View Full Version : Words You Just Hate For No Good Reason

I don't like the word "consequently" because my eighth grade Humanities teacher used to use it all the time and talk about how much she loved it.

I used to date a girl who hated the word "nipple" (Don't ask), and now the word makes me think of her. Hers. No, her. ;)

I don't like the word "syrup" and I can't really tell you why except that I don't like the sound. The word "supper" makes me cringe, but only because it makes me think I'm dining in Little House.

I'm sure there are lots more. Feel free to add to this stupid list.

Pus. That word just grosses me out. And I'm not sure if this counts, but when people are telling a story and they say "blah, blah, blah." Irritates the crap out of me. Not sure why.

That's all I can think of now. I'm sure there are more, though...

Definitely. I'm surprised how many different ways there are to misspell this word. I'm not a native English speaker, but even I know!
"Definately" "defenitely" "Definitly" etc... aaargh.
Why is it so difficult to spell it correctly?

"Pus" the word is as gross as real pus. It's just disgusting and conjures a mental image that you do not want to have. And pus is associated with pain and infection. Yada yada yada... ;) :sorry:

In the immortal words of one Miss Stephanie Lynn Nicks...baaaaaby I don't wanna know ;)

My mother has a habit of saying, "alls" as in "alls you have to do is." Of course, when you tell her it's not actually a word, she refuses to hear of it. Evidently, "alls" has found its way into her lexicon and refuses to leave.

I suppose I'm irritated more by people using words improperly than in the words themselves

Aaahhhh, yes, brings me back to the good ol' days of nursing school when we all realized we could not use a certain adjective to describe an infected wound:

Pus-filled - yes
Engorged with pus - OK
Draining pus - yup

Wound is very pussy - um, wait.......

Paula

PS - I hate THAT word to describe the female anatomy too, it's SO cheesey porno.

On Murphy Brown there was an annoying character (The Inconceivable guy from Princess Bride & Dinner With Andre) who used to say "All's I know." It was a running joke.

LOL...I also hate the word panties...such a stupid word, IMO

I can't think of words I hate...what I hate more is the way people mispronounce words...it's becoming more and more common and it really ticks me off..

Examples: people who say "Aks (axe)" instead of "Ask"....Ex-scape instead of Escape...Supposably instead of supposedly....and my HUGE pet peeve is when people drop certain parts of words...like "Fou-en" instead of fountain..."MOU-EN" instead of Mountain...haha..I don't know if I explained that last one well...that one's hard without the benefit of actually hearing the examples...

So yeah...I can't think of words I don't like...it's mostly the way people say them...

I wasn't going to bring this up, but since Paula already went there...

I had a female friend who hated the word "pussy."
And I'm not even talking in just the slang sense... she would flip if you said "pussycat," "pussy willow," etc.
Seriously, her daughter is growing up thinking "Puss 'N Boots" is called "Kitty 'N Boots."

Myself and another friend had some good laughs at her expense one night though, because she threw a fit over us discussing Bond movies, and mentioning "Octopussy."
So... we found a way to work that word into the title of EVERY Bond movie. :D
Some were merely groaners, but others were hysterical. :D

Anyway...
I'm with Deanna... I usually "hate" the way people pronounce words, rather than actual words themselves. But I'll admit that, in discussions about the members of Fleetwood Mac, I find myself hating the word "better."

I was the same way, until my daughter was told by her babysitter that girls wear panties; boys wear underwear. So that has been what we call them ever since, but I still prefer underwear.

It bothers me, too, when people butcher words and use things like uh-huh, huh-uh, gonna, wanna. They mainly bother me at work when a witness uses them, because with some of them I have to pause and think how to write it, because it's just not natural for me.
A couple words that came up this week: feets, foots, ranned.

Kathleen Turner's husband in the movie is a dentist. He works on the husbands teeth and I believe he gives them specifications as to what they can and cannot eat. They start ripping into these chicken breasts and chowing down while Kathleen Turner watches from outside of their window. The closeups they do of their teeth are totally gross

I hate buzzwords and euphemisms. Like everybody now is saying, "Does that make sense?" every other minute..

paradigm-another one- buzzword
challenged or challenging instead of hard or difficult-euphemism

anyways-there is no such English word=:-)

I hate it when Americans (not a national hate thing, it's just that it's an American expression, actually I hate it when it comes from the mouth of a person of any nationality) say 'my bad'. Argh! My mistake will do just fine thankyou.

Don't worry, Lux, I'm American and I hate this expression too. I just don't get it. Not to mention the fact that I have a VERY low tolerance for poor grammar.

It really pisses me off...this trend of putting bogus words in the dictionary simply because people don't know how to speak properly..so if people can't learn the proper way we'll just turn the bogus idiotic way into "real English" by putting it in the dictionary....it needs to end...!!

I am pretty sure its been a word since at least the 70's as one of the dictionaries I have here is dated from 1976. In any event, I HATE THAT WORD. It sends me "up the stairs and down the hall" in anger

My boss always says he wants to "piggyback" on other people's comments, meaning add to them. He also says "on board" too frequently (as in "Are you on board with this idea?), considering his name is not Captain Stubing.

I hate the word feces. I think it's the rarew time when all the slang terms for a word sound alot less dissgusting then the appropriate term. Hell I didn't even know this was the appropriate term for what comes out when you go #2. I always thought it was really just called poop. And then a few months ago I find out it's called feces and man I'd take Poop, Crap and **** over that disgusting sounding feces any day.
