View Full Version : Can you remember the first time you beheld her?

I don't mean live, necessarily.
For me, I saw a tiny pic of Fleetwood Mac in the kiddie magazine Dynamite when I was little. From the name I thought it was a country band. I think Stevie was crouching or doing a split, and I think she was in a brown hat. (Or maybe Mick was in the hat.)
Whichever, I didn't really give Stevie much thought in terms of attraction. In the 70s I was all about crushes on brunettes: Lynda Carter, Jaclyn Smyth, etc. (though I did like the blonde sister on Eight is Enough, but I digress...). However, there WAS something about Stevie's eyes.

I remember seeing the Hold Me video years later and thinking Stevie was just another 80s video model with a made-up shiny face, though she did look great. I don't remember seeing Gypsy in those days.
My clearest first memory of being "enchanted" was seeing her in the Stand Back video. Wow. I remember staring every time the video would air.

BTW, it was not until the RAL album that I found out Stevie was not just a solo artist, but also a singer in Fleetwood Mac. That's when I realized that the hot singer in the SB, If Anyone Falls, Talk to Me, I Can't Wait videos was the same as the hot woman in the Hold Me video and the squatting blonde in Dynamite magazine, which I had long since thrown out.

When did you first set eyes on Stevie's image?

Herbie Worthington's photo on the back of Rumours. I got it for Christmas along with Toys In The Attic, Boston, Chicago and a bunch of others I can't remember right now. She had this really cool dress on and for some reason I identified with her in that photo even though we had nothing in common. My fav song then- I Don't Want To Know. I got seriously bitten in the fall of 1982 in Vail, Colorado when my loser ex-husband stole a tape deck with one frigging tape in it-Mirage. That's Alright. Yeah, it was my theme song. Of course it was a really small town then and he promptly got busted, cops at our door, causing our neighbor to flush some very expensive weed down the toilet. I think he might have been a little freaked abut his semi- underage girlfreind also. But I digress. Stevie was everywhere on MTV, on the radio and then of course The Wild Heart. There was no going back after that.

"Meet me down at the police station
I've been waiting, I'm through making bail for you"

"Flushing down the toilet

Okay, I'll stop.

BTW, shouldn't you have gotten the White Album in Vail? Isn't Colorado (Aspen) where Landslide was written? Wrong tape deck!

(BTW, no way are you old enough to have been married in '82.)

I've loved music for as long as I could remember....at the age of 8 or 9...I knew 'of' Stevie....and I thought she was this "cool...hippie....Bohemian kinda chick...who dressed real funky"...and when I was bored I would put my parents stereo on and sing along to the songs on the AM radio stations...(FM radio was just beginning to become successful....Christ, I'm showing my age:rolleyes: )....and I have vivid memories of me singing Dreams pretending I was dressed as 'that cool hippie chick'.

Fast forward to the age of 13....I saw Stevie Nicks' concert on HBO when it premiered and for the next hour I was MESMERIZED...It truly was like watching a rock and roll 'angel'....and suddenly, she was everything I wanted to be...Blonde, beautiful, graceful, spirited...I studied EVERYTHING....every facial expression fit the song....She was smiling and dancing and laughing through "Gold and Braid"...After "Dreams"....she smiled with nostalgia as a single tear fell from her eye....During "Sara"....you could see memories coming and going throughout her mind...and the sadness in "Rhiannon" as her concert came to and end..."She in all her magic" didn't want the night to end.

I immediately bought Bella Donna....and truly believed every song was written for me....I could apply any song to any circumstance in my life and throughout my adolecence (and all the crap that goes along with it:) ) Stevie became my sanctuary....my big sister...my guardian angel...and fairy godmother all rolled into one...She 'helped' me through my parents divorce....break-ups with boyfriends...feeling 'outcast' in high school...and even all the way up until I thought my own marriage was going to fail.

Now my life is 'on track'....and I may not "need" her guidance as much as I use to....but everytime I hear a Stevie 'classic'....I'm literally thrown back in time and I'm 16 again and living in my "lavender" bedroom...with my bed on the floor and my posters all over the wall...and I see my little 'shrine' to Stevie...and the memories come flooding back....and i'm home :)

Hey, who needs a 'shrink' when you have Stevie

Ditto (what TwoTricky said)....

