A few questions...
First of all, who thinks Fleetwood Mac will tour again here in the States next year?
Also, do you think FM is seriously going to have to take a look at revamping the set list if they do this?
My own thoughts... I hope they tour here again next year but PLEASE no sheds. The ticket prices will be outrageous and I much prefer to see them indoors.
I also think that if they want the masses to keep coming out, not just the diehards like ourselves, that they are going to have to dust off some of the long forgotten gems. I wouldn't mind hearing more of Tusk, Mirage, Tango (I know it was a painful period but it's behind them now) and Say You Will. Also, I think a Buckingham Nicks song or two would kill and not necessarily Don't Let Me Down Again. I also wouldn't mind if Lindsey gave Big Love a rest for a while or plugged it in. It's not like they don't have a big enough catalog. Just my .02

Stevie said in an interview that they are going to tour the States again next year and they are going to play sheds. I think she might have mentioned changing the set list too.

You and I have discussed this before but I'm with you on them touring arenas instead of sheds. In 1997 when they toured, they were at the E-Centre if memory serves and were actually not at the First Union Spectrum on the Center. Ticket prices were incredibly steep and that is why I was unable to go. I don't like that place for ANY concert let alone Fleetwood Mac. The sound gets lost in there and if you're not in the pit or the first few rows behind the pit, they look like peanuts onstage. It will be MUCH harder to get tickets in the pit for these shows IMO. Then again, as I said, I'll take Fleetwood Mac anywhere I can, anytime I can  :D

They'll never change that goddam setlist. Never.
They could pack in Dreams, Big Love, Rhiannon, and Don't Stop and I'd be a happy camper. Anyways, if they introduced something new or rare, they'd drop it after a day or two. after all, this is FM! FM always does the exact opposite of what is sensical, so they'll play sheds.
Lindsey will give the same exact speeches and John will finally fall asleep from boredom and disdain.

gldstwmn i think you got it wrong a bit, i think the reason they perform this cliche' setlist is for all those casual/light fans, all those who are not familiar with the entire mac catalogue.
i was talking to an old friend last night who's about to attend one of the london concerts with me, and she's so thrilled about all those classic (aka overkilled) songs which for me are some great candidates for a bathroom break.

That's right. The band doesn't have to challenge itself in any way when they do their gigs this way. The most people that go to the concert are casual fans anyway. That's where their main target group is. Whereas at Lindsey's Soundstage performance it was known beforehand that only the hardcores will be attending.
Every single concert I went to this year, I was standing by some boor who just complained and complained about the songs they didn't know. I heard so many complaints mostly during the Say Goodbye, WTWCT, and Beautiful Child set. "When are they going to play some hits," "This is boring." blah blah. Unfortunately, they have to play to the casual fan. So I think they will add some new ones and drop some, but overall they are still going to play the same songs.

Remember Lindsey's quote? They still want to hear the same songs that they were playing while they were f*&^$#g in the backseat of a car in the 70s....it was something to that effect. People want the old stuff. We fans who own the new album and really enjoy the new songs are a rarity. I don't know about where any of you live but here, they never really gave SYW and Peacekeeper (or Peacemaker and Pacemaker and one DJ accidently said..lol) much airtime at all.
They have to play to the casual fan, but for goodness sakes do they HAVE to do the whole "The Chain, Dreams...Stand Back, Go Your Own Way, Don't Stop" setlist in THAT order?
They have opened with The Chain and closed with GYOW for so long that they probably couldn't start or end a concert any other way. Throw everybody off and open up with Tusk or Rhiannon. I don't know, just some suggestions to change this set around a bit...it's got some great songs in it, the one's people expect to hear, some new songs, a rare oldie (BC)...but the order is just stale at this point.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to have some better introductions. Lindsey's great, but a simple "This is the first single from the new album and it's called Peacekeeper" would suffice....the long boring intros which never change are kind of annoying at this point.

That's the thing though, they still have plenty of hits to play. Monday Morning, Blue Letter, I Don't Want To Know, Sara, Sisters of The Moon, Not That Funny, That's All For Everyone, Seven Wonders... I mean, cripes there are 18 songs on Tusk. They're playing 2. And while I know there were a lot of hard feelings about OOTC, I wish he would play something from it. surely no one's upset about that anymore. JMO.

