I have to say then you probably should not participate in such discussions  People here joke about that alot, esp. lately and you are right there with them in alot of it. So, if you swim in the pool you really have no grounds to complain about getting wet

I am not trying to slam you, I am just saying it seems to me that if I join in a conversation where people are ragging each other about that, then I have no right to complain.

But, now people know not to discuss that with you.

But that is just the thing - most people here do not differentiate when in jest someone says they are gay or straight. In fact, it is a little rude when people do take offense. I mean it makes being gay seem like it is a dirty thing and the gay people are going to be threatened if they dare joke with the straight people about it. To me, it is the same as the straight people beating up the gay people on the playground at school just because they are gay or, an admittedly lesser extreme example, straight people saying "I do not mind someone being gay - but I will never vote to allow them to be a first class citizen like us straight people." I think both of those latter events are outrageous  I mean Curtis never got huffy when it was suggested that he was straight - I think the mindset is it is gross to be gay - that hurts people and it is generally not the mindset around here

Food for Thought - and not proffered with a condescending tone

I don't want to say it really bothers me getting hit on by a chick, but yes it IS a tad uncomfortable. I won't lie. Sometimes people who don't have many gay friends, it takes a while to get used to it. I am not completely used to it even. But I guess I shouldn't jump to conclusions, I don't know if certain people have gay friends or not. It's all just another change in society that was inevitable.

Food for Thought - and not proffered with a condescending tone :cool:Thank you for that, Jason. You said it well. I know y'all said you didn't want to make a big issue of this, but I find it really upsetting and this is the only place online I feel I can be completely honest without someone jumping down my throat, or nearly doing that. Curtis would not get upset if someone thought he was straight, and I would not get upset if a guy flirted with me. It's fine. I'm not going to say "Ewwwwww no! I would never think of a guy that way!" For one, that might be just a tad hurtful to the guy, and secondly, I think we're all lying to ourselves if we say we've never thought of both a guy and a girl in that way at some point in our lives. It's not like I can't look at a guy and say he's sexy. I'm not afraid someone's going to say, "You're straight!" It doesn't really matter. And I flirted with both Amber and Krista last night (okay, we'll just have to embellish a bit and pretend that what I do can actually be considered flirting) but neither one of them appeared to be remotely offended, and both are heterosexual.

And I won't rack my brains trying to determine the gender and sexual orientation of the person I'm talking to on here. It's always nice to know, but I wouldn't force it out of anyone because I don't see how it's necessary to know. I had a little crush on someone from another message board last summer but I didn't even know the person's gender. I found out a month later that it was a guy. I found it amusing that it had been a guy and I'm a lesbian, but I wasn't repulsed. Even though I would only date girls, it was kind of an eye-opener to me--an indication that it's the person that matters the most, not the gender.

And I'm not angry with you, 1/2 insane. I don't want you to think that. I just really want to get my feelings out and be heard. This subject matter hits oh so close to home.

I am glad you said what you felt. I can't help but try to figure people out. I think i am getting mistaken for "judging" people (not in a bad way). I am not trying to do that. I just joined this to basically meet other people who are into THE MAC. Maybe make some friends...But I will not lie, I will still be trying to figure people out. Please. Did I say I hated anyone because they were gay? No. The whole thing got started when The Tower made what I thought was a gesture towards me. If it was a mistake I said “I’m sorry.” I even deleted my post. Hell I don’t remember. Can we PLEASE just let it go already. I stated my opinion and that’s all it is. Lets not make something out of it that it doesn’t have to be. I’m sorry Hillary. That’s all I can say is “I’m sorry.” “I’m sorry.” What else do I need to say?

I was under the impression you were a nurse (or studying to be one) but then I think you posted that you were an English or history student. May I ask how you came to collect stethoscopes?Sure! Thanks for asking! When I was a little girl I had one of those Fisher-Price Doctor's Kits that had the working stethoscope. I was absolutely fascinated with it and would spend an inordinate amount of time listening to my heart. It would soothe me when I was restless and put me to sleep. When I was old enough to go off to school, the first thing that was on my mind was asking other people if I could listen to their hearts. Through the years, I've been doing that with relatively close friends. I didn't know exactly what it meant to me when I was little, but now it's the thing that keeps me sane and grounded. It's what I hold onto; it's one of the few consistent things in life. Listening forces me to stop agonizing over inconsequential things and focus on life itself, which I'd say is the most important thing, and that is so easy to forget. And listening to other people's hearts is wonderful to me, a unique and memorable way to connect with someone and to appreciate that person's presence in my life. I also believe the heart has a spiritual significance, though that belief is very difficult to explain. I feel like listening to hearts connects me to something bigger than just me, and that can be interpreted different ways. Perhaps it could be indication that there is a God, or maybe it's just that hearts are representative of the human spirit to me, which I really do believe is immortal.

So, well, I know that was long, but I just love to talk about this when someone asks. I guess it's unnecessary to point out after all that that my obsession has led me to collect stethoscopes. I have a teaching stethoscope that has two binaurals so that two people can listen to one heart at the same time, and her name is Bella Donna. I also have one named Sara and another named Stevie. :)

A few years ago, I discovered that there are thousands (maybe millions) of people out there who share my passion. There are several Yahoo groups for nutcases like me  and I decided to start one called "perfect_iambic_rhythm." I have to say that I was disappointed to find that lots of people out there who are into it view it as a fetish. I can't help but think of that as a shallow way to look at it. But, there are also quite a few people I've encountered who went into the medical profession because they loved listening to hearts so much for many of the same reasons I do. I did consider being a cardiologist for awhile, but I eventually abandoned that aspiration because I suck at science and math. (Especially math). I also think that the medical profession could easily corrupt someone so naive as myself who has this romantic (in the Hawthorne or Emerson sense, not the candy and flowers sense) vision of the heart. Some of the realities might be hard for me to take. So, yeah, I'm an English major and History minor. (I'm flattered that you remembered all that!)

Now, y'all remember that friend I mentioned in the other thread in the Stevie forum? Suze and I were talking about her. If only I could be brave enough to tell her all of this, maybe she would let me listen to her heart and she would listen to mine. If I could just open my mouth about it. But it seems so involved and lengthy to explain. I get so shy around pretty much everyone. I've got like 16 stethoscopes lying around, and they should be put to use!

Okay, I'm finished rambling about it. Only on The Ledge.

Bless all of you who take the time to read this, and thank you so much, too! :)

Thanks -- I agree about Jon! That Crossfire was priceless... I was dying when he served Bowtie Boy ;).That was priceless!

If you don't mind my asking, are you talking about your blabbermouth friend or someone else?

If you don't mind my asking, are you talking about your blabbermouth friend or someone else?I don't mind your asking at all! You mean the blabbermouth friend who told my crush that I liked her and ruined everything, right? No, I'm not talking about her. She and I aren't all that close. (And certainly not anymore). It's actually one of my more bizarre relationships--it's a woman who used to be one of my teachers and is over thirty years older than me. (Those facts can both help and hurt my case. )

That's the "friend" I was talking about. It didn't sound like you were talking about her, but I wanted to be sure.

Now I remember this woman. I consider many of my professors to be close friends. They're great confidants in many ways.

I suppose I might have. Anyway, thanks for talking with me about it, Krista. Just talking about it on here makes it easier to imagine bringing it up to someone in person some day.

And I totally agree about professors. I have learned so much from many of mine, inside and outside of the classroom.

^ Likes the Gypsy video?

I'm not a fan of that video. Everyone always freaks out over it, but it's always left me cold. I haaaaate when she all runs out into the rain and has her arms out and it pauses on her. Reminds me of Lucille Ball. For some reason, I haaaate that part.