A friend of mine's parents had the FM white album, we used to listen to that a lot - and I also still remember the first time I heard Rhiannon on the radio - I thought "who IS this chick with the cool voice and what is she saying? Breathe on and on? Huh?" LOL

When Rumours came out, it was on my Hanukkah list - along with KC & the Sunshine Band's greatest hits, Barry Manilow's greatest hits, the soundtrack to A Star is Born, and the KISS Alive II album. My mom bought me all of them, and my musical taste remains as eclectic....

The first time I saw Stevie perform live in person, was October 31, 1982 in Austin, TX. I was completely mesmerized!!

the first time I saw Stevie was when I was shopping with my mom and saw the cover of "The Wild Heart." I remember thinking that that woman is the most beautiful woman in the world. I still stand by my first impression. I also put it together later that that was the same woman who was on the cover of the Rumours album which every one of my friends' parents had a copy of. Interesting...

Married said fool six months after this happened at the age of nineteen. Then my favorite record in the whole world, The Wild Heart comes out which, according to Miss Nicks is all about falling in love, right? Well that was the record I got divorced to. I just kept singing Stand Back.

I was 10 years old and listened to the radio constantly, back when radio was beyond cool and stations actually played songs other than the "hits". I fell in love with Over My Head & Rhiannon, and Monday Morning, Landslide, and Crystal too. I was so totally amazed that there were three different singers in the band and that two of them were women! I begged my mother to buy me the "White Album". She did, but was none too happy with how scruffy the band looked on the back of the album! I believe she may have used the word "hippies". I played the album over and over again, every single day. Then I saw them on the Midnight Special and there was Chris--looking so cool and elegant playing her keyboards and stuff and there was Stevie swirling and twirling away in her black costumes with the long drapey sleeves. I was fascinated. By the time Rumours came out, I was a diehard fan. And have been ever since. Both Stevie and Christine had an huge impact on my personal sense of style. They just both looked so cool, and so amazing in the photos that were in the album insert of Rumours. I studied those pictures for hours on end! Despite the fact that I had no musical talent whatsoever, I wanted to be those girls! And you know, I think I still do! Let's just say that we've been through a lot together through the years and that Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks have been the soundtrack of my life! At 12, I may not have understood the huge breaking-up saga that inspired Rumours, but I loved those songs. As an older, wiser adult who has been through a couple of heartbreaks and quite a few heartaches, I not only love those songs, I can identify with the words and the emotions behind them and I love them even more now than I did then!

the first time i paid any attention, was when Big Love's video was beginning to be played on tv.
i saw this band with those two girls, who don't even sing! i remember thinking just how cool it is for a group, having two chicks just for the sake of coolness itself! they were just like the Human League!!!

I was working in a record store (around Christmas of 1973) and as I was filing the new stock of LPs that came in, I saw the Buckingham Nicks album in the "misc B" section of our store...I opened the album to play in the store (eventually bought that very album), before side one of the LP had ended, I'd taken three orders for the album (since the one I opened was the only copy we'd had in stock).

Fleetwood Mac has always been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I remember my parents listening to the White album and also Rumours. Me names Steph after Stevie so she's always been with me in a roundabout way.

It was WAY back in 1997... I was 13 at that time... I had a terrible day at school and came home and fell on the couch and slept with the tv on VH1... Then all of a sudden I woke up and saw this beautiful woman on tv singing "you could be my silver springs"... Then I saw the rest of the band..

I said to myself who is the new band, wait they are too old to be a new band... Then I saw the rest of the performance, her and lindsey singing(yelling) to each other at the end of "silver springs"... Then I saw the name Fleetwood Mac.. I had never heard of them..

I wanted to get the single of "Silver Spring" but they didn't have one so my mother bought me "The Dance" for christmas... and the rest is history...

