Army to recall former military members
Tuesday, June 29, 2004 Posted: 12:43 PM EDT (1643 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army is preparing to notify about 5,600 retired and discharged soldiers who are not members of the National Guard or Reserve that they will be involuntarily recalled to active duty for possible service in Iraq or Afghanistan, Army officials said Tuesday.

It marks the first time the Army has called on the Individual Ready Reserve, as this category of reservists is known, in substantial numbers since the 1991 Gulf War.

The move reflects the continued shortage of troops available to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to fight the ongoing war on terrorism as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lt. Gen. Frank Hagenbeck, the Army's deputy chief of staff for personnel, said earlier this month of the Army's troop strength, "We are stretched but we have what we need."

Pentagon officials have echoed that statement explaining that while the military is reaching deep into its resources, war planners have long had contingency plans such as this for when troops are really needed.

Several hundred members of the ready reserve have volunteered for active-duty service since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Those who are part of the involuntary call up are likely to be assigned to National Guard or Reserve units that have been mobilized for duty in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to Army officials. An announcement is planned for Wednesday.

Members of Congress were being notified of the decision Tuesday, the officials said.

Unlike members of the National Guard and Reserve, the individual reservists do not perform regularly scheduled training.

Any former enlisted soldier who did not serve at least eight years on active duty is in the Individual Ready Reserve pool, as are all officers who have not resigned their commission.

The Army has been reviewing its list of 118,000 eligible individual reservists for several weeks in search of qualified people in certain high-priority skill areas like civil affairs.

I wonder if 'mercuns will still view war as a TV show or video game when the draft is reinstated.

Who said something about riots yesterday?

What's the age minimum for drafting? I'm only 16, but I've been absolutely petrified of the thought of being drafted and having to fight in a war ever since I first heard about it.

That's because we're living in a totally different culture than we were in the sixties and seventies, the last time people were in such despair and so enraged was during Vietnam. We need to head this thing off before it becomes another Vietnam. For the times that we're living in now, more than half is better than we could even dream of.

with bronchitis at least 4-5 times a year. With my current throat ailments it has become a royal pain in the ass.

Every year when the weather goes from a cooler dryer air (Fall) to the humid (Summer) I fall ill, Deb even knows when this occurs and can tell ya how bad it can be. I have been to way too many Dr. offices due to my "chronic bronchitis".

Going from warm outside air to cool air conditioned inside has the same effect and triggers my bronchitis so I have to be very careful in the summer months, Or I can end up in the hospital (I have a tad bit of bronchitis right now. The clinic where Deb had her Pet Scan today thermostat was set to a ice cold 60 degrees...I was sitting in their waiting area freezing to death, So much my teeth were chattering.)

It's because of your female icon that confused me. It is stupid since my icon is the opposite sex too.

You really think they would exempt people just for being gay? Unless they just sent everyone who was gay into specific living quarters (which would most likely end up being a big orgy)

Christopher, please tell me you're kidding. Wake up and smell the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy ! :wavey:

I can suggest some enlightening reading for you - Conduct Unbecoming by Randy Shilts. That'll show you what the military does to gays in the military.
Pretty horrifying stuff.

I am not going near the orgy statement, considering the colorful stories told by many of my buddies who are active/former military.

Don't Ask Don't Tell.

All a gay man would have to do is walk into a recruiters office wearing a Judy Garland t-shirt. :wavey:

I have a friend who was in the army stationed in South Korea. His commanding officer was gay, and most of the company was gay. It was an "understood" thing and no one was outed to military authorities. However, if military authorities had actually known, their asses would have been booted out immediately.

Yeah, if you claim to be gay- you can't get in the military.

Two of my closest friends got married at the Four Seasons. The ceremony was outdoors. In June. In Austin. But I'm still friends with them.

There's a remote chance I'll be there on the Fourth, but at this point I doubt it.

