assumption that what felt right for her was automatically appropriate for the next overweight person. I just don't discuss it with her.

Last thing I read was that Kirstie was 307 pounds. The pics I saw I believe it.

There is being comfortable with your weight...being in your sensible weight range but not overweight...but being that overweight is just not good for you. You have to worry about your heart, getting diabetes, etc. It's not good.

Kirstie is stunning. She always was so pretty to me. I LOVE Cheers and I love her in it. I even watched Veronica's Closet and the Peir One commercials.

I don't care if she was a size 12...big deal. She spent most of Cheers that size I think. But 307? That's extreme. I hope she loses some weight before she gets sick...

You don't seem to get that it's not about being comfortable with her wieght. She shouldn't be comfortable with her weight. It's slowly killing her. Kirstie Alley has plenty of money for plastic surgery, gastric bypass or whatever. It's not about the physical though, I think it's more something that's going on in her head.
I still don't get how you connect that with Stevie being overweight in the 90's.

You don't seem to get that the premise of the show is that Kirstie is being snubbed for the weight she is judged by, and that sounds a lot like Street Angel Stevie to me. A lot of people here have said that she sounded great on that tour but the press focused on her looks, and Stevie said the judgment on her weight almost forced her off the stage.
And I don't advocate pushing plastic surgery or gastric bypass on someone I don't even know. I'm not her doctor or even a doctor.

Monday, August 2, 2004 Posted: 10:42 PM EDT (0242 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Unashamed of their size, fed up with fat jokes, and angry at the national obsession with dieting, overweight activists are mounting a feisty protest movement against what it calls the medical establishment's campaign against obesity.

"We're living in the middle of a witch hunt and fat people are the witches," said Marilyn Wann of San Francisco, a militant member of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. "It's gotten markedly worse in the last few years because of the propaganda that fatness, a natural human characteristic, is somehow a form of disease."

The association, known as NAAFA, holds its annual convention starting Wednesday in Newark, New Jersey, bringing together activists for social events and workshops on self-acceptance, political advocacy and the "fat liberation" movement.

"I hope we can be a viable force of sanity in the midst of hysteria," said NAAFA spokeswoman Mary Ray Worley of Madison, Wisconsin. "I've found allies in all kinds of unexpected places, but overall there's a lot of animosity. Some people act like obesity is the next worst thing after terrorism."

The convention comes as the movement is scrambling to counter federal government pronouncements that obesity is a "critical public health problem" costing more than $100 billion and 300,000 lives per year.

Jeannie Moloo, an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman who counsels overweight clients at her nutrition practice in Sacramento, California, empathizes with the activists' fight against bias, but says they should be wary of oversimplifying obesity-related health issues.

"Some people can be overweight all their lives and not end up with diabetes or heart disease or hypertension," Moloo said. "But the majority are probably going to develop one of these life-altering conditions."

Fat-acceptance groups were dismayed when federal officials announced last month that Medicare was discarding its declaration that obesity isn't a disease. The policy change will likely prompt overweight Americans covered by Medicare to file medical claims for treatments such as stomach surgery and diet programs.

"Obesity is not a disease," insisted Allen Steadham, director of the Austin, Texas-based International Size Acceptance Association. "All this does is open the door for the diet and bariatric surgery industries to make a potentially tremendous profit."

Most fat-acceptance activists endorse the concept of eating healthy food and exercising regularly, but they oppose any fixation on losing weight and contend that more than 95 percent of diets fail. They also decry the rapid growth of stomach-shrinking surgery; the number of such procedures has quadrupled to 100,000 annually since 1998.

Wann depicts bariatric surgery as "stomach amputation" that imposes anorexia on patients and exposes them to long-term risks. Kelly Bliss, a self-described "full-figured fitness instructor" from Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, predicts that future generations will disapprovingly look back on stomach surgery as "comparable to lobotomies."

