Thanks to Jannie from The Legacy (http://fmlegacy.com) for posting this exciting, long-awaited news.

<hr>
Music Week / 03.04.04 / Page 6

One-time Fleetwood Mac songwriter and vocalist Christine McVie’s first solo outing in two decades is to mark the first link-up between Adventure Records and Sanctuary since their chart topping Christmas triumph with Mad World.

Following the UK platinum-selling success of the Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules single, the two companies are joining forces again for the release on June 7 of McVie’s Meantime.

The title, the first solo album since McVie’s self-titled release, also reunites McVie with Adventure Records co-founder Paul Conroy, who worked with her on Fleetwood Mac releases while he was an executive at Warner Music and landed this new release following an approach by her manager and music publisher Martin Wyatt. “He brought it to me and I just loved it,” says Conroy.

Conroy then decided to speak to Sanctuary about co-handling the album due to its track record of working with mature artists such as Steve Winwood and Todd Rundgren.

Adventure has gone with Sanctuary for the world outside the US and Canada, while teaming up with Koch in North America.

Separately, McVie and Wyatt have overseen the launch of a new publishing operation, which debuts with the new album.

This is awesome news - yet another FM release in the same half of the year as the SYW Concert DVD and the remasters!

PS - I like the (intentionally?) equivocal title. Maybe the early rumour that the new songs were more edgy, more 'angry' (not the actual terms used but the gist) will be true.

Oh, and didn't I hear that they're reissuing her solo album from 1969? If so, that's two Christine events to look forward to this year.

Thanks for posting that!

I hope it's angry and edgy, that'll bring some new life to her impressive body of work. It's a great title- CM-FM 1-0 :D

I'm sure it will be edgier, Because I very much doubt Sanctuary records will release an album (Either in conjunction with another label or on their own) that would be considered "safe".

This is fantastic news!!! I first heard about it on the Legacy board earlier this morning. I can't wait. That's 70 days to go. And, yes her 1969 solo album will also be re-released on CD later this year, although I'm sure she's not too thrilled about that if she knows about it.

And, it's always amusing to hear Buckingham/Nicks fans remark about how old she is. It's not like everyone else in Fleetwood Mac is THAT much younger than Christine.

That certainly used to be the case, but not so much anymore... we'll see how Matthew Knowles' (Beyonce's EVIL daddy) joining the label group is going to effect at least the edginess of their urban roster.

What I'm more interested in is the Carl Stubner angle. Stubner (Mick's agent) is one of the principals of Sanctuary.

The fact that it'll be distributed by Koch in the U.S. isn't great... I'm not a fan. It's unfortunate Sanctuary isn't taking it here.

You may be right...

I'm not a fan of Koch's either. I wonder why they (Sanctuary) won't use BMG Distribution as they have in the past with releases?

(update-The edginess I was referring to is with artists under the Sanctuary label, such as Queensryche, Not the whole Sanctuary Records Group...My bad.)

I was thinking about that too. If Chris tours in support of this record, we will know that the "no touring" reason they gave for her leaving is bogus.

And frankly, they can keep this onslaught of new products coming for the next several years, and I won't be satiated (new albums, more reissues, new & archival material DVDs... I want it all).
I became a fan in the mid-'80s when the Mac's output was slowing considerably, so this is the first time I'm experiencing what it must have been like to have been following the band in the '70s.
In fact, I'd wager that it's the first time that about 85% of us are experiencing this!

But touring for herself is different than touring with FM. With, FM it's such a circus event, whereas a solo tour could be a much more scaled down event. Additionally, in a solo tour, Christine does the songs she wants....in FM, she has to participate in everyone else's songs (and her oldies) that she is probably so sick of doing.

From what I understand, the shows themselves weren't so bad. Christine just really hated all the travelling and hotel rooms and being away from her family. I seriously doubt that she'll tour. In any event, this is fantastic news! This has nicely balanced the sad article I just read over in the Peter Green section.

You European people can get on a plane and get anywhere around Europe so easily! It's so hard for us Americans:( Like my friend lives in KENT and I am meeting him in Amsterdam April 16th. My flight is like 8 hours and $680. He likes takes an hour minute flight for like 30 pounds or something. NOT fair! LOL!

London is the hot spot right now for everything ABBA the beginning of April, but tickets NOW to London are about $1500. Insanity!

If she would "tour" this summer, there would be no way for me :( I don't think she'd tour though...

Maybe a talk show show or two? I have heard of Graham Norton, I know Gillian Anderson was on that show ( didn't see it though but she lives in London and does all those shows ) but anything like that would be cool because our England friends would make sure we Americans could see it:):) Right...??

Yippee!

What kind of publicity do you think the new record will get? If Christine just stays at home, then no one will no about it. So, maybe she is coming back to the USA for a few months to do the talk shows and a short tour? I don't know, but they need to do something for people to realize she has a new album. And I hope it is released in the USA because it wouldn't make sense if it wasn't.

