Which member contributes the best songs on each album, in your opinion?
Here are my thoughts:
White Album- Christine McVie (Over My Head is what really makes me pick her on this album)
Rumours- Stevie Nicks (Dreams. Enough Said)
Tusk- Christine McVie (She is completely underrated on this album, but I love her mellow songs on this record)
Mirage- Lindsey Buckingham (I love his songs on Mirage, what is the deal with everyone saying his songs are bad on this album?)
Tango- Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie (A tie.
The Dance- Christine McVie/Stevie Nicks (a tie, I just can't decide!)
Say You Will- Stevie Nicks (The title track and Illume are just too good!)

White Album- Stevie hands down
Rumours- Stevie Nicks (tough one and kudos to LB's GYOW and CM's YMLF is just brilliant)
Tusk- LB (just so out there  ) honorable mention to Sara
Mirage- Stevie - hands down with Gypsy - honorable mention to Hold Me.
Tango- Lindsey Buckingham (TITN song is brilliant) Honorable mention to CM for LL and Everywhere
The Dance - Stevie Nicks (SS with that voice and those looks - SHEEBUS!!!) Honorable mention to LB for BTLH
Say You Will - LB (very tough but for me Stevie's use of her lower register made some her songs (Illume and SYW) less compelling to me - even though I still like them very very much and consider the writing stellar).

-Future Games- Danny Kirwan (Woman of a Thousand Years is just GORGEOUS)
-Bare Trees- Hmmm... Chris and Bob have so few songs on this album, but the ones they do have rock (except Homeward Bound... I hate the vocal on that one)... So I'll say Bob Welch, because I love all of his songs on BT.
-Penguin- Dave Walker . I'm actually half serious here. I love Road Runner and the Derelict, but I'd have to say Chris' songs are the best.
-Mystery to Me- WHAT A CRUEL THING TO DO, MAKING ME CHOOSE A FAVE FROM MTM!!! I love, love, LOVE all the songs on here (even Forever), so it's a tie, end of story.
-Heroes Are Hard to Find- Bob Welch (But I do love Prove Your Love and Come a Little Bit Closer)
-Fleetwood Mac- Christine. Stevie's songs on this album are *so* much better live, and Lindsey's are mediocre at best (except Blue Letter) on this one.
-Rumours- Christine... I love all of her songs on here, and I think it has some of her best vocal work. All of Rumours is great (except Dreams... if I hear that song one more time, I'll scream), but Chris' songs really shine on here, imo.
-Tusk- See my thoughts on MTM. Tusk is perfection, not one bad song on it. But, if you're making me choose.... Lindsey Buckingham. His songs are flawless on Tusk, end of story. But Stevie's are excellent too, and so are Christine's, but I'm not too fond of Honey Hi.
-Live- Stevie... Rhiannon and Fireflies come to mind.
-Mirage- Lindsey. I don't see why everyone hates Lindsey's Mirage songs, I think they're some of his greatest (Especially EOTW... Oh yeah :D)
-Tango- Lindsey and Christine tied. Stevie's songs are alright, but I think that Lindsey and Chris save this album.
-Behind The Mask- Christine's are the best.
-Time- I can't really say, because I truly dislike this album, not just because it's cool to hate Time. Bekka's vocals on here make me cringe, Billy's songs get on my nerves to no end, Dave's are alright, and Chris' are kind of mediocre compared to some of her other songs. I'll have to say that I like Dave Mason's the most.
-The Dance- All of them. Impossible to choose from that one.
-Say You Will- DEFINITELY Lindsey.

"Affairs Of The Heart" is mediocre, but listenable (alternate versions are MUCH better than what was released)
"Love Is Dangerous" is pretty good, but pales in comparison to Rick Vito's own solo version.
"Freedom" is ok, probably would've been better had she recorded it on a solo album with the Heartbreakers backing her...then recorded "Whole Lotta Trouble" with this incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. And, again, there are much better alternate versions of this than what was finally released.
"The Second Time" is the worst piece of tripe Fleetwood Mac has ever recorded. (and by far the only "bad" song on BTM, IMEBHO)
Who gives a sh*t what Buckingham thought? He didn't want to be in Fleetwood Mac anymore and at the time, I thought "good riddance". I happen to think "When The Sun Goes Down" is one of the better tracks on Behind The Mask...then again, I LIKE Zydeco music...plus, the vocal harmonies on it are amazing.
The fact is that both Billy Burnette's & Rick Vito's best tunes (recorded for BTM) were left "in the can" and not released on BTM.

