WHEW this place is gettin' me down lately, let's get back to the music for a little while...
I think this song REALLY hits its stride when done live for some reason! When I heard it on the album I thought it ws only OK. But these live versions are cool! Is it a little faster? There's a darkness in it that I just don't get on the album. Of course I could do without the backup singers (a bit more Lindsey, please!), but I'm diggin' Lindsey's jangling cowboy guitar on the live version, seems stronger somehow...makes me picture Stevie in a leather duster ridin' her horse alone on a dusty, windblown trail.
Thoughts? :wavey:

I loved this song on very first listen. I was thrilled when I heard it done live. I'm terribly disappointed that it has been dropped from the set list. It kicks ass.

AGREED, girl!!! I saw it live in DC and man, Stevie was SWINGIN' that mic Lindsey's way, singing it to him and then swining it back. It was GREAT. They were all really into it. I'm sad it was dropped because I love this song. Okay, well, I think we've established I just love the album as do most of you on here.
On a side not, Is anyone else aside from me a fan of the Thrown Down Wall of Sound version??? I know a lot of people think it's too "produced" but I actually really enjoy both versions of the song a lot. I love the backing vocals on the WOS version..."so overwhelming baby..there's nothing left to say....don't say you're sorry baby...think you should walk away..." LAWD!!! I mean. Wow. I can see why they don't play this in concert...WAY INTENSE ;)

This was one of my favorites from the new CD. The first show that I was able to see on this tour was the Cleveland show. That was the show where it was dropped and never brought back in the tour since.:(
I got to talk to Mick Fleetwood in Miami (No, I did not get to meet any other Mac members :() and he did say that the song would be coming back into the set list with the full drum kit. He did not say when they were going to add it back in the set list, however.

ME! :wavey:
I like the new lyric on the album and I like Stevie's delivery of it, but on the whole I like the parts Stevie and Lindsey are singing on the WOS version MUCH more. Lindsey's guitar part on the WOS version just drives the song along. To me, it has a real urgency that the album version doesn't have. And Lindsey's BG vocal at the very end is fabo!!!!

YES!! His background vocals are AMAZING. I like both versions a lot but I really do enjoy his backing vocals on WOS. He's almost screaming the lyrics...very intense!!! I think i'll go have a listen  Anyone know where I can get the original angry Stevie version of Smile At You?? I'd love to hear it. I gave all of my demos to a friend because i'd never had a chance to listen. There were like, 30 tapes--i told him to just keep em'...i regret it now!! If you can send me an MP3, PM me!!

I love the WOS version. Especially Lindsey's guitar. I think they should have taken Stevie's vocals from the album version and the arrangement from the WOS...

I think the WOS of TD version is great. But I also think the final SYW version is way better again. The sound from the WOS version is something I can get from other srtists - but the SYW version (not to mention the new verse) was pure Buckingham Nicks / Fleetwood Mac goodness.

I love this song apart from the opening bars... Stevie's voice just sounds a bit weird to me.

Pip Phew I'm glad someone else said it ;) I felt guilty last time I said it so I've treaded carefully. It's the only downside though, and even then it's not much.
But now I find I like the bridge even moe than the outro. The bridge is fantastic! It's TOTALLY different from the Illume one - it's amazing how she/Lindsey did that.

My thoughts exactly. Great song, but they surely could have cleaned up the beginning a bit. It sounds so muddled. I love the TD WOS version too, but not as much as the album version. It's fun to put on every once in a while when I'm in the mood for something different.

At first I wasn't crazy about Stevie's voice on it, but I was totally into Lindsey's guitar - esp. at the almost end of the song, where he takes it up a key - or whatever you call what he does! And then Stevie's voice on it grew on me, too....But I wonder how it would have sounded if she didn't sing it so low......
But overall, I think it is one the best songs from her....and some of Lindsey's best guitar work as well.

I love Destiny Rules! Very cool song. I love the way she sings "Like a diamond snake in a black sky" for some reason. I don't like it live though. I think live it sounds rushed and monotonous. Like, the whole song sounds the same, even the bridge, up until the end with Lindsey's guitar. It just didn't translate well live. Plus, I think the background singers ruin the song.
I prefer the WOS version of Thrown Down. I love the guitar work much better and the vocals are more powerful. On SYW, the vocals are pretty weak; I was waiting for one of them to kick it into gear. And it seems like it was chopped up because of time constraints. The ending on the WOS version is unparalleled in greatness, too! :p

I love Destiny Rules. The only thing about it that's weird to me, although it doesn't bother me, is Stevie really accents all the 'k' sounds in the song. "Six weeks in a foreign Country," "I look up to your balCony," and ESPECIALLY "Like a diamond snaKe." Anyone else notice?
As for Thrown Down (or as every media outlet says, "Throwdown") I was really disappointed at first that they changed the wall of sound version, but now I like the album version better. Even though the WOS version is more rock-ish, the tempo on the album is just a TINY bit faster and makes the song flow better. I listened to the WOS version the other day and realized just how slow she sings on it..."He fell for her agaaaaaaain she watched it happen." I still like both, but now I like the album version better.
