Linda Ronstadt apparently got what she wanted -- to be 86'd from the Aladdin.
In a bizarre performance notable for its bridge-burning comments, Ronstadt inflamed more than her Aladdin audience on Saturday by taking potshots at Las Vegas and dedicating "Desperado" to "Fahrenheit 9/11" filmmaker Michael Moore.
When her show was over, the Aladdin had her checked out of her room and escorted off the premises.
Many walked out during the show, one concertgoer tossed a cocktail on her poster, others defaced her posters and the box office was "a mob scene" of people seeking refunds, according to an Aladdin spokeswoman.
"It's amazing how ugly it got," said Tyri Squyres, director of public relations at the Aladdin.
Ronstadt was a one-woman heat wave.
"To be clear, the Aladdin does not condone the comments made by Ms. Ronstadt," Squyres said by e-mail. "Ms. Ronstadt was hired to entertain the guests of the Aladdin, not to espouse her political views. Following her performance she was escorted out of the hotel and immediately checked out of her room. And she will not be welcomed back."
In an interview with the R-J's Mike Weatherford before the show, Ronstadt said with a laugh: "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back."

This is too funny. I love Linda, even though she has gotten very eccentric in the past few years. This story just cracks me up.

Wait, does that mean she thought 9/11 was crap? As in "come to your senses" Michael Moore? Or the opposite? I always thought she was liberal.

She dedicated another song called "Get Out of Town" to Bush, then praised Fahrenheit 9/11. She was dedicating "Desperado" to Moore about the Rethugs.

Yeah, that would have made more sense.
I love Linda too, and she has become more outspoken about the things that piss her off in recent years. She is as candid as it gets when you get her going in an interview, however, she rarely gives them anymore. I hear she lives basically as a recluse these days in Tuscon with her kids. Her voice is still as amazing as ever, I'd love to see her live.

Linda has always been outspoken. But lately she's been largely worshipped by an older generation of fans, and not the rock & rollers. Here's Linda speaking up on the lastest flap.
http://www.ronstadt-linda.com/SanDiegoUnionTribune.htm
I think she has a right to say whatever she wants politically, and believe the audience is way out of control. Hopefully she will make her point soon. I think it would be cool if those here could go if only to support her right to speak out.

I don't think so. :( Linda has such a high voice and Stevie has such a low voice that it wouldn't sound right. Linda doesn't have any rasp to her voice, whereas someone like Sheryl Crow does. I hated Too Far From Texas not just because it was a bad song but because her voice did not go well with Natalie's. She blended perfectly with Macy Gray, IMO, because Gray has a really low voice.

Yes, it was mentioned in the Q&A here on The Penguin (Waddy Wachtel). Waddy said he'd like to get Stevie and Linda to perform together. I think it would be a great mix, and maybe get Linda to pull out and dust off some of her old cast off rock and roll songs. While a great mix, I guess the tour would be high on estrogen though! I'd go to it though!
I believe both Linda and Stevie also dated J.D. Souther too, who's sometimes referred to as another Eagle.

Ha! I think I would have booed her too in a half- hearted kind of way. I just don't dig performers making political speeches when I'm there to hear them sing. Put it in a song and sing it to me, don't preach it to me. I wouldn't have walked out, because I'm getting my money's worth for the ticket I bought. Honestly, I think I would have just had another drink and had a good time, and I definitley wouldn't have wasted an expensive "cocktail" on one of "Lovely Linda's" posters. However, I think she went a little too far when she made the comment about Republicans not making her feel "warm" knowing they were there. I'm collecting all my Ronstadt records and preparing them for the sacrificial pyre. ;)

This part is the best, IMO:
"And I think if someone masterminds an attack on people you love and murders thousands of them, you go after that person until you find him. Osama bin Laden is six feet, eight inches tall, he wears white robes and he reportedly suffers from kidney failure, requiring him to be on dialysis. I haven’t researched this, but I assume there aren’t many dialysis machines in Afghanistan. So wouldn’t it make sense to stake out the ones that are there? He could have a portable one, which would require a generator. That should make him easy to spot, too.
But, alas, no one seems to be looking for Osama."

Regardless if she was a Rethug, I'd still love her because she can sing her ass off. But judging from the known Rethugs in the entertainment industry, I really never cared for any of them even before I knew their politics. Ahnuld? Nope. Bruce Willis? Nope. Bo Derek? Hell no. As far as Linda goes, wow. She is an amazing singer. I just purchased "We Ran," a compilation of Linda covering old 50's and 60's tunes that was put out around 1998 I believe. Her voice is still extremely strong, beautiful and rich. Even though she was going for a doo-wop kind of album, the songs actually came out sounding more akin to the California pop stuff she made in the 70's, which is great because I was thinking, hmmmm...I love Linda but I HATE doo-wop so this might be hard for me to deal with being more of a fan of her 70's stuff. Another fabulous, more recent, album she put out around the same time is the "Western Wall," with Emmylou Harris as co-collaborator. This is actually one of my favorite albums of all time. Linda and Emmylou's voices blend sublimely (of course) and the songs Emmylou penned for the album are some of the best she's ever written.
And as far as Stevie and Linda's voices not blending...I think they might be able to pull of a duet. Linda has an elastic range, she can go very high but she can also sing wonderfully mid-range and low. Stevie's range is shot so Linda would have to sing around her, which I think would work. However, a more fitting pair in my opinion would be Linda Ronstadt and Ann Wilson...talk about your belters! Those two would blow the roof off the place, and I of course would be in heaven  .