Then Play On and Mr. Wonderful - Peter Green, of course
Mystery to Me - Christine for Why
Penguin - Christine for Did You Ever Love Me
Bare Trees - Bob Welch for Sentimental Lady. Love that song.
White Album - Christine - but S&L's songs on here reach their greatest potential live :)
Rumours - DEFINITELY Lindsey, ALL of his songs on that album are AWESOME.
Tusk - Stevie - Sara and Angel put her over the top on this one.
Live - Stevie for Fireflies and Rhiannon.
Mirage - definitely Stevie.
TITN - Lindsey. I may hate Family Man, but the other songs are there are much better than the infamous WTTR....S and WISYA. Blech.
BTM - I guess Stevie. Haven't listened to it in a while, though.
Time - Christine
The Dance - counting the old ones, Lindsey. His songs shine live.
SYW - tie. EFO and TD are so great, Silver Girl and Illume so bad. I love SYHA and Red Rover, but Murrow is blah. So I'll just answer with "both" lol

Future Games - Tie, Christine and Bob. They both have the best songs on the album (Morning Rain, Future Games) and it's a toss up between them.
Penguin - Christine, hands down!
Bare Trees - Probably Danny, for supplyin' the rockin'
Mystery To Me - Bob, but Chris also put on some great, great stuff
Heroes Are Hard To Find - She's Changing Me is one of their best songs ever, but so are the title track and Prove Your Love. Angel is also pretty good. It's a toss up.
White Album - Stevie
Rumours - Toss up between Chris and Lindsey
Tusk - Stevie easily
Mirage - Toss up between Stevie And Chris
Tango - Chris
Say You Will - neither of them
wondergirl9847
01-12-2004, 07:28 PM
Then Play On - Dangit...hard one...I love Danny so much...I'll go with Danny, even tho Oh Well is on this too.
Future Games - Danny Kirwan for Woman of 1000 Years alone, but all his songs are perfection
Bare Trees - Danny Kirwan - PERFECTION here!!
Mystery To Me - Sheesh...hard one...I'll go with Miss Christine, although Hypnotized is one of the greatest songs EVER!!
Live - Stevie for Fireflies alone, plus Rhiannon.
BTM - Christine because I ADORE Save Me and BTM! I do like ITBOMM and Love is Dangerous too.
I haven't listened to Kiln House (yet on my new LP!!!), Heroes or Penguin enough to really know the songs.
Johnny Stew
01-12-2004, 07:42 PM
Yikes, this is hard.
For the earliest albums, the best songs definitely belong to Peter.
On 'Kiln House' and 'Bare Trees,' I'd say they belong to Danny.
Future Games: Bob Welch
Penguin: Bob Welch
Mystery To Me: Bob Welch
Heroes Are Hard To Find: Christine
Fleetwood Mac: Stevie (Excellent songs from each, but I have to go with Stevie, for "Landslide," "Crystal," and "Rhiannon.")
Rumours: Stevie ("Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman," and "Silver Springs"... 'nuff said.)
Tusk: Stevie (They may not have the experimentalism and adventure that Lindsey's songs have, but her contributions are utterly sublime)
Live: Christine (I think her songs really come to life here.)
Mirage: Stevie (Nothing on this album can match "Gypsy.")
Tango In The Night: Lindsey (Hey, i had to give him at least one, right? ;) Seriously though, Christine and Stevie have their moments, but, overall, Lindsey dominates this one.)
Behind The Mask: Stevie (Billy hits with "In The Back Of My Mind" and "When The Sun Goes Down," but misses with "Hard Feelings," "Do You Know," and "When It Comes To Love." The latter two songs also bring down Christine's overall contributions. Rick unfortunately isn't given enough of a chance to show his personality on this one, aside from the duets with Billy and Stevie. Meanwhile, "Affairs Of The Heart" is jangly and fun, and "Freedom" is a classic rocker. Throw in "Love Is Dangerous," and I have to go with Stevie on this one.)
Time: Christine (This is, in my opinion, Christine's finest collection of songs on any album.)
The Dance: Stevie (While Lindsey wins for best new song, with "Bleed To Love Her," Stevie wins with the sheer power of "Landslide" and "Silver Springs"... and, on the DVD, "Gold Dust Woman.")
Say You Will: Stevie (Lyrically, this album has Lindsey's best Fleetwood Mac contributions, but Stevie wins out here too, because of the heart, soul, maturity, feistiness, and gentleness variously conveyed across her songs. She shows the most emotional range, and thus scores the most captivating moments on the album.)

