View Full Version : Stevie Nicks is gross?

I just had the most horrible day at school. I am only in the tenth grade, so everyone at my school listens to rap and I am the only one who listens to good music. So the conversation of music came up and this girl started talking about rap stars and I said, "Stevie Nicks is so much better, if you ask me".
Then the girl asked who she was and someone else butted in with, "some 50-year-old lady".
Then the girl had the nerve to say and I quote: "That's gross!"
Can you beleive it???? I was speachless and then when I was over the shock of what had just been said I began to argue the fact that a person's age has nothing to do with how talented they are. Within ten second the bell rang and the girl left!
I know I sound weird getting so offended over this, but can anyone relate? Maybe someone else who is a younger fan? It is just so hard because I have no one who will talk to me for hours about Fleetwood Mac, when that is what I want to chat about half the time.
And the thing is, I am trying to get into other music but everytime I buy a record by a different artist, I listen to it a few times and go back to my FM stuff. Does this happen to anyone else? It is like, FM is so good there is no point in wasting my time listening to mediocre music....
Even the teachers at my school don't appreciate FM. Like, I wanted to do a report on Stevie and then my teacher said, "No it has to be someone who changed the world". I argued with my teacher forever to no avail.
What is wrong with the world? How is it that I can love FM music with such passion and others don't even know who they are?

There are obviously millions who don't agree with this girl. The Mac has been playing to mostly sold out concerts for the past 5 months with crowds of 15,000-20,000 or more. Everyone at the concerts seems to rave over how good she looks... so you've got a teenage bimbo who hasn't stopped to think that she'll one day be 50 ;) .

Yes ~ from the impression I get, this girl would probably 'freak' and be 'grossed out' at the thought of being seen at the mall with her own parents so I wouldn't waste too much time worrying about her epithets.

I wouldn't worry too much about the girl's opinion...that's all it is...just an opinion and apparently she, unfortunately, seems to be very close-minded rather than open to new tastes...but you really can't blame her...she's was 15 years old...and very impressionable (most young girls are...you guys have it so easy  )...and right now her only concern is what is "cool" in the eyes of others...and as hard as that may seem, it's important to her.
Instead, take pride in the fact that YOU are wiser than your years and seem to have a very open mind and are open to things not considered 'the norm' and have the confidence to do just that.
And if I may...give a bit of advice...there are MANY great artists out there...including Fleetwood Mac...Open up a bit and explore...it's fine to 'always go back to Fleetwood Mac'...I find myself doing that too from time to time, but there's just SO much great music out there...even if you listen to those who've influenced FM, you'll find some great stuff. You've got nothing to lose and so much knowledge to gain:nod:

Kids in school are lame, and teachers even worse in their own ways, so I would suggest not talking to any of them. I didn't, and it was for the better.
I made a couple friends who were into music and understood me, and stuck to those few. I hung with the band nerds, and realized that the reason nobody likes the nerds is because they're too smart to keep up with. And usually, nerds have better senses of humor. Sicker. :D A couple of my best friends were the kids who didn't fit in anywhere, the artsy wack type, and to this day my one best friend from school is still my best friend 5 years after graduation. The potheads always knew where to get good weed and they liked Pink Floyd and other good music. Stereotypes about high school kids really are true 100%.
But anyways, just don't associate with those dumbasses. Who cares if they can't appreciate Stevie Nicks because she's old? That should be enough reason not to care what they think. If you have the slightest shred of good musical taste you probably won't fit with many people at school. Kids of the high school level only care about **** that doesn't matter, like ****ty music, bad clothes and following trends.

Oh, I was soooo in your shoes in 1983 when I was in 10th grade. Different time, same story. I thought I was the only one in the world who liked FM. That was the days before the internet, so I didn't have any idea there were so many Mac-ers out there. I loved FM and everybody in those days liked the mainstream stuff that was going on. Rap was just starting, break-dancing was big. (gag). I felt so alone when it came to music. Nobody really gave me a hard time, I just chose not to talk about FM to the kids in school because they didn't get it. Some kids got into classic rock like Led Zep, (my other fav), so I more related to them. Hang in there, if they don't get it, it's their loss.

Save the girl's quote & share it with her at your thirtieth high school reunion, when she's about to turn fifty. Congratulate her on her upcoming grossness. Then askif she's half the success Stevie was at that age.

This thread kind of reminds me of when I was in 10th grade and all everyone talked about was this band whose LP was stuck in the number one slot for months .I think they were called Fleetwood Mac?

diamondsnake-
I go through the same thing all the time at school ! (I'm in 10th grade) When someone asks me what kind of bands I like, and I say something like, "Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc..., people usually look at me like I'm growing a second head and say something really intelligent like "Aren't they old?" or "They suck! I just ignore them, or sometimes say something equally insulting, and then not speak with them for a while. They obviously don't know jack **** about good music, so don't waste your time listening to their opinions on it. Those kind of people are one of the reasons I come here so often- so that I can talk to people who share my interests.

I would bet you anything that if she heard the FM songs she would probably know a few of them and actually like them. Esp if she heard Gypsy (almost evey girl I knew loved that song but didn't have a clue who it was by).
In 10th grade I was Beatle crazy (this was in the later 90's), so no I didn't relate at all to the bubble gum bands of the time, instead I was listening to music by a group that had broken up 25 yrs ago.
In college now and I love the Mac and a few ppl relate, but not many.
Oh and Grammer school was all Madonna, and Jefferson Starship not Paula Abdul so I was not really "in" there either, of couse part of that was that my peers were not allowed to listen to Madonna, go figure.
Best advice, don't worry, once your out of high school no one cares if the ppl you listen to are old or not.
Ask the girl what she thinks of the Beatles or Madonna or the Rolling Stones who in two of those cases are older the Stevie, bet she says they are alright;)

Hi, my name is Shamus, and I am a freshman in high school. I know EXACTLY what you are talking about, but don't let it get to ya. Last year, in middle school, I felt the same way about the world, but there ARE people...yes in your school...that like older music. It is not THAT rare. Believe me, in my town of 2500 people, there were at least two in my grade that like Fleetwood Mac, Stevie, or older music and I connected with them so well even if they didn't have the most friends in school. Was I lucky? Yes. But understand that there are so many people out there who like "good" music and most are people you never think would. Just look, enjoy the music, and you will find people that you can share your musical expressions with. (Does your school have a band? That's where I know all the kids that like my kinda music.) If not, just keep posting, there's a bunch of kids our age on here and on pther boards across the net.

Same story for me...back in 1987. When I was a senior in high school, I became a major fan of Fleetwood Mac's...and was teased for it. I worked in a record store at that time and played a lot of Stevie and the Mac...and was teased for it. I was also teased for liking Madonna...and hell, the 80s was when she was truly "in." Go figure.
But what I've come to realize is --- no matter what it is that people "don't get" or have "problems" with -- it must be a good thing to get such a strong reaction. ;) [at least that's my theory w/Stevie and Fleetwood Mac!]

There must be something about me, because although I do have moments where I get "aren't they dead," blah blah blah, a lot of times it was my difference in taste of music that attracted people (NOT sexually for those with their minds in the gutter). Of course, I was fortunate enough to be in 10th grade and JUST getting into Fleetwood Mac when The Dance came out and everyone was kind of getting into them all over again. But I can specifically remember in 12th grade, one of the more popular girls who didn't have much to say to me until around 12th grade came looking for me because she wanted to get some FM songs on a cd and wanted to know the tracklist for The Dance (which I of course knew off by heart). What I find works best is to just stick to your opinion, but don't really argue it and DON'T, above all DON'T try to shove that opinion in other people's faces. If there's one thing Stevie's really correct about, it's the idea that people are attracted to mystery. You'll be surprised how people will end up coming to you to talk about it. Again, let them all know you're a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, but never say why (on your own). I don't know what to say if that doesn't work...it worked for me. :wavey:

A think a great many of us have gotten the Fleetwood WHO? treatment:D I know I have. Until I found the Ledge at the Penguin in fact it was the most common response I got to liking Fleetwood Mac.
Luckily for me Marty set up the Ledge and since 1997 I've had plenty of people to talk to about Fleetwood Mac!
Frankly I am so happy some of you younger folks like FM-it will keep the music from dying as it might otherwise. It has so little in common with this noise they call music these days:laugh: that it would never be plyed at all if some young people didn't like it.

