View Full Version : Stupid stuff you've heard people say about FM

Okay...we've all had those experiences where you've heard someone say something about FM that just made you wince. I thought it would be fun to share these distressing experiences.

At a Mac show last year, this 50-ish, rich, drunk lady repeatedly told me all about how she had REALLY enjoyed Stevie's show the previous year with Cyndi Lauper (she was confusing Stevie with Cher, just in case you don't know).

When I was in line for tickets a couple weeks ago, there were two girls and a guy tagging along with them in line behind me. One of the girls says, "I asked my mom if she wanted to go to the concert and she said, 'Not unless Christine McVie is gonna be up there on keyboards.'" The guy goes, "Keyboards ? Who cares about the keyboard player?! Anybody can play keyboards !" Now, I can kinda forgive him, because he clearly was not a Mac fan, but why did the other two supposed fans not retort?! They just giggled.:distress: I kept my mouth shut only because I was first in line and I didn't want to piss them off and risk them demanding a lottery. :)

I know a lot of people who don't understand that there is Stevie solo and Stevie FM. Any song with Stevie singing, it's just Stevie.

Also, when I play a FM album with a non-fan around, he or she will say, "I didn't know they sang THAT."

Hey, was that the lady at the Portland show? I remember her! I would have thought she knew her stuff since she traveled clear across the country. LOL!

Actually I have a dumb comment from someone. I went to lunch with a guy friend the other day and we were talking about FM. I told him they were going on tour again this summer, but Christine wasn't in the band anymore. He said, "oh did she quit because of her ex-husband?" He said it with his eyebrows raised like there was something going on between them still and they couldn't handle playing together.

Uh, little did he know that happened about 25 years ago. I didn't even try to explain. It would have taken too much energy.

"Aren't they old?"

"Aren't they dead?"

"I like that song, Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining!!!!"

"Lindsey, who's she?"

I've had several people over the years, when I'm talking about FM, say,
"Oh, I like him" (thinking FM is a man).

I get a lot of the "Lindsey, which one is she??" and "It's funny that Stevie is a boy's name and Lindsey is a girl's name..."

BUT the most common thing I hear actually has to do with Stevie..and it's the ever-popular witch reference..

It's like the "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds is about LSD..." thing...I just roll my eyes and move on...I just let people think whatever they wanna think...

I've stopped arguing or even explaining things to people who say these things...it's not worth the effort lol....

Well I am younger then the avergae fan, so whenever I say I like Stevie Nicks at school everyone says, "Who's he?" It is insane!

Also, when me and my Dad went to their concert this summer everyone assumed I was just tagging along, when really it was my birthday present and I was bringing my dad. So, I get pissed off when people think I am too young to like Fleetwood Mac.

Also, a substitute teacher at my school saw my wearing a Mac shirt and said "Rumours was pretty good, but then they came out with Tusk!"

Also, at the bookstore one day I was wearing a FM shirt and the lady at the counter said something like "I don't like them anymore because that other girl left!" Not only did she insult Christine by not knowing her name, but she insulted the band by not giving them a chance!

Let's see... someone thought it was, and I quote, "gross" to like Stevie Nicks because she is in her 50s.

That about sums it up!

When people (and I use the term loosely!~ha!) say:

that they're easy listening----WTF?!?!?

that they don't rock--- (see above comment)

"Eagles, Fleetwood Mac,...same difference"

"Stevie sounds like she gargled with glass"

condescendingly: "I just don't....get into them, sorry."

Yep, I get that too. "But you are too young to be listening to them."

Excuse me?

Why is there an age limit to listen to kick a$$ music?

LOL I should say to them, "Wow, you're too old to be that stupid."

My friend who likes to believe she's intelligent once said:
"Er yes, in the 1970's Stevie was ostrasized from the USA for being a witch"

Eh?

Also,
"I didn't know they sang THAT."

and

"Aren't they dead?"

Another annoying comment made by the friend I posted about above: He was talking about how he likes Stevie and I said something like yeah, and Lindsey is just an amazing guitar player. And he goes, "what? He's like 60!" I said, no he's not, he's like 50 (which I know is not true, but his real age is closer to 50 than 60!) Then he went on saying how is favorite band (Widespread Panic) the guitarist is only 45. So his point being, I guess, the older you are the less talented guitarist you are???? WTF, seems it should be the other way around. Anyway, that was another comment that made no sense and I didn't even waste my time arguing about.

Oh yeah, my sister once said, about Stevie's voice, "Is that her real voice????"

I ALWAYS get the "Who's HE?!" and "Who's SHE?!" comments from people about Stevie and Lindsey. People also assume that I'm mainly a Stevie Nicks fan if I say that I'm a FM fan. And I am a Stevie fan, but she's not my *favorite* member of FM. So when I say "Well, no, I'm not mainly a Stevie fan" people tend to say "Then you like the other chick?" and I say "Yeah... but I like the OTHER chick. Lindsey Buckingham. You know who she is." in a sarcastic tone, and the pathetic thing is, people believe me when I refer to Lindsey as a girl.

Another thing that I find funny is how many people confuse Stevie with other singers. About a week ago, I stopped into this memorabelia shop and I asked if they had any FM stuff. Well, of course they didn't. But anyway, they guy working at the shop said to me, "Yeah, Pat Benatar was their lead singer, right? Wasn't she in Jefferson Airplane, too?" And I was all "Erm... No. Pat Benatar was never in Fleetwood Mac, and Grace Slick was the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane." And it just gets weirder. I was wearing a very Stevie-esque skirt, and the guy said to me "Oh yeah, now I remember. Their lead singer wore all that sexy black stuff" and he WINKED at me. Ew. So, in like, ten minutes, I heard someone confuse Stevie Nicks with Pat Benatar AND Grace Slick, and had a scary old guy make a pass at me. This? is sad. And disturbing.

Oh, and my mother told me that one of her co-workers overheard her talking about going to see FM this summer, and said to her "So, you're going to see Fleetwood Mac? Is it really worth it? I heard Stevie Nicks wasn't in the band anymore." And my mom replied, "No, Christine McVie isn't in the band anymore." and the co-worker just kept going on about how Stevie left the band, etc. lol.

I'm sure that I'll come up with MANY more...

"I heard they have a new song."
"Well, actually they have a new album, and they're on tour."
"Really? Well, it can't be that good."

"Landslide...that's such a wonderful song by the Dixie Chicks"
"Well, actually that was an FM song. Stevie Nicks wrote it."
"Who's he?"

I've also had the "Aren't they dead?" question.

And I have a friend who gets annoys when guys have girl's names and girls have guy's names. So FM bugs her. Hehe.

I almost fainted.:distress:

I hate that too!! LOL

My old boss used to say to me
"isn't she dead yet" just to irritate me!

I was more annoyed there new album wasn't advertised over in Aus, most people didn't even know they were touring!

I also constantly get the "your to young to know who they are" comments (im 22), or the looks of people thinking it is daggy, i have certainly got that a lot in my past, whereas now i dont let it get to that and i think its because if the way in which i say it now is proudly therefore they have sort of gathered i would jump down their throat (sometimes necessary) if they give me that look! .....i think we all know the look! ;)

I get that the most (I'm 22 as well). I actually had some people behind me at my first FM show who were like "You're too young to know anything about this band!" They proceeded to sit down during the entire show. They even had no idea that they had a new album.

Amateurs.

My 2nd cousin, who was like fourty, thought it was strange that I was wearing a FM shirt, since I was like 15 at the time. So, he thought he was real smart asking me a trivia question, which I guess he thought would be a challenge for me.

"So, what song did Santana cover by FM?"

"Gee let me think about that. Black Magic Woman."

"Wow, you really know your stuff"

Meanwhile I am rolling my eyes!

Ah, this thread brings to mind a conversation I once had with a student-teacher in my high school fine-arts class.

It was rather common knowledge that I was a Fleetwood Mac fan, though I'm not sure how he found out. Anyway, he approached me one afternoon to tell me how much he loved Fleetwood Mac... which, of course, I was really impressed by.
And then he told me that his favorite Mac album was 'Mystery To Me'... which impressed me even more, because I was thinking, "wow, this guy really knows his Mac!"

And THEN... he added that it's such a great album because it was the first to feature Stevie Nicks.
I politely corrected him, and told him that actually Stevie didn't join until two albums later, at the same time as Lindsey Buckingham.
And he said, "No, she's on 'Mystery To Me' too... it was her first album with them BEFORE Lindsey joined."

I asked him if perhaps he was confusing Stevie for Christine McVie (of course, he'd have still been wrong about that "first album" factoid, but it was a possibility he was confusing the two Mac ladies), and he assured me that he definitely meant Stevie Nicks, and he proceeded to name some of Stevie's most famous songs (all of which he had correct).

Then he added, "I'll bring my vinyl copy of 'Mystery To Me' with me tomorrow, and prove it to you!"

Needless to say, he didn't bring his copy of 'Mystery To Me' the next day, and he never mentioned the conversation again!

I also have a very funny story about the photographer who took my senior picture, INSISTING that he always loved Grace Slick in Fleetwood Mac.
But I'll let Josh tell that story... since he had the same photographer twelve years later, and encountered the same comments!

Who's the girl? Lindsey?

Who's the boy? Stevie?

The best is the perennial Fleetwood Who? I get from clerks in record stores.....

My all-time favorite:

Me: "I'm going to see Fleetwood Mac this spring"

Response: "I love "the one winger!"

Me: "Huh?"

Response: "You know, it's one of their songs. It goes (sung in some sort of tune that was supposed to resemble EO17) 'just like the one winger'."

Me: (Laughing uncontrollably) That's one of Stevie's solo songs, and it's called-"

Response: "I thought the chick sang it?"

There were so many errors:
1) "The One Winger?" Are you f-ing kidding me?
2) "it's one of their songs" No, it's not.
3) SINGING "just like the one winger" instead of "just like the white winged dove"....this was just a riot. How I managed to get my next statement out without dying in a fit of laughter is beyond me...
4) "the chick" Well, there's two chicks nimrod.
5) "I thought the chick sang it" Didn't I just say "one of Stevie's" songs???

GRRRR...I hate stupidity.

I thought mine was pretty good, but whoever had the Pat Benatar/Grace Slick confusion all within ten minutes...well I think that one takes the cake.

I enjoy some of the song credits:
Crimson and Clover
Bette Davis Eyes
______________________________________________
And another annoyance:

*Black Magic Woman* comes on the radio on the way to Xmas shopping
Me: "I wish they'd play the Fleetwood Mac version of this maybe just one freaking time"
Ex-GF: "This is Santana, Fleetwood Mac never did this song"
Me: "Uh, yeah they did. Peter Green wrote it."
Ex-GF: "Who? Is that the drummer guy?"

Aren't they related?

Yeah, I think they're brothers.

Walking out of the Pittsburgh show last year I was right behind this 20-something girl on a cell phone talking to one of her friends --

"Oh they were ok, but they just stood there and sang to each other--no dancing or stage show like Madonna."

Maybe Stevie needs to pull out that pointy bra thing like Madonna wears. :]