Gotta disagree here.
I think "Hard Feelings" is great. Very Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles feel, mixed with your basic "Fleetwood Mac power pop".
"Do You Know?": I think it is top-notch as well, a great little romantic ballad. A great pre-cursor to Christine's "new" tunes on The Chain box
"When It Comes To Love": Ok, you got me there...it isn't quite up to the standard of some of the other tunes on the album, but considering the song that follows it...;)

chili, I could grant you "Hard Feelings"... which really isn't a bad song. I just don't think it's a particularly strong one either (especially not enough to have been a single... but don't get me started!).
And "Do You Know" is pretty and all, but I also think it's somewhat boring and doesn't really go anywhere.
Of course, any criticism I have of various Mac/Mac-related songs should always be qualified by the statement that I'd still prefer it to just about anything else on the shelves... I just don't always love some of the tracks as much as the others.

You best be believin' . I do not like her vocals... I think that she has a good voice for country, but I can't stand country, so that's just me. I just cannot get in to her and Billy's songs. They're just not my thing. I do kinda like Bekka's backing vocals, but not her lead ones. To each their own, I guess...

Winds of Change is ok, nothing great though. I just don't like her voice. I think she over-does it with the vamping, and I happen to like a lot of singers who vamp. I just don't care for her songs on Time.

My favorites are:
Fleetwood Mac: This goes to Christine. I love "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", and "sugar Daddy". And I love their harmonies together.
Rumours: This IS a tough one, so I'll just say it's a 3 way tie!
Tusk:This is definitely Stevie's moment. Her vocals, songs, and on tour performances shine!
Mirage: Another for Christine, although I love Stevie's contributions too. The tour was awesome!
Tango: This one I love Lindsey's songs the best. The title track and "Big Love" are the best.
Behind The Mask: I like Billy's songs the most, "Hard Feelings" and "In the Back of My Mind" do it for me. Christine's title song is really good though.
Say You Will: Because I tend to get into Stevie's music more, this goes to her, but I really believe this is her strongest group of songs on a Fleetwood Mac album since "Tusk". But I do love "Murrow" and "Say Goodbye".

White Album: Stevie, three of her best tunes.
Rumours: Lindsey. NGBA and SHN really do it for me.
Tusk: I have to say that it's a tie between Lindsey and Stevie. Both of their songs are just phenomenal. Christine really missed it with this album, IMO.
Mirage: Stevie. I'm not a fan of this album in general.
Tango: Lindsey and Christine were both superb, not one clunker from each. However, Lindsey wins just because of the title track, Big Love, and Caroline. Stevie's contributions are mind-numbingly awful and quite embarassing.
BTM: Christine, hands down. The title cut is a classic, IMO. Once again, Stevie wasn't in top form, but she was much better than on Tango.
Time: Christine. Nights In Estoril is perfection. Bekka should stick to singing Folger's commercials.
The Dance: Stevie is phenomenal.
Say You Will: Lindsey. Every song is a work of brilliance. Stevie loses just because Thrown Down is unbearable.

Wow...this is harder than it looks.
<u>Fleetwood Mac</u> - Stevie only had 2 songs where she sang lead (even if she did write "Crystal"), and I'm not crazy about the studio version of "Rhiannon." Out of Christine's songs, "Sugar Daddy" was a kind of a turkey...overall, I think she's done better...I love "Over My Head," though. So, I suppose I'll have to go with <b>Lindsey</b> for this one. I love "Blue Letter," and "I'm So Afraid," especially..."World Turning" (w/Christine) is awesome, too. I think Christine has to get an honorable mention here, though.
<u>Rumours</u> - I really like all of <b>Lindsey</b>'s songs here...it's kind of a toss-up between him and <b>Stevie</b>, I think...although, if you include "Silver Springs"...I'd definitely have to give it to her. I dunno...this one is a tie, I think.
<u>Tusk</u> - <b>Lindsey</b>, definitely...with Stevie getting an honorable mention.
<u>Tango in the Night</u> - this one's easier...since Stevie's songs suck (to be blunt) compared to Lindsey's and Christine's. I think it goes to <b>Lindsey</b>, though, with Christine getting the honorable mention.
<u>The Dance</u> - <b>Stevie</b> definitely wins this one. I love the versions of "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" on this one better than the studio versions...and then, there's "Silver Springs" :D
<u>Say You Will</u> - <b>Lindsey</b> again. His songs are brilliant on this one (and on "Tusk" and "Tango," too).

I'll give you that "Say Goodbye" is exceptional... lyrically one of Lindsey's all-time best.
"Red Rover" is good, but it doesn't bowl me over in any major way.
I don't dislike it, but it doesn't knock my socks off either.
When I don't have a lot of time and I just pop 'Say You Will' in to hear a few songs, I play "Murrow," "Miranda" and "Bleed To Love Her," and the rest end up being Stevie's songs... and that's how I gauge who has the "best" songs on an album. The ones I come back to most, or find myself most moved by, hours later.

Stevie loses just because Thrown Down is unbearable. You seem to really enjoy the "Wall Of Sound" version, so it surprises me that you'd hold your dislike of the album version against her in your overall judgement of her 'SYW' contributions.
But then I guess one bad apple can spoil the whole bushel, if the apple is that unappealing to you!

I don't remember much about that album. I don't even have it on CD, and I don't know where the tape is. But I do recall that "When the Sun Goes Down" was one of the standout songs for me. I love that Louisiana feel. To me the song is catchy as hell. Sure the lyrics are banal, but they fit with genre.
I also recall that I kinda dug "Love Is Dangerous." But isn't that riff a rippoff of the "Johnny Stew" riff? I get the sense those guys were listening to old Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey's stuff to "get" the sound. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Hey, Lindsey and Stevie went through all the Peter Green and other Fleetwood Mac albums to get familiar with the band.

But then I guess one bad apple can spoil the whole bushel, if the apple is that unappealing to you!
Let's settle the "Thrown Down Affair" right now!
1. I love the lyrics to the song.
2. I feel that the WOS version has incredibly passionate vocals from Stevie, and ESPECIALLY from Lindsey. He is amazing on that song.
3. I don't like the album vocal one bit. The emotion seems forced (which is the very first Stevie song to ever seem that way to me), it's flat and monotonal, and the music doesn't complement her voice very well.
4. The album version is missing the "passionate Lindsey" and would have greatly benefitted from having him go off like on the WOS version.
5. The WOS version just seemed to have a completely new dimension to the song than the album version. It was two ex-lovers singing to each to each other and you could hear the heartache. That's completely missing from the album version.
6. While the WOS version doesn't have the most fantastic music, the uptempo quality of it is much better suited for the song. Because Stevie's voice is so unappelaing to me on the album version because of her flat and monotonous delivery, the slow and plodding music of that version really makes it sink, IMO.
7. The album version seems VERY rushed, like there was more to the song but it was edited due to time.
8. Finally, the climax of the album version doesn't pay off at all. Those final two lyrics should have been hammered home, but instead, they were just...sung.
Hope this clarifies my lack of Thrown Down love.

Christine has the best songs on that album...even if "Sugar Daddy" isn't great. Whatever Sugar Daddy may lack, is completely made up for with that piano and B3 sound. The "feel" of that song is awesome, IMO. World Turning and Sugar Daddy are my favorite two songs on the White album.

White album:
And the winner is... Stevie
Imo most of the songs on the White album come out better live. Monday mornig and Blue letter are great, but even more on stage. My all time favourite ISA lacks the stage power on the album. Saying that I would have to go with Stevie on this album- the transfer loss is not that large.
I must say that I can`t stand Christines contributions on the White album, Rumours (except Don`t stop) and espescially on Tusk. F.e. here: Warm ways, Over my head, Say you love me and espescially Sugar daddy are the opposite of the kind of music I like. Unfortunately two of these songs were standard on the live shows they did...
Rumours:
easily Lindsey. I never understood the hype about Dreams. It's really an O.K. song to me, I like it- but their greatest hit ever??? I don't get that. I really dislike "I don`t want to know", YMLF and Oh daddy". So Rumours is far from being my favourite FM album. That award goes to... Tusk
Tusk:
Well again Lindsey. It`s amazing how good his and Stevies incredible good songs (as different and contradictory as their contributions here are) fit in together that well. As I mentioned above I cut off all the Christine tracks on my version except Think about me. On the one hand I simply can't stand them. On the other hand they don`t fit to the LB and SN contributions and disturb the concept of the album imo.
Mirage:
Christine wins it for me. Love in store and Hold me- catchy pop tunes I always liked. On the other hand she contributed the worst song- Only over you. But the highlights do count more. To me Lindseys low point is "Empire state", and the "in the shadow of the shadow of the again shadowed shadow- song" is not a real jewel either and goes straight back to the shelve ;-)
Tango:
Lindsey rules
BTM:
Christine's two single hits make it- but all in all I ignore the album- it`s not my cup ot tea. O.K. hopping into the discusson with Chili and the others. I often stated that I don't like FM because of the name but because of the music and the sound (and in the first place because of Mr.Buckingham) So after LB`s departure the band's history ended for me, because they lost their trademark sound. Yes, they changed "the staff" a lot before. So is it forbidden to call the group FM then? Of course not. But my understanding of the band ended there. Billy and Rick- well I never would say they are bad musicians. I saw them live and yes Rick can play the guitar- no doubt. But I never could connect with the contributions of these two guys. To me their songwriting skills are mediocre at best.
Time:
Well there is one song on this effort that I like. It`s Becka`s Wind of change. I think that`s a really fine one.
But I don`t get a FM feeling, not on this song and not on the album- as I said before. There are a couple of guys making some kind of music I am not interested in. The name is the only connection there is.
The dance:
LB
Say you will:
LB
Concerning the time prior to Buckingham/Nicks. I am not too much into blues so the Peter Green era is a little out of my sight (even though I have a lot of respect for his work as far as I know it, it`s a trademark too). For anyone having been a fan since that time- the BN era must have been a drastical change. Probably the same feeling like I have with the Post BN things. But I dare to say that there is a huge quality difference between the FM-LB trademark sound and what came then- at least imo. Yeah, what the listener likes and what not is all about taste, so some of you might disagree and that's O.K. But I doubt that the Billy/Rick incarnation had that stamp/trademark sound to offer, that people did recognize as typical or connect to.
I really appreciate the Bob Welsh era because I appreciate the sound. It`s different from what came then but I would also like it if the bands name wasn't FM. I was skeptical when I bought those albums back in the day and was very surprised how awesome esp. Mystery was. Christine had her best time during that period too imo.
Btw I really would like to hear the songs ChiliD and others are discussing- the ones left out of BTM which you say are far superior to the included tracks. If I ever get a hold on them I will give them a fair chance.

Hmmm... I remembered Love Is Dangerous is on The Chain. So I pulled out my iPod and played it back to back with Johnny Stew. The first handful of notes in both riffs are very similar. They might be in different keys--I'd have to sit down with my guitar to figure that out--but I see a similarity. No big deal though.
Also, in listening to Love Is Dangerous, I started thinking, "Yeah, this is a decent song. I remember listening to it and digging it." But then the line, "Oh yeah this is wild" came and I remembered why I stopped listening to Stevie's stuff after 1985.

ita - everyone gets a little something different from each song. The music and arrangement of Red Rover to me has kind of like a party song theme going on a la My Little Demon. They make me want to dance. Interestingly, Stevie's POTU was such a sad, bitter song, even with the added softening lyrics. Yet, people partied their rear ends off to the dance remixes of it with wlid abandon for like three years. So, go figure

I like her songs on Tusk. "Honey Hi" is the one that does it for me, I think. I love those harmonies.

