I was just listening to some of the Camper Van takes on Tusk songs. I found myself gaining an appreciation for some of their takes that I didn't really appreciate at first. For instance, I am now digging "Walk a Thin Line," even though the xylophone riff is still a bit distracting. I am also getting into their version of "I Know I'm Not Wrong."

I still think their takes on "Save Me a Place," "Think About Me," "The Ledge" and "What Makes You Think You're the One" are quite inspired. "What Makes You Think You're the One" loses the anger but becomes a melancholy, amost introspective number. I still think "Sara" is too creepy and I wish they hadn't done that weird middle part in "Angel." Same for "Tusk," although there is a condensed version of "Tusk" that is much better.

Incidentally, Camper Van is now performing "Walk a Thin" line in concert, which replaces "Tusk."

Also, and believe me I don't get paid for this, Camper Van just released three new songs. You can get them at iTunes. A full-length album is coming in September.

The songs available at iTunes:

White Fluffy Cloud (bad-ass guitar rocker)
That Gum You Like (beautiful dreamy soundscape that you wouldn't expect with a title like that. Methinks this song was written in memory of George Harrison.)
51-7 (poppy number with grab-you-by-the-collar social commentary.)

Yeah, I have this. I hated it when I first heard it, thought it was an abomination even though it was supposed to be a tribute album. I'll have to go back and take another listen....maybe I'll grow to appreciate it as you have.

Thanks!! Jim O'Rourke is quite awesome. Unless you mean the sig I had of IKINW, in which case, Lindsey rocks too of course.

Very cool.

I met him when Sonic Youth came through Austin a few years back. They did a free show at Waterloo and he was REALLY nice and gracious. He even signed my husband's copy of Halfway to a Threeway! Anyway, I was most impressed by him, Thurston was totally in la-la land (I mean really, should I have expected anything less?!?!) and Kim acted like she was on 'ludes. She did sign my hand though! They were all great really....

IMO...

CVB does a BETTER job of What Makes You Think You're The One than Fleetwood Mac ever did... I think it works so much better as a laid-back kind of song. So kudos to CVB!

I also feel that their version of Sisters of the Moon is very strong... I like the emphasis on the bass drum and the cool sound it has. The way they "sing" it is kinda creepy, but no less awesome.

The Ledge, as always, is a masterpiece...

The rest of the songs are either on a par with FM or lackluster. I have not listened to the album in a while, however, so maybe I'll need to give it another go soon! :)

The main thing that bothers me about the Camper Tusk album is that a lot of the songs are drenched in reverb and other computerized effects. I understand this was necessary to restore some of the damaged recordings, but it gives some of the songs an artificial quality.

Overall, I think Camper did a great job. Their Tusk is irreverent, just as it should be. Hey, didn't Lindsey say that?

Can't say I like it much, but maybe I should hear it more. Anyway, if people are interested, I can put up a few songs for downloading on my site?

Ooh... I'd love to hear Over & Over, Mari. Only if you get a chance. :wavey:
Or maybe WMYTYTO, since everyone's raving about it.

Wow thank you Mari, I can't wait to get these.
They're not working at the moment, maybe because of all the traffic from the BN mp3s, but that's cool, I can wait. :wavey:

All working now. I love you, Mari.

OK I'm listening to these (excellent selections) now...

Over & Over... I actually really like it!

IKINW ... lol pretty crazy.. But.. the chorus ('ba-ba-ba') is what they're doing in concert now! Lindsey has been listening to this version and it inspired him to use vocal 'ba-ba's instead of the accordion.

WMYTYTO... Yeah how mellow can it get. Totally opposite to the original... which, remember, grew out of Mick banging his snare and Lindsey thumping the piano... so it's odd that the lyrics, which presumably came last, have inspired a whole new sound. Mind you, I don't care a terribly great deal for the original track.

WATL.... Much more loyal than WMYTYTO.... yet seems to completely lose the plot as it goes on. lol. I remember an interview from back when this was released where they said that WATL was the easiest to do.. it just came out off the bat.

Thanks for uploading all those, Mari. :xoxo:

Go stand in the corner, put a silly hat on and think about your attitude. You may very well get no dinner before going to bed

You're joking, right? because the real Joe knows that Lindsey did the bababa's on early takes of this song. As he has heard that over and over again since he bought the Tuskreissue and is constantly listening to the IKINW-takes.

And a Joe that does not care much for the original WMYTYTO?

I'm a bit confused now.

A Joe divided against himself will not stand.

How much for half-a-joe?

The first two IKINW outtakes have the accordion, and the last one has a lot of 'mm mm mm' but no 'ba-ba-ba' . :D

Then I heard it on the Tusk-reels?

Hey I am confused so maybe I dreamt it.

Isn't it fun that we are discussing the difference between bababa and mmmmmm?

We're sick :D

I've added three new mp3's on my site from Camper van Beethoven:
Sara, Storms and Sisters of the Moon. And since it was being discussed anyway, Liddy Buck from John Stewart.
Enjoy ;)

That sounds good. I don't have all the tracks.

Also, would you happen to have the tracks to Bombs Away? That album is not available, and I keep my fingers crossed that it will be reissued.

In the meantime...

I have Bombs Away.. on lp. I could try to figure out how to make mp3's of that.. actually, I know pretty much how it's done ;)

Since it's mostly lb downloads on my downloadpage.. but the Nicksfiles -ahem ahem- (http://home.tiscali.nl/thenicksfiles/) is dedicated to another bandmember, eehh... shouldn't that downloadpage have a Lindseyfiles-kind of page to go with??? (idea originally by Face Of Glass (c))
I'm willing to put some work into it (making webpages does take a lot of time, though) but I need more material.
brainstorm???

Well, don't forget, that other band member is also on those John Stewart recordings. So...

Mari- thank you for the Kingston Trio song. To my own surprise I must admit I like the original somehow better than Lindseys version from 92. I never was too fond of his version. I think he did a better job on different covers before and after that. Good night from Bochum, S :wavey:

it's a beautiful soft gentle song, isn't it?
I like the Centerstage live-version a lot, maybe better than the OOTC album version.
