When you eat out, do you stick with the same familiar items on the menu, or do you tend to try new selections more frequently?

That would be a big fat hell no. I am so not adventerous in my eating habits.
I can honestly say I've never had anything on the Applebees menu but a cheesebuger.
If I like something at a restaurant I usually stick with it...
I'm a total burger and pizza type gal....and lately, in fact, I've been getting a lot of flack from my co-workers because of my limited and narrow knowledge of food....

If I find something I really really like, I'll usually order it again. But I do like to try new things once in a while.

Weeell. When you eat a hamburger, you're eating the muscle. Same goes for ham or any other type of meat - it's all muscle.
But stickin' to the topic, I usually just have the same thing. Sometimes I'll get something different, but I know what I like. :)

I like to eat different kinds of food, and we are blessed where i live to have whatever kind you ever thought you wanted, but...I try to go to the specific type of restaurant for that kind of food - like i'm not gonna order sushi from a place that also sells hamburgers, know what i mean? And I don't want to eat Thai food dishes from Riley's Beer and Pub, know what i'm saying? And nooo Ceasar's salad from Korean BBQ place. That said, I really could eat mexican food almost all the time, and it's cheap, so while i want to be more adventurous, it's not usually in the ol' budget.

NEWP. I don't eat anything that looks gross. LOL I am one of the pickiest eaters EVER. I take after my dad, although he does eat stuff I won't...i.e. bologna. *Barf*
I won't eat cold meat either. I just don't like it, it's disgusting. Cold meat sandwiches, NO WAY. :distress: I need hot food. LOL
I don't eat steak either. I need bread with my meat. I mostly love chicken, fish and hamburgers. French fries are my weakness and will probably put me in the grave, early.
My won't eat list is ALOT longer than my will eat list.

I am pretty adventurous. I will try almost any kinda of food once. But when it comes to drinks I am as finicky as a Cat. I hate sprit, 7 up Dr Pepper and tea. I use to hate eating at a friends house when I was young. It was always a big deal that I don't drink tea. I would tell them milk or water is fine and they would be like "how can you not like tea"

I don't drink tea anymore. I grew up with sweet tea...it's a staple in the South. I stopped drinking it a long time ago, and went to water. I don't like 7-Up, Sprite or DP either. Bleck. I like Coke, Pepsi and Big Red. RC is okay, but it's too sweet.
When I was little, and I'd eat at a friends' house, they'd always want me to drink milk and I don't care for it. When we'd eat, it was ALWAYS sweet tea.

not like i could qualify for Fear Factor or anything, but still i'm pretty adventurous, when i go to the supermarket for example, i always snoop for new and exotic groceries to try, i'm willing to try just about everything (other than from the meat dept. or anything which has to do with cinnamon). the only thing i have to consume regularly is white chocolate.
but then again, i think anyone who grew up eating my mom's cooking could not have developed into a picky eater.

I do not have an adventurous bone in my body. Nope. I find that when I try something new, I end up spending a lot for it, it's horrible, and I don't eat it and am still hungry. That? Stinks. I eat a lot salads and i'm a fan of chicken and chicken fingers. I think everytime I go out somewhere, there's chicken involved in whatever meal i'm getting. The only adventurous thing I may do when it comes to food is switch salad dressing

I would say I am adventurous and I certainly do like to try new foods. Even if they're gross at least you can say you tried them.
Unless it's meat of course. Eating meat is plain wrong in my view, there's no acceptable justification for it at all.
I'm not having a go at anyone here or anything, that's just my personal view. I'm with Morrissey on that particular issue.
But anyway, yes, it's good to try new things and if there's something different on the menu, I'm always game (so to speak hehe) :)
Other than meats, I think some of the grossest foods are desserts, believe it or not. Tapioca, tiramisu (yes, I actually hate it), and sponge cake come to mind.

What's with the blood question, may I ask?
And this thread keeps bringing back SNL memories. The USA for Africa spoof where they record a song to help support the free range chicken cause. In the middle of the song "Diana Ross" comes on with a speaking voice (like in her "Missing You" song) and says "Tell the world...to tell the children...to tell the chickens...we're on our way!" ah hahahaha! No i don't remember the McSushi fake commercial, suprisingly. I keep asking people who don't eat red meat about their bloodtype, because i just read "eat right for your blood type" which is waaaay not as stupid as it sounds and has a bunch of science in it. Anyway, Type o is the oldest blood type, and so theoretically are supposed to eat (for maximum benifit) almost no grains (only certain type, only 2 days a week, or something) and they're supposed to eat veeerrry lean red meat (buffalo, etc.) not the kind at regular stores with hormones and high fat and blah, several times a week, and lots o' veggies. Oh, and absolutely no wheat. Anyway, i could tell you more, but that would be boring, for sure for you, and somewhat for me. I'm not saying this book is the new Bible or anything, but it has interesting points, and that is why I keep asking. The End.

One of the first rules of satisfying dining is to eat what the restaurant specializes in (or prepares the most). It's entertaining just how unbelievably stupid people are: they'll order a steak at Hank's House of Cheese, or a Chinese chicken salad from a taco joint, & then wonder why they feel sick.
I am a very adventurous eater, within bounds of reason (I'm not talking about Fear Factor cuisine here). I love a huge variety of ethnic foods, including Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, Italian, French, German, Swiss, Spanish, Russian, Slavic, East Indian -- I could literally rattle off countries & cuisines from around the world & say I've tried them & like them. My parents made sure I was eating a pretty wide variety of food when I was a youth, including sushi (this was long before the sushi fad developed in California) & seafood. Our favorite restaurants were a Japanese place, a Bavarian place, a Greek place & an Italian place; as a treat, like a birthday, they took me to a classic French restaurant in an L.A. suburb called La Parisienne. I had escargots before I hit sixth grade.
Generally, a couple of things I wouldn't try: primate, reptile & some mammals (dogs, cats, horses).

I'm curious as to what average eating is though. I think the standards are different between Australia and the US atleast. And what are burgers and chips (fries) doing on menus (at places other than McDonalds and the likes)? Maybe my parents are just snobs (what's this regular lettuce? it has to be rocket!), but then my American boyfriend has said that you just don't get the variety in everyday cafes and markets that you do here. He also said that where families might pick up a last minute sloppy take-aways here (on the occasion that they're dying and can't possibly cook something better) is where many families would go out for dinner over there. I could only ever find pizza places and the likes in the US. Someone must have been hiding all the focaccias.
Aiieee! I sound like a complete snob. I swear I meant it just as a question/observation about our societies. Atleast you don't have British food, which would actually make airline food seem appealing.
I don't find your post insulting at all. My experience has been that there's quite a bit of variety and quality in American restaurants, but I've lived mostly in large cities & I avoid fast food.

Well I've had alligator when I was in florida so I guess that's adventurous, oh and it tastes like chicken.
On another note I will not try sushi or escargoes (snails) EVER, I think a bit too much microbiology for me to eat raw fish or any raw meat.
I do love calamari, and I have tried raw mussles and clams (I was five and my dad said they tasted good, never again).
Basically if it isn't raw, spicey or something really weird (monkey brains etc.) I'll taste it (I may spit it out however...)

It's an Italian tradition that I hate (and not just because I don't like my fathers side of the family although I can tell you, that makes being there even worse). They do this whole seven fish thing which also includes squid and crazy food that I don't ever touch. I leave there smelling like fried food. It's just gross. Normally I eat before I go there because my grandmothers cooking...eh...sorry grandmom but your son cooks better than you. My mom usually brings a big fruit platter so I sit there and eat that and my dad usually makes up some shrimp and cocktail sauce so i'll eat a few of those.
Christmas day is just the three of us and my nana so it's normal...ham and all the trimmings. That I don't mind very much because we don't often eat it and after the meal at gradmoms the night before, i'd eat anything.

Since when did shoes have tenecals:) Actually I will admit if it's not done right or if its not the deep fried type it can be a bit bland and just chewy...but if done right its really good and should be a bit more crispy and a bit less rubbery.

It seriously is. Another Christmas Eve story...
When I was incredibly young...probably 7 or 8...my cousin Michelle and I were walking around in the kitchen when we noticed the pot on the stove starting to boil over. So we're standing there and the lid starts to pop off and tenecals start hanging out of the pot. Let's just say that was the my first and last experience with squid.

See I got told after I ate the non-tenecal part what it was, of course being about six I basically ate whatever my dad said was good, and in this case I liked it, after finding out it was squid I was grossed out for a minute but then decided it was okay. I do love ordering it when my uncle is around as he finds it a disgusting food, and this way I can kinda joke with him over how chewy the tenecals are...

I'm Italian, and we often had lasagna at Xmas. Or ham. Or Turkey.otherwise it was just the usual stuffing, gravy, salad, broccoli, cranberry, olives, more gravy, mashed potatoes, fighting over gravy, grandma waiting for everyone to praise fabulous meal. You know, the usual.
Also - Type A blood is supposed to have come about at the time people "evolved" into agrarian societies, most Europeans, northern Europeans are "A". (Irish, English, French, blah, blah). "A"'s are supposed to do very well with grains, and beans? and are not supposed to have red meat hardly ever, and are supposed to eat chicken or some other white meat 3-4 times a week or something. It's like the opposite of "O". They make good vegetarians. (this is in theory, of course - what the book says, not the law.)

Having had squid when I was younger (My friend at the time tried to gross me out and not let me know what it was until I took a bite, But alas it backfired) and having ate "Rocky Mountain Oysters" (aka Calf Fries in this area) I'm not that adventurous when it comes to food.
But I will state I won't EVER eat Macaroni & Cheese...Yuck!!!

It really depends on the restaurant. But I usually try new food.
Ditto here. I've eaten (and will eat again) sushi, escargot, mussels, calamari, clams (steamed preferably), buffalo, shark - that's all I can think of right now. I've also tried ostrich & rattlesnake, but wouldn't bother with them again. If there's something new & different on a menu, I usually go for it (and I'm usually the only one at the table that will!)

Blechh. I'd rathewr have fish than ham. :(

"And I despise calamari. It's like the sole of a running shoe."
Since when did shoes have tenecals:) Actually I will admit if it's not done right or if its not the deep fried type it can be a bit bland and just chewy...but if done right its really good and should be a bit more crispy and a bit less rubbery.
Food should not have suction cups. Period. :wavey:

It seriously is. Another Christmas Eve story...
When I was incredibly young...probably 7 or 8...my cousin Michelle and I were walking around in the kitchen when we noticed the pot on the stove starting to boil over. So we're standing there and the lid starts to pop off and tenecals start hanging out of the pot. Let's just say that was the my first and last experience with squid.
Like the scene in Better Off Dead where the mom is trying to contain the thing in the pot.

Your uncle sounds like a very wise man. :wavey:

Thanks. That sounds like the diet I aspire to. What does it say about chocolate intake? ;)
Not sure what Northern Europe has to do with my family tree, though strangers always tell me I look Irish. Who knows.

You don't know your ethnic makeup? Are you adopted? About chocolate, I don't remember, but I think it generally says people shouldn't really eat sweets, refined sugar. In fact, I'm pretty sure it says that, although I imagine "A's" would be the best at it, since grains etc, basically turn into sugar anyway. But i kind of just made that up. I know that for me, sugar makes me tired, sometimes almost immediately. Like - Snickers = Nap five minutes later...kinda sucks. Luckily I like to nap!

I'm not adopted. (The insanity proves it.) Think Fiddler On The Roof, but if we search back before Eastern Europe, who knows. Most Jews who lived there didn't arrive until the expulsions of the late Middle Ages, and the fact that my eyes are blue and my hair was blond when I was little suggests that there was "mixing" somewhere. With Khazaria and all the intermarriage and conversions and name changes over the years, I doubt my Jewish roots go back to biblical times. So who knows, there might be some Celtic blood in me, which helps explain my interest in the history. :)

Jake, even you wouldn't touch this fish. I'm telling you...it's gross. I'm a picky eater and if you're as picky as I think you are, you wouldn't eat this. It looks as smells disgusting. Last year I tried the fried flounder. Blech. Not a good time.

I'm not the biggest fan of red meat nor do I really like pork (pork chops = gross). However, for some reason, the occasional piece of ham doesn't bother me. Go figure

I'm not the biggest fish person. My family is big on going out fishing and catching stuff then coming back, cleaning it and cooking it up. Last year my uncle and his charters caught a swordfish (which is unheard of in those parts and is evidently some of the best fish) and the charter gave him a few filets. It was the most tasteless grossest thing i've ever eaten. Flounder I like if it's cooked well. Salmon I suppose is an accquired taste. I've had a few different types of shark and it's decent but I don't think I could eat it all the time.

Swordfish is fine. Not the strongest flavor (like mai mahi). Flounder is okay, but not a favorite. I eat a lot of salmot, which I've always liked. I'm trying to think of the name of the other fish I'll get (almondine) - I can't remember, and it's a common one.
