View Full Version : Which Ledgies are pre-Dance fans?

I am just wondering...who here was a fan before The Dance and what year did you become a fan? Mention HOW you became a fan if you feel like it. I have NOTHING at all against you Dancers, I am purely curious. Even though computers have taken over the world, I'd tend to guess that people who became fans with The Dance are younger (like me) and more likely to have a computer in their home.

Me: 1977. I was 9 years old then. In a nutshell...
I knew and liked the "hits" from the 1975 album when they were out but I wasn't sure who did them.
Then, when I heard "Go your own way", that was it, I needed to find out who this Fleetwood Mac was. I convinced my mother to get the "Rumours" album because it was virtually a greatest hits album in itself (after seeing them win the Grammy on TV in early '78).
So I then eventually started the quest to get everything they've done (and I'm still working on it). :)
I must confess, that I too, was hesitant to get any non BN era stuff at first but once I realized that I just had to give the non BN era stuff the same chance I would give any non Mac related artist and not try to compare it to the BN era Mac stuff, I was just more annoyed at myself more than anything else that I didn't investigate any of that stuff earlier as I could've been enjoying all of that much earlier than I had been as I liked it just as much.
...and the rest is history. :)

I've been a hard-core fan since 1987, when "Tango in the Night" was released. I was 17 at the time, and fell in love with "Big Love" after hearing it on the radio. (Fell in love with Lindsey, too, but that's another story!) :D
I had "been aware" of Fleetwood Mac and their songs since the 1970s, but it took me until the late '80s to get my act together!

I became a fan at a very young age after my older brother bought the Tango In The Night album the day it was released in 1987. I remember thinking that all the songs on it were amazing and when I saw the Big Love video I thought Lindsey (who I thought was called "Steve" after reading the album liner notes! ) was the coolest guy ever to walk the Earth! It was also the same year that I'd started playing guitar (I'd started teaching myself by playing along to my parents' Shadows records) so I listened to the album over and over trying to play simple "pluck-pluck" versions of the songs on my junior-size acoustic.:) From then on, I began listening to all my brother's and parents' Fleetwood Mac cassettes and I fell in love with the band and their music. Lindsey Buckingham became one of my two inspirations (the other being Hank Marvin) and to say that I was "extremely happy" when I heard that LB had rejoined for the Dance in 1997 would be the understatement of the century! I would say I definitely fall into that category of fans who are primarily a fan of a specific member, rather than the band as a whole, and in my case that member is, of course, LB.

I was a casual fan in 1975 but I became an obssesive fan in 1977. I was 12. There has been no turning back since then!
Rumours was everywhere. I took a look at these people and I bought the white album first then a month or two later I got Rumours. When I listed to the music and saw the photos I knew right away that we had a soul connection.

It was the first time I heard Rhiannon on the radio and I had no idea who they were but the song kept coming back to me. I also remember Over My Head but that one didn't make as much as an impression as Rhiannon. I was 12 at the time and totally hooked on Rhiannon (still am). Then in 1977 I got Rumours for my 14th birthday. I've been a hardcore fan eversince.
Nice detail: my brother is 6 older than me and he was a fan of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. He told me when I was a child, I always asked him to play the song "with the guitar and the flute in it". Years later I recognised the song as Oh Well prt 2. One day, when I was still living at home, I played it and my Dad came in. He said:"Why are you playing this old music? Your brother used to play this all time". So I guess Fleetwood Mac runs in my family LOL

actually. I have been listening to 'em for a long time (Since around '75 or '76 when "Rhiannon" was first on the radio)...
But in all honesty I can't pinpoint a certain year, But I do remember listening to "Tango In The Night" when I was in high school...

Well...I was 9 years old when Rumours came out and I heard their music on the radio...and I always sang along and like it...
Probably not until I was around 12 or 13 (1980-81 or so) that I became "a fan."
So, yeah....I'd consider myself Pre-Dance ;)

I'm another fan from '87! TITN hooked me. The first time I heard Seven Wonders, I was enchanted. :D I was six and found the cassette in the glove box at a gas station while my mother pumped gas. I recently wrote an essay about my discovering the Mac for my advanced English class. We were told to write 4,000 words on a significant moment in our lives, one that shaped us into who were are today, and I chose finding that tape 16 years ago. I got an A on it!

