View Full Version : Assembling one album from the hazy years

Stevie said in an interview that she wrote nothing good from 1987-1995, if I remember correctly.
If she had released one album in this period (I know, I'd hate that, too), which THIRTEEN songs FROM ALBUMS THAT WERE RELEASED IN THESE YEARS should be included? Feel free to pick songs that were on albums but were not written by her, but you may not change any song's production, arrangement, vocal, etc. Also, B sides are fair game.
Then choose ONE of the songs to be the album title.

My choices:

Seven Wonders
WTTRS
Rooms on Fire
Long Way to Go
Ooh My Love
Ghosts
Juliet
Freedom
Blue Denim
Destiny
Rose Garden
God's Garden
Paper Doll

The title is Paper Doll (edging out Seven Wonders). Not a bad album, actually. I even had to leave out a few almosts.

Your picks?

Hmmm....now you've got me thinking about burning off a new compilation album, "The Klonopin Years 1987-1995!"

The songs you chose reflect some of the best of those comatose years.

I haven't heard that exact quote, but I have heard similar. What I have heard her say however, is that even though she was on Klonopin when TOSOTM was released and she toured, she was not on Kolonopin when it was written and that she does not think it was a bad album. I have to agree as I really like that album and I think it was not a big hit for a number of reasons-mostly that she just wasn't the hot new thing anymore so it got a little overlooked, and I also think releasing Two Kinds of Love as the second single was wrong, considering Long Way to Go was getting lots of airplay and had entered the Billboard top 10 for Rock Tracks (Rooms On Fire actually went to no.1 on that chart). So I think TOSOTM wouldn't be considered a failure had it had one more hit song, plus that would've helped it sell more. Ooops, sorry about my OSOTM rant!
So I'm not sure I'd have enough to choose from to make an album if I'm considering OSOTM as not an option to choose from, but I would definately say I think Maybe Love Will Change....., and it's B side Inspiration were great examples of Stevie's sort of sweet soft-pop sort of side, that I loooooooooove her take on Free Fallin', and that about 1/2 of Street Angel is pretty good (when she isn't wailing like a female BonJovi, as Rolling Stone said in their review!).

I wish I had room for #s 10 and 13. They're good.
To be honest, I forgot # 7, which is a great one.

I'm with you on all of these except Greta. I think it's one of the worst ever by her. But I do like the outtake with the quicker drum track for some reason.

FYI, from May 12, The Globe and Mail (with thanks to the Nicksfix):

Stevie Nicks doesn't remember it. But that's quite understandable, because she remembers very little from the period. She describes the whole era from 1986 to 1994 as "my black hole." They were, for Nicks, the Prozac years, when a well-intentioned doctor directed her to tranquilizers, such as Prozac and Klonopin, as a way of breaking her from the self-destructive cycle of cocaine and brandy binges that had marked the previous decade.

"The eight years that I took Prozac are the only real regret I have in my life," recounted the 53-year-old singer in Toronto recently. "Those eight years were a big, black hole. I didn't do anything good. I didn't write any good songs."

I love it just because it's something very different from the usual Stevie. it sounds *very* out of place on SA, though. As any GOOD song would.

I love Destiny (in this case, NOT the demo!) quite a bite.
The album version of Greta has the same quality I don't like in Love Changes on TISL. Just don't ask me to name the quality; I haven't been able to.

You'd have to dope me up with valium to get me to give Love Changes a spin on my turntable, and the same goes with Destiny. Destiny smacks of cheesiness and it just seems to go on forevevah. And the sax on it is very annoying to these ears.

I prefer Dave Koz to Kenny G on her songs any day.
I love the harmonies near the end of Destiny. They were left out of the live version on the tour, so the song in concert didn't work for me at all. (The thudding drums were a minus, too.)

I hate to say it, but when I saw her in '94, I flipped through the tourbook during Destiny. Hey, at least I didn't go to the bathroom!

That is the WORST tourbook!
Somebody spilled beer on mine, the pages stuck together and some got torn, and let me tell you, none of that diminished the quality of the book at all.
The full page pics are awful.* There were great photos during that period. Why didn't she use them?
(* I do like the inside cover photo, with her on the red couch, hand on chest, if I remember.)

Sorry, nothing compares in sheer awfulness to the TISL tourbook; that was the pits. I'm embarassed to say that I actually spent $20 on that piece of sh*t.

I only look at the tourbooks once anyways, then I put them in plastic and and frames, then I hang them up.

Again, we agree to disagree. I say the SA tourbook is worse than the TISL one.
And you can't be THAT embarassed if you have them hanging in frames, right?;)

Someone was selling the SA tour book on Ebay last year and got about $100.00 for it and it is definitely not worth that. I paid $20.00 for mine and that was still a bit too much!

I did ! For every show after the 2nd one I saw, Destiny was pee break / beer break time. A good thing too, as this allowed me to see the fantastic altercation between two towering drag queens and a bunch of straight guys outside the men's room at the Alladdin !

My bathroom break was Whole Lotta Trouble. I don't know why but that song never did it for me live. Synth horns, maybe?

In 1991 she gave that song more than she did on the other tours. She sang more of a power vocal - in fact, the biggest of the night in Philly - I think because it was the tour's title song. On the other tours it really blew.

So that includes Rose Garden, even though it was written in 1965?

That is one of my personal favs, but it wasn't written during the Klonopin years.

I'm doing this little exercise without reading anyone else's posts, except for Jake's of course.

1. Seven Wonders
2. Paper Doll
3. Rooms On Fire
4. Long Way To Go
5. Ooh My Love
6. Ghosts
7. Whole Lotta Trouble
8. Alice
9. Doing The Best That I Can
10. Blue Denim
11. Street Angel
12. Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
13. Free Fallin' (I know '96, but I HAD to include it).

I'd call it "Doing The Best That I Can". Not bad Stevie, not bad at all.

That's from the album. Let's just not all have another heated discussion about how Lindsey sang his part alone.

Can I cheat?

I have heard her say she was really disappointed with Street Angel, but I *LOVE* Street Angel. But here was my day-dream of what I wished it had been, which would have made it (well, atleast for me) just incredible....

First, I would have called it ~ Maybe Love... ~ and I would have kept the same album cover and back too. I think it's really pretty and "love"ish. So here is my dream for it...

Maybe Love...

Blue Denim
Greta
Tied Up
Destiny
Mirror Mirror
Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
Kick It
Rose Garden
Unconditional Love
Just Like a Woman
Sanctuary
She Still Loves Him

I know that the quote about not writing anything good from 87-95 was probably real, but....
I posted to this thread (towards the beginning) about how Stevie has said that she wasn't on Klonopin when she wrote the songs for OSOTM and she has defended it as being a good album. I swear I've heard her say that a few times. Hasn't anyone else heard this??? And of course I can't remember where I saw or heard it!?! I'll do a little digging and see if I can find it. That doesn't necesarrily mean that every post that listed an OSOTM song is invalid, because we do have the conflicting quote (surprise) about her writing from 87-95. But I just really kind of thought someone else must have had heard that....
anyone?
anyone?

I have heard her say OSOTM was a good album she was pleased with, and I've seen good reviews of it too. It's Street Angel I thought was her big disappointment. ???? Which I really love. It just could have been better, but the songs on it that I love, I *really* love. I don't think it was horrible by any means. I also have one good review of it in my Stevie scrap book. It was the only review I saw, actually. And it was a good one, pretty much. Although I heard it was written before Street Angel was once again changed before it was released, but not sure if that was true. If so, I was wondering if she had more sad songs on it (like The Tower, and some of her other sad sounding demos) or something, and then pulled a few of those really sad songs off because maybe they worried it was too depressing? I thought I heard her say something about that somewhere too, in an interview. That originally it was too sad, so they had to re-work it. But I can't think of where I heard it, so definitely don't quote me on it....

Okay...I am new at this (I just got a scanner, so I hope I do this right -posting this here....)...

I am horrible at computer stuff. Not sure what you mean to copy and paste it. I have done that in text before, but never with a scanned image....let me go try.....

Let's see....

Okay, I just went in and clicked on "copy" on my scan of the review. It is now taking a very long time to do that....I can hear little noises in the computer and it's still got the word "copy" highlighted.....now what?
