What did you guys play when you were little?

There were a lot of kids on my street growing up. It was like something from the '50s suburbia (NO, I'm not that old) - the houses on the hill, the connecting streets, the cul-de-sac at the end with the park, the neighbors we all knew.

We played the following:
- running bases
- superheroes
- practicing plays such as Grease ( ) and an original ghost story
- with weeble wobbles, Colorforms, Micronauts, Sit & Spin, trading cards
- Pong, Atari, air hockey
- catch, blowing bubbles
- on swingsets
- hide and seek (Best in the dark in a basement, where the seeker gets to use a flashlight)
- drawing on sidewalks, & that thing that spun around as you dripped paints on it
- Mousetrap, & that plastic thing with the boxers punching each other
- kick the can, capture the flag, steal the bacon, baby in the air
- Trouble, Sorry, Operation
- Zim-Zam (Does ANYONE remember this? We had one in my backyard.)

I remember the hot days where our mothers would tell us we HAD to go outside to play because the weather was so nice, and we would get mad at our mothers.

Can you come play? I'll let you choose the game. :)

I just had a weird sort-of-Stevie-moment RIGHT after posting this thread.
One of the toys I played with, I couldn't remember the name. The thing where you use the oddly shaped plastic tools to move your writing utensils in patterns & make interesting designs.
I gave up thinking about it & for some reason clicked onto the lyrics & interp.s forum, where I NEVER EVER go. I saw several threads & clicked FIRST on the Stevie review from 1983.
The article begins:

"Stevie Nicks Twirling In Her Fantasy World
by Steve Pond

Question: Who has more scarves than Elvis Presley? Who giggles more than the girls at a sixth-grade slumber party? Who twirls around more than a boxful of gyroscopes? Who sells more records than Fleetwood Mac?"

This freaks me out! "Gyroscopes" was what I was just trying to think of! It's like something supernatural directed me to this very article at this moment! How weird is that!

Baseball (From the age of 6 to 17, A wrist injury ended my career or otherwise I would still be playing. My best friend Trina was the best pitcher on an opposing team, And I enjoyed creaming the s--t outta her 70-80 MPH pitches as a teen! When we grew to older teens we played...uh..."Doctor", We were inseparable, More like Brother & Sister than anything else.)

Army (The field near our home had an ol' Civil War battlefield look to it, With bunkers, hideaways & a large pond right in the middle.)

Fireworks Stand (Around this time of year my 2 older brothers & myself would take all the fireworks we had bought and set 'em up on the porchsteps and pretend we ran a fireworks stand, I still have vivid memories of this when I was between the ages 5-7)

Atari 2600 (I enjoyed buying all the new games and figuring out how to cheat at 'em...I had "Raiders of The Lost Ark" figured out in a days time, And at the time it was one of the hardest Atari games to decypher)

Music (The only time music will leave my life is when my life ends...)

Beating the living s--t outta the other kids in the neighborhood-Our fave pastime, If ya moved into our neighborhood ya got yer ass kicked, Especially if yer last name was Gann (We owned those b-tches)...It comes with the territory.

Going to the Silvermine arcade at Curt's Mall (We knew the owner and always got to play free arcade classics like Pac-Man, Pong, Star Wars, Tank Zone & the ever popular Kiss Pinball machine)

Monopoly-I am the undisputed world champ at Monoppoly...That is cheating at Monopoly, My Mother even lets people know how much I would cheat, hehehehe!!!!

Did you have a favorite Power Ranger? (Is there a difference besides the gender & unifiorm colors?)

The army thing sounds cool. The park at the cul-de-sac was nothing special, except there were hills for cool sledding on either side, & the older kids made up these stories about Indians killing people with a fallen tree and a boulder that are still there. I had cool nightmares about headhunters marching up the street to my bedroom.

Were you always a big kid, or did you also get beaten up?

Hee. My favorite was always the yellow ranger. No matter who it was - Trini, Aisha.. the other ones. I stopped watching in 3rd grade.

After I posted, I remembered I'd swing all recess after I realized that the Power Rangers were lame.

It's tough, comng of age. I remember how my world was rocked when in the first grade Mrs. Warner gave us a stern lecture that the Fonz was not cool. You don't recover easily from those hard life lessons. :distress:

Wow...you were in 3rd grade...damn i'm old.

We played a lot of jailbreak during the summertime, streethockey, capture the flag, hide and seek (sometimes we'd be asses and not look for the person  ) , we'd jump on the trampoline, play soccer, play with dolls, put on shows....ahhh...sometimes I'd like to go back to that...