Speaking of which, is there any chance for a hit single? I think if they promote it right, she could have a hit. I mean we are talking about the woman who wrote Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, Little Lies, and Hold Me. She has the "hit single" secret and if this company plays there cards right and promotes it, maybe Christine could be the female Sting! A mature artist who caters to a young hip audience!

And wouldn't it be funny if Christine did have a hit song and her record sold more then Say You Will? ;)

I'm so excited!

Here is the comment about Christine's songs being rockier:

April 21, 2000: From the April George Hawkins Q&A: "I haven't seen Chris for over a year. I also hadn't spoken with her in nearly that long; until last night, ironically! She called me from England. She has been there for some time, and has been living the life of a "grand English matron", as she put it, "piddling around the garden in my sun hat and Wellies" (Wellies are Wellington rubber, over the calf-style gardening and mud boots). I tried to remember and ask some of the questions I've received about her, but the moment was so personal and intimate, I couldn't bring myself to conduct an interview. Although I will pass on what she said that is relevant to all of us: She lives in the country, and has a local pub. She has good "sort of salt of the earth" friends and pubmates. She doesn't hang with the English Rock royalty. She pursues her two modest passions, cooking and gardening, reads, and tends to her dogs (one of which is named George). Christine has a music room on her property and described the songs she's been writing as "tougher and not as soft as in the past". "More brash and less careful". Interesting, huh? She sounded healthy and happy and didn't commit one way or the other about doing another record."

I have my doubts about how much press Christine may do for this album. I could be very wrong, it's just that all the news we've heard so far hasn't exactly been well-publicized outside of Mac circles, and none of the information about this has come from Christine personally at all.

I really hope she does some press. I'd like to hear how she's doing and what's on her mind about music these days.

Well, just to give you an example. Steve Winwood, who has mainly been a solo artist for the last 20 years, put out "About Time" and it sold to the small following. But realisitically, he used to sell #1 albums and tons of hits.

Now that he is writing better music, it's not selling as well. The markets and industry have certainly changed for artists like these. Even Phil Collins struggles a bit more (sales-wise) with his solo efforts. Publicity or no publicity. Don't look for a Britney McVie, look for more of a Christine McWinwood. ;)

I think Lindsey would be very happy for his friend, if her album is a huge success.

And what people seem to forget is that Christine didn't leave Fleetwood Mac under bad circumstances... she left because she no longer wished to spend most of her life on tour.
She never ruled out recording again. In fact, when she first retired from touring in the early '90s, she was already talking about doing another solo album at some point down the road.

Well, her desire has finally come to fruition. :)

Which I wouldn't mind at all. He may be doing less commercial albums but he's doing fantastic tours at small venues. I saw him last summer and there were no more than 3 or 4,000 people there but it was AMAZING. Lots of Traffic songs which made me happy.

I doubt Christine will do any gigs or much press but even one interview would make me happy. Heck, I'm happy enough that this album is actually going to come out.

Which is what I don't understand. She recorded for the "Time" album, but didn't go out on the road. She could've easily recorded for SYW and not have released one of her songs as a single. :) Maybe she was already in the beginning phas eof working on her album when the Mac decided to do an album. Who knows. All I can say is I'm glad she's still making music and I can't wait for this album! Especially if it's more in the vein of her edgier stuff like "Isn't It Midnight" and "Behind the Mask" (one of her BEST songs).

Well, I guess I'm not even sure that happened. That was one story that got around, but in direct response to a question about her supposedly offering to be on the album, Mick indicated that that never actually happened.

In November of 2001, Mick said the following to the BBC:

Host: Okay Trish(?) from the U.S. says, there was some talk of Christine wanting to participate in the recording of the album, but not the tour. Did you guys take her up on the offer?

Mick: Uh, she didn't actually make the offer. But, um, what happened is...she has a vague desire to maybe do that. But I think, in truth, what may well happen is she may participate with some of her songwriting. It's a possibility. In fact, I'm going to go to dinner with her tonight. I think she is a little frightened of getting sucked back into the whole...she doesn't like traveling anymore so..maybe some writing, I think. And maybe a tiny bit of vocalizing.

Host: Cause we did get a lot of questions from people wanting to know what Christine is doing and how is she?

Mick: Sure. She's very well. She lives in Canterbury. And she is...luckily she's decided to start doing some songwriting, which I think is good for her. But she's living a very private life and…sort of…happy to be not part of show business, unlike the rest of us. [laughs]

'You bleached-blonde bitch! Get off of me and write about your velvet fountains, I said I'm not going and that's final!'

