Polls: Rice Testimony Changed Few Minds
By The Associated Press
Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) apparently didn't change many minds with her Thursday appearance before the commission investigating the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Three-fourths in a CBS News poll Thursday night said they think those in the Bush administration are either hiding something (66 percent), or lying (10 percent), about what they knew before the terrorist attacks in September 2001. That was essentially unchanged from a CBS poll taken last week.
More than half, 56 percent, in a CBS News poll said they saw or heard part of the testimony of Rice, national security adviser to President Bush (news - web sites). The viewers who tuned in included a roughly equal share of Democrats and Republicans.
Rice appeared before the commission Thursday to answer questions about the Bush administration's efforts to fight terrorism.
She may have helped her own public image.
Two-thirds of those who watched, 64 percent, said they have a favorable impression of Rice — slightly higher than her overall favorable rating among all those polled and higher than the 50 percent who viewed her favorably in a March Gallup poll.
And two-thirds, 68 percent, said the Bush administration was not paying enough attention to terrorism before the attacks — also about the same as last week.
The poll of 471 adults was taken Thursday night and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