We did that a few times, if somebody was the seeker in hide & seek or the kicker in kick the can. We'd all go into somebody's house and watch TV in the air conditioning.

the baby (My oldest brother Bill is 6 years older and Geary is 4 years older) so the only time when I got my ass kicked was by my brothers.

We used to play kickball too, I remember never beating Geary and I hated it, He enjoyed annoying the s--t outta me, But life has a payback...His daughter Kendra is basically my clone (She has my looks & personality, So much it is eerie...Poor girl!!!) and she is as hyper now as I was as a child.

Going to the midnight movie/drive-in was also cool. I remember seeing Star Wars the weekend it was released and only 5 people were at the cinema: MY brothers Bill & Geary, My brother Bill's girlfriend Carrie & her sister Tonya (Who I think is Christine McVie's long lost daughter, The resemblance is uncanny) & myself. We (Geary & myself) sat in the front row and chuncked popcorn at Darth Vader when he talked in the deep breath voice, Telling him to "Wake up".

Football was another fave-My Mother loved to play tackle the man and we would all play in the field across from our home (My Mother could also play baseball), But she would pin me down and tickle me til I p-ssed myself (Trust me, If anyone tries to tickle me now I "run like hell"!!!!)

Another childhood memory I have is when my Mother bought her 1976 Pontiac Trans-Am (I come from a long line of auto mechanics & race car drivers, My late Father was an auto mechanic & TV repairman, I inherited his technical ability)...She had it tuned up so it could exceed the 180MPH on the speedometer. It was clocked by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol at 186MPH...This one cocky patrolman had a 1979 Bandit Limited Edition Turbo TA he thought was hotsh-t, So he challenge my Mother to a dragrace on a highway while the other OHP troopers in his unit watched to make sure the race happened without accident and they thought he would win, So this dumbass wanted to make it a "pinkslip" race which my Mother accepted happily...My Mother smoke his happy ass so bad the other troopers were laughing at his humilated ass when the race was over. He is lucky we didnt bring out the 1969 SS Camaro we owned, It was faster than my Mom's TA!!!

My sister & I played Hide & Seek in the house. Before she became EVIL. (Ask Riss!)

I remember when I was little I used to be obsessed with... I wanna say Mighty Max? He was like Polly Pocket for boys. I remember having a little science lab one and I remember finding a huge mountain thing in my mom's closet.... that I was getting for Christmas.

I just thought Santa dropped it off early.

I didn't find out about Santa until... 3rd grade, maybe. I learned the hard way. I was telling people in the lunch line about the stuff I got and the 5th graders were like "You LOSERS. Santa isn't REEEEEAL." :( I should have picked up on it when I was throwing something in the trash can in the kitchen and I saw all of the cookies we had left out for Santa in there. -_- I figured he just knew where the trash can was.

My parents LOVED messing with us re: Santa. My dad would put fake deer hoove prints in the snow in the backyard and we fell for it every. time.

G-d we were lame.

I'm not touching this line. ;)

For some reason we almost never played football, though we played every other sport.
And we played Star Wars. I had a plastic light saber that would glow in the darkif you held it ahile to a light. Being too lazy and clever for my own good, I put the light saber under the bathroom lights, ontop of the mirrored medicine cabinet. When I remembered it was there, I found it had melted.

My Mother would buy the presents early and try to hide 'em from us 3 boy, So was she ever surprised one Christmas when we found the presents in her bedroom and opened 'em up to see what we were receiving....The only problem was that we rewrapped the presents in different paper!!! It's got a picture of the mountain playset I found in mom's closet. It opened up and there was a whole bunch of random stuff inside you could stick Max in. It owned.

EDIT: This is the science lab one I had:

No. All we have (Debbie & myself) is a 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE (The "War horse"/"Black Death"). Our Nissan has a fetish with large wildlife (Only when Deb drives) because it has splattered alot of animals (Including a deer which tore the sh-t outta the front fender weld)

My brother Geary owns a Shelby Avenger though (Even had the legendary Carroll Shelby sign the dash, That is one fast ass car).

I'm scared of hitting animals. I saw a lot of deer when I lived in Austin, and since these days when I go there I usually drive back late at night, it pays to be careful.
But it says something especially about the quality of life in Oklahoma that woodland creatures are seeking to hurl themselves into a moving vehicle.

Dude, honestly? I don't know. lol.

I guess it's one of those things you let your imagination go haywire with. All I really remember about it is me thinking it was the best. thing. ever.

Apparently, there was a cartoon that went along with the toys. Maybe the toys represented stuff he did on the show? I never watched it (I didn't even know there was show until now).

I still own 3 of the toys I had as an infant:

A pink stuffed elephant

A plastic Tweety Bird

And a Playmate (I think thats the name of the toymaker) Pull-string firetruck with 2 wooden figures (The ladder works, The hoses are still in tact & the bell rings when it is pulled by the string, Except for the paint fading it is in excellent condition for a wooden 34 year old toy)

I also managed to break open a Weeble Wobble, believe it or not. And I broke the bee off the See & Spell. I always wanted to see the insides. I had a white-haired action figure (forget the name) where you'd press a button in his back & you could see his blood pumping & his internal organs (his front chest & torso were clear). My mom went blonde when I was iiiin... second or third grade (sheesh, everything happens in 3rd grade for me). She started out with frosting, then she went full-on blonde. She said it was to hide the grey.

Last month, she went back to brown. It freaked me out at first because I was so used to her being blonde. I'm used to it now, though.

When I was really little I played with Fisher Price Little People....I called them "goors" basically I was trying to say girls...but couldn't...so yeah....I had a farm and a school house and a regular house with which to play...oh and a circus train (these FP toys were my sister's - who is ten years older than I, they no longer make those toys like they used to :( )

I also had a bunch of little records that came with books...I had all of my favorites memorized..and I'd recite them for my (probably very bored) parents and grandparents...

When I was a bit older we moved to a neighborhood with kids, we played:

Barbies (for hours at a time...)
School (we were SO lame)
trouble, sorry or monopoly
we'd roller skate (in the days before roller blades)
we'd ride bikes
make prank calls....(call ID has ruined what was my favorite slumber party antic!)

Some of our favorites that involved all the kids on our block were:

Flashlight Tag -- We'd have up to like 6 yards that would be the territory where you could hide, and have probably 15 kids playing

Tarzan and Jane -- my best friend and I always ended up being the monkey, whose name escapes me...was it Cheetah?

Kickball -- My dad would get in on this and kick the ball not only out of the yard but over the neighbor's house behind us.

Orphanage -- One lucky kid got to be Mr. Meanie, who ran the orphanage.

I had a Skip-It (at least that's what they're called now..not sure what they were called in the '70s). It had a thing that went around your ankle and a lemon on the end of it, you spun it around and jumped over it. Hard to explain, but I loved that thing. I'll still play with my daughter's current version which uses a wheel instead of a lemon.

We also had some kind of ride-on toy that you operated by spinning the big wheels with your hands, and you would go in circles. Again, not a great description....

So basically your first paragraph tells me that you tried to turn your house into Little House On The Prairie. Why am I not surprised. ;)
I can't remember if I listed bike riding, but we did that a lot. I never road after my early teen years (still haven't learned hand brakes), but I had a cool dirt bike called the Hornet 1 that was made to look like a yellow and black fake cheesey motorcycly, complete with a fake tank. My parents are finally hiring a crew to clean out the garage (nobody has been in there for YEARS), and I told my mom to throw out everything except that bike!

Yeah...Eileen and I were the youngest of the kids, so that's why we were always Cheetah. All we got to do was sit in the tree making monkey noises!

The orphanage thing is kind of weird. Not sure where we got that. But as it turns out my daughter spent her first 9 months in an orphanage, and I don't think I'll ever share this game with her. I want her to have a positive image of orphanages!

We rode bikes a LOT, too. Did you have one with a banana seat and those big, high handlebars?

I was a tomboy (still am) as a kid. Me and my cousin would play with baby frogs and catch crawdads at my grandmother's house. LOL

We played four square....remember that game? If not, you had four people, drew a tic-tac-toe on the ground and closed it up so you have four squares...dur. LOL Then, you got a kickball (another game we played, in school, anways) and hit it into the other person's square. If the ball went out of the square, you're out. Stupid game. LOL

In PE class, we played:

Red Rover (!!!)
Kickball
Softball (My fave game!! I hit a homer in 5th grade!! Shocked the boys who were screaming "Move in....easy out!!" LOL)
Soccer (HATE soccer!!)
Basketball
Tennis (HATE tennis!!)

