who do you think is overrated?

simon and garfunkel. some of their songs are ok, and i listen to them sometimes, but the lyrics are too pretentious, sometimes in a faux-dylan fashion.

some lines that grate on me are:
"silence like a cancer grows"
"and the vision that was planted in my brain"
"sail on, silver girl, sail on by"

Sheryl Crow (I hate every song I've ever heard from her. First Cut is the Deepest is a decent song, but I much prefer Rod Stewart's version)
Joss Stone
Coldplay (I just don't see what's so amazing about them. I liked The Scientist and Clocks, but other than that, eh.)
Sarah McLachlan (I like Fallen, though)
Tori Amos
Maroon 5
The Dixie Chicks
Rush
Kiss
Nirvana (Even though I love some of their songs, I think they're pretty overrated.)
Evanescance

I'm sure I'll come up with some more later.

I love Aerosmith, but Joe Perry is not the best guitarist in the world, I much prefer Jimi Hendrix, Lindsay Buckingham, or Tom Scholz

Well, I like Simon & Garfunkel :)

Yes, some of their lyrics are pretentious, but their voices just sound so good together.

I was going to say that I think Kurt Cobain is overrated, but someone already mentioned Nirvana. And I never got into Evanescense.

Barbra Streisand is overrated, as is Diana Ross, and all the "divas" who followed in their footsteps (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, et al).

A friend of mine hates Aretha Franklin. While I think she was fantastic in her prime (late '60s, early '70s), her voice has deteriorated to the point of being unlistenable over the last several years, and I just cringe when I hear her sing now. So, perhaps she's become a tad overrated. Even though I love Aretha, Etta James is a more powerful singer (and she still has her voice intact).

I love S & G, & they just (and finally) announced Houston.

I'm not much for Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, or Prince.
I'm not even counting the Britney & Justin crew.

I'll forgive you for listing Sheryl Crow, Kate. Just don't let it happen again.

Ones that I can't stand but everyone else seems to love:

Nirvana (Ugh. Purely annoying.)
Aerosmith
Kiss
Led Zeppelin
Celine Dion
Whitney "Cracked" Houston
White Stripes
Stevie Nicks (Just checking to see if you're paying attention.)
The Beatles (I REALLY don't like them. Wings is okay, though.)
Simon and Garfunkel
Grateful Dead

I could really piss alotta people off, but I won't post who I think is overrated...(I tend to NOT listen to 80%-90% of the current Flavor for the weak..."Go Bahhhhh for me ya sheep")

I agree with a lot of mentions here (and strongly disagree with many of them), but Sheryl Crow is one I have to chime in on. I think it's great that she is a multi-talented musician and I think her voice is pretty amazing, but 95% of her songs leave something to be desired for me. Don't even get me started on All I Wanna Do or Soak Up The Sun :) . Unfortunately, she strangely leaves me thinking it's a shame she can't write better songs because, combined with her other talents, she would really be a knock-out if she could. On the other hand, she seems somewhat aware of this which I give her a lot of credit for. I know she said somewhere that she knows she is not capable of writing the type of deep, meaningful songs that Stevie is. Despite this, Sheryl is still better than a lot of stuff out there...I think it's the fact that all of the older artists think she's the Holy Grail is what leads to the feeling of overrated-ness.

I'll also throw in a big agreement with Jewel.

IMO, I don't think Britney and Justin are overrated...they're good at what they do, which is make pop music, dance and put on a show. To me, "overrated" means people deemed as being incredible at what they are setting out to do, but seem to be falling short of the mark.
I think they're well aware that they are not doing anything that is going to change the world. Justin is also an amazing vocalist, as is Christina Aguilera.

Huh? I'm no historian because I don't like Wings? That doesn't make sense. I don't like them, that doesn't make me lazy.

No...I don't care if you haven't been enticed to pursue their other work by the singles you likely know. Just pointing out that it was unfair to call all of their music "muzak" when you don't know. "Done all your homework" was in quotes because it's an expression. :woohoo:

Just trying to defend one of my favorite bands here! My emotions are all stirrrrrrrred up! Can't help it.

Yeah, I know, it's a stretch. I see it more of a regression of what Zeppelin were doing. Or perhaps what Zeppelin would would be if they were a modern band. Anyway, I don't like it so much. I hate the fact that we are told the White Stripes are good. We must appreciate them, they are the new rock music. Ah, no, they're the old rock music and they're only noticable because there's bugger all else out there.

I completely agree...I hate the fact that we are fed what we should think is good or bad (in regards to anything, actually). I just know that, for me, The White Stripes are one of the most incredible bands I've ever heard (without comparing them to anything) and I do think they're important to have around right now. I hope people don't prevent themselves from liking them (or any other artist) simply because of what they're being "fed". To me, in a roundabout kind of way, that puts you in the same boat as those who like them because they're told they should. :)

wondergirl9847

I hate the fact that we are fed what we should think is good or bad (in regards to anything, actually).