And that's all you get. ;)

Isn't that illegal? It seems almost like racism, only dealing with a different issue. However, it is kind of a lucky break because who wants to be drafted anyways?

And I was joking about the orgy thing but I seriously had no idea that the military was so strict about homosexuals.

And Dissention, when you are drafted you have to go in and get approved? I just assumed they sent you some paperwork and you had to report for duty? When would a person spill the beans that they are gayer then the day is long or as you said where a Judy Garland shirt!

You usually have to contact your local recruitment office once your number's picked. Instead of calling, paint your toenails red, get some Prada sandals, and visit the office in person immediately. Sing "The Trolley Song" for added effect. :wavey:

Prada sandals are a pretty big investment. Some red jellies from the upcoming Hillary Duff line at Target could do the trick for the more budget minded.

BTW, what's the Trolley Song ?

From "Meet Me In St. Louis"!

"I went to spend a jolly
Hour on the trolley
And lost my heart instead...

Clang-clang-clang went the trolley
Ding-ding-ding went the bell
Ping-ping-ping went my heartstrings..."

As for the Hilary Duff line,   ! Throw in a few random "like, wow!" and you'll be castrated right then and there.

It's not illegal, although it should be. The U.S. military is way, way homophobic. They consider homosexuals a "security risk" because people could blackmail a homosexual by revealing their orientation to world. It's a pathetic 40's/50's view of the world. Also, the military authorities claim that homosexuals would hurt troop morale because, of course, all of the fags in the military would be sexually objectifying all those delicious, hard to resist, military heterosexuals....

Gawd, the military is SO f**ked up!! I'm really glad that they don't want me.

Can an only child, widowed, single parent, 26 year old female be drafted? :D

You would think we'd have made more progress in this day and age. The sad truth is, this is an area where our culture has actually regressed in the last 3,000 years.

By that I mean, if you asked any military historian to name the birthplace of military science as we know it, he or she will most likely tell you it was ancient Sparta. Many concepts still used today, such as boot camp, were first conceived by the Spartans, and their military might was legendary in the ancient world. Such macho he-men would never have allowed no nancy-boy queers in their army, right? Quite the opposite, in fact. Homosexuality among the Spartan was not only permitted, it was actually encouraged, almost mandatory in fact. Their rationale was that men who were lovers, who shared such an intimate a bond, would fight all the more fiercely for each other. And women in the city were also encouraged to take a female lover, at least until they were ready to marry and have children.

As for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," aside from the obvious fact that it's discrimination, the major problem with it is, how do you decide what constitutes being gay in the first place? Sexual orientation is far more fluid than most people believe. Are bisexuals disqualified as well? What about someone who experimented with the same sex once or twice years ago? Are people with a bisexual past ok, but people who are actively involved with the same sex disqualified? And if so, how long ago does the last same-sex encounter need to have been? Does one have to swear an oath that he or she will never engage in gay sex again?

And what about a situation like the cast of Pvt. Barry Winchell, who was murdered in his bed by a homophobic fellow soldier? The men in his barracks believed he was gay because he was dating a pre-op transsexual. But as far as Pvt. Winchell was concerned, the beautiful dancer who had captured his heart was a woman; she just happened to have male genitalia.

Of course, no matter how the military attempts to justify its position, I believe the real reason for its institutional homophobia has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with insecure straight men. Heaven forbid, if they let gay men in, then the straight soldiers might actually have to deal with someone bigger and stronger looking at them in a sexual manner. You know, the same thing women deal with every day. Could even be that the men who are most afraid some gay dude in the barracks will be unable to control his sexual urges are the same men responsible for such shining examples of soldierly behavior as the Tailhook convention in the early 90s and the more recent scandal at the Air Force Academy.

ya sound like me with the medical problems

In all honesty, "If" I were able to be drafted ("Medical disqualified" squashed that chance when I voluntarily tried to enlist years ago, And even if that never happened being a 34 yr.old has put me out of the military age requirement for a draft) I would not dodge it and serve in the USMC.