I loved it in Boston where pretty much everyone knew the words to every damn song. You should have heard the place during Come, it exploded and screamed along with him. I wish every concert could be like that. It's rare for a new song to get the most accliam, which is a damn shame.
I understand the reasoning that they need the stuff for the casual fan, but christ, reward the die-hards a bit more, ya know? Throw in Storms or Tango in the Night or Oh Diane or Red Rover or Murrow or Sisters of the moon or Crystal or FROZEN LOVE.

Oh, I agree. They play for the lite fan. They are trying to reach a broad spectrum. I can completely see the justification of ANY setlist in Europe because they haven't played there in so long. I just think that if they are going to come around again next year, they have to seriously think about mixing it up. Of course, we have to take into account the Christine factor, i.e. a third of their catalog can't be played becasue she's no longer there.

Unfortunately, I remember reading somewhere Stevie saying the one song she never gets tired of singing is Dreams. Plus it is FM's only number one hit, so I don't think it will ever leave the setlist. And GYOW was a top 10 hit, so it will be around forever, too.
I would like to see them drop Gypsy. I love the song but I really don't think Stevie does it justice in the lower register. I was just listening to a St. Louis boot this morning and I just don't like how she performs it any longer. I'm kind of over Landslide too, but I'm sure it's never going anywhere.

.
I think they're going to tour in the spring. As for playing sheds I just read an article somewhere that artists make a lot more money playing sheds. This confused me because I thought that sheds were generally smaller than arenas, but it seems the profit is larger. I'll try to dig up the quote I read.
I think there's a chance they might change a few songs in the setlist but I think it will be more along the lines of bringing back other hits that people know. It's amazing the amount of people who go to a concert to either yak with a friend or get drunk. Someone should start a thread about the strangest and most annoying things they saw at this year's concerts. I sure have a list of my own and too many drunks that ruined some of my shows.
Maybe we can have a list of song suggestions for the Drunk Fan;)

Even though Lindsey only played for a few hundred fans at his Soundstage, the idea would be to appeal to as many fans as possible who might know his work through Fleetwood Mac since Soundstage wants to appeal to as large an audience as possible when it airs. I think playing an updated version of Trouble would sound familiar since it was a hit that he had as a solo artist and it's that type of tune. I forgot the rest of the setlist that was posted, but Go Insane, GYOW, NGBA also appeal to the FM audience.

Over and OUT :)
I'm especially tired of the canned 'shoulder tapping' and other 'spontaneous' moments in this song that they perform exactly the same every single night, but the audience clearly loves it. For some reason it bugs me more on this song than any of the other 'spontaneous repetitive moments' they bring to life every night.

As for the setlist - "Dreams" is their biggest hit. They simply HAVE to have it in there if they want to give the majority of the audience their money's worth (although I could see it go). If you really, really love a song, you don't care how many times it's played, you want to hear it again, lol. For me, it's "I'm So Afraid."
Now, that doesn't mean I don't think they can't put back in "Running Through the Garden." If they change just that one little thing, I will be ecstatic. :)

It is truly amazing...and rude. I was at the Boston concert and the woman in front of me spent most of the time talking to her boyfriend, only giving the show casual attention. It was distracting to see someone who looked like she could care less where she was. Concert tickets are so criminally expensive now, I can't understand how anyone who wasn't fully into the show would go anyway.

The irony of it all is how Lindsey talks ad-nasuem about spontenaity and freedom of choice." Yet there is nothing spontaneous about their show (and his rambles) and apparently there is no freedom of choice when it comes to their set list.
I think of bands like REM or solo artists like Neil Finn. They take chances, play what they want to play, say what they want to say. There is truly spontaneity in their interaction with their audiences. No one leaves their shows mad that they didn't here a particular "hit." They enjoy the show for what it is.
Unfortunately, the masses expect Fleetwood Mac to be a juke box. And in someways, that is what their live show is. It's less like an inspirted rock and roll concert and more like a line-for-line Broadway show.
Your suggestions to shake it up are well taken. I always thought Blue Letter would be a great show opener. If they feel they must play that same group of songs "over and over," at least change the damn order! Or for some of their more over-exposed, over-played songs -- retool them for a fresh perspective ala Say You Love Me from The Dance. And think about digging into their catalog of never/rarely performed songs...

