My apartment is high up and overlooks the pool & a highway (NOT I-10, thank goodness), several buildings, and trees. It faces SW, so I get great sunsets and lots of sunshine, but I end up paying more on air conditioning.

What do you see when you look out?

Our neighbors house across the street...trees....planes heading to the airport

My apartment is on the second story. My bedroom window overlooks grass and a creek. There are often ducks, deer, and other birds around. The living room window overlooks the parking lot. Fortunately we are near the freeway and the main road but not too close so it's fairly quiet.

Well, I can see my neighbors houses, including one neighbor whose garage door apparently doesn't work as it is open ALL THE TIME...and she basically lives in there...talks on the phone *loudly* etc....

And farther off I have a view of the Organ Mountains...which I don't live too far from....it's a nice little mountain range that gives our city something lovely to look at :)

At the moment I'm also seeing an obsene amount of weeds...like I'm thinking the neighbors are going to start complaining and calling codes enforcement on me lol...BUT I did start pulling them today....so hopefully in a few days...no more weeds

The grass & creek sound nice, but doesn't the parking lot get noisey? I am not a fan of noise.

By car it's about 18 minutes. However, if you go to the edge of my town to the waterfront, it's not that far down the river...you can see them coming in and landing.

Never got the fascination with watching planes.
When they opened the new airport in Austin a few years ago, it became a popular date spot for a time.

I can do better than describe my view -- I can show you!

The attached pic is looking out one of my bedroom windows, where my two lovebirds (Zorro and Dixie) love to sit and watch the neighborhood birds eat from the birdfeeder that I built with my own two hands. This is a second floor window facing east. Thankfully the huge cedar trees you can see usually block the sun as it rises, but I do get a few mornings in the spring and fall of full-on get-yer-ass-outta-bed direct sunlight. The trees are also usually full of birds (sparrows, finches, doves, starlings, grackles, cardinals and the occasional bluejay) waiting to get a bite at the feeder.

There is one other window to the right of this one that looks across the neighbor's roof, with a clear view of the sky. It's great to sit and watch the clouds roll by, and just about every month I get to see the full moon rise perfectly in the windowframe.

P.S. - I also have a huge white umbrella-crested cockatoo named Rocky, but I don't know how to (or if you can) post 2 pics at once. If you wanna see him too, let me know.

Great thread Jake! I really enjoyed reading everyone's responses. (Except for the thong ones ... ewwww!)

Nice view. I like trees.
Have you always had such a thing for birds?

No, my fascination with birds started when I lived in with a friend in her house in South Austin. She had a great front yard with lots of native plants that attracted hummingbirds and swarms of butterflies. But for some strange reason, not too many birds. I bought some wild bird seed from a nursery one day, set it out, and my view of the world was forever altered.

When I think about it, it seems birds are the only truly free land animals left on earth. All the others have been compartmentalized. Birds can go anywhere they want at any time.

All of my pet birds have been adopted from people who weren't able to keep them. They all have their wings and are free to fly throughout my 3-room little apartment when I let them out for playtime. Yes, it can get a little messy at times, but "strategically placed newspaper" and the new "It-pulls-the-dirt-to-the-bottom" Pine-Sol work wonders. And I don't mind a bit. There's just something about sitting reading a book and having a lovebird whizz by my head that is priceless to me. Or, having a cockatoo sitting on my shoulder nuzzling his head in my neck as I type this message...

By the way, here's Rocky:

And, on my way home after work, I'll be driving on the Long Beach Grand Prix race course for about a mile.

The view out of my second-floor home office is my own front yard and the neighbor's side yard & driveway. There's a big ole' pine tree in my front yard and I get to see squirrels chase each other up and down the tree, see my neighbors and their dogs walking down the street, and I get a really nice view of the azaleas and the dogwoods blooming this time of year.

It can be REALLY noisy at times- depending on which act is playing at the House of Blues. Sometimes the crowds can get very rowdy. But after 10 years of living here, I'm used to it. I went camping last year in the Sequoias and it was so quiet, I couldn't fall asleep.

I wouldn't trade living in the city for anything. Unless I become a millionaire and can afford a HUGE mansion in beautiful New England, or something like that- Europe, maybe.