Dog & Dustbin: Peter Green
Well he wrote "I Loved Another Woman", and that should be enough.
Mr. Wonderful: Peter Green
It only gets better... "Stop Messin' Around", "Lazy Poker Blues", "Trying So Hard To Forget".
Then Play On: Peter Green
Two words: "Oh Well". One of those songs that you never get tired of hearing. Any version. And I include all the Fleetwood Mac vocalists who have tried it out.
Kiln House: Jeremy Spencer
Well I think this album was sort of a way to echo some resonances from the 50's and the 60's and, from that point of view, Jeremy showed a really interesting point of view, very eclectic. The songs that get to me the most are "This Is The Rock" and "One Together". Even though Danny wrote "Jewel Eyed Judy", which is maybe my favorite, I should say that, to me, this album is dominated by the force of Jeremy. I see a little chaos coming. ;)
Future Games: Danny Kirwan
I just think he dominates the whole thing with "Woman Of A Thousand Years". Christine comes very close, though, because her two songs are superb.
Bare Trees: Danny Kirwan
"Sunny Side Of Heaven", "Child Of Mine", and overall, "Dust". But this is such a great album: Bob shines with "Sentimental Lady" and Christine delivers two other great pop gems.
Penguin: Christine McVie
"Remember Me" might be one of her catchiest numbers. I also love "Dissatisfied" and "Did You Ever Love Me".
Mystery To Me: Christine McVie
I would call it a tie but it's against the rules... Yes, Bob has "Hypnotized" and "Emerald Eyes", but Christine's songs are, to me at least, more powerful... and I love all of them ("The Way I Feel" is very underrated), but most of all... "Why" is here. :)
Heroes Are Hard To Find: Bob Welch
Again it should've been a tie. But here you get "Angel", "Bermuda Triangle" and "She's Changing Me".
Fleetwood Mac: Stevie Nicks
"Rhiannon", "Crystal" and "Landslide" showed her best potential. She had to shine because she was not an instrumentalist, and my God how she did it.
Rumours: Christine McVie
Her non-single tracks, included the much underrated "Oh Daddy" could have been hits. "Songbird" is just magnificent... and the hits are delicious gems in the fields of pop music.
Tusk: Lindsey Buckingham
It's his album and he demonstrates it with his best songs to date... "That's Enough For Me", "Save Me A Place" and "Walk A Thin Line" are top spots for me.
Live: Stevie Nicks
"Fireflies" steals the light. Her "Rhiannon" is also great.
Mirage: Stevie Nicks
I seriously doubt that anyone shines here, really. But since I never skip any of the three Stevie tunes here, I gave her the "award". Christine wrote at least two precious tunes, but she also gave birth to the awful "Only Over You"; and Lindsey wrote "Eyes Of The World" & "Can't Go Back", but he also wrote "Oh Diane" & "Empire State"... Stevie, on the other hand, is great in her three songs.
Tango In The Night: Christine McVie
Not one misstep, really. She didn't write the REALLY bad tracks in this album. She wrote the finest. :)
Behind The Mask: Christine McVie
Billy and Rick weren't allowed to shine, and since this album has a lot of collaboration it was hard to decide for one member or the other... I went with Christine, again, because I think she was on top of the game in her songs, and also helping out Billy on the vocals for "In The Back Of My Mind" and "When It Comes To Love". BTW this is a GREAT album.
Time: Christine McVie
She saves the album, again! It looks very fragmented, but her five tunes are really great! Billy does great in one, not so good in other; Dave Mason is great in one, not so good in the other; I don't consider Bekka as a 'real' songwriter even though she's a fantastic singer... and I try to forget that Mick actually did something on this album, other than drumming. "All Over Again" and "Sooner Or Later" are two great gems.
The Dance: Stevie Nicks
She gets "Silver Springs" to shine, and writes (to me) the best 'new' number of the set, "Silver Girl". She's the star of the show.
Say You Will: Lindsey Buckingham
Dominated from beginning to end by his quality songs. His album of real triumph and glory. "Red Rover", "Steal Your Heart Away" and most of all "Say Goodbye" are there to justify it. Welcome back Lindsey. :)
That was fun.

Then again, I've interpreted songs quite differently from others. I remember laughing my cu off when I heard "Brian Wilson" by the Barenaked Ladies the first few times. Then I had a couple people tell me they thought the song was very sad. To this day, I don't see it.

I was just looking at it from LB's explanation that if the Greek Gods (or whatever) suddenly looked at Earth after a awhile of not looking at Earth, they would think WTF. I sort of equated this to satire of Greek mythology. Thus, the humor. Granted, its LB's sardonic humor - thus your point (I think)
