...Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey or Stevie? (I'm sure this question has been asked before)

For me, it was Fleetwood Mac in 1987. "Big Love" grabbed my attention and then it was full steam ahead! :blob2: Next was Lindsey's solo work, then Stevie...whose solo albums I had a hard time getting into at first, but now cannot live without!

Second part of my question: How long were you a fan before you saw FM/Lindsey/Stevie live? I became a fan in April of '87 and saw them in October of that year during the "Shake the Cage" tour with Billy and Rick. (no comment -- other than "no Lindsey, no fun"!)

Cheers!

I was 12 when TITN came out, just about to become a "hair-band" fan (oh, when I think of the time I wasted:( )
Anyway, I remember Little Lies first, I really liked it. Then I heard 7 Wonders & WOW - it blew me away, I loved it! Hated Big Love, though, especially the video with Stevie flapping her skirt furiously & that strange woman grunting with Lindsey!
But the FIRST time I remember anything of any of them, I was 8: Stevie - Stand Back! What a classic from the start of MTV (that's probably why I remember it so clearly - I watched MTV all the time when they used to actually play videos) My first video memories are Stevie, Prince "Little Red Corvette" & Pat Benetar "Love is a Battlefield"

I was in someone's car in 1981 when Stop Draggin' came on. I thought "who is this chic?" She didn't sound like Stevie of Fleetwood Mac. The next year I was living in Vail, CO and we didn't get tv unless we had cable. MTV came with it. Gypsy and Sara were constant staples. I had this cassete player with one tape in it. It was Mirage. My favoirite song was That's Alright. I first saw Stevie on the Wild Heart Tour here in Denver in, what '83? Joe Walsh opened for her and the next day, according to her Timespace booklet was the day they took that infamous drive to the drinking fountain and she wrote Has Anyone Ever Written. It was a great show.

Oops, forgot part 2 of the question, I was getting lost in my memories...

As I said, I got into other music for a while. When The Dance came out, that was it. I was hooked. I saw my first Mac show in 1997 & never looked back. First Stevie show in 2001. Went to three shows for SYW in 2003. Loving every minute of it.

The Mac did from as long as I can remember (my Dad named me Steph after you know who). However, my first memories of their songs - Leather & Lace (Stevie solo I know). Then I remember Gypsy & Hold Me. I wasnt old enough to know what being a true die-hard-raging fan is though... so that credit goes to Tango for me.

EXACTLY the same for me.....! I'd heard The Chain for several years before then during the beginning of the Formula One show (without knowing who FM were)...but in 1987 Big Love (and then immediately the TITN album) was what got me into Fleetwood Mac.

The first tape I ever bought was in junior high and it was TITN. I loved "Seven Wonders". I became hooked (again) when I saw the BTM for the Mac. Back then, I was so clueless, I didn't even realize that it was the same band from my junior high days! After BTM, I went out and bought Rumours, and have been hooked ever since!!

Back in 1982, when I was 11 years old, I saw the Hold Me video on MTV. Lindsey was the man!!!!! I fell in love with his blue eyes and watched the Mirage concert so many times over the next three years whenever MTV would broadcast it I would have it on!

It was I DONT WANT TO KNOW. I heard it on a FM station in Philly around the time they released Go Your Own Way in early '77. I knew of Fleetwood Mac but when I herad that song, the harmony, the guitars,I was hooked. I bought Rumours,Fleetwood Mac,Buckingham Nicks, Walter Egan stuff, all the older Mac albums and anything any of them were involved in. I have been hooked ever since. That's why I love Say You Will so much its the what caught my ear in the first place.

THE MAN himself...got me hooked!! I heard Holiday Road and DATUSA in the movie National Lampoons Vacation, I was watching the movie during a dark time in my life (needed to laugh) and BAM, I went "WHO IS THAT SINGING?!" The rest is history...I got OOTC and GI, then the 1988 GH CD, then, Tango and Mirage after that....the others. LOL

My life HAS NOT been the same since. :D

First Christine being on the radio constantly got me hooked (<i>Say You Love Me, You Make Lovin Fun, Don't Stop</i>).
Then it was Stevie (<i>Sara</i>, <i>Rhiannon</i>)
Then finally it was Lindsey (<i>Production of Sara</i>).

In fact, the thing that got me from beinga big fan to one who actually found the Ledge etc was going to an old Warner Bros. Fleetwood Mac site that advertised <i>The Dance</i> CD and had a repeating clip of the intro to <i>The Dance</i>'s Big Love. The Dance was then the second FM album I bought (after GH 88), and the first with my own money.

So like others here, Big Love did it for me too!

AMEN to that!

Your experience was pretty much the same for me when I went "whole hog" for FM in the late 1980s. What a man! The "Big Love" video (while quite cheesy by today's standards) just reeled me in. Too gorgeous!

I worked in a record store during the "Tango" period and I was teased mercilessly for liking FM (and especially Lindsey). I didn't care. In fact, I was so proud of my Lindsey obsession I would stratigically position the cover of the "Little Lies" 45 where I could see him while I checked out customers! (Hey, it worked -- made the day go faster!)

And you're speaking of "Holiday Road"....I remember when that movie came out (eek! 1983) I was 13 and we're sitting in the theatre and the projector broke. Since we had some "down time," I left the theatre, went to the nearby record store and bought the LP (yes, vinyl!!!) of the soundtrack because I had to have that cool song. So here I was -- getting my first taste of Lindsey Buckingham, but the lightbulb doesn't go on for another 5 years!

Then again, growing up...I was "aware" of who Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks were, and I knew songs like "Dreams" and "Gypsy," "Hold Me" and "Stand Back." But I guess I wasn't ready yet to catch Mac Fever!

I can't believe I'm gonna tell you guys this, but I used to carry around the White Album and Rumours 8 track tapes all over with me as a 6 year old. (Think surrogate teddy bear!) I was absolutely obsessed even then, LOL! Nobody in my family had any idea where this came from! I even had my own bright yellow "helmut" 8 track/radio player to play said tapes. (gosh, I'm really dating myself here, LOL!). Along with my tapes, was a dog-earred first edition novel of "Jaws" that was equally as loved.

I also tried to dress up as Stevie (again as a 6 year old!) and got into the packed-away winter stuff in the closet and tied every wooly scarf around me. My mother saw me and promptly took a picture, which I still have! I walked around like that all day, in the 80+degree heat in the summer, singing "Dreams" at the top of my lungs.

Things pretty much trailed off after that, But, when MTV first came on the scene, there was a lot of Mac stuff on there, and I became hooked all over again. As unreal as this seems, I didn't put 2-and-2 together that this was the same band I obsessed over as a young child. It was only when I was a "new" fan and mentioned something to one of my older sisters that she told me! And, then gave me the old 8 tracks I had so lovingly carried around as a kid! I actually still have these tapes!

I guess I was just destined to be a fan, right from the start!! I said back then to my 15 year old best friend at about 3AM, after watching the Tusk documentry for the millionith time, that I was gonna meet every single one of them before I turned 30! I did just that, except for the ever-elusive Lindsey! I do, however, still have my "Lindsey" charm bracelet that I got for my 14th birthday, LOL, so until I can get my hands on him, that will just have to do for now!!

Thanks for indulging my trip down memory lane!

Gosh, it's actually several stories. This Christine one is in the Christine songs thread. I got to talk to her while she was sitting in her limo (complete with my parents and dog). What a trip!

I was lucky enough to have band comp seats (side of the stage)and backstage passes for the Behind the Mask tour at the Meadowlands in NJ and the Spectrum in PHilly. That's where I got to schmooze with Mick, John, Billy & Rick. (The girls don't "go" backstage, which is basically a room with catered food). Great pictures from that night, though! The funniest one is with John. Someone said "don't fake it" referring to him smiling in the picture. He said, "What? Imagine me naked?" We both cracked up and the picture looks really strange!

I was in a right-time-right-place in August of 91 at the Taj in AC, NJ. That's where I met Stevie and the rest of the band that toured with her then. Les Dudek (guitar) was a trip. He played for the Allman Bros and lived with Cher. It was his birthday that night, and he had some really funny stories to tell! Most of which I can't repeat, since they are pretty raunchy! Stevie's brother was there, too. I acutally talked to her for over an hour. She grabbed a bar napkin and wrote me a really nice note on it. Then, proceeded to yell my name from across the bar for me to come get it! (Had to do SEVERAL am-I-dreaming reality checks that night). I just tried to play it cool (OMG) and not seem like I was a totally rabid fan on the verge of passing out from excitement. It was about 4AM when her security people were ushering her back upstairs. She stopped, the whole group followed her and she came over to me and hugged me goodbye and said she'd never forget me. I had held it together up until that point, when I started to bawl like a baby, LOL! That night truly was magic. ANd, for the record, all she had was a shot of sambuka (spelling?) that she sipped the whole time. I had, like, 20 million diet cokes. The bartender asked if I wanted something stronger, but I was pumped enough just being in the company of all these people! They were amazed that I actually knew all of them, even the makeup people, stagehands, etc. All that album cover studying paid off, LOL!

I almost met Lindsey when I was 19, with the same crew that had given me the comps for the Mask tour (family business friend that was the hookup). As fate would have it, he had "other plans" and decided not to meet the group for a drink. UGGGGGG!!!! So, I'll have to keep working on that one! (BIG sigh.)

Thanks for asking about my Mac history!

I've always been more an album person than a singles listener. In the early 70's when I was in Jr. high and high school, radio was kinda lame after the Beatles broke up. A lot of novelty songs and AM one hit wonders dominated the radio play in this town. One FM station played British blues style rock and early British hard rock, ala the early Mac, Moody Blues, Cream, Yardbirds turned Zepplin, Saabath, ect. and I really got into that kind of music. I liked Fleetwood Mac first with Peter Green and again when Christine was the main songwriter along with Bob Welch. When they relocated to the states I was like...hey, cool! I was in high school then and was a bit of a music snob because of my older brother. When the radio mentioned something about a re-formed (again) Fleetwood Mac and the new members Lindsey and Stevie...I was asking my brother, "who the hell is this dude Stevie and who's his chick Lindsey? Ever heard of them? Where's Bob?

I decided I didn't want anything to do with this newest Mac because the people influencing my taste at the time were denouncing them as a chick band doing pop, instead of the old Mac which was blues oriented. Not until Rhiannon was getting serious airplay a few months later, and the DJ mentioned Stevie's family lived here and that SHE (not he) was born here, did I take a second listen. Rhiannon was unlike any other pop/rock on the radio at that time. Soon after disco became the rage, FM's Rumours came out and was like the anti-disco to me, and being an album person, I thought Rumours was the best concept album since Sgt. Pepper! I was totally hooked for good when I saw that Stevie dude...oops, my bad...I mean Lindsey, on the Rumours back cover. Ttssssssst...hot...hot...hot! They've been my #1 band ever since until Mick and his greedy fan club **** got me riled up and remembering some of Mick's other schemes in the past...but that's another story. As for this one, different members from Peter Green and Mick, to Chris and Bob, then finally my homegirl, Stevie and her hot dude Lindsey hooked me in different ways at different times. Everyone except John who I overlooked for years until LB left and I realized John was the real glue that held it all together. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I was really into N'Sync and Brittney Spears until last year, when I thought they were getting too commercial with the Pepsi ads and all. I was searching for music that could inspire me the way theirs had, music with real teeth and grit. One night I was home watching American Idol when a contestant named Nikki sang this song called Edge of Seventeen. I didn't think the song was that good, but Nikki carried it well so I decided to check it out. That's how I first heard of Stevie, but when I found out she was a witch, I decided to buy only the Fleetwood Mac stuff. That's how I became a devoted fan.

Okay, NONE of the above is true.
I've NEVER owned the teeny-bopper music.
I remember seeing a picture of FM in the kids' magazine Dynamite. (Any other Gen-X-ers remember that?)
I didn't pay too much attention, as I assumed from the name that Fleetwood MAC was country, and country was not cool in the Philly suburb I lived in.
Forward to 1983, flipping through channels on the old cable box (the kind with the cord that reached across the room). I see this captivating blond in a black dress, and I stay on the channel to see the credit at the end of the video for Stand Back. Stevie Nicks? hmmm...
That happened a few times for the next year. I'd get lost in those brown eyes, and I'd never change the channel until the end of the video.
But I never went out and bought the album.
That same year in my Jr. High Art Appreciation class, a classmate designed a large mural of The Wild Heart cover. I paid little attention, not seeing the connection.
By the time of Rock a Little, I was very aware of Stevie's voice, and my best friend had told me she was in Fleetwood Mac, but I still thought of her more as a solo singer. The Philly stations did much to promote the album and always referred to her as "Lady Lace".
1987. Summer before college, I buy Tango. By the time I saw the Seven Wonders video, I was hooked on the band and especially the blond. My first college roommate bought me Rumours for the holidays; I bought him the first Very Special Christmas album, since I wanted to hear the Stevie song, but I'm Jewish, and didn't really want a whole Christmas album of my own.
By the end of that first year of college, we were driving each other crazy as only roommates can. He would listen to the same Springsteen song every night before going to bed, and I got in the habit of playing Gate and Garden because I knew he couldn't get the chorus out of his head during exams. Stevie as a weapon!1987 was definitely when I became known as an FM nut.

Two years later I was in a college in Wisconsin and got to see Stevie for TOSOTM, the following year for BTM.

To sum up, I guess it was MTV that got me hooked, back in the days when I still had cable and they still played videos.
I have to say that those first experiences of seeing Stevie on the small screen brought me into her TimeSpace every time. I lost all sense of time, problems, everything but those eyes and that voice (and that body was pretty good, as well).

There were many initial things. I would probably have to say that the main thing was when my older brother brought home the Rumors record when it came out in 1977ish and I saw how hot SN was compared to how "weird" the rest of the band looked to my 10 year old eyes at that time  I was trying to escape my parental and societal constraints as much as I could in Lafayette, Louisiana and not get killed by the "normal" people  Stevie and her hippy trippy music just took me there. She was so out there and yet so blatantly normal to me, even at ten years old. Then, there was that voice that sounded to me like ten voices all in harmony (actually it was usually two or three of her own in harmony and then LB and CM singing lead a la Dreams, but what the hell did I know then!!!! ).

Then, the beginning of the age of "video" really started for me; I have great memories of the live performances on the Midnight Special, Don Kirscher show, and, a little later, Solid Gold (for those that remember, YIPES for those Solid Gold Dancers!!!!) . Stevie always looked so good on those and mostly sang on key

Then, we got a VCR in like 1982 and I got a hold of the Tusk and Bella Donna things, which fueled the fire. She danced her a$$ off in the Bella Donna video (think Gold and Braid!!) and was just otherworldly in the Tusk one (if not a little stoned during the SOTM take - think the "would you be my - would you be my - would be my" off of the mic and to the crowd with the vacant stare afterward  ).

I finally saw Stevie live for the first time on the RAL tour in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was a little "thicker" in both waistline and voice on this tour and was really messed up in the concert I saw. She was nonetheless beautiful to me as I was in awe. In fact, she almost fell on top of me as everyone pushed forward and almost knocked me down when I was the first person she touched during the EO17 walk through with the audience. I was screaming at her and the security "I am going to fall, let go of me Stevie!" She did not - which I thought was very cool! Also and as an aside, her pearl and diamond ring was slipping off of her lace half fingered glove (hey - it was the 80's  ) but she closed her hand to prevent it from coming off. I later read with a smile that she had lost rings in concerts over the years, but they usually found their way back to her.

I saw FM for the first time on the TITN tour in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sadly, no LB, but RV and BB were great, as were the five or so additional members!!!! I saw LB for the first time live for The Dance tour. What a great performer on that/those guitars!!!!!!! I can say that there was a definite, different, and better if not tenser (sp?) feeling when LB and SN were on stage as opposed to the other subsequent players.

It has been a great almost 30 years!!!!!!!!

Same answer to both questions!

Saw Fleetwood Mac in 1979 (?) at the Spectrum in Philly. I think Kenny Loggins opened for them. Saw Stevie twirl and I was hooked. Never saw anybody dance like her.

Neglected my music for awhile: kids, two jobs...etc.

Saw The Dance on PBS and I was back...."to the velvet...ooohh"

It started for me with FM when I was in high school with the White Album. We couldn't wait until the next album, little did we know back then that the next album would be so great. The day it came out me and my neighbor went to the five and dime and got the album. Both of us wore the albums out from playing them so much, we had to get 2nd copies. I started to wear that out so I got a 8 track which I still have. Got Tusk and Mirage the day they were released. Was more of a LB fan and didn't really appreciate the genius of Stevie's solo work until I heard Timespace. Now I never miss her solo concerts. I have been a fan for over 25 years.

I actually saw Nikki after the Stormy Weather benefit last year in LA at the Wiltern Theatre. I saw her after the show. She and her (?) Mother were going back down stairs to join the party. She was sooooo pale in person, kind of drab looking (no offense). Maybe she was just tired though. Funny thing was I was wearing a necklace Stevie once owned and she looked at it.

I remember Rhiannon being my favorite song- I loved the ending (of course, I didn't even know about the "exercism" version ;) ) Me and my mom watched the Dance video ALL THE TIME- and we still do :) . After getting the Dance CD, I think I got Stevie's Timespace and GH '88. It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I started buying the other FM albums and I got Enchanted for Christmas '01. My first experience with the MAC was in 1982, when I bought Gypsy and Hold Me as 45's. I remember twirling to Gypsy and flipping Hold Me over to listen to Eyes of the World. I played this song so many times esp in front of the mirror where I used to role play to it, strumming my guitar and singing background...lol...hey give me a break..I WAS 11. :)
But ever since then I listened and loved the MAC, but a turning point for me was in 1997, where the obsession hit full frontal!!

Tango In The Night came out my freshman year at Penn State. Sure, I'd heard the earlier albums, and we had quite a few 45s from them - my older brother deejayed for a while when he was in high school - but Tango was the first album I bought.

(Cassette, actually. It lasted about six weeks and a few hundred playings in the Walkman....)

Funny thing is, Christine's songs/videos from that album were the ones that first interested me, but as I listened to more of their music, Lindsey's tunes were the ones that really grabbed my attention. That's still true today.

BTW, nice place you've got here. (This is my first post, but I've been lurking since shortly after the Buffalo concert, learning all kinds of interesting and useful things.... like NOT joining the fan club.....)

Then I went back and bought the FM catalogue and spent a weekend goinbg through deja vu as I had flashbacks to childhood while listening to the eponymous lp and Rumours.

I wonder if Lindsey realizes how many sceond generation fans he brought into the fold with that then-very-up-to-date sounding single, Big Love?

Yes you're right, I am surprised too how many people here also mention Big love. I still think it is a very cool song!

Anyone thinks there is one of those generation grabbers on SYW also?

It was Little Lies that got to me first. I heard the single and saw the video and just loved it (especially the keyboard sounds). My sister was given a casette of TITN for her birthday but it was me that played it over and over again...I loved all of them equally at that point. I was 15.
I then tuned out of Mac for a couple of years. I started dating someone who had the green cover best of Mac album which he used to keep in his car....that was it I was hooked! Stevie really started to stand out for me at this point, especially on Rhiannon and Sara.
As a surprise gift my boyfriend brought me a copy of OSOTM and that was when Stevie totally pulled me in, hook, line and sinker! :D My obsession grew and grew. I had a sister-in-law who was a big Stevie fan too and she got me tickets to see her on the OSOTM tour in the UK. I went to see Mac in Manchester, UK too the next year.

It wasn't until I really got into Stevie that I realised I used to dance round my bedroom with my sister to I can't wait back in 1985 when I was 14 too...I never knew who it was at the time...but it was Stevie I came back too in the end. She must have buried into my subconscious! :)

For me it was hearing Silver Springs live on the Dance Concert. I saw the video for Silver Springs and have since been crazily buying everything that is Fleetwood Mac. I am looking for the 1980 Live album on CD.

For me it was Stevie. In 1989(when i was 4) I saw on VH1, two videos of a beautiful woman who did all of these twirls:D but had a great voice as well. All i remembered from those videos was: in the first one she had on a red dress, and the second one she was singing and walked toward a huge window.

Well my dad is huge music fan and had Rumours playing a lot:nod:, so i knew most of the songs from an early age, but didn't know who it was. Then in 1997, I loved Silver Springs. My family was going on a trip and it was a 4 hour drive to get there and I wanted to take some cd's of my dad's. Well I picked The Dance, Rumours and Fleetwood Mac, and figured I'd give them a listen. The whole way there, I listened to them and i've been hooked ever since. It wasn't until later that I found out those two videos were Stevie's Rooms On Fire and If Anyone Falls.......this must have been destiny or something...

For me it was Stevie in 1989. I was 13 years old at the time & Rooms on Fire came on the radio. I was so completely bowled over by the song that I stopped what I was doing to listen to the rest of the it. Amazingly, I can still remember where I was & what I was doing the first time I heard that song. No other artist has ever had that effect on me. There are many other bands/artists that I am a fan of but I can't remember where I was the first time I heard their music! Anyway needless to say I bought that song & then started to stock up on Stevie's back catalogue. It was then that I realised she had been in Fleetwood Mac. My parents used to play a lot of FM when I was young so I think that subconsciously I had taken it in!

Unfortunately I still haven't had the chance to see Stevie/FM live as sadly for me I live in the UK!

It was "Dreams". Hearing it constantly on the radio made me fall in love with that dreamy voice. Later on I discovered that some other songs that I loved ("Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun", "Everywhere") were from the same band. So I just bought the Greatest Hits CD. And the rest is history.

 Lindsey won over our hearts with his charm and his very
clever videos...Slow Dancing...Go Insane...Countdown!!!

His tunes...Iam so Afraid & Big Love are Guitar Masterpieces!!!

Christine's new twist on... Say You Love Me... bringing her John
front and center during The Dance Concerts...was just Brilliant!:)

Stevie's video for Gypsy was a wonderful bandmate show-case!

Our first F Mac "wake-up call" was the HBO:eek: Mirage Video!!!:blob1:

It was January of 1999....moving into college and my roomate was an FM addict. So I was hooked to FM first.....then became partial to Stevie and saw her for the first time in September of '99 at the Sheryl Crow and Friends Concert in Central Park. My first real Stevie concert was December of '99 at the Millenium NYE Show in Las Vegas (yes, that is correct, I was not yet 21....hehehe....beat the system).

Oh and it jsut so happens that I LOVED Little Lies when I was about 7 and it played on the radio all the time...but I had no idea who it was!

Well i'm not gonna lie, it was Lindsey for me. I heard GYOW on the radio when i was about 4. My mom realized how much i loved this band, got the Greatest Hits Cassette and it turned into our car jam. I distinctly remember listening to YMLF on repeat FOREVER. But solo, i prefer Stevie. The vocals, mystique, persona, and personality.

Fleetwood Mac. Ah, that fateful day I swapped in my duplicate copy at JB Hi-Fi for TVBOFM. I heard "Seven Wonders" and some other song of theirs on the radio, and asked mum and David if they'd be worth getting. Then I listened to them during the long drive to Halls Gap for our holiday. After the initial shock and dislike of "Monday Morning", I thoroughly everything else on the two CDs... the rest, as is often said, is history... that was just after Christmas 2007.
I bought Stevie's Timespace (which I still don't like much - very poorly compiled imo) sometime in 2008. At the time I didn't even realise she was a singer for FM, and it was still many weeks later before I realised! (Btw I now have The Wild Heart, which I adore! No other studio albums of hers have been stocked yet though... :()
I was inspired to buy Lindsey's Law & Order after hearing "Trouble" on the radio (I couldn't find any compilations). I was very surprised to learn he created solo material, as that's the only song of his I'd ever heard on the radio (it's still the only single of his I've heard on the radio... :().
And I bought Christine's 1984 album sometime last year. :)
Doesn't everyone love my insightful tangents?

Not only was this man INSANELY attractive...he was playing guitar like I had never seen at that point in my young life. That was it for me. Stevie who....lol..Just kidding.

I'm happy to say that Fleetwood Mac hooked me first. As a little kid, I just loved the harmonies of the three voices. It was so unique, unlike anything I had ever heard before. I took the entire group into account more than the individual band members, at first at least.

Completely Lindsey!! It was 1984. I was 9 and a half and in South Carolina. My parents wanted to move either there or Florida, Florida didn't work out, so we were staying with my uncle in Myrtle Beach, SC. My mom found a job, but my dad didn't, so he spent the summer helping my uncle paint his house. During the day, my siblings and I were stuck inside, thankfully, my uncle had MTV (which we didn't have at home). I liked a lot of other music (Prince, Madonna) and found some more to like that summer (The Cars, Bananarama) but one day I saw the best video I had ever seen, Lindsey Buckingham: Go Insane. I just knew, even from the first time seeing it, that this would be whose music I liked for the rest of my life.

Christine :D My first favourite FM song was Say You Love Me and that was followed by even more FM fandom and then Christine's then Stevie's solo stuff. I'm not a big fan of Liddy's solo stuff.

P.S. Why wasn't Chris an option in the first post? She's got solo albums too y'know... People seem to forget, I think

I remember hearing Christine's songs from TITN on the radio when I was little, so those were the first that I heard :D With regards to conscious fandom though, it was Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman that got me hooked.
However, my mum did tell me the other day when we were listening to Rumours that she used to play that and Buckingham Nicks all the time when she was pregnant with me.. Maybe that's why I love them so much

For me it was Fleetwood Mac. I spent some weeks just listening to Rumours before I started to search for any information about this band. My older cousin moved in with us, when she was in high school(she constantly fought with her stepdad, so they had to separate). Anyway, here came her collection of awesome 70s music. I was in 8th grade, I think, and FELL IN LOVE with Rumours. I'd taken two guitar lessons in 5th grade, and didn't understand a word they'd said to me, and put my guitar away. Well, I did remember how to tune it, when my Rumours love started. I learned how to play the solo on IDWTK, note for note, JEFF HEALEY style(on my lap, with guitar facing up!). I went out and bought a Rumours chord book, and quickly realized that the Jeff Healey style had to go! I learned guitar, and soon keyboards, FROM Rumours. I've played guitar and keyboards in a band, my entire adult life, and I make all of my income, either playing in my band, or doing sound for bands, and have since graduating college.

You know, I OFTEN ponder - what would my life be like, had my cousin not moved in, with her copy of Rumours? Seriously, think about it(before you go!). Music is my entire life, and livelihood, and I OWE IT ALL, to my love affair with Rumours! It truly boggles my mind to wonder where I might be, had I not discovered it!

I was only 14 when the Mac came out with hits. I LOVED their music but to answer this question ,,,,,,it was Stevie that first got me "hooked". I couldn't believe such a strong powerful voice could come out of a little , beautiful woman! Each member of the Mac has me appreciate the entire band for whom they are, but lill Stevie had me in awe ala television..............Maybe if Christine was the one out in front I'd feel that way about her...........

Peacekeeper was the first Mac song I heard and drew me into SYW ... but Running Through The Garden really made me sit up and take notice of this amazing, unique voice. And my life hasn't been the same since either :o
For a long time I was all about Stevie but Lindsey definitely grew on me and currently I'm listening to him more than anyone. It reinforces my faith in cycles, etc etc. :p

As for part two of the question: I became a fan in April 2004 and saw FM for the first time Unleashed in Dublin, October 2009.

I was 6 when Rumours was released. My sister bought it and that album was on constant play for the next two years. I remember liking every song on it but I was young and also liked Andy Gibb, Wings, and Boston--other albums in the house. So I'm not sure I could say this was the start of my initial fandom.

Tusk came and went. I watched the video for the title track premier on Solid Gold and was floored by how different it sounded from anything on Rumours.

I suppose I properly became a fan when I was 11. Mirage was released and I was a huge fan of Gypsy--the song and the video. I also loved Hold Me and Love in Store. But, yeah, Gypsy got me hooked. I bought Mirage, then returned to the old Rumours album still in the house. Soon, I bought Tusk, Fleetwood Mac...By 1984 I had all the pre-BN albums, except the first two on Blue Horizon. I bought a compilation ("Vintage Years") to cover those.

When I was little, I had seen my dad's CD of Tango in the Night in our CD cabinet, but had no clue as to who the Mac was or what that album was, but I kept on wondering who was the tall guy that looked like Hagrid from Harry Potter (yeah, I'm talking about Mick, and I still do think he does bear a resemblance to him lol), but these days, I enjoy it. What also didn't help that The Dance went down when I was about 7, and then, I was too concerned with more "important" things such as watching Nick.

Years later, when I was 17 and close to graduating high school (I graduated in '08), I started to drift away from my tastes of top 40 pop and rap and towards rock and metal, and with that, my dad told me to check out Go Your Own Way and I loved it (it's now my favorite FM song). I began to check out more of their stuff and I liked it, but what really set me off was when my parents bought a record player and decided to make the first album to be played on there to be my dad's vinyl copy of Rumours. Maybe it was the vinyl vintage factor, but I came to love that album and with it, the band.

Oh yeah, and that vinyl copy of Rumours? After making a CD of the album with a couple of songs thrown on at the end (Take It Easy and Hotel Cali by the Eagles, Dreams by Van Halen, and Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who) for my dad, I got got technical ownership of that album.

I'd heard "Dreams" a few times growing up and always loved that song, but it was "Little Lies" and then the truly stellar "Everywhere" that hooked me to the band. Then I discovered Stevie Nicks' impassioned performance of Rhiannon (from the Midnight Show) on YouTube and my obsession with the intoxicatingly captivating singer and her phenomenal band was born.

I was an ardent Mac fan for two years before I attended my first concert last year (June 8, Milwaukee). It remains my most cherished memory.

For me, it was seeing Stevie perform 'Rhiannon' on 'The Midnight Special', I think it was 1976. For some reason, the 'under-my-thumb' parents were either out late, or asleep, and I saw that performance and was just blown away, to say the least. My pre-teen self was sure I was seeing into the future. It was my first real glimpse, in performance, at a woman I was certain was going to be a huge, huge star. I just knew at that young age that her music would always matter to me.
I lived for the live 'Rhiannons' that would play on FM radio in the 70s afterwards, and I must not have been the only one, 'cause by '78 (after 'Rumours') it was more common to hear a live 'Rhiannon' on WPLR or WCCC in CT than it was to hear the studio version. This was years before the official Fleetwood Mac Live lp was released with a good, but nowhere as near magical live, later 'Rhiannon'.
There was the simple moon/tree backdrop televised; Stevie's vocals so raw and wild, and her visual impact- I was hooked immediately. Mostly, it was the intensity of her performance and the voice. I thought Lindsey was fantastic on guitar and vocals, too.
I like Stevie's current voice fine, but I surely do miss the intensity that Stevie had on stage from the '70s til... oh, about 1986...right after Betty Ford, it left her. She still sings well, but her performances just have never been the same. She seemed so 'into' her time on stage for that decade, like she was in her own world and loving it and living for it as much as we did.
It may not even have to do with any drugs during that time period. Maybe it was inevitable for it to become less of a thrill to perform, and more of a job.
I think the early years when she knows that she is becoming a big deal, and she was hungry for it, with her singing so wild and fearless are just beautiful moments to revisit.
Time doesn't stand still, and I still like her onstage. But back then, oh my!
I wonder if it's possible if she may become 'hungry for it' again--I hope so!

Agreed, excellent post. It pretty much describes what Stevie Nicks is to me, and always will be, even if music may have become a job for her...though I don't believe it.

Stevie Nicks first got me hooked. It was, now, almost 2 years ago, and I was watching School of Rock with my cousin. One more pseudo-rock-kid-movie, I thought back then, until that moment in the bar, where Edge of Seventeen's playing. Immediatly, I noticed the catchy guitar riff, and the "ooh-ooh-oohs". I was in Serbia, at that time of the year, and went back home only 2 months later, but I hadn't forget the song. So, I searched it, found it, and it was still cool. But what really hooked me was the live performance I saw on youtube, later. It was from the HBO live concert, and that's where I recognize what Nikolaj described. It was huge. The fact that she cried, at the end of the song, really bumped me : it was heartfelt and powerful, and probably one of the best performances I have seen. Then, Rhiannon came, and i'll always remember those two songs as the beginning of my "fandom" =)
And, ironically, now, School of Rock is one of my favorite movies. (not very objective !)

This is perfect. She brought back some of that spark on the Enchanted tour, and even switched up ye olde setlist. That was exciting, but didn't last. Their complete lack of spontaneity (not to mention missing a very! important member) is what disappoints me the most about the Mac today.