I know we had some Fleetwood Mac around the house when I was little but I don't remember my parents playing it all that often. I remember my mom's best friend's husband (Uncle Bob and Aunt Linda) who is now deceased, used to be in love with Stevie Nicks. I was little..I mean like, 3 or 4...and I used to sit there and watch TV as my mom would clean downstairs. She would turn on MTV or VH1 and I'd sit and sing along or dance or whatever. And I saw Gypsy. Then I saw Hold Me. I saw Little Lies (I did the Lindsey straddle thingy..lol). I saw Stand Back. And I loved it. It used to be me, my ballet slippers, my moms full length mirror and me imitating Stevie a la Gypsy....I was such the little dorkus. I've been hooked on Stevie and Fleetwood Mac ever since. The first music other than little kids stuff my parents ever bought me was Fleetwood Mac's greatest hits because they knew how much I loved them and adored Stevie  I also remember very vividly...it was the night of the super bowl and the Disney Channel was showing Fleetwood Mac Going Home. I had my friends Heather and Lindsay sleep over and we watched. It's amazing how much it was a part of my childhood...good memories of the Mac

The first time I ever "saw" Stevie was on the Rumors album cover. (my mom listened to it alot) I really loved that music~~~ ~~~Once Stevie went solo and I bought the Bella Donna album I was hooked. I used to obsess over the pictures. I thought(and still do) she and the girls were soooo beautiful. I've been a die hard fan ever since.

My first Stevie memory is when I was about 10 years old and my parents finally got cable tv. I was so excited to be able to watch MTV and VH1 that that was about all I did. I very vividly remember seeing the "Little Lies" video over and over again and wondering why were there two blond haired women in the group and who were they.

At 15 (in 1995), I was curious about hearing as much music as possible when I randomely checked out the white album from the library. They had me from "Monday morning you sure looked fine...", but Stevie drew me in most of all. I was blown away and instantly knew I wanted to hear everything she had ever done and that this was not going to be a fleeting thing. I had never heard anyone who made me FEEL so deeply or expressed emotion in a way that I found so understandable. Her voice IS her emotions...it has never sounded "bad", but has been a mirror of what she was going through. I could never find words to explain what her lyrics mean to me, yet she can sing "ooooh" in a certain way and make me cry (or smile). So the first photo I ever knowingly saw of her/FM was that great, grainy bathroom shot on the back cover. A local video store had Tusk Documentary and In Concert, so my very first time seeing Stevie on stage was THAT Sisters Of The Moon. What can I say? Life has literally never been the same since.:)

Umm...I guess you could say I was kind of late-comer to Stevie Nicks fandom.

I only vaguely knew who she was until around 1999 (after the Enchanted box set came out). Before that, I had grown up hearing "Gypsy" and "Sara" on the radio, and I knew who Fleetwood Mac was, but I don't think I ever knew any of their names. I was aware of The Dance reunion and remember hearing "Silver Springs" and "Landslide" on the radio around that time, and I kind of knew who she was then.

The first picture I remember seeing of her was a pic of the "Rooms on Fire" single in one of those Billboard Top 40 books while I was browsing in a bookstore. I think that was around 1996 or so, and I remember thinking that she was one of those '80s "hair metal" women, like Lita Ford.

Anyway...I really became aware of who she was (and became a total fan at the same time) when VH-1 started doing all that promotional stuff for the Enchanted box set and tour. I think that's when they first showed her "Behind the Music" and "Storytellers" episodes. I went out and bought The Dance and Bella Donna, and waited in anticipation for Trouble in Shangri-La to come out (I think they were talking about that one for about 2 years before they finallly released it...same way with Say You Will).

I had strict parents (who I totally love and don't resent, BTW!) who wouldn't allow me to watch MTV until I was 13 (in Dec. of 1987). One of the first videos I saw was Little Lies. I admit at the time I got Stevie and Chris confused, and I had no concept of the greatness that was FM - its history or anything else about it, really. But that was the first time I saw Stevie. :) Pretty anti-climactic after some of you guys' stories, lol.

I have no idea how old I was, very very early memory, but I just remember the Gypsy video (odd since I was born in 1982), but I remember seeing her walking through the enchanted forrest and ever since any time I heard that song I would have that picture in my mind, I didn't realize why until this year when I watched BTM and saw a clip of it along with some clips on VH1s greatest. I was way to into Madonna in the 80s to take much notice of Stevie or FM except to know that Gypsy was one of my favorite songs to dance around my room to. I also vaguely remember her RAL album cover since my mom played it in her car. In fact only now looking back do I realize how often FM was in my life and I just didn't know it, when the Dance came out I rediscovered FM after laughing through LB's My Little Demon and deciding that FM had done more then Gypsy (gee duh!). After going to my first FM concert in oakland I am now a diehard FM fan, just wish I had "discovered" them sooner. And as for Stevie her songs have a special place in my more adult life, they have always seemed to find me when I really needed them, Sweet Girl, Rhiannon, Edge of 17, Silver Springs, Beautiful Child, Destiny Rules, If Anyone Falls, and Sometimes it's a Bitch...

My first Stevie memory was seeing her in the "Hold Me" video as a toddler. My parents stuck me in front of MTV at a young age and it was actually a huge factor into why I was able to read at 2 1/2. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. So I remember a lot of the old videos. Of course I don't remember like the premiere of "Hold Me" or anything~ I was only a year old when Mirage came out~ but I do remember seeing it at a very young age. I remember the red dress in the desert very distinctly.

The first time I remember seeing Stevie, or Fleetwood Mac, for that matter, was when TITN was released. I was about 2 yrs old, and I played the heck out of my little cassette, which was played in my little Fisher Price tape player, of course :D. Anyways, my two older sisters would always end up taking the TITN tape away because I played it wayyyyy too often for them...... so I would proceed to cry until they showed me pictures of the band.... I was especially fond of Stevie, I thought she was pretty .
Eventually I misplaced my TITN tape, I grew up listening to :shudders: NKOTB, Spice Girls, etc  :o .... that is until 1997. I was watching TV with my parents when my dad switched over to VH-1, he was amazed that Fleetwood Mac had reunited.... I, on the other hand was less than amused..... I was 11 almost 12 at the time, extremely snotty/bratty, etc... and when a close-up of Stevie came on the screen I said "She's fat...." ( to this day, I cannot believe I ever said that!!) And when my dad told me what little knowledge he had about Stevie and Lindsey's relationship, and as I saw Stevie looking at Lindsey, and singing directly AT him... I was like "whoa, she needs to get over it..... move on, whatever"..(Look at me now, lol, total Stevie/Lindsey romantic, :) ) One thing is for sure, the music did affect me, The Dance concert on VH-1 did affect me (although I would have never admitted it at the time)..... from that day on I stole my dad's copy of Rumours, and really never looked back..... there was some sort of connection I found with FM.... And, I eventually found the "missing" Tango tape, stashed away in some forgotten dresser (gee, thanks sisters!!)

I'm starting to feel positively decrepit!

The first time I saw Stevie was on the Rumours cover, but that's not the one I recall making the most impact.

I do, however distinctly remember this:

1978 - I was 15 and had this friend whose parents were divorced (*gasp!*, so scandalous!) and her mother had sorta become the town trollop and didn't police the goings on at her house very well. Natch, myself, coming from very strict surroundings and wanting to rebel, would find excuses to spend time with said girl because we could get away with LOTS at her house.
So, having given you the necessary background to set up this scene, I very clearly recall sitting cross-legged in a round, olive-green crushed-velvet swivel chair (honey, please! lol!) at this girl's house, drinking cherry vodka and Sprite (GAG!) and looking over and seeing a stack of Rolling Stone magazines. Oh goody! I am NEVER allowed to see these! On top is the "In Bed With Fleetwood Mac" cover. I think Stevie is cute as a bug and Lindsey is hot. Why aren't they lying together? I read the article and finished my drink while my friend talked on the phone to a guy who was in jail...... she was 15, he's was like, 24. I can now admit that I was hanging with some major trash, but hey, I was 15 and restless. What did I know?

I'm telling you I could write a book about some of the people I know....... but anyway, I was hoplessly hooked after reading that article, and it was worth the restriction and grounding I got after that for being over there drinking cherry vodka and Sprite. I swear I still get that taste in my mouth when I see that cover!

I'm telling you I could write a book about some of the people I know

I hear ya! Someone DID write a book about a girl I went to high school with...after she graduated (8 months pregnant in her graduation gown), she somehow hooked up with the WRONG guy - they went on a crime spree, robbing, killing, evading police, kinda like Bonnie and Clyde. It's really an incredible story. Shoot, I can't remember the title of the book now, something w/ Wolf in the title, cuz the dude had a wolf tattoo. Anyway, seeing her mug shot, trial pics and the name of my high school in that book was bone chilling!

Cherry vodka and sprite kinda sounds good to me! I like Absolut Mandarin vodka in cherry limeades from Sonic.
