View Full Version : Most overrated songs in history?

Which songs, IYO, are the most overrated in history?
Stairway to Heaven (I like it, it's okay, but not the greatest thing ever written, and the best thing about it, are the drums, not the solo. LOL Yes, I do like Dolly's remake.)
Satisfaction (I don't like the Stones, so any song of theirs is overrated IMO, but this one is just blugh.)
Unchained Melody (OMG, I hate this song with a PASSION and if it gets remade ONE more freakin' time.... )
Those are the only ones I can think of at this moment. I wanna see what everyone else's choices are and I'm sure I'll comment on them. LOL

Then a heretic I shall be.
LOL
I love Pink Floyd (thanks to Seteca and Wetcamelfood)!! I can see how that their music may not be for everyone, it's very freaky and unusual, but I don't think they are overrated. But, dat's jest me. They do play the same songs over and over on the radio tho, and I WISH they'd play some of their more rare stuff, but I want that for FM and all other groups/singers I love.

"Like A Virgin"
"Thriller"
"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"
"We Are The Champions" (though I love Queen)
Funny how Cadillac is using old Zep songs for their commercials these days.

Btw, The song that I think is overrated is Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop"!!! Never have or will care about this song (It is the only song I skip when listening to a cd).

First let me say that I LOVE the Beatles, they are my first love and I will always love them...but two overrater songs from them are:
Yellow Submarine and I Wanna Hold Your Hand....those songs grate on my nerves..
That Outkast song that is ALWAYS on the radio...it annoys the crap outta me
La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin, they need to pull this song OFF the airwaves and never play it again
anything by Avril Laviigohiuehhgn
I agree with Satisfaction...I never got the appeal of that song

FM-Related
Sara. (Zzzzzz.)
Dreams. (The only FM song they ever play on our radio stations. And they play it to death)
NGBA. (Too twangy for my tastes. Matchbox 20's version kicks ass, though)
Just Crazy Love. (This song makes my teeth hurt.)
Wild Heart (This song makes me want to pull each individual hair out of my head when I listen to it. I've never liked it.)
Other
Bring Me to Life- Evanescance
The Tide is High- Blondie (Even though I LOVE Blondie, this song is pretty over-rated. Maybe I'm just sick of it...)
The Sweetest Thing- U2 (I also LOVE U2, but this song grates on my nerves to no end.)
Anything by Sheryl Crow *ducks*.
Anything by Creed.
I'm sure I'll think of some more later.
Edit: Hmm. I love some of the songs y'all are putting on your lists, Stairway, Satisfaction, Every Breath You Take, Unchained Melody, Livin' On a Prayer, etc... But I do agree that some of them are over-rated.

ANYTHING by Bob Seger
Unchained Melody (you're so right on, Christy!)
Imagine- John Lennon (it does nothing for me)
Dreams- Fleetwood Mac (rather dull and lifeless)
Like A Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan (I love Dylan, but this song stinks)
American Girl- Tom Petty (I'm a HUGE Petty fan, but this annoys me)

Led Zep, they are great but I'm tired of their songs. I think Stairway isn't that good. If I want great rock and roll epics, The Who never grows old for me.
Same with Rolling Stones..I agree with Satisfaction...their songs aren't as fresh as the Beatles still sound.
I think Dream On is overrated. I can't stand that song ( Aerosmith)
I think Thiller ( the song) is overrated. It's the same annoying beat over and over and the video...too long.
I think the Doors as a whole are overrated. They missed something musically, lyrically, great, but musically, I'm always left cold. I think once you hit like 18 , you realize oh..there is much better.
I too think Dreams should not have been FM's lone number 1 song. I think Stevie has put out much better.
I think Eminem is overrated. At first he was great but he's just now sounding OLD ...same thing over and over.
I always stray off subject...I'll stop now.

Since I don't listen to commercial radio anymore, especially classic rock, it's hard for me to pick one these days.
But I'd have to agree with the "Stairway to Heaven" choice.
Now, "Satisfaction" can never be considered overrated. It contains arguably rock 'n roll's most recognizable riff. And if you consider when it was released, it was a rather risque tune at that.

WHAAAAATT!!???
You mean to say that you think "Love Me Do," "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "I Saw Her Standing There" sound more contemporary than "Satisfaction" or "Angie?" Never.
I think it is fair to say both bands have timeless music. And both bands have songs that sound dated today. To be sure, I can't imagine something like "Here Comes the Sun" ever sounding dated, but "Love Me Do?" Or for that matter, the Stone's "Miss You" will always be identified with the disco era. But to say the Beatles' stuff has withstood the test of time better than the Stones is a bit off.

I like Dreams and respect it for being FM's only #1 song. I'll usually listen to it if it comes on...but Sara and Gypsy are better Stevie-FM songs/singles IMHO.

