from MusicTap.net -- personally, I'm disappointed that the DVDs aren't in 5.1 surround.

---

Here's your BIG news of the day. Reprise Records have a new Fleetwood Mac title on the fast track to your store. The title, Fleetwood Mac - Live in Boston, will be issued as a CD/2DVD set making quite a package for fans. This title will come at you in basically the same way via two approaches. The first will be as a CD digipak with 2DVD while the second is as 2DVD with a bonus CD. Here's the scoop:

We'll start with the tracklisting ('cause I knew you'd ask) -

* DVD1: The Chain / Dreams / Eyes of The World / Peacekeeper / Second Hand News / Say You Will / Never Going Back Again / Rhiannon / Come / Gypsy / Big Love / Landslide.
* DVD2: Say Goodbye / What's the World Coming To / Beautiful Child / Gold Dust Woman / I'm So Afraid / Silver Springs / Tusk / Stand Back / Go Your Own Way / World Turning / Don't Stop / Goodbye Baby.
* CD: Eyes of the World / Dreams / Rhiannon / Come / Big Love / Landslide / Silver Springs / I'm So Afraid / Stand Back / Go Your Own Way.

If you need a quick fix before the set comes out, watch for a PBS special that will show a 60 minute view of this concert around release date. Audio-wise, the DVDs are kept in the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo realm.

Cool! - thankyou, YellowJeep!

EOTW as the CD opener - great! Cause I'd be skipping straight to it anyway! I'm disappointed with the focus on Dance material for the CD... but at least there's EOTW, Stand Back and COME!!!!

Uhm, I'm thrilled that the whole show is indeed there (at least I think that's the whole show, just from a quick perusal of the tracklist), but I'm BAFFLED as to why it's split up over two DVDs.

A single-layer DVD holds about 133 minutes of high quality information, i believe, and a dual-layer disc will hold 240 minutes.

It's VERY odd that they broke up the show this way... but I'm guessing it must be a quality-control/cost-cutting thing. Since a single-layered disc, would have to have lower quality in order to fit a longer program, and dual-layer disc would be more expensive to produce.
Anyway, I'm not going to complain too much... I'm just happy as a clam that they're releasing it! :)

Thanks for posting this, YellowJeep! :)

Hey - you're welcome! I just found the info tonight, and am glad to share it.

About the 2 DVDs. I would have to agree. I suspect it's the result of two things: first, by using single-layer DVDs (as is probably the case), they reduce the cost of manufacturing; and secondly, a CD/(2)DVD package sets this one apart from a lot of the CD/(1)DVD concert combo-packs by other artists, most of which are economically priced at the same cost of a CD. Thus, the band and record company can justify selling this set for more $$.

Thanks for sharing the info with us! Exciting stuff! Maybe it's time for me to go and pre-order from Amazon.com. No word of when this will be released in the UK

This seems very strange, producing a double layer disc is not really more expensive than producing a single-layer one (we're talking a few cents here!). And nobody really produces single layer-dvds anymore. The only reason why the concert would be divided over two (dual-layer!) dvds would be that this way you have less compression and therefore audio and sound quality would be amazing.

So the fact that the dvd will be in stereo doesn't make sense. You would expect a full-bitrate DTS track at least, to make use of the extra disc space. And with Fleetwood Mac releasing their albums in 5.1 surround, I just can't believe the dvds will just be in stereo.

So my bet is: 2 dvds with audio in stereo, Dolby 5.1 and DTS.

That sounds like a logical conclusion, but I wish they wouldn't bother. Like with the dance, there was no need for both, there's so much more they could release
instead of these audio variations.

I only partially agree. When done right, a DTS track will blow you right out of your seat. And The Dance's 5.1 track was good at the time, but sounds too subdued now IMO.

It's nearly unbelievable not to release a concert DVD in multi-channel nowadays.
That must be a bug!

One of the hallmarks of Soundstage is that they do all of their productions in 5.1. I would be surprised if this is not a 5.1 release.

no 5.1 surround sound...Seems lately a few artist have shelved the 5.1 sound mixes due to some unexpected & unresolved manufacturing problems during the production of their DVD releases (ie-Queensyrche's newest live DVD)

IMO the included CD could've used a few unreleased rarities that were recorded during the SYW sessions to fill out the disc.