Wonderful to read all of these stories on how we came into Fleetwood Mac... And Stevie.... The highlight of my earlier years were RED ROCKS, Colorado. She played there 3 times in a 2 month spand. The last one being her video. Which was the day before my birthday and I am on the tape 3 times with greatness!!!! I was awesome! Mike Fleetwood would grace his presence......
I also got to meet the band (Fleetwood Mac) Portland Oregon ( a few of the band members) On the Tango In The Night Tour! Wahooooooooooo!

My fanaticism kicked into high gear in '78 or '79, when I started collecting bootleg concerts (Osaka 12-4-77 was my first tape, I believe) from people who advertised in the back of Rolling Stone, & I sniffed out every single picture or article in magazines & newspapers (went to many libraries & used the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature to find old concert reviews & print articles in papers all over the country, & then printed them up from microfilm or microfiche). I first saw Fleetwood Mac actually play in 1976 in Los Angeles, & attended several FM shows in California the following year, like the Pauley Pavilion shows at UCLA. 1978 was a dry year for Fleetwood Mac concerts in California (there weren't any), but there were several guest appearances by the gang at various gigs from other people. 1979 really kicked it up a notch for concertgoing -- I practically spent the whole week at the Forum in '79 for the five-night stand, & saw the San Diego show & the Cow Palace show. This whole era was when my internal "image" of the band solidified in my mind, so consequently this is the era against which I have compared all subsequent eras in terms of style & presentation & actual sound (I always did prefer just the four of them playing to the lagging, dragging circus they've got nowadays).
My fanaticism took a dive with the '87 tour, due to several factors. But it lasted a good long time.

' Tell me liiieees'...It was wierd but from that point I wanted to know so much more about her!!!....the rest is history...a major groupie ever since...

My mom also put headphones on her tummy when she was pregnant with me. She played RUMOURS. I'm 21 now, so I am a late bloomer when it comes to becoming a hardcore fan. I always knew who the Mac was growing up, but it was hearing Silver Springs at the age of 15-16ish that I fell head over heels! So, THE DANCE was the first cd I bought....then the WHITE ALBUM....RUMOURS....For Christmas in '97 I got a huge collection...including the rare box set. Eventually, I got into everyone's solo stuff.....Now, I guess you can say I'm obsessed :o) My collection is now overflowing with Mac/Mac related stuff.....I guess the past two years I've emerged myself in finding demos/bootlegs....I have come a long way :) As of now, my most memorable experience/item is my signed Stevie poster I got from her...good times. Glad I could share my FM experience.....
BTW.....I'm a new "ledgie".....(not a big computer fan, but I'm trying:) )

i got my first fm album in i think it was in the mid or early nineties wich was tango (i think i got it trough my uncle (who has a second hand comic bookstore but also has cd's on the side) wich was tango ( i also got greatest hits , and behind the mask on tape and the cd singles of both i do and save me (the tapes he could not sell because of lack of interest and the cd singles were scratched so he could not sell em but they stil played fine
later i also got rumours on dvd from him pre-dance
so i was already a casual fan when i bought the dance
(it was the first one i picked up new in the stores then though)
aswell as the videotape of the show short after (have replaced it on dvd by now)
but it really kicked in about 1999 i think when i got the enchanted boxset after that i got all the old stuff and solo stuff and albums like mirage and even time
but what made me go from casual to sudenly die hard fan
i can not say it's like lindsey said in the dance "isn't that weird "

June of 1992, when I saw the video for "Countdown" while sitting at home with nothing to do (I was 14, so no wheels). I thought it was an awesome song and Mr. Buckingham seemed like a pretty cool dude. I had a vague recollection that he was in FM, but I always thought his name was Mick Fleetwood (my thinking was, "Why would the band be named after the DRUMMER?" ). Anyway, after a few days of seeing the video some more and having the song stuck in my head, I went to check out my parents' old LPs, because I knew they were FM fans. They had Greatest Hits on CD, but I was into the purity of vinyl (I had been listening to Zeppelin and The Doors nonstop for most of the previous year) and I wanted to see what these guys looked like. I found Rumours in their box of LPs in the basement, and pulled out the sleeve. I saw the picture of Lindsey standing on stage with his hand his hip and I thought, "That guy looks really cool." Then I saw the close-up of Stevie where she has a big smile and I thought, "That's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen!" So I put the album on and I listened to it over and over for a good 4 hours. My mom was probably wondering what the hell I was doing . Then I had some dinner, and went back to it again for another 2 hours. And I haven't been the same since. :)