Sure, hypocrisy is all over the place, but that wasn't my point, and it wasn't addressed at any of your posts, though I do appreciate your view. Hopefully it was meant light-heartedly anyway, but I was just taken back a bit by the fact that before it was clarified Linda was speaking favorably for Michael Moore anyone would have a loss of love for her. If you have an appreciation for a persons profession, their political views shouldn't change that, unless they are a politician. Also, my post didn't take any political parties stance. It was just a generic eyebrow raiser and not intended to incite any editorializing of one party versus the other.

What about Stevie and Ann again?
Julia was on for maybe two or three seasons with her husband Brad Hall, the blond guy. In the Joe Piscopo days. (A time gone way by.)
You've probably seen some of her skeches. Eddy Murphy's cigar-chomping Gumby Christmas/It's Christmas Dammit! Special - she played Marie Osmond who makes out with Donny while performing.
She did an un-funny recurring sketch with another woman as eastern European accented talk show hosts, and an un-funny sketch on how ridiculous the word Chanukah is. (Ironic since she's a relative of Alfred Dreyfus of the Dreyfus Affair.)
Usually she played the straight woman stiff, like she did in Christmas Vacation.

Ronstadt Says She'll Continue To Praise Moore
http://apnews1.iwon.com/article/20040721/D83V9KI00.html
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Linda Ronstadt said she'll continue to praise Michael Moore and his film "Fahrenheit 9/11" on stage despite an angry reaction at a Las Vegas concert.
"This is an election year," she told the Los Angeles Times Tuesday. "I want people to get their head up out of their mashed potatoes and learn something about the issues and go and vote. ... I'm not telling them how to vote. I'm saying, get information about the issues."
When Ronstadt praised Moore and his documentary Saturday at the Aladdin hotel-casino, some in the audience stormed out of the theater and tore down concert posters.
The casino's president said he didn't allow the singer back in her luxury suite afterward and she was escorted off the property.

Anyone else find it odd that Miss Ronstadt was escorted out of the venue, yet nothing happened at all to the people who committed acts of vandalism and civil disobedience? Rather ironic.

Raitt Dedicates Song to Bush
STOCKHOLM, Sweden(AP) Winding up her summer tour across Europe, Bonnie Raitt drew thunderous applause at the Stockholm Jazz Festival for dedicating a classic to President George Bush.
"We're gonna sing this for George Bush because he's out of here, people!" Raitt crowed Tuesday night before she launched into the opening licks of "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)," a cover that was featured on her 1979 album, "The Glow."
The song, written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, has been sung by several notable performers, including Mable John and Lou Rawls.
Raitt's comments resulted in a round of applause and even whistles from among the estimated 3,000 concertgoers at the Swedish capital's annual jazz event held on the banks of the downtown Skeppsholmen island.
Swedes are skeptical of Bush, and the Scandinavian country refused to support his efforts in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Miss Bonnie is soo cool :xoxo:
And as far as the vandalism at the Aladdin goes...Violence supposedly in the name of America and it's "freedom" is the point of the current regime. I'm not suprised.

I love Bonnie, she's a true talent that I always felt deserved MUCH more success than she even had with "Nick Of Time." I totally love her and her last album (Silver Lining) is always in my stereo.
Now, no one can go to a Bonnie concert and be shocked that she said somehting political. She's very out there when it comes to politics. Her and Willie Nelson held a joint concert to support Kucinich.

Shw was great and so was he. He played Take It Easy, which kind of surprised me. I think she did Angel From Montgomery, which I think Stevie could do a killer rendition of.

