Hey guys...I was listening to "The Chain" from the Dance album and I think I've come to the conclusion that its my favorite version of the song. It's my favorite rock and roll song ever, but WHICH version is the tough question. I also really like the Mirage version, and the Tusk documentary version aside from the Rumours album original.

So what's YOUR favorite?

Mirage Tour is explosive.

Stevie scares me in this but I love it!

The Mirage video version is the greatest version EVER, IMO. It's so full of energy and power.

I love the bounce in the verses and Stevie's voice in the chorus.

I like the Tusk version, myself. I like how it starts off slow and then builds to that guitar solo.

I do love it live, especially Mirage tour, BUT it's when I hear it on Rumours that it gives me the chills. Something about the guitar and the high harmonies, so great!

I still don't have and have never seen the Mirage video so I can't base my opinion on that, but I like the album version... its a little more mysterious than the others Christine's little "Stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill hear you sayin" during the chorus gets me all the time.

Mirage video. It's so over the top and the looks that Lindsey and Stevie give each toher while they're yelling the song send chills.

Nothing like trying to skew the results up front.

The term "hideous Time era" is uncalled for in a poll situation. Sure, if that's how you feel, fine, no problem; then put it in your reply, but to use it in a poll point description is damned wrong.

I would think that even if that era of "The Chain" WASN'T my favorite, which it is.

People talk about how good the Mirage version of the The Chain is, but I've only heard poor quality version of it so i'm going to go with The Dance version. Does anyone know where I could get a better quality version?

I think you have to see it really. If you think of the way Stevie and Lindsey look at each other during Silver Springs on The Dance, and then multiply it by about 10, you'll get an idea of the screaming and shouting and looks they do at each other on the Mirage Video.

Some of the latter Tusk performances sound like they have this sort of energy though.

I gotta go with the Mirage. That was the first live version I had ever seen or heard of the song and I was just blown away. It seems so raw and untamed...very intense.

Its cool to see all these responses and everyone seems to be going with the Mirage version. Except for ChiliD. cant understand why you picked the Time era other than just to be different. It's nowhere near as emotional nor does it ring true to the core of the song. Not only that, but the only original members playing it there are Mick and John. Damned wrong? I thought it was damn funny. All in good fun.

yeah I think that's just "a little bit ;) " like trying to sway the poll. I love that Mirage video performance of the song, but I love some of those Rumours tour Chains. And then there's the SYW tour version I love alot more then The Dance. And of course the album version does have some things the live versions do not. But after all that I'll settle for The Mirage version.

It's gotta be the 'Mirage' concert video version for me, too.

You watch that performance, and you can't help but think that if there weren't a few thousand witnesses in the audience, Stevie and Lindsey might not have waited until 1987 to go at each other's throats!

I prefer the "Rumours" album version...

The Mirage video version is great to watch, but just listening to it, one notices how strained Lindsey's voice gets and it detracts from the pleasure of the song. Therefore, I'm going with the Dance.

I agree 100%. The Time band was quite talented, and given the proper chance, I feel, could've really done something successful. Bekka was HIGHLY underrated! Even though Mirage is my favorite, I'm voting Time!!!!!

Well...ChiliD says a lot of things that are uncalled for when people feel the need to express their opinions. Sorry to step on your precious feelings. Its JUST a poll. And no, the TIME era band wasnt underrated. Christine, Mick, and John were the only thing cool about that record. The rest of it was unbelievably lackluster.

And the band could've done something great "given the chance?!" They WERE given the chance. They recorded an album and had a tour!!! It was crap-EEE.

Good observation. The Mirage tour is the best performance of this song, however, the best version musically and vocally by both Stevie and Lindsey is probably The Dance version. Mick's drums are amazing, and Lindsey's guitar has never sounded better than on this version. So, take the Mirage performance and the Dance's sound and you have probably one of the best songs every performed live! Well, besides Silver Springs of course...

Well, gee...excuuuuuuuuuuse me. But, the Time era seems to have gotten TWICE the number of votes the Tusk era did, so...

About the Time lineup, yes they are underrated, and their version of "The Chain" was pretty much superb.

About the original question... I'll stay with the original version, from the album. I don't think any live version has surpassed its greatness.

Didn't Mick once say that the Time lineup was a great band, they just shouldn't have used the name Fleetwood Mac or something? I seem to remember someone posting the words "great band, wrong name," but I don't know if that was his/her comment or if Mick (or a band member) actually said it.

That was Mick's comment. I have an interview CD with him saying exactly that.
