i don't know....i think it's more than that....i almost hear in the beginning "well that goddamn.....something something something"
she probably doesn't even realize what she said.
this brings to mind the alpine valley 1986 concert that i was at....during "edge of seventeen" she says:
"well, in flood of tears...
noone really ever heard the fall b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-
but me!"

LMAO!
I have to bust out that boot and listen to it!! I also have a show from the RAL tour where she goes off No Spoken Word. I don't know what show it is, but during the "I don't know how to learn" part, she goes "I never knew the words, I just don't know the words...I don't know them! Not those words!!"

I've heard of a version of "No Spoken Word" where she says something about a goddamn book...maybe that's the same one?

That's the Alpine Valley Music Center show, isn't it? I've often wondered whether she was referencing "Lover Come Back to Me" or her own "Juliet" in its larval stage. For some reason, she started introducing the band during the "Rhiannon" instrumental break.
That tour was the last of my big front-row extravaganzas. I sat up front for all of Stevie's appearances in CA: Sacramento, L.A., Orange Co., San Diego, Fresno. I thought she was a blast at every show. Yes, she was buzzed or whatever, but that's rock & roll, isn't it? She put on great shows because her natural stage fright was in check, pharmaceutically speaking.
Two Rock a Little shows I wish I had seen in person: Madison Square Garden in August & Jones Beach in June. Those two have to rank with two of her best solo gigs of all time. If I compare either of those with, for example, what I saw at Irvine Meadows in 2001, I can only shake my head sadly & confusedly, & think of that line from the poem: "Do not go gentle into that good night"

David, i so agree with you....yeah, that was the alpine valley music theater in wisconsin....i lived in chicago at the time and was fortunate enough to see her there. i remember there were hippies there doing some real interesting dances...i watched them more than the actual show! and then there was poplar creek a few weeks later....the poplar creek show has surfaced as "cloaks and daggers"....anyway, yeah, the shows were great....i wasn't aware at the time about the drugs...i was only 16 and a bit naive. i wish i could go back and relive those moments. and, yeah, it IS rock and roll so who cares....we didn't at the time....and that was the end of that particular era for her. that tour was her swan song.
I have a Jones Beach show on video and she was pretty wild....it was almost scary cause she definately seemed possessed especially during "edge of seventeen"...i can see her with that feathered cap and walking around in a half circle with the mic just going off chanting "well, will you come gently in my shadow when i call you......she says, i know what it sounds like....I KNOW WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE!" then Sharon comes rushing over for the last verse and i think Stevie almost threw her right off track cause her singing kind of almost cut into the next verse....Sharon was probably like "well, should i go back or are you going to let me sing?!" Stevie was VERY eager to sing in those days...i think every other line in that tour started off with "well well well...."

I think it was probably "Juliet"....she also previewed "Whole Lotta Trouble" either in Chicago or Jones Beach....in between songs when she was walking off the stage she went to one of the girl's mics and sang "well this could be a whole lotta trouble for YOU!"

Surely, if Stevie had continued on that trajectory, she wouldn't be alive today.
I have a huge amount of affection for that time period, and kind of wish we'd see more examples of that wildness again. But then, it was nearly 20 years ago, and she's in an entirely different place.
I guess it's apples and oranges, really, and we probably shouldn't even compare the two eras, since Stevie is pretty much an entirely different person from those days.
Some would say she's better now... others would vehemently disagree.
As much as I love her just as she is today, I will always have a place in my heart for the days when Stevie was rocking far more than just a little. :)

I always thought that in the Red Rocks No Spoken Word, that I heard the F-word escape her lips. At least I am not the only one who thought this.

Well well! I loved it when Stevie used to bleat a few well placed "wells" into her RAL era performances. that was sooooooo cool!!!! OK, since we have brought up Jones Beach from 1986, can anyone explain what she was babbling about in between B&TB and L&L? Something like "I used to have 8, count 'em, long songs.." and then the crowd almost seems to go into an uproar as if she pissed them off. Then she's like "no, no!" and then the band starts L&L to big cheers. No matter how hard, I can't make out what she was saying, perhaps we never will know?

I am almost positive that she's saying...
"Not from the pages of a God-damn mother-f*cking book..."
No book in particular, cuz the lyrics in the recorded version are "not from the pages - ooooh of a book."

Not to attack anyone's opinions here, but we're talking about the same woman who was "extremely uncomfortable" singing the word "bitch" in a song.
I have a hard time believing she would say "G**damn" and "mother-f***ing" in one of her songs, which are so precious to her.
Now... before anyone says, "but"... I realize that Stevie HAS used the f-word on stage, when yelling at the out-of-control security guards during that Bristol, CT., show in 1989... but that was a VERY different situation, and she was angry that they were roughing up her "people."
She wasn't singing the word in one of her songs.
In that particular line of the Red Rocks version of "No Spoken Word," I really don't think she's saying anything. I think she just sort of tripped over the ad-lib, and ended up babbling instead.
"Not from the pages, no, not from the pages ~ (babble) ~ from a book!"