I feel that way in regards to Justin Guarini. People never gave him a chance because they were told by the "media" that his album sucked, it most certainly DID NOT. Of course, Justin said that 90% of the album was NOT him and the next album, which will have him co-writing his own stuff will be closer to his personality. :) I just get so frustrated at the hate spewed towards him when people don't even LISTEN to his music. :( If you hear it and don't like it, fine, but give it a chance at least.

WHY do people diss stuff without hearing it first?

I don't like to be TOLD what to like. I do read reviews of movies, music, etc, but that doesn't make me go, "Oh, if they don't like it, I won't either." That's stupid. Think for yourselves people!!!! In the words of our own Brian....don't be a sheep! LMAO!!

I guess I'll go ahead and answer this question. Be warned. LOL

Beatles (Okay, they were first, but that doesn't mean they are the best. JMO)
Rolling Stones (WTH is Mick Jagger a sex symbol? Where is that vomit icon? Boring, sorry.)
Sheryl Crow (Never have liked her)
Led Zeppelin (Stairway is an okay song, but overrated)
Barbra Streisand (UGH!! WHY do people think she's so great?)
Toby Keith (Sick of him)
Dixie Chicks (Go to battle with TK and END it already)
Kenny Chesney (Agreed, Brian. Why is he popular?)

As far as babs goes, I didn't know people thought she was great. Isn't she considered a joke? Well I've never heard of anyone liking her.

Oh youth

La Striesand was/is one the greatest selling performers of all times. She is just older now that is all. Her voice was the thing legends are made of and is still pretty good. Plus, she could/can act and direct and she is a natural at bawdy schtick (What's Up Doc and Funny Girl being amongst her best).

Mind you, I am so huge fan, but she is highly talented and highly regarded even if her popularity has waned as she got older.

If she went on tour today, she would sell out the largest arenas in every city just like she did on her last two farewell tours

I think Elton John and Sting are overrated now. They're always nominated for an Oscar for some insipid song they have written for a Disney movie. They usually seem to win too.

I like Sheryl Crow although she is everywhere. I don't like hearing her songs on commercials. That drives me nuts.

I like Led Zep, Nirvana, and the Beatles.

Ok, I didn't know that.

Australia is very cynical as a nation and where others might embrace, we often just laugh. If she went on tour here there wouldn't really be any television media to advertise through, (wait, there's one morning show she might fit in with) ie. there's no market. I, more so than most, find that genre very hard to buy into.
Her last two tours there, the most recent of which was in 2000, were huge successes

This is important for all of us to remember in this thread, eh? :)

I do agree about the Divas being overrated. Houston, Ross, Streisand. I think all of them have great works but that doesn't turn them atuomatically in divas.

I also thinkl the 60s are overrated. More than overrrated, my point is that the following decades were underrated.

Some artists I feel are over-rated:

- Sheryl Crow (I never liked her music. Sorry!)
- Nirvana (I agree - They are really just annoying)
- Rolling Stones (I hate Mick Jaggar's voice!)
- Barbara Streisand
- The Polyphonic Spree (They sound like a cross between The Brady Bunch and The Tom Tom Club to me. No thanks.)
- The White Stripes (Though Seven Nation Army was an OK song. But just OK!)
- The Dixie Chicks
- Limp Bizkit (Terrible.)

No, just got them for about $1 each and I'm (obviously) a Beatles fan so I had to check them out.

Steisand toured Australia in 2000? I must have been too busy being under 60 to notice. My sincere apologies to the babs. I'm sure the prime minister went along. Actually this makes sense. Those below approximately 60 are more and more cynical. The slightly older on the other hand, well they're your average bunch of propaganda eating, diva embracing people. I stand corrected, or indeed sit corrected..........holy crap, it's 5am! I need to go to bed, but I won't sleep, eh, I'll just stay here.

I dare say the entire crowd was not 60 or over  I mean like Stevie and FM, Babs carreer spans four decades and certainly the Stevie and FM crowds are multi-generational even though FM is seen as an older band, etc. Plus, BS' records still sell very well.

Do you own any of her albums (Very Best of SC doesn't count)? Just asking because if you did, I don't think you'd be saying you wished she'd write better songs; she's a genius, musically and lyrically. It saddens me that she made that comment about her songwriting because a great deal of her stuff is just as moving as Stevie's, IMO. The Globe Sessions is amazing and her song "Redemption Day" is, IMO, one of the best songs ever written.

I think that someone needs to actually listen to an artists albums, not base their impression of them on hit singles (which Crow has had tons of, but they don't necessarily represent her albums).