i've been a fan since 1990, i was six years old and have vivid memories of loving "little lies" and "gyspy." my dad would always play fm in the car and that is how i got hooked.
This is a cool thread! I thought I'd de-lurk and post for once in a blue moon.
I became a mac fan around 1975 when the "white" album came out. It was a 1975 or 1976? [cant remember exactly] appearance
by the Mac on the "midnight special" on NBC that really hooked me. They did the songs "Over my head" "Rhiannon" and "World Turning". Rhiannon and World Turning blew me away. SN and LB were "different"!! Not like any other performers at that time. SN was cool in her rhiannon chiffon... and LB was like no one else with his unique finger picking playing style. And JM & CM were just cool and laid back. MF was freaky with his "talking african drum solo" on WT.
Plus, as a girl in high school at the time...I thought it was cool to have girls in a band.
You have to remember that at that time.....all Big time rock bands were guys! KISS, ...etc.....not to mention that DISCO was getting geared up with KC & the sunshine band and Bee GEES much to my listening DISPLEASURE. i was and still am anti disco.
and at that time FM was like NOTHING ELSE AROUND!
First time I saw them "live" 1980 TUSK TOUR..... and have seen them on all the tours since. I was fortunate to have 2nd row seats on the dance tour.... and this tour i have seen them 2 times.
I loved the mirage and tusk tours....but this current tour is one of my favorites! I think its better than the dance and has all the energy [sans drugs] of Tusk. The Mac still has it! cant say the same for KC and Disco! bwahaaaaaaa! Some things stand the test of time.....

I remember as a youngster being driven to school and after school activities, hearing the hits from the White Album and Rumours, though I did not know it was them at the time as I was only six and seven years old.
I was told by someone who lived near me that Fleetwood Mac was a great band. I had started becoming a music fan in general, when your TV picture tube blows out and you have no entertainment then you find other ways and mine was my mom's old stereo. I saw the Hold Me video over this person's house and I bought the Mirage album, that was in late 82 and I was eleven.
I got cable in 1983 and MTV reaired the HBO concert I was only able to hear on the radio. I was thrilled to watch the Mac and the solos progress over the years. I am hopelessly hooked on them!!

I remember listening to and enjoying their songs from as long ago as I can remember (my parents were fans and even owned Buckingham Nicks!), but I finally realized exactly who they were and began my obsession when I watched their documentary on Disney back in approximately 1992 when I was about 13. Landslide especially stood out to me because I'd never heard it before and I instantly fell in love with it.:woohoo:

I was 11 when the Greatest Hits album came out in '88. Mom and Dad bought it, and I hated it because they liked it. But I do remember hearing Sara, and asked my mom who it was and told her I thought her voice was very pretty....
Skip up about 5 years later, I was 16, and in the car with some friends. I started looking through the CD case, and came across the greatest hits album. I played it right then, and that's when it all started. I remember going home that night, and asking mom where her tape was. She damn near died! I went out and bought it the next day, and haven't quit buying since!

1976 or so for me, although I was only a 6 year old boy. My oldest sister had the 'White Album' 8-Track which she used to blast while she would take us for Saturday or Sunday trips to the beach. I still remember the white vinyl interior of her '75 Firebird and us yelling and singing along with the lyrics to 'Monday Morning'! Of course, we also then got 'Rumours' and listened to that constantly too although by that point it was my brother who then developed the FM taste while my sister started gravitating towards disco. But I knew what I liked, and always looked forward to catching FM on tv or on the radio (still remember hearing a 'Tusk' special presentation in 1979 on the radio one night while driving with my family and most of them acting disappointed in their initial first listen). I also was in particular a Stevie fan while in high school, and the apex of this was the 'Rock A Little' period which to this day (to me) stands out as one of Stevie's best.

I am a pre-Dance fan. My mom got "Fleetwood Mac" the 8 track when I was about 11 and that's all we listened to in the car. "Monday Morning" was an instant fave of mine and I just loved "Landslide" from the first time I heard it and thru the years it's always been a fave of mine. I also was hugely into "Crystal." I know we had Rumours but I can't recall the actual album and we did have Tusk. You are going to laugh though as I used to NOT like Dreams (to me overplayed) or Sara and now I love them!
Anyway, then when the Dance aired on MTV in 1997 I had to watch. I knew Lindsey had left the band but honestly didn't recall what he looked like and I had a vague memory of him and Stevie. I saw the Dance and was hooked all over again, esp when they did Landslide.
So that's my story!

