Stevie Nicks Wins in a 'Landslide' at BMI Country Awards; Special Tribute Honors Dolly Parton as BMI ICON

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--11/05/2003--Performing rights organization BMI presented its Country Awards last night (11/4), recognizing the songwriters and publishers of the past year's 50 most performed country songs. Ultimate honors went to the Stevie Nicks-penned "Landslide" as Song of the Year; to Jeffrey Steele as Songwriter of the Year; and to Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville as Publisher of the Year. A highlight of the evening was the surprise tribute to Dolly Parton, who was honored as a BMI ICON. The BMI Country Awards -- country music's oldest awards celebration -- were hosted by President & CEO Frances W. Preston and Vice President Paul Corbin at the company's Music Row offices. Visit bmi.com/country for more info on country music at BMI.

"Landslide" earned songwriter Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac the 35th Robert J. Burton Award as Most Performed Country Song of the Year. This distinction is given to the song tallying the most feature US broadcast performances during the eligibility period. Nicks is also publisher of the song, through her company Welsh Witch Music. Included on the Dixie Chicks' platinum Monument album Home, "Landslide" was a Country, Adult Top 40, Hot 100 and AC Billboard charts smash.

Jeffrey Steele claimed the title of Songwriter of the Year by placing four songs on the list of 50: "Chrome" (Trace Adkins), "The Cowboy In Me" (2nd Award) (Tim McGraw), "My Town" (Montgomery Gentry) and "These Days" (Rascal Flatts).

Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville claimed BMI Country Publisher of the Year by accumulating the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. President & CEO Donna Hilley accepted on behalf of the publisher, which contributed 12 songs on the most-performed list (through its companies Sony/ATV Tree and Sony/ATV Acuff Rose).

Dolly Parton was saluted as a BMI ICON for her "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." Parton's career helped revolutionize the world of country music for women and, through her songwriting, performing, film & television projects and entrepreneurial ventures, has made her one of the most successful and recognizable artists in history.

She has scored with more than 100 charting songs -- including 24 #1s -- and has collected 37 BMI Country and Pop Awards for such classics as "I Will Always Love You," "9 To 5," "Jolene," "Two Doors Down," "To Daddy," "Here You Come Again" and "Love Is Like A Butterfly." A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame since 1999, she is nominated as Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2003 CMA Awards.

Of the 64 songwriters recognized, nine joined Steele as multiple winners: Tony Martin and Tom Shapiro with three songs each; Al Anderson, Toby Keith, David Lee, Lee Thomas Miller, Mark Nesler, Tia Sillers and Troy Verges with two each.

BMI's Citation of Achievement awards are given annually in recognition of popularity in the field of country music, as measured by feature broadcast performances on American radio and television; the 2003 Country Awards eligibility period ran April 1, 2002 through March 31, 2003.

BMI, founded in 1939, is an American performing rights organization that represents more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music. Through its music performance and reciprocal agreements, it grants businesses and media access to its repertoire of approximately 4.5 million musical works from around the world.

A complete list of 2003 BMI Country Award winners will be posted on bmi.com. High-resolution photos will also be available for downloading to registered users only at press.bmi.com.

Stevie is in good company with Miss Dolly. I'm sure Stevie is thrilled to have won. Too bad she couldn't be there.

Congratulations, Stevie!!! What a great year for "Landslide," and for her fans who were *finally* given the truth this year about who/what the song is really about. :)

Yay Landslide!!! I guess she missed the awards since she's gone to Germany already...

I can only imagine how proud Stevie must be in getting this award. I'd say it's probably the most important recognition she could get...an honor going to a song she wrote. She always wanted to be remembered most for her songwriting, and it looks like it's finally coming around. SWEET!!! :)

My pleasure in sharing the information...that's what it's all about.

Yeah, Dolly rocks big time, she's one of the FEW country artists I will even listen to. I must admit I'm kind of shocked about Stevie receiving an award from something like this. You'd think these people would be trying to burn her alive cause they think she's a witch or something.

A big, hearty congratulations to Stevie on this recognition! I'm sure she feels very honored.

It's actually always surprised me that Stevie hasn't done an all-out country album. 'Bella Donna' was definitely country-tinged... as have been several of her songs throughout the years... so I don't think it would be a huge leap for her to do a traditional country album.

Maybe she and Sheryl Crow will do something along those lines at some point down the road. :)

Actually I had a friend of mine listen to Stevie's "Sunday Kind Of Love" and then I played her "At Last" and she was like "Wow she sounds great singing those types of songs". And this girl is in no way a fan of standards. Although I would hate to see Stevie jump on the rock star doing standards routine but she definately works those songs.

Might be interesting to hear her do an album of torch-songs though (like "At Last" and "Sunday Kind Of Love"), but everyone seems to be doing that these days.

Ok I think we should just hope for a country-ish album from Stevie and a few more Stormy Weather tunes. And of course more rock and roll. Ditch the gospel notions. Of course Sheryl could lend a hand. I'm seeing a lot of her on CMT lately. That all too cool "Picture" song she did with Kid Rock and a cover of Rod Stewart's "The First Cut Is The Deepest" gets airplay there. Actually I'm seeing a lot more pop/rock stars on CMT; John Mellencamp and The Eagles to name a few. There seems to be less of a divide between country and pop/rock these days. :)

I'm not a big fan of country, though I don't mind the genre... and I think Stevie could make a really kickass country album.

Maybe a duet with Keith Urban?
(Ok, I admit I just wanna see him in the video!) ;)

I don't know if your serious, but in the 80's Al concocted a scheme in which he made a 15 year old girl rub **** and dirt all over her body and boldly lied saying 2 NYPD officers did it. And then it was revealed that it was a scam.:distress:
