Who was it that suggested I watch Stevie Live at Red Rocks? I was asking if she ever interacted with the crowds and someone suggested watching this, right at the end there's about 7 minutes where she's interacting with the audience getting right in there, hugging, kissing people, reaching out to them and really enjoying herself by the look of things. You can see the crew behind her ensuring she's ok and not gonna get pulled into the crowd, it's madness!! She's a nut, but I LOVE THE DVD AND LOVE STEVIE!!! WOWWWWWWWWWW
Thank you to whoever suggested I get this, I did and will watch it 'OVER AND OVER'

I'm not the one who recommended it, but I'm glad you like it. I love those versions of I Need to Know and Stand Back.
A lot of posters dislike the concert because of all the parts that were filmed later & then edited in, and also because they don't feel the concert captures the tour very accurately.

I think it was me on the Lindsey Ledge when we were discussing the Mirage video. :)
Red Rocks is ESSENTIAL Stevie fan viewing, regardless of the fact that it's not pure and true.
Glad you enjoyed watching it, I haven't watched it in awhile or the Dance. I keep saying I need to watch this stuff and I get sucked in here, on this computer to either work or surf.

Ooohh yes Christy I remember now, thanks for recommending that to me, I just had to have it.
Whilst we are on the subject of Lindsey, when I was watching the TITN DVD, during DREAMS Stevie sings "Lindsey says never break the chain" the subtitles come up and it's sort of cute that she's singing that, as if to say he's not with FM anymore but he's not gonna get away without a mention in this song. It really is symbolic. I LIKE IT!!!
I've also just been doing some reading on a very interesting site http://Stevie Nicks in her own words]Stevie Nicks In Her Own Words[/URL]
There was some interesting reading on both Lindsey and Stevie, she's very frank in her interviews about how she feels and still feels for him (I basically think she is still in love with the guy). If you've read it, let me know your thoughts.
Bye for now.
Regards.
Lorraine :)

I've always felt that she was singing, "Ooh, (s)he says, do not break the chain."

Yes Johnny
I think I switched them on by mistake in all honesty and was pleasantly surprised and gleeful when I spotted them and had to keep going back to see if that's what she really does sing and she does. I felt sorry for her in a way because it was like she was holding on to a part of him in that song, like he privately said to her we must never break the chain (and she's having a dig at him cos he did by leaving FM). It's all kinda sad but sweet really.
You can see in the DVD that she's trying to create that magic with the other guys but it's just not there, even though they are very talented people, that Lindsey magic is just not there for Stevie.

Back to Red Rocks
I didn't realise that stuff was edited in for that vid. What a venue though, was it really done at that marvellous location outside? I've never seen anything like it, imagine gigging live somewhere like that! AMAZING

Yes, the Red Rocks area is in Colorado. You should check out the venue's website for better pics and information!! I've never been to the RR venue, but from watching Stevie's DVD, it looks breathtaking!! I have been in that area tho, and it's beautiful, and Colorado is one of my favorite states to visit.

NOT to be picky, but just because I have to go hear this for myself, but you mean on The Chain, right? Not Dreams?

Red Rocks is always fun to watch. There are a lot of great moments in there....the crowd interaction at the end...the dove that won't leave her hand...Her dance with Brad Jeffries...and great versions of No Spoken Word and I Need To Know.
I thought Beauty and The Beast....especially at the end of the song, you practically see her heart break...(even though the song was inspired by the movie....I can't seem to get over the fact she wrote it for Mick as well)...but I think my favorite song from RR is Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You...something about the way she delivers the song and her facial expressions are quite moving.
However, there are some moments, especially during Edge of 17...where I was like "Whoa, what's up with her?"....Of course, now we know what was up...but in any case it's very entertaining to watch.:)

i think it's actually, "welllll Mick says 'Stevie, this is just one more link in the chain...do not break the chain please!' and i say, and i say, well i have to believe him."
i think she's used that Mick reference ever since.
Regarding the TITN video....during "the chain" i always thought she said "and she says do not break the chain"....i'm almost certain of this....the transcribers in charge of the subtitles didn't ask Stevie what was she saying on that line, most likely they were just assuming that's what she was saying. She used to say this for a while during that song and i know it was "she" and not "Lindsey".
I could be wrong but....i know i'm not wrong!

