View Full Version : Stevie's health and smoking ???
Sorry if this has been discussed already, but I read a review a week or so ago where a fan saw Stevie smoking during sound check. Don't know if it was a cigarette or some other little thing :D but if she is smoking again even if only once in a while, I can't help but feel disappointed. I have several interviews where she goes off for about 10 minutes about how quitting smoking was the smartest thing she has ever done etc.
I guess I'm just one of those people who gets extremely disappointed in people when they do something good for themselves and then after awhile go back to their old ways  Also makes me wonder, that if she is smoking again, this can't be good for her swollen vocal chords or whatever is ailing her at the moment.

That was in Atlanta If memory serves. I remember people running up to our group saying Stevie was smoking...not in the best interests of someone who suffers from bad cases of asthma quite often as she does. If she is currently battling swollen vocal chords (and they really aren't pleasant...from first hand experience I say this), i'm sure she's not smoking at the moment. They probably have her on a steroid inhaler so it's more comfortable for her to perform and ten to one she has been doing steam treatments a few times daily. If she's doing this and minding her throat while she isn't singing, her range should start to come back in five to ten days and her vocal chords will heal themselves automatically and she should be fine. Frankly, i'd rather she smoked a joint than a cigarette.
Frankly, i'd rather she smoked a joint than a cigarette.
Isn't smoking a joint the equivilent of like ten cigarettes?
Anywho, IMO, she shouldn't be smoking at all. I am a smoker myself, so of course I'm not going to chastise her, but someone with her asthma problems, swollen vocal cords, and the fact that she sings for a living, should NOT be smoking at all.

No, you're right, she shouldn't but the fact is that she does. With all of the bad habits she's had in the past, even though this one is incredibly harmful, I look at it this way...she could be doing something else and i'm very glad that part of her life is behind her.

GOOD GOD IN A SIDE CART.
I certainly hope this isn't true. Smoking is the single most idiotic thing a singer can do. It shaves the top off your vocal range, it roughens the sound of your voice, it minimizes the air you have to power your voice. As much as incorrectly singing, this is THE reason Stevie lost her upper range in the first place. If she is smoking again....well, it's her voice. Her choice. Her career. The very thought of it makes me wanna puke. Why not just gargle with Drano ?

Sorry but I can totally understand it if she IS smoking again indeed. Undoubtedly it's only the best intentions of some of you to say that she shouldn't harm her health, her voice etc., but it's definitely much easier said than done. It is an addiction and even if you manage to stay away from it for days/weeks/years, sometimes there is a little "spark" that makes you want to smoke another one. And there is no contradiction in being completely enthusiastic about having quit and telling it to the world and then months later suddenly smoking another cigarette.
I am currently trying to get rid of smoking once and for all (and God knows how many times I've tried already without any permanent success) and if you've experienced it as well you KNOW that your "inner voice of craving" can be very creative to give you good reasons to smoke just ONE MORE cigarette (as if there were any  ) and how that "voice" can push away ANY rational thoughts, no matter how good these arguments against smoking are. Going by my own experience as a smoker, I know what a fool I am when I light another one and yet I do it. (Nicotine can be a very powerful substance, and like Allen Carr put it correctly it's like some sort of brainwash when it comes to your habit)
I hope I don't sound too harsh or like a preacher man etc. in this post (this is definitely not my intention!) but apparently some of you haven't experienced that for yourselves - and be glad that you haven't! Put yourself in her place before judging her... Stevie isn't a careless or stupid person (I know none of you said that, but especially to you non-smokers some of us must give you that impression! ) just because she couldn't resist the temptation - she certainly KNOWS what consequences smoking can cause but like I said before it's easy to say "You're a fool, stop smoking because it's not good for you" when you're not addicted and you don't go through that "conflict" yourself, especially when you try to stay absent from it. :) (And BTW, congratulations to everyone who got rid of smoking without the problems I described above - I suppose I'm a more difficult case! )

Yes me and Steph saw her smoking in Atlanta. But remember Atlanta was the last place she performed SS. Which I guess caused her swollen vocal chords. So my assumption is that she is not smoking now.
I also heard that one joint equals like 3 cigs. So if she is having one every once in a while then so be it. If I was about to go on stage in front of thousands of people I'd be doing the same thing.

I think it's more the fact that she's around a myriad of people who continue to smoke. John smokes...probably a large percentage of the roadies smoke... if you're around it all the time and you're trying to not smoke, I can see where the temptation would be there to pick up a cigarette now and then.

The Poor thing - think of all the stress and pressure she's under. As I former daily smoker, I can well understand the urge to have one every now and again, and if she does, she does. I can also understand her wanting to light up a j before a show to help with her stage fright. No big deal IMHO.

Well, pot is a harsher smoke inhalation because unlike a cig., a joint has no filter. But, the chemical additives and the chemicals in the filter of a cog. are far worse for you than pot, which is natural, etc. In any event, both are not that great for the voice. Also, the fact that Stevie is 56 tommorow probably has a lot to do with it. Everyone's singing voice lowers with time whether they smoke or not :)

I've smoked enough cigarettes and pot to be able to comment on this, I think.
Yeah, smoking pot might be a harsher inhalation because you hold it purposely.. but I'll go on record as saying that I'd prefer to see her smoke weed over cigarettes. There are fewer chemicals in pot, it stinks less, and at least you get high off of it. Blah blah blah about the equivalent of cigarettes and carcinogens.. sorry, but comparable amounts of tobacco and weed have around the same amount of carcinogens. And don't forget that menthols have fiberglass and all that extra ****.
And you gotta think about it from a real perspective, not from a "drugs are bad" perspective - someone who is hooked on cigarettes is gonna smoke more cigarettes than someone who smokes weed will smokes joints. (Sorry, that sentence was hard to phrase.)

that she is smoking while being diagnosed with Epstein/Barr syndrome...
That cannot be healthy in the least (I know for a fact it isnt healthy because my wife Debbie suffers from Epstein/Barr which possibly contributed to her current diagnosis with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, aka Cancer of the lymph nodes/system. Debbie's Dr's said Epstein/Barr definitely can drain your immune system, And if she hadnt quit smoking several years back her current bout with this cancer could have been more severe than it is.)

If Stevie is smoking again, and this is all speculation on our part (none of us really know whether she is or isn't), she's being stupid. Not only that, but irresponsible, too. For someone who has had so many vocal problems thorughout the years, it boggles my mind that they would go back to one of those very problems that caused their voice to worsen.
She killed her voice in the seventies and eighties because she didn't know how to sing. She didn't have a clue and she tore her voice to shreds. Couple that with constant cocaine use. Then add a pack of cigarettes to that mix each and every day. It's no wonder that her voice is so low nowadays and not as flexible as it once was. No one's singing voice will ever get that low simply because they're getting older; it'll get that way if you don't take care of it as you're getting older. And Stevie never did take care of it. Inhaling steam and moisture before you go out onstage will help you get through the first song, nothing more. Same with cough drops; they don't work once they melt. Lord help her if she had the air conditioning on in the venues she performed at, that's death to a singer. She should've been practical when it came to the instrument that made her the steak: her voice. Swallow olive oil, drink orange juice, eat spinach, sing with your diaphragm and not your throat, etc. And no matter how many vocal exercises our gal does, if she's still puffing little sticks of suicide, none of them will help.
Of course, all of this smoking business is speculation, anyways. End rant.

That's awful, Brian. I suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for ages and I know the pure hell it is to feel that way. Epstein Barr and CFS are usually brought upon by throat infections and bacteria that lingers down into your body, so I suspect that's probably why Debbie's doctor said it was a good thing that she had stopped smoking!
EDIT: I forgot you were having your throat checked out! I hope I didn't set off any alarms!

