That's a good one, too. I think she rocked on If You Ever Did Believe, also. At first I thought Sheryl Crow was singing the high background parts, but when I saw the video, it was Stevie. :)

My friends are usually surprised to learn that Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) & Rhiannon (The Dance) are even sung by the same person, given how much Stevie's voice has matured. I like the whole spectrum for different reasons... in the early days it was pure & beautiful; in the early/mid 80s she had the smoke-and-whisky thing going on (like in I Sing For The Things-- I think it's gorgeous, but I know a lot of people hate that), and now her voice has a depth and warmth to it that is very heavy, very comforting.

Hmmm-way too many too list but the first few that come to mind:

SARA-beautiful perfect vocal with the slight echoey effect-sums up all that was perfect with the sound of the Mac at that time

Whenever I Call You Friend- a very spirited vocal, reaching and sustaining high notes (and sounding very natural at it too!) that I don't think she had done before or since. Also incredible clarity in her vocal and just the right amount of Eartha Kitt growling in parts.

Wild Heart-I think it was the RS review for The Wild Heart where they said (about the title song) something like "her voice is not a perfect instrument technically but when she cranks it up she can wail with the best of the blues mamas" and belt it out she does, a la Janis, in parts of that "epic" song. Gawd I remember playing that song so loud on the big clunky headphones in high school and just thinking how incredible and INTENSE it was. Still is!

I love the chorus but hate the vocal on the "undercover music lover" lines, and I'm usually a fan of the RaspaLittle voice. Also, IMO it's out of place on Enchanted: It belongs on Disc 2, and The Highwayman belongs on Disc 1.

Sleeping Angel has got to be one of her best vocals ever. And Lindsey had nothing to do with it. Jimmy I. probably didn't like it too much either since it was left off Bella Donna.

Somebody Stand By Me and Twister (with LB) are also great.

Sara is stupendous, as is Sisters of the Moon.

Thrown Down is noteworthy from her latest work, and so is Sorcerer from TISL.

IMO, some of her worst vocals are the SA title track and Thousand Days.

I've always thought that the studio version of Silver Springs was her best, especially the layers of vocals at the end. Many times the best vocals of her early tracks are layered at the fade of the song. There are several different versions of SS but the original 45 version is the I like the best. Followed closely behind are Storms, Angel (alternate take), and the demo of The Chain.

Stevie's voice was in its peak form 1980-1982. Most anything from those years is a golden vocal. But here are a few that stand out IMHO.

Sleeping Angel
Gypsy - the bridge is not only Fleetwood Mac's best bridge but one of the best vocal bridges of any song ever. It builds and builds and she sings with such passion
Sable of Blonde
Leather and Lace - she has such range on this song
Nothing Ever Changes - she is practically yelling but still sounds great
That's Alright - God she is so good here
Midnight Wind is definitely golden

and my vote for #1
Gate and Garden - I hate the song (always did) but I see why they included it on the album. Roy's piano and her singing. She does the full range hitting so high and delicate yet when the chorus kicks in, its vintage Stevie. I wish I liked this song more but I dont like it but I do appreciate her awesome vocal. I believe that is why it was picked over other gems she had at the time. Her singing with Roy's playing does make a tremendous piece.

Great point on Gate and Garden MacMan- It is definitely her best solo album vocal- just so pure, amazing and wonderful- too bad she didn't spend just a bit more time on the lyrics- they just crash and burn after the passion goes to the red rose, awesome and then too much repeating of do I love you, well I always did- how about some of the lost lyrics of the chain demo? Maybe they could have fit the song somehow?

Here is where I get off this train when cokey vocal RAL songs start to get added or fairly recent live tracks. No way. You may like the performance but no way is her voice the same as it was 40 years ago. We are talking vocals and not performances. I thought she did a great job with her 24K Gold tour but as good as the performances were, vocals not that great.

One absolute gem I forgot that is definitely a top vocal is the live Landslide from the White Album box set. She just soars vocally and the difference between the modern day live Landslides and that performance is night and day, although I give her credit for how she uses what is left of her once incredible voice.

As far as live performances go, her first solo concert tour 1981 she was game on. She was vocal perfection on every song. The next tour she started to get a little raspy and lost concentration on her craft.

If I wanted to try to prove to a non-fan that Stevie at her prime was a terrific vocalist... I would start with:

Silver Springs,
Beautiful Child,
Edge of Seventeen,
Sable on Blonde.

Throw in Rhiannon as well surely.

We're talking favorite vocals. Not her vocal range. At least I am. It's how she uses her voice and executes the song to stir emotions in me.
I agree but her voice fell flat around 1997. Besides her range going so did any power and execution of that voice. Street Angel was the last year of the raspy yet good voice and it was on its last legs then. IMHO there all the best vocals (not necessarily range) happened from 1980-1983 (prior to the Wild Heart tour). She had it all...range, power, execution and emotion. Its hard to convey emotion when singing so flat.

I don't think she was singing flatly in any of the songs I listed as MY favorite Stevie vocals. Even in her heyday she had moments of fragility and weakness from overuse or not taking care of herself. When she sang Landslide on the Live album, her voice sounded wrecked and as if she could barely make it through the song. Yet I found that to be an inspiring vocal. The vulnerability in her voice led to the poignancy of the song. We all have different likes and dislikes. There is not set standard for what makes it anyone's favorite or best vocal. These are all individual opinions. And I'm sticking to mine. :)

It's very difficult to pick favorites but I guess I'd say:

1. Trouble In Shangri-La (killer chorus)
2. Italian Summer (love the ending)
3. Silver Springs from 'The Dance' ("never get away", classic moment)
4. Rooms On Fire ("that she could sense for miles!")
5. Moonlight (all of it)
6. Everybody Loves You (both bridges are amazing)
7. Dreams
8. The Chain
9. Magnet & Steel (she makes that backing vocal chorus)
10. Beautiful Child (the sustained notes at the end in particular)