And she is the last of a dying breed when it comes to old school musicians, there's no way around it. The girl plays almost ever instrument, writes her own songs, produces her own albums, tours almost yearly; it's no wonder that all the classic artists love her, she's doing what they did. When you get the endorsement of Bob Dylan, you're up there in my book. ;)

As opposed to a Fleetwood Mac concert?!

I'm not a big Babs fan, but next to Michael Jackson, she's probably the most famous person in the world. Her career spans forty years, many, many generations and she's the biggest female entertainer of all time. I saw one of her shows and the crowd was just as diverse as a Mac concert.

It has nothing to do with the diva attitude or anything of that ilk; it has to do with her talent and the way people respond to it. I am not a big fan, but you could put any song in front of Babs and she could sing it as if she wrote. She can truly sing any song with so much emotion that you'll stand in awe as you listen. She interprets them like no other.

For millions of people, she represents a great deal. I don't think she can be dismissed as being an old fart of a diva. She's practically American royalty.

I agree (don't fall over ) SC is great at what she does. My only problem with her is I do not care for her voice that much. I agree she has a good voice, it just is not what I like to hear sometimes.

I also think that the respect she is given by pop royalty (Michael Jackson), rock royalty (The Eagles, FM, La Nicks, etc.), country royalty (Emmy Lou, DC), and folk rock royalty (Dylan) lends her additional credibility.

First off, I was going to stay away from this thread because I *HATE* the term "overrated". Who is anyone to say what is over rated? What is that based on? If it's based on your opinion then it would be more appropriate to say, what artists don't you like? Or what artists do you dislike that everyone else seem to love? But overrated?? I just refuse to use that term...

SOO..I'm offering musicians that I personally do not like...

Mariah Carrey

I think it is based on what WE think it is overrated. Yes, it is based in my opinion, but not only about them, it is also based on what THEY SAY about them. For example I do like Barbra and Michael J, but some of their works. So they are overrated when media or anybody says they are the "queen" or "king". (though I think that "king of pop" is a title Michael himself said, but I'm not sure.)
Barbra has a beautiful voice. But it is hard to say if she's better than Whitney. Different styles, different kind of voices.

Overrated is also when a just new singer or band comes and media say... "the new Elton John", the "new king", or "greater than the Beatles!", "famous in the whole world", or worst of all.. "the best album in rock history"

jadegypsy
04-26-2004, 03:26 PM
My Overrated:
Mariah Carey (I don't care if she can sing every note, I just don't feel anything from her songs)
Selena (good songs, too short of a career to really put so much acclaim on her)
ANY RAP (no melody, no insturments, what is it they do again), and just as a side me and my roomate were arguing about this, she was trying to tell me that rappers have just as much talent as Hendrix, I was thinking she lost a few marbles.
ANY of the teen pop (britney, christina, justin, bb, n'sync...)
Janet Jackson, shes okay, but well...
Greatful Dead: If I want LSD influenced rock I'll listen to the JA.

Now as a sidenote: I don't think you can overrate the Beatles, everything for the most part Rubber Soul on (excluding a few songs from MMT and the White Album is great stuff).
Led Zepplin I just got into and just bought the DVD, they are awesome and I will forever envy my dad who saw them live several times.
Oh and you don't need to be old to like Barbra Strisand, I love her and usually place her in my top five voices.

I think a few people go very underrated:
Stevie, one of the first rock females to do both group and solo career simultaniously and she usually gets written off as a flake.
Madonna did everything we are seeing now for girls a decade ago, whatever controversy was left for women in rock she pretty much took care of it. Not a great voice, but a great entertainer.
Paul McCartney: Yes Lennon was a genius, but so was Paul, there would be no Beatles w/o both.
Ringo Starr: not the worlds best drummer, but the beatles early music with Pete Best is awful.

I know what overrated means...and I'm just saying I don't agree with the usage of the term...and even after reading your fine statement, I still do not think it's appropriate...which is why I choose not to use it...and that's my opinion...I'm not saying no one else can use the term...that would be silly...as it's just one of my own pet peeves in life...it's something that's bugged me in the past and will continue to until the day I die probably lol...I'm just not into using that term...that's all I'm sayin'

I think a few people go very underrated:
Paul McCartney: Yes Lennon was a genius, but so was Paul, there would be no Beatles w/o both.

I really don't think Paul is underrated at all. If any Beatle was, it's George Harrison.

Here's my list of overrated:
U2
Sting
Dave Matthews Band
Shania Twain

Streisand.....royalty? See these are things we just don't know about down here. Royalty down here is the Prince Phillip and the guy who invented beer. We know who you're talking about if you mention her name, but most would only be able to name a song and tell you that she has a hell of a nose. She isn't an artist we , in general would consider 'respectful'. Not to say that she's disrespectful, she's just no royalty, unlike your Elton John types. We go all out when they come down here, whether they're getting married for publicity or not.

