View Full Version : The Nicksfiles (not your average Stevie site) - any good?

(Edit: there is two threads for this because this Ledgie failed in creating a poll for the other.)
Just wanted to know what you all think of this site and its content:
http://home.tiscali.nl/thenicksfiles/
And it's not for totally serious people anyway so... ;)

I wouldn't recommend this site for the "airy fairy, faint of heart, I love Stevie as a goddess" crowd. And you do need a strong sense of humor and a little bit of sympathy as some of the articles can be quite rough on Stevie. but it's a great site with it's collection of unusual and humourous info about Stevie Nicks. whether fact or fiction, it's one of the few sites that does explore the rumours surrounding the Queen of Rock and Roll...
the site is a rare mixture of humor and pain...which kind of defines Stevie Nicks, the woman herself...

Well, to be honest, I never knew Mari cared so much about Stevie to make such a site. But, apparantly Mari does care about Stevie to go to all of this trouble.
As got the content, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Who am I to keep them down? If people take offense, they need to lighten up. Of course, that sword cuts both ways now doesn't it.

Yeah, as they say over at BuckinghamNicks.net board, "hate is not the opposite of love, indifference is". So Mari is obviously a Stevie shipper at heart still. ;)
And anyone with the skill could pull together a site like this for almost any other FM member, although it wouldn't be as huge in size I guess.
And if we are to believe Mari (according to her FUQ, and since she was a member at the old Ledge already) people did take offense at the 1991 Vox magazine article. That's the stuff of the legends. :o

Yeah, there's some sarcasm, but I think it paints a very vivid portrait of the stage she was at in her life. If anyhting, it's too brutally honest for its own good. I had no desire to know some of that stuff, but if she had no problme discussing it... Maybe it was healthy for her to talk about those things, who knows.

just to lend some support and verification to Mari comments regarding the VOX article and the uproar on the Ledge...I was also a Ledgie back then albeit a lurker and it did get very crazy around here...passions were very high...
unfortunately, we've lost some great posters over the years due to that and other situations but that's how new messageboards were and are born...giving birth is painful
The thing that upset me the most about that period was a 'vote' on whether a group of ledgies could stay or not. All that starting out with just a discussion about this article.. crazy indeed.

Well, since the comment on the Rumours Forum about "some people" speaking in third person, was a thinly-veiled dig at my attempt at tactfulness, I'll go right ahead and say exactly what I think of The Nicks Files. How's that? :D
And, of course, I'll be accused of lacking a sense of humour... because, as always, if you don't find something mean-spirited to be funny, it could only be because you don't have a sense of humour.... or, God forbid, you "don't get the joke."
Which is why a question like this is flawed from the start... those who like the site will deride anyone who doesn't, for being too serious, or being a fluffy "Chiffonhead," or any number of other chastisements that are designed to demean and dismiss.
It's been a long while since I've visited Mari's site, but the various articles that were there, I've read countless times on any number of "serious" Stevie sites. They're all still available elsewhere for anyone who wishes to read them.
The "Disney Theatre" mp3 that a few people were talking about, is also something I've downloaded from other sites (I believe it's still available on Burnish.net), and.... *gasp*... I thought it was hilarious. Even shared it with several of my friends.
And of course the various photos of Stevie are also available elsewhere.
About the only thing that was unique to "your average Stevie Nicks site," was the inclusion of various unsubstantiated rumours... and some of those I had already read on other Nicks sites as well.
So it's not like I have a problem with the content, per se.
But... and since I'm not beating around the bush here... The Nicks Files reads like a Junior High "Slam" book (for those who don't know, a Slam book was something that kids passed around in school, where you'd write something mean and nasty about some classmate you disliked).
Maybe other people see some kind of value in a site that focuses only on the most negative and/or embarrassing aspects of someone's life, but I guess I just don't.
I don't think Stevie's a perfect person, or a "Goddess,"or that she should be treated as a saint, martyr, victim, or whatever... she's a human-being, and has her myriad faults. I also don't think that the Vox article, or others like it, should be swept under the carpet and ignored... but I do have trouble understanding the mindset of gleefully and unremorsefully broadcasting someone else's faults.
Anyone here have the chutzpah to take all of the worst things they've ever done, their biggest mistakes, all their most painful and embarrassing moments, and create a site about it for all the world to see?
Probably not.
Anyway, to me the whole thing reeks of "Schadenfreude."
So, that's what I think... my "honest, direct criticism," which Mari asked for. :)
Blast away.

* Contents of emails, posts from other message boards, newsgroups or mailing lists authored by anyone other than yourself. Personal feuds will not be tolerated.

Blast away.
No blasting here. I personally love the site because I have a love/hate relationship with Stevie Nicks and I think her personality embodies some of the tackiest things not only of FM but of that era and I love reading a site that has most of it put together for the world to see. It's like the dark side of my fandom, the necessary kick in the butt that I need when I start to think of the band members too highly.
Your problem with the site then seems to be that it has collected a lot of the stuff that can be viewed as negative and that it hardly includes anything "positive" about Stevie. I understand that but personally I don't have a problem with it. It's material that anyone with hatred/a weird relationship towards Stevie could collect if she/he had the patience to do it. But I don't think that was Mari's intention. I think she wanted it to be a fun site and I think it succeeds in that. But I also think that creating similar ones for several FM members is an important project. The community needs things like these, IMO.
One tends to wonder would some of the things on the site come off less negative if Stevie wasn't so sincere and brutally honest. That 1991 Vox magazine article as an example again; while the writer probably attempted to create a negative impression of Stevie I still think she could have kept some of those things to herself. Reading it now; it seems like there's a person who isn't aware of the fine line between the private and the public. But I suppose most of that is attributable to that time period and the state of Stevie's personal life in those days.
In any case, while some of the things on the site disturb me, I still welcome it to flourish and ever expand.

being a very devoted Stevie fan, there are things on that site that disturb me but I too have a dark sense of humor so I mostly "get it". I don't think Mari's site is malicious but as she freely admits it can be negative.
and yet both Mari and Johnny Stew have stepped up to the plate and shown that they are devoted fans to both Stevie and FM.
so when Mari says her site is out there to balance the fluff sites, one of which I freely admit is mine...I believe her
and what Johnny says about the fine line between humour and mean-spiritedness also strikes a chord with me as well....I do my share of twirling at many a FM/Stevie concert...and have had to endure my share of "we're now supporting Stevies twinkie habit" jokes from my hubby
and it does hurt me (yes, I am still immature) and it gets my defenses up when my favorite celebrity is slammed on this or any board especially when I don't really know anything about the poster. but I refrain from starting any feuds for that very same reason...

I find much of the site depressing. Stevie had such hard times. I can laugh at the hairstyles as heartily as anyone else, and I readily admit Stevie can be hilariously ditzy. There are funny bits on there. But the "Stevie makes me want to" tag line for an article about a fan hanging himself outside a concert saddened me too much for me to endorse the site as the place to go for a fun hoot about Stevie. Wasn't exactly thinking anyone would take a look at my site anyway, actually!
That's the only thing I'm taking away from my site, though.
I certainly won't take away the orgy-articles :D
To all the ledgies giving their honest opinions in this thread: thank you I had no idea it was so appreciated :woohoo:
Thank you for taking my complaint into consideration and responding to it. I am very glad you are the kind of person who is not afraid to admit when she's made a mistake. :)

You know what? I think you're right, I crossed the line of tact and good taste there. :o . Yeah, I'm ashamed, where were my brains when I posted those? If you like your site I don't think you should change it. I was just giving an opinion. You pay for it so hey, why not? Hope you didn't take any offense to my opinion. :)