I'm surprised too. It's gotta be in 5.1 because that's the standard nowadays--especially on new releases (as opposed to reissues, where 2.0 is often a concession to the standard of the original release). Also, where is the documentary? The conclusion of the documentary, where Stevie and Lindsey are seen going onstage, seems like the perfect place to dovetail into the show! Oh well, I'm just happy to have a souviner.

For all those who loved the original series, we are proud to announce that SOUNDSTAGE has been reborn! The production uses state of the art high-definition video equipment, and is digitally recorded and mixed in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Upcoming broadcasts include artists like Tom Petty, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald, Lucinda Williams, and many more. Check the AIRDATES section of the website to view your local listings.

Above is a PBS PR release on their website about the production values used for soundstage. So to go to 2.0 is odd.

What a disappointment.

First off, almost every DVD on the market is a dual-layer disc. There are only a handful that aren't. In order to include all the extras that a DVD usually comes with, it has to be dual-layer. Also, dual-layer discs are no more expensive than single-layer discs when you purchase movies. I suspect they simply broke up the concert as an excuse to charge more money. Greedy bastards.

The CD? Bleh. I already have Rumours and The Dance.

Not necessarily. Sony has a line of DVDs that are titled the "Superbit Collection" and, by eliminating all of the extras, they use the rest of the room to make the picture and sound phenomenal. Anyone who has a SUperbit DVD is astonished at the quality. The first one I bought was Panic Room and I sat there in amazement! :wavey: So, it is possible to relase it on one disc and have the quality be out of this world.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Dreams, Rhiannon, Big Love, Landslide and Stand Back but no Peacekeeper, Say Goodbye and Goodbye Baby.

It never ceases to amaze me how these stupid track listings are always a huge disappointment. Why not just release The Dance again!?

Because the "ten year olds" won't buy it if it's all songs they don't recognize.

Seriously, this band suffers from delusions of grandeur. They think the general public is going to buy this en masse and it won't. Why else would they release The Dance Part Deux? Either that or they wanted to release this with as little effort as possible because they knew full well that the true fans would buy it. I'll probably just tape it off of TV and then get it when Half.com has it used.

It really sucks being a fan of this band nowadays. They always miss the boat and release something half-assed, when this could've been great.

You guys, it's entirely possible that this will be released exactly like MusicTap says and we'll all be a little disappointed. Then again...

I have followed The Digital Bits (which "presents" MusicTap) almost since its inception. There are some very knowledgable people that run and work on that site, but they have a section called "The Rumor Mill" with very early info on DVDs that very rarely turns out to be completely right... they're just trying to sate our appetite for DVD releases. That's what this sounds like. Seriously, I wouldn't hang my hat on this info. Think about it:

-- Soundstage is shot in Hi-Def widescreen video, which has as its standard Dolby Digital. This could mean 2.0, but for all the other Soundstage performances released on DVD so far, it has meant 5.1 (and, in the case of Allison Krauss, DTS). Why would Reprise skimp for one of its best artists?

-- The footage we've seen so far (remember Second Hand News) from the concert has been widescreen, which all but confirms it was shot just like the other Soundstage concerts, in Hi-Def.

-- The Destiny Rules footage has all been widescreen, and we've been hearing all along it was shot with DVD in mind. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we got the concert on one DVD and the Destiny Rules special on the other.

-- There's almost no difference in manufacturing costs between single and dual layer DVDs. In fact, single layer DVDs might even cost more these days because it would be a step back for manufacturers to do it again. I can't think of a single-layer movie release from a major studio in the last two or three years. Some bonus discs are single-layer, but I simply can't imagine doing a concert that way.

-- Honestly, I don't care what's on the "bonus CD." Once I have the DVD, I can make a personal CD of anything I want from the DVD (and anyone can with just a little equipment and a little time).

Just my $.02. I could be very wrong, but releasing it the way MusicTap says they are would be more than a major disappointment. It would be embarrassing, given the capabilities of the format, and even a step backwards from "The Dance."