I was 14 in the late summer of 1982. I saw the Hold Me video at a friend's house, and had been hearing it on the radio a lot. I was instantly smitten with Lindsey. Plus, I did like the song.
I went home and dug out my older brother's 8 tracks and found the White Album, Rumours and Live. I was like "Oh, they did THIS, and THIS too?" as I started listening to all their songs.
Then I got my own copies of the White Album, Rumours and Live (I got the vinyl AND eventually the cassettes) as well as Tusk (turned out to be my FAV) and of course Mirage. Then within a year I got Law and Order, Bella Donna and Buckingham Nicks, then the Wild Heart, and so on......as time went on. I was forever hooked.
I just missed them in concert that Sept. of 82 as they kicked of the Mirage tour here on the east coast. I am still kicking myself over that.

I was a partying sixteen-year-old and Street Angel and Time were the albums that defined my life. Jane was the theme song for my senior prom.
Of course, none of the above is true. I became a Stevie fan in '83 and a diehard Mac fan as a seventeen-year-old in '87. I still love Seven Wonders.:)

I have been a fan since I first heard "The White Album" playing on my parents' turntable, which is definitely Pre-Dance time. I would say it was mid to late 70s. My parents played a lot of Fleetwood Mac. As a child I would ask them to play Rumours, and I loved the song "I Don't Want to Know," which is still a fav. I guess they helped pave the way for the huge fan I am today, so my thanks to them for the introduction! I guess I became the crazied, mega-fan I am today in the late 80s while I was in junior high and high school, and I have been a crazied, mega-fan ever since! :]

Cool thread idea!
It was 1976 or so and my boyfriend at the time (can't remember his name) lent me his copy of the White Album. I fell in love with FM! It was their music and the harmony of their voices and especially the song "Over My Head". I've been a die hard fan ever since.

I am normally a lurker, but I really dug this thread...
On my tenth birthday, my neighbor Annemarie took me to a local record store and her present to me was that she would purchase any LP that I picked out. Being the big movie queen that I was, my initial choice was a clean new SOUND OF MUSIC soundtrack, since the one at home was pretty scratched up from countless plays. But, a black and white picture of the most beautiful woman I had ever seen caught my attention. I had no idea who Buckingham Nicks were, but I got the record then and there. A couple of years later, "Rhiannon" was all over the radio and I liked the song but didn't put 2 and 2 together until I saw FM perform the song on The Midnight Special and I snapped. So, I truly have been a fan since the beginning.
My first live show was during the TUSK tour and I have seen multiple shows from every tour since then.
I've been lucky enough to have met everyone in the band a couple of times and I can honestly say that they are very sweet, genuinely nice people. They are "my band".

Rather odd on my part as I was first fan in the mid-eighties, Gypsy, Seven Wonders, Talk to Me, but had NO idea who sang the songs (just some pretty blonde woman), hey I was only about five:) Then in 1997 my dad bought the Dance and I finally consented to listening to it (What no Gypsy?!) and started laughing hysterically when My Little Demon came on, then I heard the song Sweet Girl, which became one of my fav songs...

Rhiannon grabbed me back in the 70's and Belladonna pushed me into the hard core. This is kinda sad, I was the only one of my friends who really, really liked Stevie... So A friend of mine said he would go to the Stevie shows with me, if I would go to the Neil Young shows with him. My girl friend at the time didn't understand the collecting thing, she got a bit jealous at times of her. (Oh yeah, Stevie is competing with you for a high school kid, .....Now that would have been cool. Here is my Prom date, Stevie Nicks). My girl friend didn't understand the fun of hunting for that certain 45 cover at record shows. Oh well, Stevie is still apart of my life, and the old girl friend is long gone....Hmmm what does that tell you?

White album and Rumours era..... as Pattie said, it was "everywhere"!! the soundtrack of our lives.. we lived it, the sound, the drama, all of it... I was in 10th grade then..
before that, I my first very vague memories of the band are of my sister turning me on to the albums before Stevie and Lindsey, with Bob Welch, as music to listen to when i babysat my niece at her house..
and a cousin showing me the Buckingham Nicks album saying "These are the guys with Fleetwood Mac now..."
I am glad to see some fans a bit closer to my age :wavey:
