View Full Version : Point Me Out To Some Good solo Stevie

I downloaded Edge Of 17 just because I remember liking it on the radio, but haven't heard it for a while.
If she has other stuff that rocks like this I want some more! :D
I don't want to go hogwild on solo Nicks purchases... so could you point me out to her best one or 2?
Thanks!

Yeah Eric...tone down your comments. I'm a straight female and I even find your posts illuding to gays offensive. I don't get it--if you're trying to be funny, you're not.
EDIT--and by the way, I know a lot of STRAIGHT men who like Stevie.

I for one think its awesome to see straight guys like Stevie. Two well known Ledgies come to mind - our room admin, Johnny Stew & our Darklinensuit Jake.
Personally I dont care what your sexual orientation is, however I wouldnt slam you for it and I would hope we here could be above slamming others for theirs.

I confess I played it "straight" in the early days of the Ledge boards, because I was still struggling with my own issues... but those days are gone now, and I came out around 2000. (Thankfully!)
At any rate... and I don't wish to speak for Eric here... but I'm certain his motivation wasn't to bash homosexuals. His comment was meant purely in jest, in a tongue-in-cheek way.
But it is VERY cool to see the Ledgies in this thread working to make sure this is a comfortable place for EVERYONE. :)
Eric... to answer your question, you can always start with Stevie's 3-disc boxed-set, 'Enchanted.'
It was released in 1998, and is a pretty excellent overview of her solo career, with the majority of her singles, some classic album tracks, a few rare b-sides, and her soundtrack appearances.
If you don't want to invest in the boxed-set, I'd suggest either 'Bella Donna,' 'The Wild Heart,' or 'Trouble In Shangri-La'... to start off with. ;)

Regardless of his intentions, it's an extremely inappropriate and offensive comment. And unless I'm completely missing something, there's nothing funny about it...

Then you obviously didn't see his thread on the Chit Chat board... or his constant use of the F-word, Johnny.
Listen, if he wants to post, that's fine with me; more power to him. But he doesn't have to be so offensive and careless in doing so. Things would go much smoother if people could post in a decent manner.
Just my opinion, but I'm sure most feel that way. :)

I reported that thread to Janet and then proceeded to post to every other thread on that page (with a little help from a few freinds) so that it would not be visible on the first page of the Chit Chat forum. I thought it was an emabarrassment.
This person obviously needs to get attention, however there are far more positive ways to get it.

With those comments removed, if anyone wishes to further edit or delete their posts, feel free to do so... though it's not necessary.
Hopefully we can try to start with a clean-slate now.
And I thank everyone for helping to "police" the boards.
As moderators, we all try to do our best to keep things running smoothly, but some things do slip by us on occasion... so we appreciate it when Ledgies point things out to us that we may have missed. :)

As a dyed-in-the-wool 100% all-American homosexual I was convinced of ignorance by the insinuation that Stevie is connected with gays. I've prided myself on being different my whole life. While every other homo has thrown himself at Cher and Madonna, I have been quietly enlightened, worshipping only at the Church of Stevie, acting as a missionary trying to spread the word to my unknowing brothers.
Stevie I don't think is strongly connected with any one group, she sheds her light evenly across all divisions and categories. Your Stevie collection will not be the give-away that your collection of International Male catalogs & too-tight half shirts will be, so go ahead, embrace Stevie. While your at it, embrace another man. We'll never tell because we sense your issues.

JS - Im so sorry, and you made a good point, I guess looking back I didnt really know 100% one way or another. Whereas with Jake I remember him talking about ex-women. So my apologies! But you know I dig you just the same. :)
Id recommend Eric that you maybe do a B&P or trade in for some live-Stevie. Great stuff and I usually enjoy it more than the studio albums.

