View Full Version : The great idols you don't like

There are some singers/bands that are very very popular and admired. However you don't like them, they never got you crazy. For example I remember some ledgies who didn't like Beatles. I love Beatles. Lot of great idols really touch my soul with their music (like the Mac, Pink Floyd, Doors, Queen, Pet Shop Boys, Bee Gees, Alan Parson Project)
So my list could be:
Cat Stevens: All my friends love him. Don't know why but I never get caught by his songs. They make me sleep.
Bob Dylan: Another greatguy that I don't like. However I do like Blowing in the Wind, but buy Joan Baez
The Who: I tried to listen some of their songs, but nothing happened (I discoverd this group after they splitted up)
Janis Joplin: Though some compare her with Stevie, Janis was never my style.
Alanis Morrisette: Yeah, some good songs, but, again, nothing happes when I listen to her.

Stevie compared to Janis? Hell no. As much as I love Stevie, I don't think she's capable of putting THAT much of herself into the hands of the audience.
My List:
The Beatles: Never liked them one bit. Very overrated.
The Eagles: Oy, my bleeding ears.
Elvis: Always sounded like he was trying to win the top prize at a karaoke bar.
Bee Gees: My, my, the undies are on way too tight.

Elvis is getting a lot of press over here at the moment due to the fact it's the 50th anniversary of when he cut his first ever record, That's Alright.
"That's Alright Mama", actually. :)

I love Austin Powers...although, I haven't seen the third one. Need to rent that.
Beatles - Overrated is right.
Rolling Stones - Zzzz......
Bob Dylan - OMG, whoever the frick told him to become a singer...should be shot. Dear sweet Moses!
Led Zeppelin - Stairway is okay, but other than that...eh. Whatevah.
Elton John - Decent songwriter as I love Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, but his voice...eeeegads!! I prefer to hear George Michael sing it.
Janis Joplin - Agree, she does nothing for me. Too screechy.
Garth Brooks - Bleck!! I remember in high school, he was everywhere and the ropers at school wore his shirts and those ugly a$$ cowboy shirts, just ugh.

Doesn't make his music any good. ;)

In the words of Public Enemy, "Elvis was a hero to most, But he never meant sh*t to me..."
"...'cos straight down the racist was simple and plain, Motherf*ck him and John Wayne".

that GB nerved me bigtime when he was on top of the country game...But at least he buried sticketbastards ticket monopoly for the concert goin' residents of OKC (His hometown area), For that he has my respect.
Another artist I never seen to appeal of was Elvis...Didnt do much for me whatsoever, Nor ever will.

great, thanks a lot, my head just fell off... Still, I will NEVER like the beatles a lot!! I refuse to be more than neutral when one of their songs comes on the radio!!! I will only break into singing when that one song (that Aerosmith covered) comes on. That is my promise to you, your silly curses can't break me!!!

Add me as another who think the Beatles are overrated. I much prefer their solo material.
-Sting. I don't like his voice, nor is he sexy to me.
-Price, though he is talented.
-Barbra Streisand
-Dave Matthews Band

And that's what the intent of this thread is, to post our opinions about artists we don't give a rat's ass about. ;)

- Phil Collins
- Sting
- Paula Abdul (as a performer)
- Michael Jackson
- Prince
- Bruce Springsteen
- Peter Gabriel
- The Cure
- Kiss (But I loved their movie.)
- Celine Dion (I'm one of the very few who thinks Barbra is much better.)
- Willie Nelson (Nothing against him or his songs, I just don't care for his voice.)
- Paul McCartney (Though as a whole the Beatles are fine.)
- The Beach Boys (Liked them when I was little. Kokomo changed that, and now I don't care for their sound now.)
- Jennifer Lopez
That ought to do it. I've probably ticked off every other Ledgie by now. ;)

I could never hate Robert Smith and his Cure....because he killed Barbara Steisand in South Park.
All hail Robert Smith!!!!

