I like the song. Sure, it's no Rhiannon, Storms or Landslide, but it's okay. I like singing it. :)

The thing that saves it (for me at least) is those incredible vocal games between the three singers. I do listen to it just because of that.

I love this song! I started a thread last year asking the same question and a bunch of people seemed to like the song. I also asked if anyone liked Paper Doll and a bunch of people said yes even though no one ever talks about that song!

I really like this song, and love singing along too. I think the lyrics are great- about Stevie's rehab at Betty Ford. I especially love "This is a dream- right? Deja Vu..." and the lyrics from Blue Lamp. Like wondergirl said, its no Rhiannon, but as far as songs go, I think its great.

I like it a lot, especially the Blue Lamp lyrics thrown in and the way her voice sounds in the Deja-vu and Aw-aw lines.

After reading posts for a year now Ive come to the conclusion that alot of people dont like welcome to the room sara.I have always really liked this song and am curious why the dislike.Reading through the positives in this thread, I see that everyone likes the words because of the personal nature of that experience for Stevie.

I don't really love the song because I think the arrangement & instrumentation are essentially hookless & the lead vocal is screechy. I also think a lot of those words are really dumb.

I don't like it because it's just a jumbled mess and none of it works or stands out. There is no hook whatsoever and the music is quite cheesy and half-baked. If this was written when she was in Betty Ford, you can certainly tell, the lyrics are a mess. Very sloppy and ill-conceived. Play it for a casual fan and you'll get a look of sheer confusion. The cryptic references to her management is what really puts me over the edge of despising this song. And the stolen lyrics from Blue Lamp.

Please not this again!
The last thread on this song went on for, like, 40 pages!
Johnny Stew will explain just why he thinks the song is greatness.
Then CarneVaca and Gaius will say how useless Stevie was in the mid 80s.
Then a debate will start up on who is better, Stevie or Lindsey and 40 pages later nothing will be resolved!
Let’s just say a lot of people don’t like this song, but there are plenty of people who do.
Different strokes for different folks and all that.
Okay?

Short answer: THE SONG SUCKS!

Personally, I like the lyrics to this song. It really tells the story about where she was at that point in her life. I don't like the music and the tempo of the song. The song has this really draggy tempo. I think that just pulls the song down. It is like the lyrics are trying to move forward, but the tempo keeps pulling them back. The music, tempo, and lyrics don't even match up in my opinion. The song would be much better, if it had different music with a different beat/tempo. Of course, to each his own.

Tango in the Night is such a mixed album. I love Big Love. I love Seven Wonders. I love the title song. I love Little Lies. I love Isn't It Midnight . I like You and I Part II ,I even love When I See You Again.

But then I HATE Family Man, I HATE Caroline, I HATE Mystified and I HATE WTTRS. It's like these songs were just thrown together half-assed and put on the album because they had nothing else. I know the whole story and it's no wonder these songs got on but I just never had an album where some songs are my absolute FAV and some I hate the most. Oh well.

WTTRS would be better if something was different, like some organization of the music, lyrics and everything else that's going on. It just doesn't sound right at all. It's a mess.

I know I forgot Everywhere but I don't have any opinion of that song.

I love TITN.....McBuck at their finest.

I don't like WTTR...S and WISYA because of Stevie's vocals. I love her, I really do, but during that period her voice was shot. I don't like the lyrics all that much to WTTR...S but a better vocal would have made it more tolerable. I think her vocal on Seven Wonders is atrocious as well, but the song is so damn catchy. I love it, even though I shouldn't.

Yeah, to even put them in the same category is silly. WWTR Sara comes across as if pretty much everyone had given up. Stevie had given up trying to write and sing, Lindsey had given up trying to turn **** into gold.

I think there is more structure in a pile of dog**** than "Welcome To The Room... Sara" IMHO.

Having said that, I think "Family Man" is one of Lindsey's weaker numbers too (athough the guitar and song structure is fine).

Tango is essentially, for me, Christine's album although the original "Big Love" is my favorite track.

i couldn't disagree more.

1. it's not a "jumbled mess", it's just the 'untamed' nicks. unlike silver girl, or say you will, this is one of her more raw stuff.

2. yes, it doesn't have a hook, heck, it doesn't have a chorus even! but actually, it's quite bold if you ask me, and besides, this song connects with Sara, which doesn't have a chorus either despite being 20 minutes long.

3. you sound to me like those old purists who go "oh... those 'modern artists' they can't even sketch properly, that's why they create such abstract paintings", that's funny, ms. nicks is a skillful, professional and award-winning songwriter, it's not like she "forgets" a chorus or a hook, there are times (such as wttr...s) when her writing's SO brilliant, that she doesn't even NEED those. she's in fact singing a poem and not a song, which i think is truly admirable.

4. in fact, i did use this song a coupla times as an example for people who claimed FM or SN's music to be shallow or too commercial, and usually it worked.

:)

Crap, I'm getting too predictable! :o

Anyway, of Stevie's three 'Tango' songs, I'd say that "Welcome To The Room... Sara," is my least favorite. Though I certainly don't hate it by any means.

Yes, it's unstructured and offbeat... but then, I thought that "different" was supposed to be a good thing?
And hey, at least it's not "just another love song" thematically. :)

I think it's moving when taken in context, but I can see why it would be off-putting to the casual listener.
But when I first heard it (as a very new fan), I was totally intrigued because I had no idea what she was singing about... so that lent a mystery to the song, which had great appeal for me. I actually usually prefer when a song's meaning is rather enigmatic, rather than be hit over the head with it... and that's yet another reason Stevie's songs have always had so much appeal to me.
Even the more straight-forward songs have their element of mystery.

I think "WTTR...S" is one of those "love it or hate it" kind of songs, and it just all has to do with what appeals to you, or what you look for in a song. :)

Tastes are tastes. But to call this song brilliant is a stretch. A big stretch. It has nothing to do with the structure or whatever. The song SUCKS. There's nothing redeeming about it. It's that simple.

Well I'm one of those who just doesn't care for it, in fact Tango is my LEAST fave of the Rumors line-up, half I like, half I just don't care, and half I really dislike. As for why, WTTRS is just so very depressing, the vocal and music don't really mesh, and she rambles off in the end. I do like some of the lyrics, but overall they are just a bit off, plus I don't care for the use of Tara. But then again I really don't care for much of Stevies work from 87-95 with a few exceptions, overall it just seems like Stevie lost part of what made me love her, she just has very little enthusiasm, or even focus, and seems really depressed, and yes I do know about the klopin stuff...

Yeah, that's nothing to write home about. But the other ones are great. :D I think it sucks that there isn't a remix for Isn't It Midnight, that would've ROCKED.

I've always wondered if there really is a longer version of the mix on 'The Chain' boxed-set, which is listed as an "edited alternate mix."
You'd think that it would have surfaced by now, if it existed.

That song was the perfect candidate for a great, lengthy tour de force club remix.

Have you ever heard the demo for it? I donwloaded a few months ago and I kinda dug it.

Hmm... I probably have, but I can't remember exactly.
I need to check.

It's funny because, as much as I love 'Tango,' some of Christine & Lindsey's songs in their "work-in-progress" state were pretty lame.

To the WTTRS topic: of course the song is not one of the outstanding good ones from TITN. But: in comparison to something like Silver girl it is not that bad. In fact I like it not because of the songwriting but because of the Lindsey singing part and exactly for that reason I like the ending of WISYA.

Caroline is a great song, his voice sounds cool and it was one of the reasons I got a fan back then. And the vocals- well english is not my first language so that is not my main interest in the beginning. The music is my main interest. Otherwise I wouldn`t listen to some of Stevies stuff I guess.

Family man has this silly cheap sounding synth on it. Unfortunately he re-cycled that on Soul drifter which makes this good song sound a little cheap... It would be interesting to get to know what those two would sound like nowadays!