I was 16 when I started getting into the Mac... I guess that would make it 1993, and was in the 9th or 10th grade. (And in 1993, there was absolutely nothing popular about Fleetwood Mac or Stevie!) It's funny how some people react to it. I had a friend who was a year younger then me, and she really got into it with me. We absolutely loved it! But I do remember when we were in my car with another friend of mine, listening to Leather and Lace, and when Henley started singing "you in the moonlight...." my other friend was like "oh brother, give me a break...." I thought it was funny. The thing about it is, it was her boyfriend who got me into the Mac!
Till this day she still thinks I'm a goober!
Oh well, you should hear some of the **** she listens to!

I remember when I first got into the Mac when I was 11, most kids my age were not into music or they liked the bubble gum teen idol stuff. Then as the years went on, I encountered people who didn't know who the band was, or thought Lindsey was the girl and Stevie the guy, or that because of their refined studio work that radio played that they weren't rockin' enough to be cool. And in the late 80's most kids around me were into big hair bands and once again, bubble gum pop stuff and I continued to carry my Mac candle burning brightly to this day. I follow them still as they continue to rock my world as I settle into my early 30's.

PPPPFFFTTTT on the people who think they are too old or whatever. They can go listen to WHATEVER they want and zip it.
I don't get why people can't just love who they love and leave other people alone. :distress:
Just know that FM fans are the cool people. ;)

And I'll add that while I want what's best for the band, I'd hate it if every teenybopper/dipsh*t were into FM because it was the trendy thing. People who are into this band have a sense of commitment and passion. We don't need the average joes.

well, im 26, and im out of school...but i can relate to what youre saying. i mostly listen to metal, or heavy rock-and its hard enough to find other people that listen to that that i can talk with, not to mention that i LOVE stevie/fleetwood mac, & that just reeeally throws em for a loop, but you know ive really just given up caring what other people say about what i listen to...who cares? its not YOUR fault that everyone else had bad taste!
Hi Chris!
What can I say. People are stupid. I'm 15 too, and while no one at my school has refered to Stevie as "gross" they don't appreciate or understand her or Fleetwood Mac. Most people at my school listen to rap, which (I'm sorry if I offend anyone) I absolutely hate. In my humble opinion it's not even music. But what can we do. People are going to be the way they're going to be. It took me a while in my life to become confident in who I am and what I like, but now I am, and I don't care what people think. That doesn't mean they don't tell me what they think, but it doesn't really bother me. I've learned that true friends will accept you, quirks and all.
I can't believe your teacher said "it has to be someone who changed the world". Music is such a big part of life and Stevie and FM and a big part of the history of music. I mean, everyone has heard Dreams and GYOW whether they realize they're by FM or not.
Anyways...good luck at school. People are stupid.

I know exactly what you mean. I can not express how much I hate rap "music". I sometimes tell people how I feel about rap music, so I guess I can't really blame them for telling me how they feel about FM, it is just that they have never even given FM a chance.
I know what you mean about becoming comfortable with yourself also. I used to never tell people about things like FM, but this year (10th grade) I have realized that I should just be who I am. I mean, I am constantly dressed in a fleetwood mac shirt and I love it and things like that! And it has helped me so much because I feel like I fit in at school so much more now then when I actually tried to not be myself.
I just wish that there was one other FM fanatic at our school because I just want to talk about them with someone one time! I mean it is nice to have conversations online, but it is not the same as talking to someone face to face...
By the way, I started this thread about a week ago and since then I ordered some new FM shirts online. I wore one yesterday and received nothing but positive comments, not only from teachers who new who they were but a few students, also. So maybe the world isn't as bad as I think!

What the person said about Stevie Nicks was done in VERY VERY poor taste. Discussing music can be a sensitive topic and I do remember being hurt by others making a negative comment about an artist that I liked. The music we listen to can be very personal to each of us because it's what we identify with. It may be hard for someone who doesn't like a particular band or style of music to understand what it might mean to those who do. I like some of the Big Band music of the 1930s and 40s and I imagine it might be a mild form of torture for someone else to listen to it. I realize that someone else would'nt like it or hear it how I do...and that's ok. At the same time, I could only hope that someone else would show respect for me and how they might voice their comments about it.
Here I am a Fleetwood Mac fan and I did'nt start listening to them until I was 28. I was in 12th grade when Tango came out and though I was aware of it and of Fleetwood Mac...I was more focused on a different band and not really paying attention to them. It took me awhile and I'm thrilled that I did discovered their music and to share the same admiration that many many fans do. Proud to be a fan!
