View Full Version : When Bad Things Happen To Good People

I stayed late at work (as usual) and on my way home a wrecker behind my car got on the median to pass me, jumped off, & side-swiped my car, scratching it & tearing off the driver's mirror in the process. I won't go into all the details - let's just say they involve him taking off & then later showing up at the police station where we bumped into each other, and where he tried to claim I hit him (    ), and where the cops said that though I did everything right, I couldn't prove anything. My word against his. Like a schmuck I begged him repeatedly to tell the truth. He never responded that he was, but just smirked, and since there were no witnesses that's that. The cops felt for me, saying the situation sucked & there was nothing anybody in my shoes could have done differently. I was beside myself. Money is tight & work is especially stressful now. You can imagine my frame of mind tonight, though I acknowledge this situation is nothing compared to the war in Iraq or the crap Brian's wife has been through. It still sucks. I was upset for the first two hours, and now I'm super pissed, the kind of anger you get when you are seriously wronged and there's nothing you'll ever be able to do about it.

Which brings me to my questions:

When was the last injustice in your life?

Do you believe in karma, divine retribution, or anything of the like?

Thanks for letting me vent.

Hey Jake. I'm really sorry about your car. At least you weren't hurt. Yes, it seems like these kind of things happen all the time to good people. I'd like to think that there is such a thing as karma and that what goes around comes around. I have seen a couple of instances where people who I felt deserved it did get zinged, but who knows if that was just coincidence or some kind of retribution from the universe. I am surprised no one else on the road stopped to help, well, maybe not surprised as much as dissapointed. Perhaps there is some way you could find someone who witnessed what happened? Regardless of that, you should definately report it to your insurance company. Anyway, again, glad you weren't hurt. I'll say a little prayer that the guy who hit you gets crabs, or really bad hemorrhoids, or better yet, a conscience. Feel better!

You and this damn car. What? Is there a neon sign on your roof that says, "PLZ HIT ME" or something??

In December, my mother was driving my car and while she was out, some old woman hit the car and took the back of the drivers side mirror off. Unfortunately, my car has all of this electronic gadgets (including said mirror). They can't replace just the part that's missing so they have to replace the ENTIRE mirror. Of course, insurance companies being well...insurance companies...would not cover the entire cost of replacing the mirror even though it wasn't my mothers fault. The mirror finally gets replaced on Friday.

Glad you're not hurt.

I will report it to insurance in my full day tomorrow (five classes to teach, two co-worker birthday celebrations, and 22 conferences). Eventually maybe I'll post more details about the ther cars. I'm fried right now. But I do appreciate your concern.

Regarding the hemorrhoids, believe me, for the first 45 minutes I was ballistic after he took off and my mouth was foul. After an hour or so, I thought of the absolution prayer that Jews do on Yom Kippur, in which you ask that G-d not punish others for crimes against you, and that G-d not punish you for the like either. Of course, a small part of me hopes they're reaching for Preparation H by the scoop anyway.
It's easier to let go of all the negativity when things work out for you, you know?

How much was it? I think I'll be in the same boat.

Well, there is no cost for labor on the statement so i'm not certain we'll have to pay out of pocket for that and my father isn't sure either so we'll find out Friday about that. I'm fairly certain the cost of the mirror was close to $150.

Less than I thought. Thanks.

Jake ~ I feel for you I really do. My Honda just went back into the body shop AGAIN because some idiot in a huge truck with a grill on front re-ended me. Texas drivers need to slow down and look before you leap. Sorry for your car. I know how bad it sucks!

Well...it's tomorrow...hopefully it's a better day for you. Did you speak with the insurance company? What's the damage? Hopefully it's not too much. You've got a date with Stevie (and the others) in TX

Damn Jake...sorry to hear about your car...but at least you are okay...glad there was no damage to you....

I'm a firm believer in "what goes around comes around" so I think that bastard who hit you will totally get his in the end...the thing that sucks is that you won't be around to see him get his...

I have often wrestled with this question. At times in my life, I've felt like I was absolutely cursed. An ex-boyfriend once told me that the devil paved a path for bad people while good people had a rougher row to hoe. I do believe in karma or whatever you want to call it. I've seen it happen too many times in my life but that still doesn't explain why bad things have happened to me! And I'm very sorry to hear about your car. Anything with your car is traumatic. I'm just glad you weren't hurt. I had a similar thing happen about ten years ago and the cops couldn't prove that the other person hit me (which they did) so it was declared a "no-fault" accident (except it wasn't). Dealing with the insurance company because it was a no-fault accident was a nightmare. But it all did get fixed--eventually.

Sorry to hear about this, Jake.
It's made me mad just hearing about this jerk.
Question - what the hell is a 'wrecker' and what is it doing on the roads? Is it a big wrecking ball thing??
It's a wonder that a guy like this doesn't have a trail of prior driving mishaps.

Thanks. And like I said, this other driver wasn't speeding, he was trying to pass me on a narrowing median. Friigin' idiot.

Would you feel comfortable providing more detail? The cops made it seem like that's how this would end up. Yesterday I spoke to the other guy's insurance; they had called me the day before. The guy from Progressive came to look at my car, which pisses me off because my State Farm people have not even contacted me from claims yet, let alone come to see my car. (Guess I'm switching insurance soon. )
Last night I took a cloer look and saw that the rubber trim around what's left of my "mirror" is pushed forward, which should prove my account that I was side-swiped. If I hit him as he says I did (   ), then wouldn't I have had to have been in reverse on the highway for the mirror to go towards the front of the car? I hope that this proves my case, and that the cops just overlooked this evidence.

Well, I don't know his record. Hopefully there's something there.
A wrecker is a tow-truck. It was towing a car and trying to pass me on a narrowing median in heavy traffic. When the median got narrower he swung further into the shoulder next to my car, side-swiped me, and tried to take off three times. The heavy traffic let me catch up to him twice, but not the third time (when we were both exiting & he suddenly swung back to the far left & floored the gas). An hour later he was telling the cops at the station that he accidentally lost me.  I can't battle evil, but I hope the odds are in my favor against stupidity.