Bliss, who coaches clients by phone and in fitness classes, subscribes to a philosophy called "health at every size" -- preaching that health, fitness and self-esteem can be achieved independent of weight.

"There's a war on obese people, and I'm treating the casualties - people whose hearts are being ripped out," Bliss said.

NAAFA and others have tried to combat what they see as rampant discrimination against fat people, but progress has been sporadic. Southwest Airlines, for example, resisted protests targeting its policy of requiring large passengers to purchase a second ticket if they can't fit in a single seat.

"People want to fight for their rights, but there's a lot of shame involved," Steadham said. "It takes a whole lot of determination to stick through it to the end."

A few cities, including San Francisco, explicitly outlaw weight discrimination. Michigan is the only state to do so, but its Civil Rights Department said only five of 1,696 job discrimination complaints filed in 2003 involved weight.

Walter Lindstrom, a San Diego attorney specializing in weight-discrimination cases, said overweight plaintiffs usually must prove that acts of bias against them are covered by federal laws prohibiting discrimination against disabled people.

"These cases are more difficult from a proof standpoint, and also because you're dealing with a very unpopular class of clients," Lindstrom said. "Juries are generally disgusted with your average size-related plaintiff. You have to get past that, and have them see the plaintiff as someone with a true medical problem."

Many fat-acceptance activists were heartened by this year's publication of "The Obesity Myth" by University of Colorado law professor Paul Campos, who contends that diet promoters, drug companies and weight-loss surgeons have whipped up an irrational panic over weight.

Campos shares many of the activists' views but says their effectiveness has been limited.

"The movement has found itself marginalized by drawing its membership and leadership from the far extreme of obesity," he said. "It will be more successful if it can attract the two-thirds of Americans who are being told by the government that they weigh too much -- the I-want-to-lose-20-pounds crowd who are starting to feel a certain amount of resentment from the constant haranguing they're getting."

As much as I love Kirstie, I don't believe that for a second. She's a tall woman, so it's not as noticeable when she puts on weight. But she was in a TV movie a few months ago and was huge. Still a beautiful woman, but huge. But from what I've seen of her recently, she's lost a lot of weight and still looks great.

She is incredibly tall. Even though being heavier can put you at serious risk for many health issues, she has little kids she's running around after and I'm sure she's stayed active. Clearly she cared enough about her health to lose the weight that she did. Good for her

Adolescence. One day I just woke up and said to myself that if I didn't lose it then, I'd be that weight for my entire life and die at forty. I was a skinny kid, but when I turned twelve, I ballooned. When I was fifteen, I was huge and that's when I knew I had to lose it. Now, I can eat whatever I like and miraculously not gain weight, but I do the South Beach Diet just to be heart healthy and keep low cholesterol. The good thing is that I lost it when I was still growing, so I have no stretch marks whatsoever.

My brother was a little like that at a younger age. Went from being huge from babyhood to being super-thin by ten. These days he's not as skinny, but still taller and thinner than I.
I never had to watch what I eat until I moved to Houston. So much less walking for necessity, for the first time in my life my metabolism has slowed. Colleagues walk and swim every day, and I might do the walking and running with them this year. I won't do weights and swim.

I don't like to swim because of the chlorine (it fries your hair and your skin). I started pilates a little while back and love it. It took place of running, which I used to do everyday, and works even better!!

I get a chlorine allergy from my mom. Didn't keep me from lifeguarding/teaching swim for years and swimming every day in college, but these days I don't get my head wet in the pool at all. Plus they say swimming makes the muscles too loose for tennis (if I ever take up tennis again) and I know it negatively affects my weight training.

I don't buy it. She's not as wealthy as she once was because of that prince Stevens she married who literally stole her from her, but she's not hurting for any money. She still gets hefty checks from Cheers' syndication runs the last I read and she supposedly hit it big when she invested in MP3.com and bailed right after making $40 million.