Below is a copy of a list I have of many of the Major US Amphitheatres. As you can see the idea that they are smaller than arenas is simply not true. Remember many have lawn seating that can make up 50-70% of there seating capacity. Arenas lose some of their seating capacity due to the back of stage seats not being sold. Sheds are more profitable for bands. Their venue costs are less. Less overhead associated with the shed, less rigging needs to be done. Bands usually do not use as elaborate lighting, or stage sets. More capacity, less the cost! The trade offs are acoustics, sightlines, especially on the lawn, lighting issues, weather. They are only appox 45 major act outdoor ampitheatres in the country. Some in the same martket. A Shed tour, often a few arenas end up thrown in due to scheduling, availability, etc., can criss cross the country in 2 months or so.

Thanks for all that great information, John. Is it possible to play a larger mixture of both sheds and arenas on one tour? I think Stevie was the only one who specifically mentioned sheds, but I could be wrong.
I would guess repeated airings of the PBS special and the release of a DVD will help sell the third leg. I think the majority of people who attend these shows are not as concerned about them changing or adding 3 different songs to the set list.

In theory, they could play 20 sheds/smaller venues and call it a third leg of the tour. I just want to see them one more time. Then again, I always say that ;)
John Run
10-20-2003, 08:35 PM
Sure a band could play both and often do. A number of markets do not have viable outdoor venues so it is often done. Also scheduling issues make bands alternate. Fleetwood Mac played a few on this tour. DTE, White River, Jones Beach. For a band like Fleetwood Mac it is much easier to go from one to another because they use limited staging, lights, lasers, visuals. They chose arenas because of the greater control over acoustic values, etc. They played a number of sheds on the Dance tour. That tour had even less staging and visual effects.
A shed show would probably lack some of the stage projection screens they have been using, but other than that it would be identical. Sound could vary a bit.
I think they will hit the road next May or June and tour for two months hitting mostly sheds. Because of the reduced costs, bands don't need to sell out. Crowds of 10k will make a profit for Fleetwood Mac. Playing 30 shed dates would gross at min 27-30 million more for the tour. 40 shed dates with great crowds could push that number to 50 million. Putting 2-8 million dollars into each band members pocket. Yeah, they will hit the sheds.....
strandinthewind
10-20-2003, 08:54 PM
Plus, not all sheds are that large. Some are only 5,000 tp 7,000 or less, which I think FM surely could sell out even without a new record. I say this because I see bands like R.E.M. do it every Summer here in Atlanta. AND one of the sheds here has season ticket holders so the event is somewhat presold, etc.

A lot of them do that, which is one of the reasons I don't want to see FM in a shed. The acoustics usually suck. and with the season ticket holder deal, most of us would end up sitting left, right and back or worse on the damn grass-for probably like $75. Ugh.:(

Exactly.
Fleetwood Mac is one of the most popular and successful band in history, and that is only being confirmed yet again. I mean, look at how well the album sold and where it debuted on the chart; that is *very* impressive. Dollars to doughnuts, if the Stones or The Who released a new album, it wouldn't be nearly as successful (Jagger's last album will attest to that fact). Look out how this tour is doing: amazingly well. They could tour for the rest of their lives and rake in loads of cash. The Mac will go on from SYW and continue to be successful, IMO; I see no end in sight at the moment. Honestly, though, what other classic rock band is this successful these days? I don't mean just touring, I mean all these appearances, new CDs, radio play, AMA noms, television specials. The Mac is riding high once again and they will everytime they decide to unveil their 747.

I dont think they will come back because Lindsey has got a baby coming. He really needs to be at home that last month because he must take care of the other kids while she's in her last trimester. It's only right!
As for the setlist...what else can we expect? Fleetwood Mac HAS to play those songs or they would be Blondie, playing like the 5000 seaters or smaller. No one wants to hear NEW songs from an "old time band". Thats just the way it is. They TOOK BIG CHANCES with a new album and playing those songs and like BC...so we should be greatful.
If they do jump on a plane and come back here, it would be for a tiny leg, but again Lindsey's wife is having that baby in April....