The song in question is No Spoken Word. Stevie's mother disliked SIAB intensely, calling it her least favorite song. I attribute that to the "bitch" quote.:)

I'm sure Stevie did and said a lot of things during this period of her life that she now regrets and/or doesn't remember. I know her swearing seems unlikely, but I swear, that's what I'M hearing....and seeing as even she refers to this performance as her most coked out ever, and immediately went to Betty Ford, anything's possible...
Oh, and one more "f" word incident that was brought to light lately - "my throat is f*cked." The woman cusses like a sailor, just maybe not in public so much....

From the first time I heard that version back in 1987, to this day, I swear that she simply trips over her ad-lib, and ends up babbling.

There's also a little rambling ditty at the HBO special, backstage of the show, I think, and she's carrying the stuffed animals...again, memory doesn't serve so well since it's been a while since I saw it, but she runs into Waddy and says something like, "Hey, motha f*cka!!" then heads out to dump the stuffed animals. Something like this anyhow...anyone else recall?

I don't think she gets that explicit...since i've posted, i have put the tape on numerous times (i need to get a life) and i'm actually watching her mouth and it appears that she's saying "not from the pages (and possibly) well that goddamn whatever whatever whatever learn from a book!" i don't think we'll ever know....just like we'll never know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop....we just have to deal with it.

Not to mention the fact that they did so much post-production on the music that it isn't even the same concert, for cripes sake! I got an upgrade of the Uncut Red Rocks boot (the old one was unlistenable) and it truly sounds like a different concert. It's quite funny to listen to, though. She kept forgetting the words to the songs and you would hear people in the audience saying "She forgot the darn words!" In the beginning of Edge of 17, some guy yells "Enough with the f*ckin' rhythm; sing the song!" And when she does...she forgets the words.
So, they did a LOT of work to it in the studio. They didn't just clean up the vocals, they completely re-dubbed most of it. The problem, though, is that they did sooooo much work to it that it doesn't even sound like Stevie; it sounds like a chipmunk.
Also, I think it's funny how they edited the video itself. The close-ups that were shot later have Stevie with a completely different hairdo than when she was onstage. And it has some bad lip-synching.

wow! i'm really getting a learning experience this week from the Ledge....i don't have the Red Rocks uncut concert...have always been meaning to get it....so, they must have redubbed her vocals?
when i first bought the video i remember thinking "why does she sound like she's on helium?" when you listen to other shows on the RAL tour she doesn't sound like that at all. it didn't make sense....NOW it makes sense.
so, back to the original thread....you mean she probably had to re-ad lib her incoherent babbling? i wonder how hard that was. i'm sure she herself said "what the hell was i saying there?"

Yeah, they re-dubbed most of the vocals. It's a good thing when you consider how bad the live vocal was to begin with. It was towards the end of the tour and her voice was pretty much shot. They got rid of a lot of the "well, well" kinda stuff, "processed" the many parts where her voice cracked (every other note!) and had to add new parts where she flubbed the lyrics. It's almost a completely different concert. I like to refer to it as "Stevie: Live In the Studio."

Very funny little exchange. :D
And gldstwmn... it's not that I don't think Stevie would ever talk like that, I just honestly don't see that as something she would sing in one of her songs. How ever coked-up and out of control she might have been at the time.
Look at the other swearing instances... on stage in Bristol, because she was severely angry at the security guards... and on those master-recordings tapes, in a studio with her friends.
Beyond that, I can't think of any other instance where she has sworn on stage, or in an interview.
She simply tried to ad-lib in "No Spoken Word," goofed, and ended up babbling. :)

I like to refer to it as "Stevie: Live In the Studio." She's destroyed so many of her products that way -- concert broadcasts like the US Festival 2, Oakland 1983 (an authentic "Beauty & the Beast" but a fake "Stand Back" & "Leather & Lace"), the Red Rocks video, the San Fran Cow Palace video from 1987, the House of Blues broadcast from 1994, etc.
The Weedsport radio show from 1986 is real, thank goodness, only it was just a standard performance.
Had Stevie or her management had any brains at that point, they would have filmed several shows, like Red Rocks & Madison Square Garden & Landover & Jones Beach, & picked the best & kept it genuine. I would have been totally pleased with a video of the great MSG or Jones Beach shows.
But when you put people like Marty Callner & Chris Nicks in charge of something, you're going to get exactly what you deserve: a "Cream Cheese Production."

i think the "stand back" from the cow palace is one of the worst vocals ever....her voice sounds so phony....there's no depth to it at all.
i still love the Red Rocks show though...there's a certain drama to it...it's like her "The Rose" you know? she may have been high on coke but she didn't seem as giddy as some of the other shows i saw that year....there was a real seriousness to that show...it's like she knew that was the end of that era for her. my favorite part is when she's spazzing out at the end of "Edge of Seventeen".
how about the Tusk documentary concert footage? Although there was no overdubbing that i can tell, they did add some additional audience noise in there. it sounds like they sped it up or something. i can hear some guy yelling "Fleetwood!" in about every song...but it's the same loop cause you can hear the same whistles over and over again. On either "Angel" or "Not That Funny" the crowd is applauding after the first few lines...it's like "yeah, ok...the audience doesn't even know what song it is"...when you listen to the soundboard the audience sounds normal. well, despite the guy that yells "ROCK AND ROLL" a million times throughout the concert most noticeably during the beginning of "Sara". I think Christine at that point even turns to see who the hell is screaming like a banshee.
