GLASSPORT, Pa. — A church trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.

People who attended Saturday's performance at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny," and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children.

"He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped," Salzmann said.

Patty Bickerton, the youth minister at Glassport Assembly of God (search), said the performance wasn't meant to be offensive. Bickerton portrayed the Easter rabbit and said she tried to act with a tone of irreverence.

"The program was for all ages, not just the kids. We wanted to convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ," Bickerton said.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"It was very disturbing," Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting."

How coluld this performance not be offensive? The Easter Bunny is a symbol to children. Did they think it wouldn't upset them? these people are nuts.

I was ashamed to see that this happened in a Pittsburgh suburb....

What are people thinking?

I find it HIGHLY amusing. How crazy does one have to be to want to demonstrate the suffering of Jesus by whipping an easter bunny?!?!?

By the way, did anyone watch Peter Jennings' 'Jesus And Paul' news documentary the other night?
VERY interesting viewing... and something everyone should see, in my opinion.

I taped & watched it. I had a few problems with it, most of them tied to Peter's rather obvious bias.

I suppose that the pastor or whoever came up with this hare-brained scheme is now regretting putting all his creative eggs in that particular basket and is already whipping up another passionate scheme to prop up flailing church attendence numbers. ;)

The sooner someone has the guts to separate Christian and Pagan festivals the better. This whole Christmas v Santa Claus, Easter v Ressurection fudge is because someone tried to graft Christianity on top of Pagan festivals to widen its appeal.

Celebrate Christ's birth sometime else in the year (we can make a better guess than December 25th!), and remove the word Easter ( pagan origins) and call it Ressurection Sunday.

What I'm celebrating this weekend has nothing to do with fluffy bunnies - which are best left to a celebration of spring.

Well according to the media over here, Christianity has little to offer the world, because the people who follow that way of life are amongst the seriously uncool.

Mega rich actress spending fortune on new house, new personal trainer, new boyfriend and designer clothes is epitomy of style and someone worth half a newspaper's coverage.

Mega rich pop star who tithes and spends their free time in a soup kitchen in south London dishing up meals overnight to the homeless is somehow a bit weird and written about in a condescending manner.

AS soneone once said... what's the world coming to...

I know. I swear I have wanted to add this to the bottom of the last 20 posts I've made, but didn't want to sound like a broken record. Maybe I'll make it my sig and be done with it. ;)

And yet I don't believe that the world doesn't really get particularly better or worse through the ages, so maybe thinking 'WTWCT' at every turn is just a part of growing up. Shedding off idealism etc. :(

But what you've just mentioned about the press deserves a 'Murrow is turning over in his grave' lament, too, for good measure.

what next? Making Santa into a pinata? Harpooning a cupid? Lynching a leprechaun? Kicking Jerry Lewis outta an airplane w/out a parachute on Labor Day? (Come to think of it, that's not actually a bad idea)

Man, these religious folk are freakin' out badly to pick on a poor defenseless wabbit ("Be verwy, verwy quiet...We beating a wabbit...Huhuhuhuhuhuh"...or as I say "Be verwy, verwy quiet...We huntin' WMD...Huhuhuhuhuhuh").

It's bad enuff to beat a wabbit but at least they're nowhere as anal as the numbnuts in this hellhole town who closed public school today in honor of Easter (Easter as a school holiday? S--t, I never got as many days off from school as these wimpy assed youth of today do.)

Schools in the UK get 2 weeks holiday over Easter, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are Public Holidays. We don't however get as long as the US schools in summer, so, overall it evens out over the course of 12 months.

I never had a long summer vacation from school, My hometown's public (Muskogee, OK) school's ended in Mid June and started back up at the beginning of August...Not alot of time to run your own business during the vacation.

I remember seeing a special were it explained it took the wisemen several months to cross the deserts to arrive to see the infant Jesus, And that the date Dec.25th is supposedly is the day the 3 wisemen (Manny, Moe & Jack  ) arrived in Bethlehem.