Okay?
:)

LOL! Ain't that the truth!!!

Yeah, gotta agree here. They BOTH suck!

And I also LOVE Caroline the other Lindsey song bashed from this album.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear that song dissed. We all have our tastes, of course, but IMHO that's my fourth favorite.
My breakdown of Tango, for the small number of people who might care what I think:
Favorite: Little Lies
Pretty good - Big Love, Seven Wonders, Caroline, TITN, Everywhere
Tolerable - Mystified, Isn't It Midnight, You and I Part II
Absolutely wretched: WTTR....S, WISYA, and Family Man.

Obviously not my favorite album.

Caroline may have been the first song I fell in love with on this album. It was the first song that truly clued me in to what Lindsey was trying to do. Sonically, it is wonderful. The lyrics are kind of blah.

"Dusty fury on the mountaintop" - I love that! OK, perhaps some of the other lines are a little "get out the rhyming dictionary and find something that works"-sounding, but that one is great, IMHO.

Ummmm...and "Little Lies"??

And here's MY breakdown of Tango, for an even LESS number of people who might care what I think: ;)

Wonderful: Big Love, Everywhere, Isn't It Midnight, Mystified, Little Lies
Pretty good: Caroline, Tango In The Night, Family Man
So-so: Seven Wonders, You and I, Part II
BARELY Tolerable in the BEST mood: When I See You Again
Absolutely wretched under any circumstance: Welcome To The Room...Sara
Should've made the album: You & I, Part I, Book Of Miracles, Down Endless Street
Glad it was only a B-side: Ricky

With these I agree. You may now rest easy. ;)

Let me add to that:
Should've made the album: Juliet (of course this would mean BOM stays off) and Joan of Arc.

Poor Dougb - you had no idea ! Now ask why people don't like WISYA. Then some real fur will fly.

I'm no fan of the WTTR...S. Like I have said before, the lyrics are incoherent, the vocal is off. Sounds like she thoughtlessly strung lyric scraps of ten different songs together. I think it is one of her three worst songs ever. But, of course others love it !

I have the "Family Man" 7" single, the 12" maxi-single, AND the cassette-single... and you can't have any of 'em!
*neener-neener-neener* ;)I seriously don't understand how can you survive being the owner of that number of versions of that piece of crap. It's the most HORRENDOUS song ever recorded by anyone related with Fleetwood Mac in any possible way, a terrible shame on the people who accepted that Lindsey just had to put it on the album, and a pity for me because I bought the album and I hate that thing.

Ah, rant of the day... Feels so good. :D

I might as well take my turn and do my fast analyisis of Tango songs... for the infinitely small number of people who actually care...

Favorite - Isn't It Midnight
Very good - Little Lies, Big Love, Seven Wonders, Everywhere
Good - Tango In The Night, Mystified
Blah - You And I Part II, Welcome To The Room... Sara, When I See You Again
Bad - Caroline
Astonishingly bad - Family Man

Except for "Book Of Miracles/Juliet" which should have been added to the setlist, I don't think any of the other B sides was strong enough to be part of the album in the first place.

Song of the moment - Sara

For the one person around here cares what I think, namely me:

Here's what I would have done with Tango to make it perfect:

Pull our WTTRS and Whassamaddababy. Now, the latter I would keep if it somehow could be edited. Maybe cut down on the first 40,000 whassamaddas.

Then:

Big Love
Seven Wonders
Everywhere
Caroline
Tango in the Night
Mystified (why do so many people diss this song?)
Little Lies
Family Man
You and I, Part I
Isn't It Midnight?
You and I, Part II

Mystified (why do so many people diss this song?)

IMO it's not terrible, it's just a too slickly produced version of Over & Over or One More Lonely Night. It's just kind of there separating the two sides, for those of us who remember cassettes.

I'm intrigued by Mac songs that the songwriter doesn't sing lead on. Does anybody know the exact reasons that Chris sings Mystified (She does sound great, of course) and Lindsey sings Crystal? I know there are theories, but has anybody in the band ever commented?