Meanwhile, I feel the exact opposite.
Well, ok, I don't feel that "Thrown Down" is necessarily a "masterpiece," but it definitely doesn't cause me to yawn the way "Save Me A Place" does.
As hard as I've tried, I just can't find an appreciation for it. Most days the nicest thing I can say about it, is that it's short... though I have to say that I don't dislike it as vehemently as I used to.
It just amazes me that out of ALL the Lindsey songs one could put in the "masterpiece" category (and there are many), so many people seem to latch onto that one.
Now, if anyone wants to say that "That's All For Everyone" is a masterpiece, I'll agree with them wholeheartedly! :)
That song is completely and utterly under-rated, to the same degree "Save Me A Place" is over-rated.

As for FM songs...I don't think ANY of them are overrated really, except maybe Say You Love Me. I've never thought it was that spectacular of a song, but of course, the hits are usually not my fave songs by people.
Whitney's version of Dolly's I Will Always Love You. I prefer the original because it MEANT something to Miss Dolly and she almost cries when she sings it. Whitney just sings it to be diva-ish.

--unchained melody
--believe (cher)--why was this song a mega-smash-everywhere? during its heyday, you could be anywhere on the globe and the song would be right there, piercing your brain.
--candle in the wind (princess di version)--ok, the original is played a lot as it is, but i still like it...however, the lyrics on the newer version are cornier and by 1997, elton's voice seemed to have aged about 50 years.
--r-e-s-p-e-c-t
--most holland-dozier-holland songs
--most early elvis songs (lyrics like "won't you wear my ring around your neck, tell the world i'm yours by heck" are downright horrendous).
i agree with a lot of the other choices here, too (esp celine dion). however, i have to admit i think dylan's Like a Rolling Stone is a masterpiece. it is my favorite song of all time and it gives me goosebumps whenever i hear it. that and mr. tambourine man (dylan's version)

I agree with most of the songs you all have said.
My picks:
- Most Bob Marley stuff. His music never did anything for me.
- Mmmbop by Hanson - WHAT?! It's just a bunch of jiberish! And to think my sister loved them...
- Most of this so-called 'punk' **** that kids my age are listening to. It's terrible! That includes songs by Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Linkin Park, New Found Glory, and Sum 41.
- Rap in general.
- American Pie, by Don McLean. I know it's already been said, but I just had to express my hate for this song.

I also agree with Celine and only the Whitney version of IWALY...I LOVE the *original* no one can do it like Dolly :D
Angel - Sarah McLachlan
It's a pretty song...but it's been overplayed. They use it when people die waaaay too much. I much prefer Building A Mystery.

Well, a lot of the songs listed I don't think are overrated simply because they're not songs that are talked about a lot and constantly played. They might have had their time (and i'm not saying ALL of them aren't overrated), but by overrated I think of the classic songs that EVERYBODY seems to like, talk about, or think changed the world. That being said, I have the three songs that I think are totally overrated:
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - oh my God did I think Nirvana was awful. Sorry, but I actually like to hear the words that are being sung to me. Plus, maybe they changed music for a time with the whole grunge thing, but just because they changed music doesn't mean they did anything BETTER to it. I think the grunge music movement was awful, and I'm glad it's hardly around anymore.
2. Hotel California - it's an ok song, but I wouldn't call home about it if I heard it for the first time today. Bland and way too long.
3. Yesterday - Rolling Stone named this the #1 pop song of all time? Can you say yawn?
Now let Hell, fire, and brimstone fall on me as I post this, for I know I'll get heat for this.

It has everything in it: fantastic singing, melodramatic music, it was produced to show off the artists pipes; I think all other ballad singers need to take a look at this for the way to do it right.
Glory of Love is a fab song, but it needs an uptempo treatment, NOT the ballad treatment. The little girl from Beaches gave the best rendition of it. ;) :D

I agree, unlike Bette, Bonnie R. is the whole package - player (and a great one at that), writer, performer, and singer. "Green Light" and Nick of Time are amonst my fav.'s to this day not to mention her "I Can't Make you Love Me" (chills) and who the hell else could sing "I ain't some icon carved out of soap - Sent here to clean up your reputation"

They aren't as good quality as the Stevie reels and they do have noticeable hiss, but they are pretty awesome. Part of the reason why I love her so dearly is that she can sing any song as if it was her own.
And...she does write her own stuff and play instruments. ;) Back in the seventies, she had written *tons* of her own material (rumoured to be around 50-70 songs) and recorded them, but something happened with her label or such and they practically stole them from her. As of late, she starting to put her self-penned stuff out there during her tours. We can only hope that she finally records and releases her stuff on albums!

Christy, you are so right with "Satisfaction." I think classic rock radio d.j.'s are obligated to play that song every hour on the hour! Ugh! I'm sick of it, and to the Stones: enough already, you guys sound HORRIBLE, like a sloppy garage band WAY past its prime!! I think it's time to retire now.