If they had an affair which I highly doubt then I would say it was around the Mirage era as they were like two peas in a pod~~~always had something good to say about one another, rehearsing together, dueting on Hold Me and some of the playful looks they exchange in the Mirage concert video are so endearing and sweet.

euh, what I've heard from LB was not at all that negative, he actually came across quite understanding. Something about her not being so willing to tour, and him knowing very well what that feels like.

Johnny Stew

Christine did an online interview in 1995, to promote 'Time,' and she seemed less than enthusiastic about Dave Mason being in the band. She didn't really mention Bekka Bramlett at all.
So I've wondered if perhaps the difference between recording but not touring, has something to do with her personal feelings in regards to the members of the band.

Let's see if I can explain this... it's highly probable that Christine feels far more of a bond with Stevie & Lindsey, than she would with Bekka, Billy & Dave.
I'm not sure how much time she even really spent with Bekka and Dave.
So maybe it was easy for her to just contribute songs to 'Time,' and not feel any pull to tour with the band.

But, given her bond with Stevie & Lindsey, maybe it causes the scenario to be a lot more difficult... because she IS emotionally invested in it.
So whereas in 1994/95 it might have been VERY easy for her to say "no thanks" to an offer to tour, this time around she may have feared that she'd allow herself to get talked into it, because of a love for her bandmates.
So it had to be all or nothing.

Anyway, that's my theory.

I agree - some say LB is negative in these comments. I do not get that. I think when he says CM is off in England doing who knows what and things like that, he is being purposefully funny. LB also has said that FM has a new sound without CM and that if CM called and said "I want back in" that would not go over too well. I think he was saying they have worked hard without her and are proud of it, etc. Also, CM sent the band flowers the opening night of this your and she was there at that London concert. Granted some say SM should have played in London, but I think she chose not to because she is officially retired from FM.

So, I think there are no hard feelings.

I just got the Time album a few days ago, I found it used for 5 dollars so I said "what the heck!", I'm glad I did because I really like the songs by Christine, as well as These Strange Times, and Talkin to My Heart.

Anyways, the reason I bring this up is because, is it possible that Christine never even met Bekka? It doesn't seem like they have vocals on any of the same songs, they weren't on tour together, and in the band pictures in the time record, they aren't in any mutual pictures. So, could it be possible that even though Christine and Bekka were in the same band at the same time, they never even met?

PS: Everyone, get the Time record! Christine's songs are amazing!

I think in all seriousness. All three writers have a great deal of respect for each other. And at any given time, LB got pissed and said smart-aleck stuff about all of FM members. That's just him. I actually think over the years, he's picked on CM the least. I agree he would be happy for her success. Christine has said some off-color stuff about her bandmates as well.

I've always thought the photos in the 'Time' liner notes, looked like they were taken pretty much at the same time (no pun intended)... but, you're right, there are no pics of Christine & Bekka together.
Also, any 'Time'-era photos of the group together, show them without Christine.

So, it's highly possible that they never met, or maybe only met once.

'Time' is a great album, but that was a very odd point in FM's history, for sure.

Also, I think the band or at least CM may have learned a lesson from that. I have always thought CM was not thrilled to come out of her 1990 or so "first retirement" to do The Dance. But she did and she did the 40 or so city American tour she agreed to. Then, she had had enough. I also think no one really was 100% sure The Dance would be as wildly popular as it was.

Food for Thought!

I remember seeing a photo of the Time band with all 6 members. I believe it was on Neil's U.K. site, but I'm not sure. That's the only photo I've ever seen with all 6 of them together in the picture.

I also agree with everyone here about Christine's Time songs. And, Bekka's songs were almost as good as Christine's in my opinion.

Yeah, you beat me to it! :) The link isn't working for me when I try to paste it in here but in addition to that pic at Neil's board, there's definitely another one in existance in a Q magazine circa that time with the whole band where Bekka & Christine are wearing fake beards as a joke since all the guys had/have them (well, not Billy but...). It was just a puff piece to sort of prove that FM "still existed" then and that "their new album was coming soon (etc.)". Not that this means CM & Bekka were bosom buddies or anything but it at least shows that (though the pics could've been faked :) ) that they must've at least met up for those photo shoots. :)

One big difference. SYW Fleetwood Mac included Lindsey and Stevie. Time FM did not. Putting Christine's songs on Time would hopefully make it more commercial. At least the record would still have one of the three Rumours writers on it. With the lineup of Buckingham and Nicks on board, Christine wasn't needed as badly for SYW. That's my theory, if indeed Chris was rejected from the project because of her unwillingness to tour.

Thank you, macfan57 & John, for reminding me of that photo... I had forgotten.

It is apparently from the same photo-session that produced the pics in the 'Time' liner-notes, and it's odd that they didn't use this particular one as well, since it actually shows the entire band together.