Thanks to negotiations today (July 21) between the Recording Artists Coalition (RAC) and the prospective new owners of Las Vegas's Alladin Theater, expect to see RAC member Linda Ronstadt back at the venue this fall -- with filmmaker Michael Moore on backup vocals.
The singer was the recipient of heavy-handed treatment Saturday (July 17) when she dedicated the Eagles' "Desperado" (co-written by RAC co-founder Don Henley) to Moore, the director of the anti-President Bush documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11."
News reports said some in the audience booed, stormed out of the theater and tore down posters. Reports also said Ronstadt was escorted off the premises without being allowed to return to her dressing room, which she has subsequently denied.
After a day of negotiations, the prospective new owner of the venue, Robert Earl, Chairman and CEO of Planet Hollywood International, Inc., issued the following statement:
"We hope to be approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission to become the new owners of the Aladdin Resort in Las Vegas as early as September 1, 2004. Upon the assumption of ownership, and with a new management team in place, we would like to offer the use of the Theatre of Performing Arts to Linda Ronstadt for a second concert and further to take Michael Moore up on his offer to join her on stage to introduce her and sing a song."
"We respect artists' creativity and support their rights to express themselves," said Earl. "We were very sorry to hear about the unfortunate circumstances of this past Saturday night and want to make it clear that Planet Hollywood has never, in our 13 year history, restricted any artists' right to free speech and we will continue with that policy once we take ownership."

Reports of casino incident not accurate, Ronstadt says
DANIEL BUCKLEY
Tucson Citizen
Singer Linda Ronstadt was not asked to leave a Las Vegas casino Saturday after she endorsed Michael Moore's controversial film "Fahrenheit 9/11," the Tucson native told the Tucson Citizen yesterday.
And she was not booed off the stage by a concert crowd that had erupted in mayhem, she said.
Speaking by phone from San Francisco, Ronstadt said that she left the Aladdin Resort & Casino immediately after the concert and was not aware that the management was irritated by her comments until an hour after she left the show.
Aladdin management declined to comment on the incident yesterday, referring the Citizen to a statement issued Monday.
The statement reads, in part:
"Ms. Ronstadt was hired to entertain the guests of the Aladdin, not to espouse her political views. In an effort to diffuse the situation, Linda Ronstadt was asked to leave the property immediately following her performance."
Ronstadt says she has made the same pitch about Moore's film at each previous show in her summer tour, just before the encore, "Desperado." The audience reaction has been a mixture of boos and cheers, she said.
"I've been doing it all across the country, and I've never seen an audience response like this in my life. This country is so completely polarized," she said.
"As soon as I start singing, ‘Desperado,' they love (the song) and they start cheering, which they've done all through my career. That's how that works, and then I finish the song and I leave."
The Los Angeles Times and Associated Press reported that Ronstadt was escorted off the property, not allowed to return to her room and booed off the stage and that people were throwing drinks by the close of her show.
None of those things happened, she said.
By her account, she had originally planned to fly out after the show to the next city on the tour but a sinus problem prompted her doctor to cancel that plan. One of her aides then booked her a room at the Aladdin, which she never saw.
After the concert, she went backstage and was about to head to the car provided for her by the Aladdin when she was confronted by an Aladdin employee.
"This woman comes huffing up to me and says, ‘I'm afraid I can't let you leave.' I said, ‘What?' And she said, ‘You can't leave yet because the owner is on his way over here to talk to you.' " the singer said.
She declined and left for the Ritz-Carlton in her tour bus when the employee said the Aladdin car would not be allowed to leave, Ronstadt said.
"I thought she was going to read me my Miranda rights or make me start writing things on the blackboard," she said.
"I didn't know they were mad at me until we were gone, and I didn't know what they were mad at me about until about an hour later, when apparently they called up one of the people that was traveling with us and went, ‘She's talking about Michael Moore, and this is a place for entertainment, not politics,' " Ronstadt said.
She has received support from a number of other celebrities, and the Aladdin's new owner, the owners of Hard Rock Cafe, called to ask her back, she said.
"Michael Moore called me and said he would go with me. We could sing, ‘America the Beautiful' together and he would screen his movie for free for anyone who wants to come and see it," she said.
"Irving Azoff, who is the Eagles' manager, immediately pulled all his acts from the Aladdin. I've had phone calls and messages from all over. Elton John sent me flowers last night. Keith Richards, Sting - the list goes on and on of people pouring in support."
She insists she was only trying to get people to think.
"I think (celebrities) should try to get people to think. I think they need to bring information to the public, she said. "The American media has been completely hijacked by corporate interests. The news is so biased, and we've got to get it through any way that we can.
"Now I don't think somebody should take my word. Because I'm a singer doesn't necessarily make me an expert in world politics, though I'm well read. But I think my obligation at this point is to try to steer people into just thinking."
She notes that while some concert promoters have asked that she not endorse Moore's movie at their venues, there is no language in her contract prohibiting her from doing so.
"I'll damn well say what I please, as I always have," she says. "And if they cancel my show, they'll just be doing me a favor. They'll still have to pay me, and I could use a day off. I have no idea how ticket sales are going, and I never worry about record sales."
Apparently not everyone is upset with the soft-rock star.
Ronstadt sang to a full-house Tuesday night at Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, and the crowd reserved its longest and loudest ovation for her endorsement of Moore's film, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday.
The Los Angeles Times contributed to this report.
