I recently went to the Continental Arena show - it was awesome! I couldn't help but notice on several occasions that when Lindsey started beating the hell out of his guitar during the come and So Afraid solos that the solos continued perfectly without missing a note - meanwhile he was clawing away in a manner that did not make sense to the sound coming from his guitar. I found this odd and was curious if any of the performances were in some sense 'fake'. I am hoping it was the backup guitar players filling in, but it seemed very suspicious at times.

I am not sure and I have had the same question Jeff. I do know that he has back up guitar players, he always has, so I think that must be the way that it is done. As for lip syncing...welll...Stevie cannot remember the words well enough for that. She changed Goodbye Baby in DC, and is forever doing that..hahaha...

Everybody uses pre-recorded tracks in live shows. I think it sucks but nobody cares anymore. Just don't lip sync to somebody else's vocals and you'll get a pass. As for the backup musicians, that's lame too if they do most of the playing.

I think some of the vocals may be tracks as well. Not the leads, but maybe some harmony. I base this on Stevie's Letterman appearance during the Street Angel tour. You can definitelty hear Stevie doing a higher harmony over the lower lead she is actually singing. it is really apparent in the "Some I'm going away for a little while to remember how to feel" lines. They may have added this in post-production, but I thought I heard it in concert as well.

I don't like how they keep the phantom drummer dude completely HIDDEN behind Mick until they do the band intros. Cheap Trick used to do that w/ a keyboard player they had...

Why they even NEED extra drummer(s) is beyond me. Isn't Mick powerful enough? Can't they just amp up his kit if he's not loud enough? They should re-name this tour the "Fleetwood Mac and Friends" Tour. It's getting so there's more friends than Macsters. Let's bring in Sheryl Crow and Babs Streisand and throw in a little Carrot Top and Bob Barker as well. I mean ---

Im not sure what she did with Robin, Strand, but you are correct in that they did work together.

Most of the bands I see DONT use "tracks" "overdubs" whatever they are called... I wish they wouldnt either.

Tripped me out the first time I saw the TISL tour, how Stevie would have Bootylicious EO17 >TISL intro and you'd hear her -- but it wasnt her. Just the overdub track to start it off while she got onstage > Stop Draggin My Heart Around.

To the original question, it's highly unlikely that pre-recorded music is being used for Lindsey's solos. Same goes for the backup up guitarists. Solos are by nature improvisational and even songs like Go Your Own Way, which have become so familiar, will change from show to show because of the solos. When Lindsey is beating the crap out of the guitar, he is hitting it just at the right spot so that the sound he wants is coming out. If you hit the string at the fret with your left hand and do nothing with your right hand, you may still get certain sounds.

While I don't think any of FM's show is progammed, I thought I did see Neale playing parts of one song while Lindsey was pawing his guitar in Columbus. I like the fact that FM has a percussionist and other backing musicians. I think it gives them a fuller sound but dosen't detract from their sound at all. A lot of artists use programmed parts for their shows. Van Halen used to do it for the intro to Jump. Why hire somebody to play keys for just one song? As for the two drummer thing, The Dead has two drummers, it's fun to watch them play. There are other bands that do this as well, although I can't recall who right now. And for a completely programmed show, one example would be the Spice Girls. Those chics never sang a live note (like you didn't already know that). :D Stevie's performance of Stand Back on Solid Gold about 20 years ago was a live vocal over the rest of the studio track. Wonder how the band felt about that? I believe some of Aerosmith's show is programmed as well. I'm sure there are alot of others.

No doubt about it they are totally LIVE! I know they have some recordings of sounds that they cannot mimick, like for example, the extra sounds on Peacekeeper. But as for singing its all live. As for Lindsey and his guitar..there are two others playing in the back and during my first show I did see Ray Lindsey behind the scenes in the sound area, playing some backup perhaps.
But the Lindsman does most of it himself with those awesome hands and fingers of his...yum. Ok back to the subject...yes they are live. :)

When I saw VH on their first tour with Sammy, Eddie played the keyboard part live, with his guitar slung over his back...the only time he played GUITAR on the song was when he did the solo.(likewise, when I saw David Lee Roth on HIS first solo tour, he had our beloved Brett Tuggle playing keyboards..."Jump" was in his set list, then, too.)

Why would a band program "parts", then STILL spend money on hiring additional folks? Doesn't make sense. Well, come to think of it, I guess, from what I read, the marching band on "Tusk" is programmed, but I seriously doubt that anything else is.

As far as "what you see is not what you hear"...there's just so many things that guitar players can do to get certain sounds that just LOOK like they're not making those sounds, but they ARE.

No - its not that one. It is the one from the live VHS concert of the Bella Donna Tour that was officially released (one of the first things like this ever I might add).

Did anybody hear the Buffalo soundboard recording? There are some wierd voices on the chorus of Peacekeeper that don't exactly sound live. I'm really not sure what they are actually.

What is a sound board recording. I have a bootleg of the show that an audience member recorded. Is that the same thing?

So, the same Edge that we have on the Enchanted box set? That sounds live to me.

there are taped background vocals on the live version of "Peacekeeper", I can hear that clearly on one of the bootlegs I have heard ("Buffalo, NY")...And possibly there are also taped background vocals on "Say Goodbye", Otherwise it's "Live...And not Memorex", LOL....

I've got parts of the soundboard recording, and if you ask me the whole thing sounds a bit off. it just sounds like they had the backup singers turned up more than Stevie and Lindsey. I don't know if that's what it is, but i have to agree it sounds odd.

Some of what is going around as soundboard, is not really soundboard. Some of it was done with satelite hook up that is too complicated for me to explain, even though it was explained to me...just not something that I understand. And, I don't know if any of your bought the "studio" vs of some of the Dance songs, which were actually the middle track only...just their voices...lots of that mess hits. but, the ones that are being called soundboards, some of them, are really good, but, you will notice some things that should not be there and some that should.

And, to the person who asked what they are, I think that it is where someone can plug directly into the sound board with their recording device, that platform so far back from the band that regulates how they sound, and then record from it. I have also heard that this may not be stereo ,,, not sure...any comments?

I would LOVE to know that name of this duet. I saw Cheap Trick last year in Austin, they rocked!!

According to amazon.com, it is on the self titled album and the song is called "Can You Keep A Secret." It apparently was produced by Jimmy Iovine and features Stevie Nicks in harmony and Mike Campbell (a Heartbreaker) on guitar.

The buffalo show is a recording from a Alternate listening device. They are like hearing aids, given to people in the audience with poor hearing or dissabilities of the sort. You can record what you hear through the ALD via satellite. I have a friend who asked the "source" what exactly of a recording it is.

Yea from the few bootleg shows I've heard, it all sounds totally genuine and real. In both of those songs I can hear at least one backup guitarist throughout, so even if LB wasn't playing anything at all you would have continued to hear the sound of guitar(s). Also, I can't help but to think that maybe part of the reason why he changed the key of Come to E for the live versions was (apart from the obvious...i.e. to make it easier to sing!) to be able to do that pawing....if he just paws with both hands at open strings...then 4 of the 6 strings will still be in the right key with the rest of the song, and it actually (crudely) makes that "mass of noise" fit in (surprisingly) with the rest of the song. i.e. Most people watching must be thinking "how come he's ripping the strings out of the guitar like a madman and yet it STILL sounds good??"....well..that's the answer!

Someone mentioned VanHalen and Jump. Technically that is live. They have a sequencer playing that synth parts but the sounds arn't on a tape, basically a computer is playing the synthesizer along with them. I'm sure some of the FM concert the Keyboardist might have been using a sequencer since if there's more than one key's track he can't play two at the same time. Especially during someting like stand back since you can't play the bass line and chords at the same time part of it was sequenced, but that still means it's live!