For fun, some would play:
Butt's Up (LMAO!! Who in their right mind....)
Football
Volleyball

At home, I'd play:

Detective on my bike (Yeah, I was VERY imaginative as a kid. LOL Also, we just sold my favorite bike in our garage sale recently and a little part of me, died, I think. LOL)
Atari and later...Nintendo
Volleyball
Badmitton
School (with friends....why would I wanna be a teacher, I don't really like kids. LOL)
rollerskate (My fave thing to do as a kid!!)
I played so much music as a kid...records, tapes, the radio...whatever. I made tapes of myself singing and talking. I'm an only child, so...LOL

I think I remember the rules, but I'm kinda fuzzy....it was a stupid game that the boys would play where they'd get this tennis ball, they'd all line up and race to the wall, whoever was last, had to stand at the wall, while they took turns throwing the tennis ball at his butt. I think that's the gist.

Like I said, STUPID game.

I keep telling her no, I'm gonna sell it when she's gone....yep, we've fought about it. She raced some guy back in the day and got caught by a cop, (the other guy saw the cop and bailed) and my dad "took" the car away from her. I was an only child and there were mainly boys to play with in my neighborhood (thank god!!!). I didn't really like toys, I hated to be inside, and outside, my favorite toys were basically ball and jumprope. Mostly what me and my boy playmate did was run. we played baseball a lot, a lot of times with "stick and plum" yes, the fruit. We played hide and seek, cartoon tag, tunnel tag, regular tag, freeze tag, and probably some others that i'm forgetting. We played race, rugby. There were trees, so we were always trying to build some kind of fort, or just climbing them (we played "race-climb" a lot). We also like to play "start small fires while chewing tobacco in our tree fort" I have a small burn scar from that one. We also liked to walk to our school and play on the roof, there was a way to climb up. We also slept outside in the summer. We were basically wild jungle children. I hated playing inside, and when i had to, I usually read a book, or practiced writing or fixing my hair. (We didn't have a TV, usually). The thing I hated most is when I asked my friend to come out and play, and he'd say "no, I'm watching TV" or "no, I'm playing ATARI" he let me play once or twice, I LOOOOVED "Pitfall". But also we lived on a big hill (everything in my town is on a big hill) and I had to walk about a mile to the grocery store every day to get our groceries, usually a gallon of milk at least every other day, plus sundries, cause we didn't have a car, then back up the giant hill, from the time I was 7 'till 10. That sucked. Also, the few times when I invited one of my school girlfriends over to play (they were invariably skinny, smart sickly types) it was so boring and they asked "can we play dolls?" or something equally lame, and i would force them to play jumprope or foursquare and would beat them (at the game, not physically) so much that it wasn't that fun. When i went to their house, they wanted me to play dolls, but i didn't really know what to do with them and begged them to play outside with me.
The End.
Wait, omigod, I forgot about taking the bigwheel or the wagon down the hill!!!! sooooooo fun!!! I wish I had a bigwheel now....

This thread is fun!! Remember Ghost in the Graveyard!!?? We played it at my grandmother's house. It's basically hide and seek and you play it in the dark. Always scared the crap outta me too.

I also used to make forts in my room/living room with chairs and sheets. THAT was fun! My dad had an old tent that he put up in the backyard for me. It stunk, smelled old and musty, but I sprayed lots of Lysol in it. LOL I put up a cot in there and made it my lil home away from home. Ahhhh, good times. :)

I keep thinking of stuff...I used to play in my room for hours with my stuffed animals, lil figures, dolls, etc. making them talk to one another. I loved playing with Lego too, I went through a serious Lego phase, building houses and stuff. Also, I had Barbies, but never really played with them. LOL I had a few Cabbage Patch Kids...but I also played with Hot Wheels. LOL!!!!

The swingset I had was awesome!! My, my friends, cousins, etc. wore that thing OUT.

I had a friend who lived next door, and she was REALLY into books. I never really was, like her, anyways. She would read those horror books, Christopher Pike and Sweet Valley High books. *GAG* She would call me and go "OMG, Christy, let me read you the back of my new Sweet Valley High book!!" I was like, "Okay." Then, I put the phone down or held it out so I wouldn't have to listen to her. LMAO!!!!!! I didn't care. Her mom let her watch horror and Rated R movies, my mom didn't like when I'd watch that at her house.

No, that's not what I mea. What we called bombardment was like what people today call dodgeball (if you get rid of the pins part). The teams are separated by a line. As I said, what we called dodgeball was played in a circle - NO escape.