I don't think of them as my ex-women, gypsysara. That's not politically correct.
Let's just agree that they're psychos.:)
And Eric, I think most Stevie newcomers get into Bella Donna. I love The Wild Heart the most, but you have to enjoy the syntrh sound.
TimeSpace and the boxed set tweak a number of the songs too much for my liking, but disc 1 on the boxed set is fantastic.
The thing about early Stevie solo (and Lindsey solo) is the songs are really more about the artistry and voice than the symmetry and hit-making sound that is evident on some Mac albums. (I'll probably get blasted for that, so let me point out this is an opinion.) You have to let yourself go when you listen to Stevie solo - sort of capture your soul. If you expect every song to be Edge, you'll be disappointed.
Another tip: Buy the Stevie in Concert (HBO video) instead of an album - the songs will mean more, and several Mac songs are represented.
Some Stevie songs don't come alive until you hear them live, and then when you return to the album the songs completely reach you.

I agree that this post should not bash Eric, but I'm laughing because every time I hear that fan stereotype, I think of the credits during extended Edge of 17 at RR on the video. The scene with the row of skanky spiky-haired women with the jock guys holding beer in the milk jugs and jerking their heads to the beat. It doesn't fit the above stereotype in my mind, but then again, I'm stereotyping.

Actually the milk jugs were usually filled with grain alcohol and juice or an odorless hard liqour such as vodka. They had to pass the smell test in order to get past security. For some industrious partiers, the jugs were filled with mushroom tea. Talk about your brilliant colors. Woo.

Why is everyone so uptight about the possibility of a potential cyberland offense-I mean I know we love Stevie so we are sensitive and all but... sheesh!
For the record, I wasn't attacking Eric in my post (anymore than I was attacking myself and other homos w/ the Int'l Male and half shirt references). I thought that would be obvious when I started off by saying I was a homo who was offended that he thought all homos liked Stevie (as opposed to being a homo who was offended that he might be slandering homos!).
I never take this stuff that personally so I hope noone ever gets put out by my sarcasm (which I always try to direct towards myself as well).

What's this thread about again? Oh yeah...referrals to Stevies music...
Bella Donna will always seem to be the definitive Stevie and best known work. A classic for sure, but The Wild Heart is my favorite. Less twang, more synthesizer (but not synth overload like Rock A Little), and more mystery and drama.
When Stevie talks about having the first and last song of an album, then filling in the rest, I think this album has classic opening and ending songs. And incredibly important in its totally irrelevant way: a great album cover, again my favorite! I think it is a great visual representation of the album, all purpley darkness and mystery.

TWH is my absolute favorite, too.
Perfect vocals from Stevie & the back-up singers, great mix of Guitar, synth, & piano, great lyrics, dark & upbeat sound at the same time.
I do wish Garbo would have been on it, and I won't tell you which song I wish it would have replaced. (But it's about a certain drummer who has never been tamed.)

I am not a huge fan of early Stevie solo stuff, but I would recommend 'Trouble In Shangra-la' and 'Timespace'... I also have 'Enchanted' but I only really listen to disc three, and sometimes disc one... 'Trouble in Shangra-la' is my favorite album of hers.
Johnny Stew
08-28-2003, 01:11 AM
'The Wild Heart' is definitely my favorite (with 'Rock A Little' and 'Trouble In Shangri-La' in a dead-locked tie for second favorite)... though most people seem to prefer 'Bella Donna.'

OK first of all, maybe I'm late in getting here, but what was offensive about Eric's post. All I see is him saying that Edge of 17 rocks and that he wants to know what solo albums are the best. Anyways I STRONGLY recomend Bella Donna. A) Edge of 17 is on it and you love it already B) Outside the Rain, Stop Dragging My Heart Around, Outside The Rain, and How Still My love all rock along with Edge of 17. Kind of Woman is an AMAZING song as is the title track. Think About it is great too. After the Glitter Fades is pretty good, but is a bit country ish. Leather and Lace is a very good duet with Don "I suck" Henley. The only possible dud is Highwayman which i still like quite a bit, but is definitly on a lower level. So I recomend Bella Donna, plus Stevie looks the hottest ever on the cover.
And I don't recomend Timespace. It was my first Stevie album, and I'm glad I got all her albums, becuase unlike Fleetwood Mac (and this is true to a point with FM too) Stevie's hits are NOT her best songs at all. but Enchanted on the other hand is a must have. Disk 3 is like having another album, filled with rarities. And to me those rarities are the best set of songs out there with Stevie's solo career.
So in closing I recomend Bella Donna and Enchanted as MUSTS, and I STRONGLY recomend The Wild Heart. And for me personally Street Angel is another must, but that's not widely considered great. Other Side of the Mirror and ESPECIALLY Rock A Little should be bought LAST if you ever get that far.

DiamondSnake-where did you get that someone thinks Stevie is more of a role model for gays than straights? In my posts I was saying that she really isn't a gay "icon" -certainly there are some homos that are totally whack for her (ok -well I can think of one...mmhmmm...and oh yeah Johnny Stew-ok there's two!). For some reason druggie rockers don't ever make gay role model/icon status. But then really-should Stevie be anyone's role model? Maybe if you need a role model when your middle aged and don't think you can overcome drugs, weight problems, etc. A little late for finding a role model though.
I have to say if Stevie had been role model material I for one would probably have never caught my Stevie fever (which has been known to cause uncontrolled outbursts of fever dancing). And if she had been a role model we wouldn't have gotten tongues in Sister of the Moon live, or the Rock A Little tour, or quotes like "don't f*ck with my people" which I use quite abit (albeit with more of a Coffee Talk/Jewish American Princess accent) ,songs like Gold Dust Woman or Welcome to the Room..Sara (ok-we probably could've lived with out one of those).
Oh I'm off topic AGAIN-sorry!

OMG-sending Stevie a caftan from Int'l Male is too much! What if we threw it on stage to her (along with a catalog of course so she could order more or exchange for a darker black, if necessary).
And Eric, of course I know about Night of A Thousand Stevies - so I do stand (at least a little bit) corrected! And since Madonna attended one of the Nights... , and since Madonna is a gay icon, I think that doubles Stevies gay icon/role model points. But even if I was wrong it made for a fun post and some entertaining off-topic banter!

Being that Stevie is a straight woman, it's not possible for her to be a "role model" for gay men... since a role model is someone who serves as an example for other people to emulate, in a particular behaviour or social role.
Role models for gay men, would be more along the lines of Rupert Everett, Danny Roberts (from Real World), Ian McKellen, Chad Allen (from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman), and Reichen Lehmkuhl & Chip Arndt (Amazing Race).
But Stevie is definitely a gay icon.
Though perhaps not on the level of Liza Minelli (who loves her gay fans so much, she marries 'em!), or Barbra Streisand, or Madonna.
I think... though I don't speak for everyone... that one of the aspects of Stevie that appeals to gay men, is the simultaneous vulnerability and strength that she conveys, both onstage and in her songs.
She's also overcome a lot of obstacles and troubles, and blazed a trail which is all her own... and gay men tend to have a lot of respect for that.
Of course, I'm speaking in generalizations, because gay men... like ALL people... are each very different, and have a wide variety of likes and dislikes.

Well, I think she could be a role model as an artist. As a writer, singer, or just in the way she approaches her career. I won't get into the fashion. We have seen the results of that ! I am many things, but a drag queen ain't one of 'em.
She sure is a gay icon. I don't know when it happened, but I first noticed it on the SA tour. The crowds were smaller, but the audiences I saw here on the west coast were pretty heavy on the homo scale. Between the gay guys, gay girls, dress alikes, and just Stevie gal fans, that was about half the crowd.
I can't explain it. I, for one, have no interest in Madonna, Cher, Judy, Marilyn, Barbra(blech!), Diana, or any of the other common gay icons. Perhaps that is why they took my official card away and revoked my membership at the gay guy club headquarters.
In my experience, Stevie was attractive because of her voice, and her songs. But maybe her it was her ambiguous words that hooked me. As a kid, not knowing what the hell to call whatever pain and isolation I felt, it was nice to hear someone sing a rock and roll song that expressed an anguish that was familiar. The words were just vague enough that I could project my own unresolved conflict onto them and feel they could have been mine. Beyond that, it's a mystery. I just adore the woman and it seems like I always have.
That's MO, J Stew.
Wow has this gone off topic.