Red Rocks is quite beautiful and there is really nothing else like it. I got to hug Miss Stevie and talk to her during the Edge Of Seventeen walk at Red Rocks on The Whole Lotta Trouble Tour. She is about as tall as my forehead in the old school boots. She let go of me and I burst into tears. It was an amazing experience.

I grew up in Colorado and saw all 3 of the Red Rocks shows that summer-she played two in the original part of the tour (maybe in June?)then came back I think 2 months later (in August?) for filming. I remember an interview that I read somewhere online (can't remember now if it was sort of current or from that time period) where she talks about her fans and mentions that she loved Red Rocks and that when she wanted to film there people in her record company said she couldn't do that as she hhad already played there twice (both sold out) and that they would want a sell out crowd but she said she new her fans loved her there and would come again. Of course she was right but she did forget to mention that they sold the tickets for around $10 to insure a sell out-which I think was a little less than half price at that time. I actually thought the show was indicitive of the other shows I saw of that tour-although the Edge of 17 guttersquawk (what would you call that part of the song?!?) ummm obviously took the cake for that or any other tour I think it is safe to say. I remember a friend watching the video with me saying " it's amazing a sound like that can come out of a human head, let alone such a pretty one." I agree. AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I F*CKING LOVE HER!!! (Well that and the exorcism she throws down on stage in SOTM from Mirage tour video).
And I REALLY love Outside the rain for some reason on RR video although when it morphs into Dreams (there's a surprise, huh?) I just always lose interest. I've hardly ever liked Dreams live but especially in RR the line "players only love you when they're playin' it for YA". I guess I wasn't too fond of the "sings a song sounds like she's singin' it to YA" line either.
And finally... in some twisted way I have grown to like those cheesy patched in close ups. I like that she thought she could change the hair style a bit and throw in some streaks of color and no one would notice ! (?). At least for the cheesy patched in close ups in TITN video they kept the hair (uggh that hair) the same but really hammed up the sultry/coy bedroom eyes-at-the -camera thing.
P.S. sorry-I just can't stop!! did you ever notice in the TITN video how her real hair moves as hair thats growing from your head does, but that big lump of extensions at the bottom sort of moved as it's own seperate entity-at a slower pace and not in tandem with her real hair??

I bought Red Rocks on DVD recently and absolutely love it (although i already have it on Video...i just never bothered watching it as much).
Am i correct in saying that Rhiannon was the last song on the set list during the Rock a little tour?. During Edge of 17 on the Red ROcks video, towards the end of the song where she is singing "I knooww what it souunds liikkee"...just before she leaves the microphone and walks to greet the audience, the sound/music seems to change, like the slight sound of the crowd and the percussions seem to notably change or dissapear (when she is greeting the audience at the front of the stage) and all you can hear is this very repetitive/droning sound of the drums & piano, until right at the end, she walks back to the microphone and finishes the song. To me, this looks like it is footage from the end of Rhiannon, that they have plugged into Edge of 17 and have somehow looped the sound just for the RR video. Does any of this make sense??
I could be completely wrong, but i wouldnt be surprised seeing as though they plugged in fake Lightning during Dreams and shot the "fake" close ups after the actual concert. Either way...i still LOVE the concert and i think that songs like No Spoken Word and Beaty & the Beast are great performances!!

I love Red Rocks now too. But when I first saw it after it was first shown/released (was it on HBO or Cinemax or something? I forget?), I was upset. She was so "wild" and we all know why, but it was freaky to watch her like that. I was really worried, and kind of bummed too (selfishly, and yet also worried for her too). I was young and naive and it was the first time I ever realized she was into drugs. I had read a supposed quote from here when I was in jr. high (in the early 80's) where she said she never did drugs, and I believed it, at the time. So it was a shock to me. She really looked like she was on the edge and about to go over - at any minute.
But besides that, it's such an excellent video. I *love* the scenery of Red Rocks. It has to be a total "goose-bumpy" experience for any band or singer to perform there. And her songs were wild, I loved that version of No Spoken Word, and I Need to Know. And Beauty and the Beast was lovely. With the little inserts of her and Mick together. And her beautiful white shawl glistening in the light. It was a perfect rendition of it. ANd the scream/growl during Edge of 17 - wow! She was really in *that moment*, eh?! She sounded like a wild cat. I love it.
It was weird to see the touched up areas, but I don't blame her or the business people who decided it. Only thing was they should have made her hair not so different, which made it so obvious.
I also wish they had included I Can't Wait in it. I loved seeing that live when I saw her on that tour.
I haven't watched Red Rocks in a while. Now I am wanting to again. She's so amazing! I must admit though that I now miss the old wardrobe changes she used to do. I miss that, these days, where it's the same dress and hair style, show after show. But now I am just being petty.... She spoiled us for so long...that's all - heh!

