'We Built This City' ranks as the worst record ever
Mon Apr 19, 6:42 AM ET
By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY
We Built This City is the single worst single ever constructed, according to Blender's ranking of reeking tunes.
The magazine's list of "The 50 Worst Songs Ever," which hits newsstands Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles and April 27 nationwide, distills the lamest popular rock-era records into one sonic landfill.
Starship's 1985 anthem, the runaway No. 1 stinker, "seems to inspire the most virulent feelings of outrage," editor Craig Marks says. "It purports to be anti-commercial but reeks of '80s corporate-rock commercialism. It's a real reflection of what practically killed rock music in the '80s."
Also sealing the song's fate were Starship's steep fall from grace as the admired Jefferson Airplane and "the sheer dumbness of the lyrics," Marks says.
The May issue, a sequel to the 2003 roundup of history's worst bands, coincides with a Blender/VH1 special, The 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever, which airs May 12.
Harvesting clunkers that range from The Doors' The End to Aqua's Barbie Girl entailed more digging than expected.
Each dud had to be a hit to make the hit list. Though Right Said Fred's I'm Too Sexy got in, such novelties as Macarena and Who Let the Dogs Out, which by design are cheesy, were nixed. The jury also whittled down the bulk of "rotten, excruciatingly bad low-hanging fruit from the '70s," Marks says.
Blender had no qualms about riding herd on sacred cows, inducting The Beatles' Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, R.E.M (news - web sites).'s Shiny Happy People and John Mayer (news)'s Your Body Is a Wonderland. The entry most likely to peeve fans is Simon & Garfunkel's The Sounds of Silence.
"It's the freshman-poetry meaningfulness that got our goat," Marks says. "With self-important lyrics like, 'Hear my words that I might teach you,' it's almost a parody of pretentious '60s folk-rock.
"If Frasier Crane wrote a song, this would be it."
To accommodate coming horrors, the list can't be considered definitive. Noting that Clay Aiken's Invisible landed at No. 11, Marks predicts that "as soon as the American Idol season is finished, there will be a new entry."

I hate the song, but I'm sure there are worse.
I'm glad that Your Body Is A Wonderland song made it. I think it's terrible and overrated.

John Mayer is annoying and a total whiner. I don't understand what the big rage over him is. His voice isn't anything stellar...his songs are mediocre at best. Am I missing something?

I agree that his voice is weak.

To me, he's like any other male songwriter with a guitar. There's nothing that makes him a standout.

A lot of the girls in my school are in love with John Mayer. They also think his music is so profound and deep, and basically perfect. I haven't said anything to them yet about exploring better musicians (I can think of five off the top of my head ;) ) or about how sucky he is, and I probably won't, but I always want to just throw a FM CD at their heads or something  Always glad when he makes a degrading list

I don't get John Mayer either. He opened up for Stevie at the Concert for Kids show and I thought he was just so boring. I can't believe now he is headlining big outdoor venues.

I always thought Mayer looked like a heroin junkie. The dark eyes, man.
His voice is as soothing as a week of yellow **** storms. Very whiny and whispery. Bleh.

I can clearly remember when my Mother & myself drove to Colorado (From Oklahoma...A short 8 hour trip) for vacation back in 1985 and every rock/pop radio station in Kansas were playing this steaming piece of pop crafted crap.
We kept track of how many times it was played during a day's drive and we were up to at least thirty air plays.

I like John Mayer. My fave song is Neon, followed by Daughters. I agree, his voice is nothing special, but I like his jazzy guitar playing.

5 million + people like John Mayer, actually...
... but not me :-) He's a very nice guy, though. I wish him nothing but success. I think he's the only person I've seen in a long while who could possibly be a commercially successful mainstream, adult, album-oriented artist.
As for We Built This City being the worst song ever... I LOVE that they picked that damn song!!! Reason #437 why I actually, surprisingly LIKE Blender!!

Actually I like "We Built this City" it's one of those songs from childhood, and its bouncy.
I also like the Doors The End, and The Sounds of Silence.
I don't like John Meyer, and I despise the song "Your Bodys a Wonderland."
However most of the songs I would place on this list wouldn't qualify since they were not hits to begin with (Family Man, Revolution 9 (the one on the white album), Welcome to the Room...Sara, (a good portion of Madonnas Erotica Album), etc.

Aww. I like John Mayer. I usually hate his kind of music, but I do like a lot of his songs. He kind of reminds me of Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20. I have a thing for dark-haired guys with big eyes. I do agree with everyone, though. Your Body is a Wonderland just flat-out sucks. I first heard it on some indie radio station. Made me want to throw something at the radio. Heh.

I'm all for nice guys finishing first, but you just know he'd be Joe Schmo average with those girls if he went to your high school and were not famous.

The day after he won that award he was all over the radio all of a sudden.