- Jake
Yeah, ok, we had the same things, called the same things. Dodgeball=circle
Bombardment=line. BTW, after I wrote that thing about insurance and rockhopping, I checked my email, and look what my mom just wrote to me:

"I'm glad you take care to be safe in/around the water. When you were jumping rocks you practically gave me a heart attack at rock creek, and both me and your dad were very nervous when we took you to the "foresthill" swimming hole. :). "
How apropos!! :D hehehehehe

But for you, was dodgeball played in a circle like I described, or on different sides of a line, as seems to be the current way?

- Jake

We played dodgeball just like you described, in a circle. That was fun, taking out the people you didn't like!

We also did a LOT of skating in the late '70s/early '80s. I'd go every single Friday night in junior high to the Star Skating Center in Harrisburg. Every time I hear Blondie's "Call Me" and certain other disco songs that's what I think of. One thing I could never do was "shoot the duck," though.....

Dodgeball was played with one team on one side of the gym, the other, on the other side. No circles or anything like that.

No, neither one of us is adopted. I would just tell him that because neither one of us wanted to believe we were related to those wack jobs.

We played a lot of Cops and Robbers, and we used to build a lot of forts in the woods. More than that, we played with a lot of Star Trek toys. Yeah, we were geeks  I did play T-Ball for two years. Ahh, fond memories of the 94/95' undefeated T-Ball Yankees...

I am an only child, so I entertained myself most of the time. I rode my bike a lot and enjoyed my time in the sandbox. :) With the neighbor kids, we'd play police, kickball, I don't remember what all else.

At school, I played jump-rope (then Chinese jump-rope) a lot. We'd also make up dances. I can still do the one to "I Think We're Alone Now."

As I said, to me, that's bombardment minus the pins. You don't know from dodgeball until you've been inside that circle.

We didn't live near woods, but one day a few of us decided to run away to live under a tree in the back driveway on the other side of the street. It was not Eden, it turns out.

I used to play with barbies a lot with my sisters...man those were good times, I'd also play power rangers with the neighbors lol, the jungle gym at school, and role playing with my sisters, we'd play like cahracters in our fave tv shows then mix them together to make a story line...good fun....

It's a thin, elliptical-shaped rope. Two people stand facing each other a few feet apart with the rope around their ankles or legs. Then everyone else jumps in, out, and over the rope. There's lots of variations on the tricks you can do.

Jump "in it, out it, side it, side it, on it, in it, out it"!! hehehe....Then do it clapping, with your eyes closed, etc. After you pass each round without messing up, you raise the rope to mid-calf....Then after you pass each round at mid-calf, you raise it to knee height. I loved Chinese jump rope!

yep, you get blindfolded and you must catch the other kids while they're running near you. If you catch one, the one that gets caught is the blind rooster this time.

Well Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog were the main video games.
Outside mostly frisbee, dodgeball, tetherball, grab ball (velcro mits), skateboarding, army/spy, and Pickle (not sure how it explain, like running bases kinda)
Boardgames:
Monopoly, Sorry, Clue, Labrynith, Enchanted Forrest, Stretego, Cards, Battleship.

And of course the usual TV, Music (LOTS of MTV and VH1), and other typical stuff, Computers had just come out so Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego were about it...

My brother did the skateboard thing, but I never got into it.
And what were your dodgeball rules? ;)

Jake-

I think the doge ball rules were of the typical type: circle with a ring of ppl outside and then ppl inside, the ppl outside had rubber balls that they tried to hit the ppl inside with, they had to hit them below the waist, then they switched in and the other person switched out. There was also the version where you throw the ball against a wall and then had to avoid getting hit as it bounce off, don't remember this being called dodge ball though.

Oh about the skateboarding, my version was usually to sit on one and ride it down a hill, not very intelligent, but I remember clibing on the roof and jumping off as well...

Also can't believe I forgot 2 square and 4 square...

Good, you played dodgeball the right way, in a circle.

I've never played the square thing.

I HATE Dodgeball....mostly because there's this little known law of physics...it states that if there is something flying through the air near Deanna G. it WILL hit her in the head or face....

I hated dodgeball, mostly because I was so bad at it...and I've had a fear of games with balls since I was 6 and my two front teeth got knocked out in tee-ball  and this chick threw a ball at me without, ya know, telling me...and I got it right in the mouth....lots of blood....it was gross...

Anyway, I forgot...when I was in elementary school Chinese Jumprope became a big rage....it was fun....we all had a Chinese Jumprope...:D