Please do not flame me for this, but I know more than one professional singer (ages 20 to late 50's) who can still powerhouse vocal despite chain smoking
But, ITA agree smoking cigs. is not great for you, blah, blah, blah - but singing every other night and frequent exposure to different climate changes is IMO worse for the sort term effect on the cords. Plus and again, no singer I know at age 56 can consistently sing in the same high octave(s) they used to be able to sing in their 20's. Think about Babs, who rarely tours and compare the above middle C "People" to the current way below middle C "People" she is singing these days.
Anyway, no one should smoke period.

No flaming from me, doll. I didn't say that smoking was the one thing that caused Stevie's voice to degrade so much. I said that it was a great combination of smoking, drugs (not to mention alcohol!!!), and misuse of her voice. Combine all those things and it's no surpise at all. Plus, the hole in her nose and the asthma. You can tour all across the country for a year and still be in perfect vocal form as long as you take care of yourself. Stevie never really did that. She'd go onstage no matter what, even when she was sick and look how her voice has changed. Now, I love her deeper voice more than her high voice, but all the damage she has done to her vocal chords has resulted in not having much of a range at all and they get worn out much easier. You simply cannot defend her voice by saying that it has been a natural thing; it hasn't. It's the result of irresponsibility. There's a way to take care of your voice and there is a way to screw it up; Stevie has taken the latter road more than the former. All of her illnesses can be traced back to the misuse of her voice, too.
And I know plenty of singers in their fifties who can sing in the same octaves as they did when they were in their twenties. Cyndi Lauper and Patti Labelle come to mind. ;) To be honest, their voices have improved with age.

The only "rock" singers from Stevie's generation whose voices are still intact, that I can think of, are Ann Wilson and Linda Ronstadt. They both sang correctly, and neither of them ever smoked, as far as I can document. They've certainly both denied it (though I wouldn't have put it past Ann to have a joint or two 25 years ago).
Aretha is reputed to be a life long smoker - and her voice can still send chills up the spine. I can't testify to her range, as I don't follow her closely enough. Aretha is an anomaly. Patti LaBelle can still screech to wake the dead, but I am not sure of her smoking history. Regardless, it is hell on the voice. Just smoke for a week. If you're a singer, see how you can't hit the high notes after a week. I smoke. I know. It's a stupid and dangerous habit. But, I am not, nor will I be, a professional singer.

But if she has started again, it's really none of my business, because it is her body.

I never heard that about Ronstadt. If she was a blow head - evidently she didn't do it long enough to affect her voice. And clearly she never smoked it.
The Wilson sister's coke use is well documented, and they even talk about it. If they smoked some pot - again, it wasn't enough to tarnish Ann's pipes. Though pot smoke is also vile on the lungs, the day in day out 20 - 60 cigarettes a heavy smoker ingests is going to create an onslaught on the instrument that is far more damaging, methinks.

If I were on tour, hanging out, maybe fighting with Lindsey, dealing with the heat, travelling all over, fretting about my new haircut, deciding to spice up my stage attire all the while knowing people were commenting on my every decision I would be chain smoking. I agree with the poster who said "smoke em if you got em." If she wants to smoke a few butts for the love of Pete she is 55 years old and capable of making her own choices. We don't all have to agree with them. For those of you who are pissed off and ranting about her being irresponsible give the poor woman a break. I for one will be seeing them on Saturday....if her voice isn't up to par, I won't be disappointed. I am grateful to have the opportunity to see them at all.

ITA agree a pack a day is far worse than a joint a day :woohoo: But, in the end, both are bad, etc.

I imagine you're right, Jason, though I believe they're supposed to go in the mouth. ;) :wavey:

Enough already. We're tired of hearing how the cleaners can't get the stain out of your dress, Marissa. Who knew they hire White House interns from DipStix?

Just remember this time, the thong goes under it, not over it. See, this is why presidents notice you.