Here's the part I was talking about:
ALLEY: I had depression for about 10 days -- well, I'll call it depression. But I'll call more humiliation. I -- one day I woke up and I went -- well, I owed the IRS some money -- my accountant and myself had made a little error, like, a decimal point. And I went, oh my God, now I'm going to be poor, old, and I'm fat. OK. I am done.

So I stayed in the bed under my covers, except for when my kids would come home from school, I'd be like, hey, how you doing? Good to see you. How did you do in school today? But when they were gone, I was just -- I was just hiding. And then one day and I went -- I just woke up, and that's when I created the show.

KING: Really, coming out of that?

ALLEY: I just said, you know what? You either throw in the towel or you know -- and you know, I used to have this option sitting there -- this is so sick, but I'll tell you. OK.

I had this option sitting there when -- you know, if you don't want to act anymore, you don't want to do this, you can marry a billionaire. It's so -- I know, that's so sick. But then I went, OK, you're fat. You're not going to get a billionaire. Billionaires don't want fat girls. So then I was freaking out because I was like, OK, if you don't want to work anymore and the billionaire's out, what the hell are you going to do? So I freaked out. And then I thought, Do you want the billionaire? I thought, Maybe but later. OK. But I do -- I know that I still want to act and I still want to work. So that's when I got creative.

British Pounds-a-Plenty
LONDON, March 26, 2004

For those of you who like your sopranos plump, I bring bad tidings.

The Royal Opera House, here in London, has just sacked Deborah Voight, one of the best known voices in the musical world. Miss Voight is in a huff. And Miss Voight is big in opera. That's the point.

When they tried to squeeze her ample diaphragm into a natty black costume for the part of Ariadne, things became ... how, shall we say ... a little overcrowded. This opera was penned by Richard Strauss and Ariadne is the lead role. But the costume could not accommodate the extra rolls that came as part of the Deborah Voight package. All 250 pounds of it. And instead of ordering a few extra miles of dress-making cloth, the opera house ditched the diva. A cruel blow for a lady who sings like an angel, but weighs like a Sumo wrestler.

In London, you see, size is everything. Even our government is obsessed with obesity. They are dishing out vegetable vouchers to poor families and pregnant women in an effort to woo them off fatty foods. We are, apparently, fat too busy putting the Great back into Great Britain ... with our mouths. In the recent past it has been my sad duty to report in this slot some of the results of our national gluttony ... dear departed overweight relatives too big to cram into the cremators, for example. Wobbling swathes of my once-thin fellow countrymen now gobble their way to blocked arteries and early graves courtesy of American-style fast food.

Did you know that there are parts of Britain which now bounce up and down by four inches at least twice a day? It is not a joke. It is a geological fact recently proven by global positioning satellites. The only logical explanation is too much weight. Our politicians are alarmed. If we don't start shedding pounds fast, it could lead to a national public spending crisis. As ever, we blame America.

But back at the Royal Opera House, it's all over. The fat lady won't be singing after all.

I've said it before about celebs...I dont feel a damn bit sorry for them. They've got it made..millions...nice homes...few worries when it comes to finances.

You know what makes me sick? I was flipping channels the other day and actually saw Kirstie on Oprah. I watched a bit because i was blown away at how "large" she was. A few minutes into the show I realize Oprah is totally redoing Kirstie's kitchen, giving her the "dream kitchen" she always wanted. UNBELIEVABLE. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there that need more help than that woman. Charity work for celebrities!? Ridiculous. Oprah and her team of crack heads can lick my sack. ...Yeah, that's how mad that made me.

Oprah didn't pay for that, Kirstie did. Oprah simply recommended her designer.

How about when Kirstie was talking like the dwarfs she had staying at her house. I was actually embarrassed for her.

I think happiness stems from much more than just financial success, so I do feel sorry for some of them. I'm not more shedding tears for them than for the many folks who are in truly horrible situations in this world, but there are celebrities in miserable circumstances, no doubt. JMO