Well, he's neither really. His coat is predominantly red and fawn with hints of blue(gray) and black. He has a black snout and ears. His hindquarters and the underside of his tail are cream. Weird, I know, but he's one beautiful dog. "Bear" is celebrating his 13th birthday later this month! :)

All of my pet birds have been adopted from people who weren't able to keep them. They all have their wings and are free to fly throughout my 3-room little apartment when I let them out for playtime.
By the way, here's Rocky:

Bird fanatic here too.

Rocky is cute ! So are the lovebirds ( I had one for 10 years, but she recently passed away :( ).

I have a 30 year old umbrella cockatoo named Wilbur(a rescue), plus a parrotlet. I keep the wings clipped so they won't crash into a window or accidentally get out and fly away. I'd never forgive myself.

They enjoy a view of downtown LA, and all the trees, birds, deer, skunks, raccoons, and wildness on my property. No houses though, we can only see nature or the downtown skyline.

Average rent for a one bedroom in my neighborhood is about $1750 a month. If you want to BUY a condo- one bedrooms start at about $350,000 / two bedrooms are about $500,000.

When I bought my 1600 sq ft condo (in a bldg built in 1961), my two bedroom went for $187,000. It's worth a lot more now, thank gawd.

When I first moved into my current place and installed the perches and cafe curtains on the windows, all three birds did a LOT of window-crashing, but they figured it out quickly and thankfully were never hurt. The minute I let them out of their cages now, they fly immediately to their favorite window to see what excitement is going on on the bird feeders, etc. outside. They love it.

As for the wing-clip issue, I totally understand your feelings. However, all three birds came to me clipped and pretty tame, but they were depressed (in a sense) and not very playful. I made a conscious decision to let them have their wings and what little freedom I could give them. Everyone told me that they would immediately revert to being wild and that the cockatoo, especially, would become aggressive. The thinking being, "Once they have their wings, they don't need you anymore." To me, that just sounded like slavery. I let them re-grow their wings, installed the afore-mentioned perches and a few other play areas, and the change in their mood, their physical condition, their feather coloring, and their personalities has been drastic. I let them out, they fly around chirping their heads off, and then they fly over to me and practically demand for me to pet them. I think they have become more loving for the change, not the opposite like everyone said.

As for the escaping the house issue, I'm lucky in that if they ever got out of my main area, they would fly into a great room area of the house I live in. (The setup is a duplex of sorts, no direct outside access.) But if I leave this place and have to move into a more conventional apartment, I'll just be very very careful. The extra work on my part is fine with me if it makes them happier.

Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you what to do or that you're wrong or anything. Just to relay a positive message about what I feel to be a misconception among the bird-loving community. ;)

And something else interesting (and I can't believe I'm typing this), but it's currently mating season, and I've seen all three of my birds ... um ... masturbating. Last spring they were still in wing-growing phase, so I guess they were preoccupied. But this spring -- sheesh! I hope they're not picking up my bad habits.

Sorry to hear that! I lost a 14 year-old female lovebird about 2 years ago, which is how I wound up with the 2 I have now. (I was very sad, and couldn't say no to adopting either one.) Unfortunately, they're different species, so they'll never become a bonded pair and be true LOVEbirds, but they get along OK, until I put millet seed treats out and then the phrase "the feathers fly" takes on new meaning.

Whatever works ! My house has so many doors, and is damned near all windows, so the idea freaks me out. The birds are all very happy.

My late great lovebird masturbated all the time. She was so focused and had no shame about it at all. It was hysterical. She only laid eggs once in a while, in spite of it. The other birds never have. She was a very unique little bird. The house is certainly not the same without her.

They are a specific breed of parrot that includes many types (Fischer's, Black Masked, Peach Faced, etc.). The pictures posted are a good representation. They are one the smallest parrots kept in captivity, and contrary to their name, many aren't that lovable. They can be a little nippy and tempermental. BUT, when in a breeding pair, they tend to be very closely bonded, snuggle with each other all the time, and can very possessive and aggressive towards other people or birds. Put your hand in a bonded pair's cage and watch out. This is why my lovebird was single. She bonded (after years of work) to me. Lovebirds frequently need to be handled every day in order to keep them tame. Mine was an exception, but as I said, only after years of patience. Worth every second. She was an absolute joy to have around, and had more personality than many people I have known for years.

Can you live on broccoli, millet, bread, carrots, and bird pellets ? The bonus is that there is a lot of Stevie music around. My Lovebird actually was completely nuts for Stevie, Tom Petty, Joni, Dolly, The Eagles, and Emmylou Harris. A nasal voice or jangly guitars would have her singing along all day.
