...I mean, it's just eerie sometimes! I was shocked to learn that Stevie is not singing on The Ledge! (In all honesty, I was a little disappointed too, because I had always pictured them having fun singing the silly vocals together:(.) There's a litle "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh" in the background in the middle of the song that sounds just like her, and the very last "what it's really all about" sounds just like them singing together. I was listening to Trouble this morning, and the background vocals sound just like Lindsey and Christine together! I know there are lots of other moments I've noticed, especially where he sounds like Stevie, but I just can't think of them right now.

Perhaps ironically, Stevie sang that "yeah" on the tours without Lindsey, which I'm sure didn't help you figure it out.;)

I've always thought it was really weird how similar Carol Ann's voice sounds to Stevie's on "It Was I."
I mean, it's one thing to date ladies that looked similar to her, but to date ones that sounded similar to her, too?
Dude, there's a fine line between having a "type," and being fixated on an ex-girlfriend! ;)
Well, someone has a fixation anyway. ;) I always thought he blended Carol’s voice to sound like his own, which can sound like Stevie's and can sound like Christine's somehow. Much as Lindsey and Stevie can have very similar sounding harmonies, I think he can also sound uncannily like Christine on certain songs, which is odd since I don’t think there's a lot of similarity between Stevie's and Christine's voices.

I'm with you here Les, in fact I've read a couple of reviews of Rumours in which the writers find it odd that Chris gave Lindsey "Don't Stop" to sing in its entirety. ;)

I think it has to do with the fact that Lindsey will sometimes sing in breathy tones, reminiscent of Christine's singing style, and sometimes in reedier tones that sound closer to Stevie's.
So depending on which way he's singing, when he uses the VSO to alter his pitch, it'll either sound strikingly similar to Christine or to Stevie.
There are quite a few moments on 'Tango,' especially, where it can be hard to distinguish between his voice and Christine's.

But it's not uncommon for co-band members to sound alike. Lennon and McCartney were sounding similar in some recordings.
Very true. I am a BIG Beatles fan, and there are passages in a couple of the earlier songs where I'm still not sure which it is! I'll think I've finally figured it out, and then the doubt creeps right back in.;)
Besides alteration techniques which is usually responsible, one does begin to sing more like their singing partner over time. Much of the Beatles song Real Love was Paul just trying to sing like John anyway.
 I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this, but I think I disagree:). Maybe you didn't mean it to sound so negative, but for technical reasons Paul had to sing in a way that would simply fill out the thinness of John's voice on the demo-quality tape. Therefore it would make sense for him to match John's style and tone the best he could so it didn't sound like his own voice was overpowering John's (who is presented as the lead singer of the song).

Thats funny. Like a lot of people I thought Stevie was probably on Big Love, but it turnes out it was all Lindsey with the tape sped up a bit. I never thought she was on The Ledge though, probably because by the time I heard it I had read that it was just Lindsey singing in the bathroom or something! (That was how The Ledge was recorded right? Or am I thinking of another song??)

I always wondered about that myself! I did find it strange, that somewhat similar voice! Later I started thinking about Carol Ann and Stevie, comparing them. They do look kinda similar, and both seem to have a kind of similar sexy singing voice...
Maybe there was some sub-conscious fixation thing going on with Lindsey... :p

Is anyone saying that he wanted Stevie to appear on his songs? Isn't the reason he's faking her voice because he doesn't want to ask her to do it herself? He may not want HER, but he wants her sound.... that's all anyone seems to be saying.

But I don't hear her in any of that. If there's a will to emulate female vocals it's not necessarily a will to emulate Stevie Nicks.

He was faking her voice? Given that Lindsey's and Stevie's voices and Lindsey's and Christine's voices can sound very similar just in their regular styles, when he's recording several voices to make his own harmonies on his own songs, doesn't it sort of stand to reason that some of the voices are going to sound like Stevie and Christine?

"Faking" was a poor choice of words- sound perjorative. Perhaps it would be better to say "recreating." But when I hear demos like "She Smiled Sweetly" I have to say the similarity is so eerie that it's hard to believe it's coincidental. And there's nothing wrong with recreating a certain "timbre" that works. Not trying to diss Lindsey here.

Oh, I guess that was me getting my head in my ass again.
You know there's all kinds of speculation to be had on this:
"Lindsey wanted Stevie so badly even in the middle of his 'hate towards SN' period that he still ended up recreating her voice consciously/subconsciously to certain spots of his solo work. This proves that he's been unavailable of dealing with the breakup."
So as you can see, CarneVaca was right. The romantics are not the worst enemies of those who think Lindsey has never needed Stevie. I am. I am the über-shipper! ;)

I don't think it is coincidence either, I think it's to do with how he constructs harmonies and the similar nature of their voices. I guess I just don't think he was trying to recreate a sound that was a natural part of his sound. His voice naturally seemed to have elements similar to Stevie's and Christine's voices, so it seemed inevitable that when constructing multi-layered harmonies with his own voice, it was going to sound like two or all three of them. And that was probably going to happen with him moreso than with Stevie or Christine because Stevie and Christine used other singers in their harmonies on their solo stuff, whereas Lindsey was, save for the rare occasion, working mostly with just his voice.