I bought it on video a few years ago, when I was first getting into the Mac and Stevie, I didn't really like it, I thought it was ok. But I recently bought the DVD and love it now! Sounds better too... I also bought the Tango DVD, it is great too.
I really really hate those after close up shots, shame on Stevie for trying to trick us, hahaha...

Since I was quoting Stevie from the book Rock Lives by Timothy White over on the FM board, I thought I'd throw this one in here:
"The high point of these disturbing stage excursions (referring to the Rock A Little Tour), preserved for posterity on feature-length home video, is an emotionally harrowing, but ultimately exultant appearance at the Red Rocks amphitheater in Boulder, Colorado. Nicks agrees. 'I could have looked better, and played the set a little better, and been a little less tired, but I
cared that night.'"
I love Red Rocks just because I love any chance to see a Stevie or FWM video. But there were some weird/funny parts. When she does that dance with the guy during Stand Back, my sister walked in and thought it was like some Saturday Night Live spoof or something. And she seemed so hippie-flower-chic-like, like when she is holding the dove. Although I love that part.
I too really loved Outside the Rain at that tour, but I get bored with Dreams live also. It's an awesome song, but I always enjoy listening to the album version best. Although I like the version a lot on the FWM Live album. Other than that, I get bored. The "sing it to ya" and "playing it for ya" I could do without also.
I wish she had done I Can't Wait though on it. That would have been cool.

The cool thing about Red Rocks amphitheatre is that it is a state park (or something equivalent). When there's not a show there, or even during the day when there's an evening show, you can just park & walk around the place (and unless you're altitude adjusted, it can be a chore!). I can honestly say that "I've been onstage at Red Rocks"...and have photos (but unfortunately, not jpgs) to prove it.

You are correct sir. Red Rocks is owned by the City and County of Denver. It's actually in Morrison CO, not in Boulder as someone else posted. It's not even close.

Yes the Beauty and the Beast song was lovely. She was all alone with that white shawl singing her heart out to everyone (with Mick in mind) and her voice is croaky and almost at breaking point like she's going to cry, in fact it does look like she's about to cry when she sings at the end, "you'll always be my beauty, my beauty" she looks really fragile and child like.
Another thing I noticed is the rapport she has with her backing singers, I know that Lori was a great friend of hers in that vid and now she is her sister-in-law but she shares the limelight with Lori during Edge of Seventeen, I thought that was honourable of Stevie to do that. Lori is just in awe of the woman on that particular scene.
It's interesting to read from other fans that this video/dvd was pieced together (close ups etc), and yes I know what people mean about it being cheesey, it does have that about it but still ROCKS. Yeah the scene with the dancer, is cheesey but he is the cheesey one, Stevie still manages to look good and she has a good rhythm when dancing, I love all the kicks and shuffles she does on stage.
I really do love this DVD. :)

Then she used the one clip in her other video Somtimes its a bitch! The REd Rocks was the greatest ever show!!!!!!!! I lived in Colorado for 38 yrs!!!! The show to make sure it was sold out for taping the tickets were only $6.50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was unreal! Best experience! When she gets out of Limo and the camera goes up to croud on wall with banner I am left of screen with my arm up in the air with my desr friend he is in a torq blue t-**** with arm up too... I am blonde blk tank lace... I have watched that video so many times over & over & over as I can't beleive what a birthday gift it was for me~ Yes the end I was able to shake her hand and smile at her! Then you see the back of my head and my jade ring on my left hand index~

I love/hate the Red Rocks dvd. I agree that BATB, Edge of 17 and HAEWAFY are amazing...I loved the rest of the songs too, but especially those. However, those close up shots just ruin the whole thing. What I want, and what we'll NEVER get, is the unedited version. Stevie always talked to the audience...like at the US Festival...saying all kinds of crazy stuff...in the Red Rocks dvd, there is absolutely no interaction with the audience until the end. I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I want to see the whole drug fueled thing

I must have been 14 or 15 when I first saw Live at Red Rocks on HBO back like 1987 and didn't get to see it again for many years and it went out of print on video. In 1995 as soon as it was re-released I bought the VHS and later the DVD. I happen to like this show and everyone knocks it and her adding in the pretty close ups but Stevie's a very vain person about her appearance and I don't blame her one bit for wanting to add in parts where she's prettier and looking better. Instead of people knocking it we should all be happy she even released this at all. It's probably the last time we'll ever hear songs like No Spoken Word etc. ever again.

I don't have a problem with the close ups in terms of her perhaps wanting to looking better...I personally think she looked fine in the unedited version too. Its the fact that they didn't even bother to try and make it look a bit more realistic...for one thing, her hair was completely different! I would prefer that we get dvds of an actual performance, not one that is made up of just the best bits...but at the very least, if we are going to get "touched up" performances, the least they can do is try to make it as close to the real thing as possible.

Yeah, I got to side with you on this one. Red Rocks , I think, is pretty darn bad but at the same time it's really amazing to watch now because it does give you a good idea of what a train wreck Stevie was on that tour. Waaaay too many drug dealers hanging around backstage on that tour. But on the other hand, even through Stevie was a coked up mess, she rocked out on that tour like she hasn't since. I think the RAL tour was the last we saw of the rock & roll woman Stevie use to be.

I think Stevie saw the actual footage from the show and was so embarrassed of herself that she went and done the close ups. Otherwise we probably would have never had a Live at Red Rocks at all. So I'm grateful for that.

I think thats what happened too. From what I understand, the close up shots on the dvd were her second go at them...she must not have like the first. I really do love the dvd overall, though. I don't want it to seem like I don't like it...there were just a couple small issues I had with it :)

I completely agree. It frustates me to no end that Red Rocks, US Fest and TINT have been officially released on DVD and the Tusk Documentary, Mirage video and the 1981 White Wing Dove HBO special haven't. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
I really wish Bella Donna was remastered, with bonus tracks (Blue Lamp, Sleeping Angel, Gold & Braid Live), demo's (Julia, Still Of The Night, China Doll etc) and the HBO special in it's entireity on fully remastered DVD.

Ditto!! How amazing would it have been to see the Mac in '77 or '79?
If you listen carefully to the audio bootleg of the original RR show and compare it to the overdubbed vocals, you can pick out which original vocals were left intact. She may have overdubbed the whole show but they did not use 100% of that overdub.
Some examples, In EO17 that whole "well the sky never expects it when it rains" verse is the orignal vocal with the wailing too, and the crazy "i know what it sounds like..." ending. The middle part "well well they say that this is just a dream" of OTR is the original. In BATB, the "I've chaaaaaannged" all the way to the ending is original. Also, I noticed while Jay Winding was playing the intro to BATB, Stevie was dedicating the song to Mick. They obviously omitted this. There are other parts in other songs where the original vocal was left in - maybe parts that weren't so sloppy but effective and powerful. As crazy as some of the orignal vocals are, they are effective, IMO. But was surprised when I heard the bootleg that Stevie didn't try to be a little more cleaned up and on time with the lyrics being that there was a film crew there that day.
One thing I've been curious and suspicious about is the overdubbed vocals. When I first saw the concert on tv or when I bought the tape in 87, I was taken aback at her vocal (the dubbed ones). She sounded very different than when I saw her, like she had inhaled helium, plus it sounded hollow to me. I remember thinking, "she didn't sound like this when I saw her. It was really obvious to me. I have a lot of RAL boots and she still sounded like herself throughout the tour, despite her vocal delivery. She still had a certain richness that apparently she lost when she did the overdubs. She didn't sound like this on that tour even the last concert in Australia. This same quality of her vocals remind me of the ones on No Questions Asked and on the TITN video. To be honest, I cringe when I hear it. It's worse in the TITN video.
So, what happened? Was the hole in her nose apparent when she supposedly went to that doctor before the tour? Or maybe the hole happened after? Did she have some procedure done to try to fix the inside of her nose from the coke damage and maybe that changed the sound of her voice?

