I was in the video store Saturday night and I wondered what his best movie was. He isn't one of my favorites, but he's made a lot of good, entertaining movies. I finally decided that "Empire of the Sun" was his best one, even better than "Schindler's List."

I can watch "Empire of the Sun" over and over and not get sick of it. The kid (Christian Bale, the new Batman) was fantastic and I think he was Oscar material. Why this movie bombed is beyond my comprehension. The scenes in the prison camp were phenomenal, IMO.

The book by JG Ballard is superb, too.

Which one do you like best?

I haven't seen it in a while but I'd have to say Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

THAT was better than The Color Purple or even, lord, Hook?!

No wonder you're such a pot afficianado, you've been smoking it today.

No, that movie's not as bad as some make it out to be..

I don't know why I didn't mention him in the fave directors thread.

Well, let's see. I love everything about dinosaurs. So JP is one of my favorites. In general, all of his fantasy films are my fave. Close Encounters, E.T., the Indiana films..

I think E.T and Jaws made history. No doubt.

About his drama films, Empire of the sun and Saving PRivate Ryan. Definitely.

He has several masterpieces. Ok, but my favorite, is E.T.

you did not say to name the critically acclaimed one or the best one from a critical point of view  Clearly, The Color Purple was brilliant, etc. In fact, I have personally sung lead on "Maybe God is Tryin to Tell You Somethin'" Ya Can't Sleep at night (no not at night) - and while I was onstage with several large African American women with better voices that most and certainly mine  But, my personal fav. is 1941 - it was just so silly and frivilous "HHHHHHAAAWWWWYYYYYWOOOOODDDDDDD"

Hey, I like 1941, too. Lupone is a goddess.

I loooooooooooove Color Purple, though. I was disappointed with how Spielberg left out some of the books themes (lesbianism, more of the sister, the relationship with Glover's character at the end, etc.), but I do love it. Whoopi was great and Margaret Avery is surely missed by moi!

"Maybe I put a little Shug Avery pee in his lemonade next time, see how he like that."

Now, I always thought that he should tackle "A Raisin In the Sun." The best play EVER.

I think I liked The Color Purple the most, minus the sappy ending. I'm not a huge fan of Spielberg's film work - usually a bit sappy for me. To be honest, I'm more impressed by his work for the Shoah Foundation.

I love Speilberg. My favorite is probably Saving Private Ryan, but I really love all of his movies...Even Amistad, which seems to get bad press.

Apology for getting OT here, but I found a strange connection with Spielberg.

He was married to Amy Irving...

Who was born in Palo Alto, also where Lindsey's from.

Yep... I'm bored...

Agreed, Duel is great! Suspenseful, those are my fave films along with comedies.

I love Jurassic Park, the 1st one. I saw it like 3 times in the theater and countless times on video. I am fascinated by dinos, so it blew my mind when I first saw it. My mom hated it. LOL

I love the Indiana Jones films, the third one is my fave. "We called the dog Indiana."

Empire of the Sun is AWESOME!! I can't wait to see Christian as the new Batman...I hope he does a great job, I'm sure he will. :) How many times have I seen Newsies....oh shut up. :o LOL

I hated E.T.

The movie scared me as a child. It's still freaky. I don't think i've ever watched the entire film.

I would say probably Indiana Jones.....young, sexy, Harrison Ford...

See it. And I heard all the time as a kid how muck I looked like the Charlie kid, so I have a strange affection for the flick. Not a scary moment in the film. Of course, I enjoyed The Exorcist and The Omen as a child. ;)

Maybe. Someday ;) I've never seen The Exorcist either. I grew up with older cousins who liked all the horror flicks and a mother who has every book written by Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I still remember the first time I saw IT. I hate clowns. I was always waiting for some gigantic blood bubble to come spouting up the drain and explode on me

Looking back in retrospect, the only scary portion of IT are the scenes with Tim Curry dressed as the clown. Other than that, it's rather lame.

Misery---Kathy Bates...she played a great roll but yes, that movie had a few moments.

Okay now you've piqued my interest and all you had to do was mention the name Christian Bale! Have I mentioned that I love him? :xoxo:

He is an amazing actor!!!! Every role he's played has been stellar, except maybe for Laurel Canyon, but that wasn't his fault, it's just a bad movie.

He nailed the character of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

 I liked Laurel Canyon. It could've been MUCH better, but it was good for what it was, a smutty movie with lots of sex.

He is a fantastic actor, though. Have you seen the movie "The Land of Faraway"? That's another that he made when he was a kid and it's a guilty pleasure of mine. And I can't wait to see him as Batman, though nothing will beat the scene in Psycho where he was running after the hooker bare ass and wielding a chainsaw.

May 30, 2004 -- YOU might want to think twice before forking over your hard-earned cash to certain celebrity charities.

An investigation into celebrity-fronted charitable foundations by industry watchdog Charity Navigator found that nearly half of them did a mediocre or downright miserable job of distributing funds to the programs they were supposed to support in 2003. The group evaluated the charities' tax returns on the basis of money spent on administrative costs and fund-raising versus the amount that actually went to those in need.

Steven Spielberg's (right) Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, for instance, scored only one star on a scale of zero to five. The foundation, which seeks to preserve Holocaust awareness, spent 30 cents of every dollar it raised on administration, roughly three times the industry average. It also managed to lose $6 million last year.

That's a travesty. On top of that Bush naver gave them the money he promised them. The complete article does list good charities. Jerry Lewis and Bill Cosby's are among the good ones. I think alot of it depends on who's running it and how the funds are administered.
