View Full Version : Favorite Fleetwood Mac song?

What is your ONE favorite Fleetwood Mac song. Here are the rules: Solo songs don't count, it has to be from the Buckingham Nicks years from 1975- 1987, and it can only be one song that you decide on.
I'll go first:

Probably The Chain, but by tomorrow I'll be leaning towards another choice like Rhiannon or Gypsy or Seven Wonders. (See how I inserted more picks with tremendous subtlety? )

"Think About Me"
It was actually a tie between "Over" and "Think About Me". If TAM was actually a Rumours outtake, why would they have left it out in place of Oh Daddy? I'm Chris' biggest fan, but there's been one song on every album I could pass on(unlike the Stevie fans). Mystified, Only Over You, Warm Ways, One More Lonely Night.....

Has to be Sisters of the Moon followed by Gold Dust Woman, Silver Springs, The Chain and after the stonking live performance, Eyes of the World.

It's the first song that comes to my mind everytime I'm asked this question. It's the first song that truly hit me in the gut.
BTW Homer, there are a few Stevie songs that I can and do pass over, especially post-Mirage era. ;)
But don't tell anybody!!

It's a three-way tie between Storms, the Dance version of Silver Springs, and Say Goodbye.
Storms is Stevie at the top of her game; beautiful vocals, personal and haunting lyrics that speak volumes, and one of the best arrangments of any song. Silver Springs is...you know, fabulous. And Say Goodbye is my favorite Lindsey song ever. That is one beautiful song.

Tough one...Eyes of the World and I'm So Afraid (live versions, 2003 and 1997 respectively) are amazing, as well as GYOW from the Dance (sorry, I'm Lindsey-biased). Overall, the live versions are much better than the studio recordings.
Storms. For today at least...

My "FM-related" favs. are "Go Insane (Live '97)", "Come (Live '03)"& "I'm So Afraid (Live '97)" - first two being my fav. two songs of all time.
However, if we're talking strictly, studio, "Fleetwood Mac", songs....then I'd say "Say Goodbye". (The live version is also incredible!) Rarely have I come across a song whose lyrics and music compliment eachother so perfectly.

It's just impossible to pick one favorite song. Out of the huge handful of ones I like best it's just impossible to single out one. Depending on the day it's a toss up between "Morning Rain" "Dissatisfied" "Prove Your Love" "Hold Me" or "She's Changing Me."

I don't understand all this stuff with all this rule-breaking and ****. It was supposed to be a favorite Rumours era track? Maybe I should have read the thread first.
Oh well, I'm still answering with "Morning Rain." As a matter of fact, I'm going to do a top 10 of my favorite FM songs and really piss off whoever posted this. Merry Christmas. :)
1. Morning Rain
2. Prove Your Love
3. She's Changing Me
4. Heroes Are Hard TO Find
5. Sisters Of The Moon
6. Night Watch
7. Future Games
8. Come A Little Bit Closer
9. Just Crazy Love
10. Angel (Stevie's Angel)
I'm gonna go a step further and mention my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song which is "Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans."
What the hell, I may as well mention my favorite member of Yes while I'm at it. Rick Wakeman.
CHRISTINE: You Make Loving Fun
STEVIE: Storms
LINDSEY: Big Love (acoustic)
OVERALL? You Make Loving Fun by far. It doesn't get more perfect for Christine or for me.

I don't think that there are any artists that I could say that I love every single song that they've ever recorded. I love mostly all of Christine's, Lindsey's and Stevie's songs, but to be honest, they've all recorded a lot of crap, for lack of a better word. There are songs that I like, but I don't love them. Like, for instance, Soul Drifter. I love the vocals on that song, but I don't like the music too much... too dreamy for me. Same goes for Bad Loser and Destiny Rules... On Bad Loser, I love Chris' vocals on there, but I'm not too into the spacey vibe going. As for DR, I hate the vocals on there, they're just too nasaly for me. What I'm trying to say is that I find it hard to believe that one could like every song by an artist without having some kind of gripe about some of the songs. If you do love all of 'em equally, that's awesome, but all I'm saying is that I think that it's kinda hard to like all of an artist's songs without not particularly liking something in it, etc. I'm probably making no sense right now, but it is quarter 'till 12:00 AM, so that probably has something to do with it

I think any fan of any artist should be allowed to "love" everything they've done. Anything that means something to someone, has value.
And if they don't, that's fine too.
Although I have made comments about how it sounds when someone seems to criticize more often than not... but hey, to each his own. If we all felt the exact same way about the exact same things, it would be a boring place.

I will admit I am the worst typist in the world and, therefore, readily butcher any and all rules of spelling. But, please state exactly what is incorrect with my grammar.
Your grammar, on the other hand, is incorrect in that your secend sentence is incomplete; the word "reinforcing" modifies nothing. One could imply you meant to say "Thanks for reinforcing [my thought]" or some other notion you apparently had. Moreover, if you meant my statement reinforced your opinion that all Stevie fans never critique her work, you are incorrect that my statement does that. My statement sought clarification, which you have not provided. Instead, you seemingly attacked me on a personal basis by insulting my allegedly "[n]ice" grammar. When anyone attacks a person in a discussion on an unrelated and in this case apparently false personal issue, the attacker has resulted to a tactic that makes no true point relevant to the topic being discussed. In other words, how does having poor grammar reinforce your original implication that no Stevie fan is willing to call any of her songs a "throw away" song as you are willing to admit you can with other members of Fleetwood Mac?
Also, Amen Christy and Johnny Stew

I guess I’ve never really encountered a rabid Stevie fan of that type but I do feel annoyed by those who belittle Fleetwood Mac’s contributions to her success.
Even though I’ve criticized Stevie myself (although not largely), I still haven’t received any verbal attacks. As Johnny Stew and some others have said: it’s not what you say that counts, it’s how you say it.
strandinthewind
12-27-2003, 01:36 PM
I can speak only for myself and say I am not like that. I call a spade a spade, which I fully realize is my opinion, which perhaps not everyone else shares. Moreover, just because I happen to like something someone else does not does not mean I am blindly defending Stevie or anyone else.
But, I certainly hope you realize when people read things like
". . . I'm Chris' biggest fan, but there's been one song on every album I could pass on (unlike the Stevie fans)," when Stevie is referred to as "their queen," when it is stated that "[t]hey seem very quick to attack anyone who criticizes their queen, no matter how small(or true) the comment (sic)," and when a false attack on allegedly incorrect grammar is substituted for any relevant argument on the topic at hand, it comes across as condescending whether you meant it to or not, which I suspect you did. So, it should come as no surprise to you when people rebuff your apparent attack on them for expressing their opinions, which is different then attacking you for attacking Stevie.
In sum, bash any FM song by any member you want, but do not imply someone is unreasonable for liking it or refusing to agree with you. Who are you to do that?

To hop into the Stones discussion: Of the GOS songs the aforementioned covers are not my favourites but I think "Gotta get away" and "She smiles sweetly" are quite O.K. If he had ever released GOS I think there shouldn`t have been more than 2 cover songs on it...

I never could stand Christines songs on Tusk and made my own copy of it just with Lindseys and Stevies songs long ago. The exception is "Think about me" which has a different sound than the others and fits in for me. I agree that her contributions on earlier albums are much better. "Mystery to me" or "Heroes..."- great albums that I really appreciate. That was her best time imo.

Hopefully, it will made the DVD of his PBS Soundstage performance because it was stellar. My two friends I was with and I were in awe with mouths on the floor. Hopefully, it will made the DVD of his PBS Soundstage performance because it was stellar. My two friends I was with and I were in awe with mouths on the floor. If I am not mistaken, he played a very old looking large white guitar for this one. I think Sulamith commented on it. I hope that helps
I Am Waiting was fab-o. Hopefully this will get released as part of the Soundstage performance.

(Stevie Nicks fans) seem very quick to attack anyone who criticizes their queen, no matter how small(or true) the comment. I'll admit that I'm a very vocal Nicks fan, but I have never once attacked anyone, no matter what opinion they may hold. I respect all opinions, but I don't have to agree with them.
If someone has made a broad statement that is open for debate, I'll most likely "argue" the other side. In most cases there is no "right" or "wrong," it's all a matter of perception or preference.
My biggest problem with your comments is that you've lumped all of Stevie's fans into one giant stereotype.
Perhaps I'm playing into what you expected, by responding... but why not stop to think which stereotypes you might be playing into, by bashing Stevie Nicks fans?
Everything is a two-way street.
In fact, I've often found it humourous that Stevie's seemingly biggest detractors are usually the ones who manage to steer every thread to some kind of conversation about her... by "firing the first shot," when they just as easily could have not mentioned Stevie at all in their response.
(By the way, the "Lindsey fans" and the "Christine fans" are quite good at defending their faves too, so the "Stevie fans" are not alone in that. It's a fan's right to support their favorite artist.)

There are PLENTY of Christine fans who love EVERY THING she has done. And Stevie fans are the MOST likely to critisise their favorite.

I consider myself a Christine fan, and a very "fanatic" in that... but I think I am able to criticize her bland, mediocre or just plain bad work... As I tend to think the very same way about Stevie or Lindsey fan... or about any fan of any artist. I don't believe either side has a tendency to cover it all up with a shadow of "it's all good, it's all great"... I have seen it all, but I would like to know what is the fact that motivates people to state that a certain group of fans is not able to criticize their favorite artist.
I've seriously have experienced that problem in a George Harrison-related forum when one can practically cannot say anything bad about his songs. And I'm a huge fan! But I'm also highly bothered by that fact... Oh well. I guess almost everyone with a minimum quota of intelligence would see that we're talking about real people here, and that they commit mistakes. And even if you don't think so, there has to be one work that you like MORE than other. If so, there is also one you like LESS than the first one... and there has to be a reason for that. The "I love them all equally" thing just does not make much sense to me, sorry to say.

Well, I am definitely a Christine fan, even more so than a Fleetwood Mac fan, I have to admit. While I don't love everything that she's ever done, I can honestly say there is nothing that she's ever done that I truly dislike. Some things I like better than others, but I can find something to like in everything that she's done. I also don't think that you can generalize among fans. I've seen some who love everything of Christine's and others who dislike some of what she's done. I'm sure it's probably the same with Stevie & Lindsey fans also.

AND - I liked her Tusk stuff, esp. "You'll Never Make me Cry" and "Over and Over," and LOVED her TITN stuff. But, her HAHTF contributions were just perfection in my book.
I love when people talk sense. :) She did some good stuff with the B/N lineup but she was at her peak through the entire Bob Welch period, and especially ruled on Heroes and Mystery To Me. I don't know, none of the stuff she did with Stevie and LIndsey holds a candle to "Morning Rain" "Dissatisfied" "Believe Me" "Just Crazy Love" "Why" "Prove Your Love..." etc. She just ruled on that old stuff.

As for me, I honestly think all of Christine's songs rock. Though I think her songs on Future Games were the best out of all of them. "Morning Rain" and "Show Me A Smile" are just incredible songs without flaw in my opinion. The woman is just amazing.

My favorite is BIG LOVE (acoustic)
Buckingham’s aggressive lightning-fast fingerpicking, dexterity and fretboard mastery make TWO beautiful succession of sounds, which compliment his wide-range, soulful lead vocal......
You hear three melodies here!........ That’s extremely difficult to achieve.

I just had to comment that your Worst FM songs mirror my list almost to a T--but-- I think "Oh Diane" could have worked had it been fleshed out more and I don't have a problem with "Everybody Finds Out." About your Best list: there are a few Stevie songs that I like better, such as "Sisters of the Moon" and "Storms," but I don't think Chris' "Little Lies" has held up at all. Just thought I'd share ...

I'm getting really confused...
From what I have seen on this board most Stevie fans constatly put down her clothes, voice, etc.
I am not one of them, but the majority of Stevie fans put her down a lot and don't hold her up on a pedestal (spelling?)!
And I love Stevie Nicks, as a musician, not as a Queen! That is just silly. I don't worship her at all. I just listen to her music- a lot!:blob2:

I think you're confusing good-natured discussions and light-hearted criticisms for put downs, doll.
We all love Stevie here, some to a lesser degree than others, but that doesn't mean that we love every damn thing about her. Even Johnny dislikes the vocals on the SA outtake of If You Were My Love. ;) If we did love every damn thing, it would be a pretty boring place and I doubt many people would post here.
It would be ridiculous for anyone, even someone who loves every single thing Stevie does, to put her on a pedestal. It's pretty inane, IMO.

Well that was what I meant, I just couldn't spell the word criticism, so I opted to use "put-downs". I know that people are good natured in what they say, I'm just a bad speller.

I can't do it! Ok, If I were left stranded on a deserted island, and could only have one song to listen to,and even though Lindsey is my favorite, I would have to go with Sara. (that has to be a run on sentence) But, I would need headphones, because listening to that song on headphones is heaven.
Ok if I were stranded on a deserted island, the album I would pick would without a doubtwould be Tusk. just my two cents

Lindsey: NGBA
Stevie: GDW
Chris: everything she's ever done is worthy of note.
Stevie and Lindsey have had more bombs than Chris I think. JMHO.

As for DR, I hate the vocals on there, they're just too nasaly for me.
yeah, and Silver Girl still sucks. There are no two ways about it.

BUT...I'd guess Storms is my favorite song :)

Right now, its Fireflies... but probably soon so change. The Chain is a close second. I think it just shows all their talent in one really greatly writen song. Espeically that bass line... gives me shivers. :D