At any rate, at least we have the answer to our question... Christine & Bekka did indeed meet, at least once! :)

We are really fortunate that she got a label and we will be hearing some new tunes from Christine. Let's hope that her new album lives up to our expectations. I'm sure it will. Has Chris ever written a bad song? I don't think so. Maybe the only FM member that has not written a real stinker.

Actually, my money is on pressure from the record company. To begin with, there was never a tour for "Time." That band only toured prior to the album's release. Since "Time" bombed, the record company probably didn't want to invest money on a tour, which means there was no pressure on Christine to tour.

"The Dance," though, was a huge hit, making its debut at the top of the charts and having a lot of corporate support (Best Buy, MTV, etc). There was too much money and pressure to not tour. That's probably why she quit after "The Dance." Still, remember, it was Christine who put an end to the tour.

In terms of personal relationships, I've always gottent the impression that Christine was closer friends with Billy than either Stevie or Lindsey.

I doubt it. In an AOL chat that Johnny Stew already mentioned, she said she thought the addition of Dave Mason was an odd choice as she didn't see what he had to do with Fleetwood Mac. When asked who she would rather Mick have gotten, she said "Lindsey Buckingham," as he added something to the chemistry. In fact, she also said that she would love to work with Stevie and Lindsey again. I don't think there are hard feelings here. I just think Christine knows that if she were to record with the group, she would have been pressured to tour, which for her is out of the question.

'Meantime' is currently #13 on the Pre-order chart at Amazon.co.uk, and 111th bestselling album on the site overall...

Oh my God, Chili, you must be REALLY old!!!

 Jeez, I guess so. I can remember a time BEFORE Fleetwood Mac existed...and a time even before the Beatles were known in the USA. Come to think of it, there was a time when I was alive at the same time Buddy Holly was. And, Alaska & Hawaii weren't states yet. Holy CRAP! Mari, you're right!!

Ahhh...I remember the blissful sounds of:

"...everybody's going surfin'....surfin' USA..." :blob2:

I remember hearing Spare Me a Little from Bare Trees on WMMS in Cleveland. I asked my uncle who was singing, as woman in rock were a little more rare at the time. I think it was the first time I heard the words Christine McVie.

Thank God for uncles and big brothers that taught me good music! To think I thought the band was done after Bob Welch left!

Some still seem to think that's when they only really got started :D

(Now before you get started Chili, YES I know about Peter Green! )

& thank god for moms with great record collections! Because when I became a fan in 1990, the Mac was still perceived as very very uncool. Not that I ever understood what "cool" was anyway  ;)

You mean they're still around? Not to beat a dead horse, but I've give anything for another Welch/McVie album(drool........).

[QUOTE=Johnny Stew]Well, it peaked at #43 on Billboard's singles chart... just missing the Top 40... so it's not exactly one of FM's biggest hits, unfortunately. But it's a terrific song, nonetheless, and deserves to be played often!

Yeah it sadly peaked at #43...I remember calling radio stations in Phoenix at the time trying to get it to go higher, to no avail. But remember this: ALAYF was a #1 hit on the Adult Contemporary Billboard chart, and that's pretty impressive :)

I would say that Chris was closer to Stevie than Billy given all the time the two ladies spent in the band together AND the history and the girl talk they shared during the Rumours sessions. They also seemed to be VERY tight during the two non-LB tours (Shake the cage, Behind the Mask).

I just don't see Christine and Stevie being buddy-buddy. That's not to say that they have a bad relationship. I think they had a very friendly relationship, and were probably close early on, but I think after the whole "Rumours" album and tour were behind them, their releationship was mostly professional. I don't think they'd be close if they didn't have Fleetwood Mac. Christine and Billy were buddy-buddy prior to his involvement in Fleetwood Mac, and appeared to have a great relationship, even during the "Time" years. I've never read Christine say a bad thing about Billy, and vice versa (but I haven't heard Billy say too many bad things about anybody in the first place). I can't necessarily say the same about Stevie and Christine.

I agree. Stevie has said that Chris is her best friend, but she hasn't seen her in almost seven years? C'mon now.

Mick said exactly the same thing about Christine & Stevie in a Goldmine interview around 10 years ago. They didn't dislike each other, but they were no longer close friends. They just grew apart over the years after the Rumours tour. Rick Vito also said something similar in his Q & A here on this website. But, I have an interview CD in which Christine speaks of Billy as one of the nicest people she's ever known, very easy to get along with. You could see they were great friends during all those interviews that they did to promote the Greatest Hits & Behind The Mask albums.

Just like any friendship, they had there ups and downs. They were very close in the beginning and as drugs and fame took over they both had there own agendas and problems. Christine was Stevie's maid of honor at her wedding. The song Think About It was written for Christine. So there was for sure a bond at certain points.

Christine has said they don't go shopping together and have had a few "tiffs". But they have a great deal of respect for each other.