However, her continued success in Australia would seem to contradict your theory, doll. If she were to pack her bags and start touring Australia tomorrow, she'd sell out every show.

The career of Barbara Streisand has been impressive, to say the least. She made her debut in 1963, and has had a US number one album in every decade since then; she's the highest selling female recording artist of all time according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with 29 platinum records; and she's as passionate today as she was fourty years ago.
____________________________________________________

So, apparently, she is still very popular down under

What I completely find unforgivable about Ol' Babs is the way she treats peole off stage. She makes the bellboys walk in backwards with her luggage because she doesn't want "their kind" to even look at her. (She did this at the MGM last time she was here) . The women is a complete NUTCASE. I wish all those "famous" people would remember that they are only where they are because of the fans. When they forget that and get arrogant, as many do, I lose all respect for them. I will never buy anything of Streisand's because of the way she acts. She will never get a penny out of me.

And don't even begin on Sting. I met him in person and his actions were beyond belief. What an arrogant, pathetic, little man.

I've gotten to where I really can't stand Billy Joel at all. I don't know if I'd consider him overrated, though...don't most people think of his music as being kind of schlocky?

I hate it when people compare him to Elton John. Elton is in a completely different league as far as I'm concerned (at least he was until about 1975).

No, she is not someone you openly admit to liking here, unless you were at a sewing circle. I assumed that was the case worldwide, but obviously not. Nikki Webster (you'd have to be Australian to get that) probably sold out at some point too.

That's fine, but that doesn't mean that "most would only be able to name a song and tell you that she has a hell of a nose" and that people don't respect her down there. Her Australian success obviously contradict that assessment. People must like her a helluva lot down there, they just aren't letting on. I guess you could say that in Australia it's unhip to be a Babs fan, just like it's unhip to be a Mac fan in the states. ;)

Again, look at Stevie. She is 55, soon to be 56, and people of all ages attend her solo concerts and the FM concerts = and Stevie is only probably in the top ten or 20 most successful female artists.

When you get the endorsement of Bob Dylan, you're up there in my book. ;)

No, I don't own any of her albums, and that's why I later agreed that we (including myself) need to remember not to base our whole opinion on someone based on their singles. But my point was is that this is exactly what I think is sad with Sheryl...I can see that there is so much more to her than Soak Up The Sun and All I Wanna Do, and it's unfortunate that these are among her most widely known works. I don't have a problem by any means with someone just writing a fun song, but these two are just as God-awful as it gets, IMO.

Hmmmm.... Who is overrated? I would define this as an artist who gets much more accolades than they deserve.

1) Radiohead: Their first two albums were good, but after that- WTF?? Critical darlings who spew out "adventurous" (read- unlistenable) garbage.

2) Sonic Youth: I never got it. I think the critics just say they like because they think that saying that makes them look "cool".

3) David Byrne: The worst of the worst. Everything he does is contrived towards being a "renaissance man". All he ends up with is ****.

4) The Strokes: Two or three chords, subpar musicianship and stanky vocals add up to........... critical adulation!! Their three minutes of fame are way past gone.

5) Bob Dylan: He IS a great songwriter and lyricist. But beyond that- fagettabout it! All those geezer rock snobs out there saying "Dylan is God" just to be part of the cool crowd. It IS acceptable to own up to the fact that Dylan has produced a LOT of stinkers- not just a few, but a LOT.

6) The Beatles: Yeah they changed music. Yeah they wrote great music. Yeah rock and roll would never be the same. But they've been so, so elevated beyond what they really are- it's like they're gods and are infallible. And it's such crap. I really like a lot of their music, but I really think they've become overrated.

Wow, serious hatred indeed...! I'd be curious to know which tracks exactly sound like "****" since just about everything I've heard from Byrne is impeccably crafted, sonically adventurous and extremely well written, particularly his latest album "Grown Backwards". Seems to me that maybe you just don't like the sound of his voice...

As for his contrivance towards "Renaissance Man" status... I really don't know how you come up with that one. Its a term the media seem to attach to him now and again but I don't really see Byrne straining for additional publicity for his art or photography projects, their quality generally speaks for itself. As does the quality of his music and live shows.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I quite like David Byrne! I'm also a great admirer of Radiohead and personally find their first two albums bland and extremely boring when compared with their more recent work. They can only be admired for following their artistic impulses rather than falling back on their tried and tested formula.

I can only think of one band that are currently overrated...Franz Ferdinand - (here in UK and Ireland) some great stuff but WAY too early for them to be getting the critical adoration being heaped on them - The album is so repetitive... Aside from that you have the usual suspects that don't deserve rating at all (Britney, Christine, Eamon... etc etc)!