I think it's a combination of so much coke abuse, and the fact that most of the performance she did from 1987 - 1991 were all pretty half arsed thanks to the klonopin. Some shows shone through - Houston 89, the Whiskey show and Irvine Meadows from 1991. All the Greek Theatre shows seemed to rock too. But generally speaking, it was all pretty much stand. sing. twirl. point. sing. bow. show over.

Does anyone know the dates of all 3 Red Rocks dates on the RAL tour?

Live at Red Rocks is the worst live music dvd ever made!!!! It's soooo pitiful!!! The versions of BATB, Edge of 17 and HAEWAFY are some of the worst she has done, I think. Hate, hate, hate it! And the part with the white winged dove is soo terrible and embarassing![/
Haha :D Well, NO, no no...can't be the worst versions of those songs????!!! I think the Red Rocks Edge of 17 and the Melbourne symphony orcestra version are the absolutly best ever done!!! And the Red Rocks BATB and Melbourne symphony orcestra too :) And the Red Rocks version of HAEWAFY IS the best!!
And no, it's not embarrassing to see her with the dove...just cute, I think...
Ok, I take back that it maybe isn't the best music dvd EVER made BUT it's definatly NOT bad!! Tho I would love to have it without the close-ups...

I think it was stated here or another board that she started with a voice coach around then, to help her sing from a different place rather than out of her throat. It made all the difference in the world (sadly), and she was never ever the same.
That, and Klonopin. And maybe the nose-hole perforated around around '87. And maybe no one noticed her phlegmy nasal-ness before that because her method of singing on stage was usually a loud throaty bellow.
I'm just speculating, but No Questions Asked is definately the starting point of Stevie 2.0

Thank you to whoever suggested I get this, I did and will watch it 'OVER AND OVER'
Lorraine :):wavey:
It wasn't my suggestion either but I got a kick out of your reaction.
It's great to get such a charge off of it. Some like it, some don't, but whatever lights the fuse is key.

All I really did was took your entire original quote from this thread and changed the LOVE words to HATE. Did you notice?

I hate it because of the way they re-edited it. If they had just given us the performance with it's original close ups it would still have been bad, but not as bad as it is now. It was cool watching her hold and release the dove in Edge of 17, but Stevie looked terrible and was so wasted that it was embarassing as a fan to watch this. It's not like I could have bragged about it at that time and actually showed it to people. I bragged about the Mirage concert video and the Bella Donna concert video and actually impressed a lot of people with those. She could have released the video of the US Festival from 1983 but the 1986 tour as a release should have been the show I saw in Philadelphia where she was actually great. The other four shows I saw in 1986 were not great.
Just for the record the Live DVD she released this year bores the crap out of me also. It looks more like a concert starring Waddy Watchel with Stevie as a guest.

Not gonna lie-- as much as "Edge of Seventeen" from Red Rocks scares the **** out of me... I kind of love it because of the fact that she's such a coked out trainwreck. That wail is phenomenal: phenomenally frightening and phenomenally awesome.
Rock A Little is far from my favorite Stevie era, and yet the Red Rocks DVD is kind of a little glimpse in time. I agree with whoever said that it was the last time that Stevie really, truly rocked pre-Klonopin. At the very least, the DVD is interesting because we get to see Stevie teeter on the edge like never before.

You make an excellent point. I don't think its just the the live dvd, though. One similar thing that always annoyed me is that his guitar is way too loud during live shows...he seems to drown her out. Does anyone else feel the same way or is it just me?

It's kind of funny that one of the European articles said Stevie was complaining that Lindsey's guitar was so loud (during soundcheck, I think) that she needed more ear protection, when Waddy's sound is not exactly understated and she definitely has more control over that.

YESSSS!!!!
And has any noticed that when Waddy came back out on tour in 2001, it was pretty much the start of the boring-same-setlist we've had for the last bunch of tours, ignoring everything from RAL, OSOTM and SA?