Personally I tend to almost never be a fan of the people everyone else loves. It'd be easier to list the idols I do like. But offhand, it's not so much that I hate any of these as that I've never really gotten what makes them so special to so many others:
Elvis
The Beatles (shocking but true...never understood what made them so different from so many other bands)
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Eagles
Led Zeppelin
Mariah Carey
Prince (I like "When Doves Cry" but other than that, I'm unimpressed)
Nirvana or any of the grunge gods
Dave Matthews Band
Metallica
Michael Bolton
Toby Keith (ok, him I actually detest)
Tim McGraw, except for a few songs
The entire genre of rap
Gotta agree to some degree about Garth, at least as far as most of his music goes. But his support for gay rights, especially as a country singer, keeps him from earning a place on this list.

Beach Boys O I hate every song they have ever done! There harmonies are terrible

I'll add the Judds as well. They played the "Freedom Over Texas" special on the 4th and it was aired. Naomi annoys me. Her personality is just so old school cheesey onstage, IMO.
And I agree with whoever listed Mariah.

Here's a few of mine, there's more, but my little brain doesn't want to think too hard this morning:
The Rolling Stones (I never have understood people's fascination with them)
Mariah Carey (bleh)
Bob Dylan (as a singer, he should NEVER be allowed to sing!)
Prince
Bruce Springsteen
John Cougar Mellencamp
The Beach Boys
Led Zeppelin
Sheryl Crow (ducking)
I'm sure that last one makes me pretty unpopular, but I don't get her at all. I think Sheryl is mediocre at best.

"Beatles" and "overrated" are two words that cannot go in a sole sentence. The Beatles can't possibly be overrated, and that's pure and simple truth, a FACT (and not a matter of opinion). I'll second ChiliD and Lux on this one.

Have quite a few:
Mariah Carey: I don't care if she can hit every note, I just don't feel anything when she sings.
Celine Dion: I like her, BUT I think Barbra Strisand is better (Love ppl and you don't bring me flowers)
J.Lo: should I even dignify her by listing her?
Britney Spears: see above.
Norah Jones, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, John Meyer: a couple of good songs and what else?
The Who: They are okay but I preffer Zepplin
Blondie: I LOVE Blondie, BUT she does get a bit overrated...
Micheal Jackson: early music is fine, but there are just to many "odd" things about him now.
Nirvana: Died at the right time.
Okay I'll stop now, I'm not going into list the artists that I can't fairly evaluate, but just have no general interest in.
Oh and as a sidenote the Beatles can't be overrated, (I LOVE their music) one may not like them, but music as we know it would be very different w/o them.

This is supposed to be who we hate. I despise Barbara Streisand, Better Midler and every single diva except Stevie, who makes the cut because, well because she's Stevie (and she stands next to Lindsey). I also hate all these modern manufactured pop artists. I don't care which one, I hate them all. Pick up an instrument and play something original goddamn you!
Sorry, Bette doesn't get nearly enough praise, IMO. I don't think anyone else can take someone else's material and make it so personal as if she wrote it five minutes ago. But, I know a lot of folks don't like her, so... ;)

Okay first I do LOVE Blondie, and I remember defending her to a friend. What I mean though is when the do the polls and Debbie Harry ends up at the top of the lists for "females in rock/music" and people like Stevie, and Grace to name a couple get ranked so far below her. I guess it's more the others being under-rated that bothers me.

You mean aside from that almost ever artist cites them as an influence and a reason of starting music. Well I asked my mom who was lucky enough to live through the 60s and basically she said they had such a profusion of music, it was happy, and they were adored by the masses, they were the first to do music videos, concept albums, have eastern influence, and radically change fashion, they were one of the first mass marketed bands. They also were one of the first bands to be so innovative in the studio (Tommorow Never Knows/ A Day in The Life/ Within You Without You), one of the first to write their own songs, start their own record company. They were also one of the first to be big enough to not be conservative and listen to the record companies.

There wouldn't have been a "British invasion" in the first place... so perhaps there wouldn't be "pop" music whatsoever. Or bands directed to massive audiences. Perhaps great bands, heard by their neighbourhood and perhaps their city. And some rockers that only experts would know. This is just to begin with something.