*nods* But... they could easily start the tour in late May/early June and continue it until early fall... small newborns are easier to take around because all the do is sleep for the first couple months anyway, am I right about that, Moms and Dads out there? ;)
My vote is that they will come back. Lindsey was gone for the majority of the time Kristen was pregnant with Will, traveling with FM...[and such]... and I'm sure Kristen will have plenty of support from nannies and her parents and friends, etc. I don't really see it as an issue. Yes she will have the baby in April and then they will go back out on the road. Just my opinion! And let's hope that I'm right...
Does anyone remember when Lindsey said for sure that they were coming back... and when Stevie said they were doing the "sheds"? Because if it was after everyone found out about the pregnancy then it sounds like the pregnancy is a non-issue.
...they just HAVE to come back!!! I am dying for them to come to Charlotte!! They have never played here.... EVER!!! (Stevie has as recently as her TISL tour!!)And we have a great ampitheater here that holds a lot of people... :) *crosses fingers*

Stevie mentioned the sheds for the first time in that Z93 from Atlanta interview.. what was that, August? So that's a bit early. I'm not sure about what Lindsey said- I don't remember his saying that.
I hope you're right, Countess Secretary.

I hope I'm right too, Tschawah.
I just remembered that Lindsey alluded to coming back to the States to a fan he met in Cincinnati (August 16th). So that is a little early. I'm guessing he didn't find out till around the time of Soundstage. (September 15th).

I have unfortunately only seen FM live ONCE, but I have read many reviews, and everything I read was played out in front of me just like I had read in the reviews. Right down to Lindsey "chasing" Stevie during Tusk. That was my one complaint (well, other than the fact that the camera for the screens focused on Stevie instead of Lindsey during the entire "Say Goodbye") -- the whole show seems completely scripted. I know that a show of this magnitude has to be choregraphed to some extent, but I would prefer a little more REAL spontaneity. I have seen Stevie twice (Enchanted tour and TISL), and I found those shows to be exactly like reviews from other cities as well. Maybe the answer for me if I want spontaneity is to not read reviews??

Ever since The Dance days, everything is scripted and fake. Everything. It gets boring real fast, expecially when the same gestures and speeches are given every night. The Mac will never be spontaneous again, they'll just do things "over and over." I found it rather funny when reviewers would point out Stevie's "robotic" movements and actions on the TISL tour. Pretty on the mark.

They will play sheds. Probably for 6-10 weeks starting next June. 30-50 dates. Major Shed venues only. Perhaps something could change this, but as of right now it is still being floated as a tour to expect to venues for next summer by the promoter.

One misconception I've read on this thread is the idea that sheds are more profitable than arenas. They're really not- though the majority of sheds are much larger than arenas, the vast majority of that seating in a shed is comprised of the size of the lawn and the amount of people able to fit there. Reserved seating is a pretty darn small percentage of the capacity of a shed, and those reserved seats are the only seats that can command the premium ticket price.
That premium ticket price is still generally less than what an act would charge in an arena because the perception of a shed show is different from that of an arena show- and because of factors like the lessened sound and the possibility of cruddy weather, fans generally aren't willing to pay the same premium for a shed show as they would an arena ticket.
So, if this makes sense- an arena show is more profitable because although there is a smaller capacity, the majority of the tickets are sold at a higher premium. The median ticket is much pricier than at a shed. At a shed, way fewer of those tickets are sold at a premium, and the majority are at a cost of generally no more than $50 (I know in Fleetwood Mac's case they were charging more at some sheds, which was DUMB).
Blah blah blah- to put it succintly- at a shed- more bodies in the door but a significantly lower profit.
And the differences in overhead isn't that much- the insurance at a shed is generally more which makes up for the difference in the rental fees for an arena vs. a shed, and the only real time that's saved is in the load-in/load-out.