He may not want HER, but he wants her sound. In my opinion, the only aspect of Stevie's craft that ever impressed Lindsey (or Christine, for that matter) was her singing. I don't think Lindsey ever thought all that much of her songwriting or her instrumental abilities. He certainly didn't have the admiration for her lyrics in general that, say, John Stewart had. Back in the old days, Stewart considered Stevie one of the pre-eminent songwriters in rock.
Lindsey's & Christine's views on Stevie seem similar to my own: she's a brilliant, gifted vocalist, but, aside from a handful of interesting songs, a strangely inchoate lyricist & a completely unremarkable pianist & guitarist.
I was watching Stevie's Storytellers the other night, & that one segment just kills me: She's sitting there playing something -- Rhiannon, I think -- on a Yamaha MIDI Grand, plonking away like a 6-year-old practicing single-octave scales. I don't know whether to laugh or to cry; this beautiful instrument -- the Rolls-Royce of all midi grand pianos & renowned around the world for its dazzling technology, elegance & extremely high price -- is being banged on as if it were a plastic Magnus toy organ.

Everyone knows Stevie is not the best pianist and guitarist, but I must admit I'm astonished that you not only characterize her lyrics as "strangely inchoate" but project that view onto Lindsey and Christine as well. I suppose everyone is entitled to his/her opinion regarding Stevie's lyrics - they certainly can be abstract and non-traditional; perhaps some may find them on occasion hard to follow. However, be careful about putting words into the mouths of others. Lindsey has raved about Stevie's lyrical abilities. I can't presume to know Christine's mind on the subject, but Lindsey has stated that from the beginning he was "knocked out" by Stevie's songs and as recently as 2002, he was in tears after listening to Illume. So I think it is safe to say he would NOT agree with such a disparaging assessment of her talents.

As for Christine's views on Stevie's lyrics, she has said in the past that she thinks Stevie is a poet (I can dig up the quote for you if you need evidence). So that's a pretty good indication that she admires her lyrics at least.
She's also said that she had no idea what Stevie was talking about most of the time.
I think "inchoate" is an apt description for some of Stevie's songs, including "Illume." I've harped on the lack of self-editing before, and perhaps this is what David means.
I believe, however, that Lindsey appreciates Stevie's songwriting, probably more so now than ever. In a way, it is somewhat baffling to me because I don't think her writing is as good, or at least as interesting, as when she wrote Landslide, Rhiannon, Dreams, Gold Dust Woman, Sara, Storms, and even things like The Wild Heart and Edge of 17.

Just so you know, I do not assume anything like that. I'm not even that interested in what Lindsey thinks about it. But I've never needed to question his emotional involvement into Stevie's music either.

That's a nice post you linked to but I was responding to the statement David made in THIS thread. And I think it's quite obvious that he was not waxing poetic about Stevie the lyricist in that. So no, I don't believe I misunderstood him either. I don't believe David hates Stevie or something ridiculous like that, but I do believe that in the above post he undervalues Stevie, moreso than Lindsey would. For instance, I would imagine Lindsey finds more than a handful of Stevie's songs interesting. And while in the post you linked to David seems to find Stevie's style fascinating, there is no mistaking that in the above post, he does not cast it that way: "she's a brilliant, gifted vocalist, but, aside from a handful of interesting songs, a strangely inchoate lyricist & a completely unremarkable pianist & guitarist." [empasis mine] Obviously in this case the "incohate lyricist" comment, paired with her not-so-steller performances on piano and guitar, and contrasted with her brilliant vocals, makes the meaning quite clearly derogatory.
If I have misunderstood, however, I await clarification. ;)

I'm not going to speak for David at all here but I do believe that Lindsey, while obviously being very involved and emotionally connected to Stevie's work, still occasionally finds it important to tell her of some of her ideas being technically less stellar than is the usual. It's a musician (with no theoretical training, but with a producer's understanding of it and the grasp of the jargon) speaking to someone who's less talented in this regard and trying to make her work somewhat more understandable to him. Speaking of the notorious (around here, anyway) lyrics change in "Thrown Down" in the DR doc, I think that's pretty representative of a situation like that.
But I guess he's still learning the valuability of some of those precious Nicksian quirks. In any case, loving something doesn't necessarily mean that you lose your critical eye automatically.

I don't think it's really warranted for anyone to call Stevie's lyrics "incoherant". A bit harsh if you ask me. They just don't make sense to you. Stevie is the epitome of an "you either 'get it' or you don't" artist, and I've "gotten it" from Day One in a big way. And then there are the few "gray area" songs such as Landslide that even those who don't "get it" in general can relate to.