Thanks for the info. I am glad we get the concert uncut. The CD, however, blows big chunks. I guess I will be listening to EOTW, Come, and Stand Back. Mercy. They should have at the very least dumped the Trinity of Dreams, Rhiannon, and GYOW. What about the new material? How about GDW? That is better live nowdays than Rhiannon. NGBA? Oh, well.

GDW is my fave live song of hers on this tour!! Dump Dreams and Rhiannon and put GDW and Beautiful Child.

WHY can't they put the entire concert on the CD?

Ah well, thank God for technology, we'll all have the entire show on a CD before we can blink.

So it's a good cover after all. It represents what's in the inside. What a waste. A second dvd with LB's soundstage and the doc would have been so easy. And so much more value for money. Embarrassing. :distress:

Blah. I thought the idea was to keep promoting Say You Will tunes, or to have 'new' material (since The Dance was so great with the classics). Good for "Eyes Of The World" & "Come" on the CD; but then I was thinking about "Peacekeeper"; "Say You Will"; "Say Goodbye"; "Goodbye Baby" and/or "What's The World Coming To" would have made it to the CD. Or the other more 'obscure' (as in 'not played in The Dance') tracks like "Beautiful Child", "Second Hand News" or "Never Going Back Again"...

CD is quite redundant, I'll stay with the bootlegs, thank you very much.

O.K. guys look at it that way.
We can be happy that they put the entire show on the DVD`s. I expected them to cut several from the new songs out to keep the occasional Rumours fans happy. I.e. the Dance 2004. The CD is rubbish but meaningless- we get the concert as it was and that`s enough for me.

Yeah, but if it's true that the concert is broken up into two DVDs, it's meaningless. At least to me.

PBS is going to broadcast the whole show in June, I'll tape it and, like I said, get the DVD when it's cheap on Half.com.

i have a hard time believing that they would stay in 2.0 stereo......considering the dance dvd is in 5.1 and i got that in 99....i'm not sure when it was released but thats when i got it. and i havent seen a brand new concert release in the past 4 years thats not in 5.1. thats ridiculous....unless its an old concert just being released on dvd like simon and garfunkels concert in the park.

I wouldn't have minded if they had dropped "Rhiannon" for "Gold Dust Woman" (which wasn't on 'The Dance' CD), and "Landslide" or "Silver Springs" for either "Beautiful Child" or "Goodbye Baby."
I also wouldn't have minded "Say Goodbye" instead of "Big Love" or "I'm So Afraid."

But I have to say that I'm not at all surprised by the track-listing, and frankly, I'm not too disappointed, because I'm positive that someone will rip the entire show from the DVDs to CD anyway. :)

I don't believe they're airing the "whole show" on PBS... it's true they're doing a 2-hour special, but I'm assuming they'll still have to edit about 25 minutes out.

Also, if they have built-in "pledge breaks," then the show will be even shorter.

They don't have pledge-breaks during Soundstage. Or on most of their programming, actually. (At least on my local station.)

And don't expect them to keep the *entire* show on the DVD. There's going to be a lot of stuff edited out between the songs, the same as the TV broadcast. They probably will edit out the drum solo for TV, but I won't complain. Actually, it'll give me more of a reason not to buy the DVD. ;)

Consider yourself lucky! If there's a music related program aired on WQED (our PBS station), you can bet your sweet bippy, they'll break away a few times for pledging. :(

When I say "entire show," I'm not referring to all of the time between songs, and the various "speeches," etc... just that they're keeping the entire setlist intact for the DVDs, while I don't expect every song to actually air on PBS. :)
But yeah, I'm with you... I won't shed any tears at the loss of the "World Turning" drumpad solo, that's for sure!

I don't know the exact timing of the disc yet, of course, but it's safe to say that the longer songs... "Come" runs nearly 8 minutes, and "I'm So Afraid" clocks in around 9 minutes... put it over the top, length-wise.
"Rhiannon" and "Stand Back" are also a little longer than average, at about 5 minutes and 6 minutes, respectively.