This is perhaps the thing I despise MOST about FM.
I know that I, personally, would not be able to go out every night and deliver canned speeches and ....
THE BLOCKING!!!!
Okay.... we got it.... The Dance performance of "Landslide" was genuine- you could tell because at the end, after the hug, Stevie pulled her hands to her face and just couldn't say anything- she kept patting her cheeks (almost as if she were pinching herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming).
But now it's just not necessary. And I know it's the same old reasoning..................
"We have to do this for the fans. They WANT to see it!"
Ya know what? I would rather see them tear the roof off with "Sisters of the Moon" anyday of the week than see another scripted version of "Landslide".
At least Lindsey makes the effort to make "Tusk" a total free-for-all, where each night you never know what to expect. Jumping, hollering, hooting, hugging, dancing, grinding- GO FOR IT LINDSEY!!!
Being spontaneous is the total way to go your own way.

I don't want to get into a huge debate, but sheds are more profitable for a band like Fleetwood Mac. They are going to sell 7-8000 seats in most sheds at 125 and all the lawn seats are going to be around 50-60. In an arena most seats 125, 75, and 50. You take out the middle portion, but that is the smallest percentage anyway.
Overhead is cheaper at a Shed than a major metro arena. I am not going to get into what I do, but a lot of time is spent with contracts......

when the 'casual' fan goes to see FM a lot of the songs they expect to hear songs are those that everybody seems to know, such as Everywhere and Little Lies, i.e. Christine songs, which, as most people know, are always the ones that seem to do well in the charts. Even Stevie has said that Christine si the one who delivers the hits. Which of the 'casual' fans are gonna know 'Beautiful Child' or even im so afraid, especially in Europe where FM are hardly ever heard on the radio or on TV. I think the SYW tour can only be really appriciated by true FM fans who understand the relationship between stevie and lindsey.

A Conversation Before The First Show On The Second Leg
Stevie: "Okay, Linds, at like, 10:05pm eastern standard time, I want you to blow me a kiss. Then, I want you to hump your guitar and act like a jackass during the drum solo before Stand Back. Then, when you're through singing Say Goodbye, I want you to make-pretend cry...I will too. It'll like, be extra-much-more-fabulous for everyone. Oh, and I almost forgot, when we're through doing Landslide, please make sure you take your hand in mine and kiss my fingers---we'll alternate nights as to whether you kiss me on the mouth or kiss me on my forehead."
Lindsey: "I'm taking notes. Obviously, kissing you on the mouth can only occur when we're down south so while we're there, I'll put my arm around you and give you a side hug. You know what happens in the north! Hmmm....how about I unhook my guitar from the amp and then OOOOh! I start lassoing you and then I chase you around for a minute THEN! Oh, THEN! I'll start dance-grinding with you. We'll premiere that in...hmmm....one of the shows in the south..."
Stevie: "Lindsey! You're a GENIUS! THAT? That is FABULOUS! Oh, and don't forget your canned speeches. You've worked so hard on them, I'd hate for you to miss a word even though I? Am seriously tired of hearing them. Although the chasing and what comes with it? I will never get tired of."
Lindsey: "Awww c'mon, you know you love hearing them every night. Fifty cities and you? Are still loving it."
Stevie: "Riiight."

Mick's babies aren't that old and he was out there playing. When you have your own plane and a support staff it certainly makes things much easier. I think you're right. They could easily play through the summer.

Unless they're playing Red Rocks, which is a nightmare load in/out. That will never happen again though.

If they're guarantee is $750,000 then how are the reserved seats still going to go for $125 in a shed? Honest question, not trying to be a smart ass.

7,000 reseved seats at 125 is 875,000 before selling a single lawn seat. You sell 5,000 lawn seats at 50 each another 250,000. Before you know it a show before 12,000 people in shed has grossed 1.1 mil.
A recent example. October 2003 Fleetwood Mac plays the sold out Pepsi Center in Denver. Crowd 15,000. Tickets 125, 75, 49.50. The gross was 1.2
Aersomith plays Cynthia Woods Amphitheatre Ocotber 2003. Crowd was 15,000. Tickets 125 and 60. Gross was 1.2. 6,900 reserved seats.
Similiar ticket prices at dissimilar venues with similiar revenue. This without a mid level ticket price.
A promoter guarantees a revenue number to a band. From that guarantee the production, venue, and personnel costs are paid. Indvidual band members take their guarantee from that amount as well.

I always love receiving sweet gifts around Halloween! I knew they scripted their shows in advance- I'm just glad someone had the evidence and posted it!