Stevie, too. I think the self-indulgent lifestyle is what fueled those performances, much as the thrill of being onstage played a part. Being so into every performance meant she could be so into herself. She could do a line, come out onstage, live out her art for as long as she wanted, and who would stop her? Her time at Betty Ford showed her exactly what that lifestyle did to her and FOR her, which, money and fame aside, wasn't much. Living a self-centered life is no way to live, and that's why it feels like everything she does onstage now is for the benefit of the show, not for herself.

Why did I even write so much. You're convinced.

Me too, Lisa. These days, I prefer to remember them in their heyday. If Chris were still in it, of course I'd still be interested, but without her(the only one who has any singing range left), they are lame. I appreciate Lindsey's energy, but that's not enough to sustain it for me.

Me too, Lisa. These days, I prefer to remember them in their heyday. If Chris were still in it, of course I'd still be interested, but without her(the only one who has any singing range left), they are lame. I appreciate Lindsey's energy, but that's not enough to sustain it for me.

Long live Fleetwood Mac, from 1967-1997!

Trying to imagine how different FM's shows would be if Chris was still with them. Probably much like the Dance, only she would look more bored. Right now, I'd only go to see them if the tickets were good and cheap, just to say I saw Stevie (and John!) in person.

Just my luck they'd break out the cardboard John for that one night.

People don't get why I don't like SYW even when I explain the lack of Christine. Without her it's just never going to be the same. I was going to go to Unleashed but couldn't. Having seen the videos, I'm glad. As much as I love her, seeing Stevie sing Chris' songs would have broken my heart :distress:

I propose a cardboard Christine!!

Really? You'd never told us that before.

 You must have had my posts on "ignore" or something because I throw that out ever chance I've had...and more.

Ok, one more time for posterity...

I became smitten with Eric Clapton's guitar playing on John Mayall's "Beano" album (I was 10 yrs old)...a few months later when I read that Clapton had left to form some band called CREAM, I wondered who could take his place in Mayall's band...that's when I discovered Peter Green on Mayall's Hard Road album (@ age 11). He sounded so good, but so different, from Eric that I was quite taken by his playing, too. Wasn't long until I'd heard that Peter Green had formed some band called Fleetwood Mac (rock news wasn't as easy to come by out here in California...news didn't quite travel so fast in the late '60s). On a late night show on an "underground" FM station, they played "Black Magic Woman" and a couple of other Fleetwood Mac songs...I wasn't quite "hooked", but my interest was "piqued". Wasn't long before I kept hearing "Black Magic Woman" on the radio...a slightly different version, but I never could catch who it was by, I just thought Fleetwood Mac had recorded another version...but, no, that was Santana. Didn't hear much from Fleetwood Mac again until the same FM station played "Oh Well"...OMFG!! When the song was over and the DJ said "Fleetwood Mac", I WAS hooked....line, sinker, the whole damned trauler!! (of course, it wasn't long until Clapton released the Layla album and sucked me back in, so I had this "trio of guitar Gods" reality happening, since I'd also just been turned on to this band from Georgia called "The Allman Brothers Band", as well..and Duane Allman was the third part of the Guitar God Trinity.)

So, despite what you might assume by reading the above, I AM more of a "band" person...a fan of "the band" more than any one individual IN the band...when I'd read that Peter had left, but the band was going to carry on, I couldn't wait to hear how they'd sound without him...then came Kiln House...yep, there's "life after Green" after all. Just cemented my "Fleetwood Mac" fandom over being just a "Peter Green" fan...which I still am to this day, as well. And, as the personnel changes in FMac kept happening, it was just another day in Fleetwood Mac-ville for me...ok, let's hear how they sound with the new person. The "fame & fortune" of the Rumours era really put a damper on things...yay, they're finally famous, but as time went on, they just seemed to stagnate. Then the longer breaks between albums & tours in the '80s just infuriated me...S&L got the blame since they appeared to be the cause...when Lindsey left, I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that Fleetwood Mac would once again become a full-time band...but, no, they had to "wait for Stevie's solo career"...just pissed me off, so when Stevie finally left (and unfortunately took Christine with her, in my eyes), again, I was looking forward to Fleetwood Mac becoming a full-time band once again. But, no. The Dance reunion was nice to see, but I thought it basically signalled the end...and for all intents, itwas. One good 2nd Buckingham Nicks album in 2003, but that just was it for me...out of which my new motto (paraphrasing some old Medieval Englishman)...

"Fleetwood Mac is dead; long live Fleetwood Mac"

"Fleetwood Mac is dead; long live Fleetwood Mac"Yep Steve, that's how I feel. It's 1980, in my FM book. Unless Chris came back, I couldn't care less WHAT they do now. I mainly stay here, for the Ledge/FM family that I found some 14 years ago(I'm trying to remember when I got my first computer, and found alt.music.fleetwoodmac. Sometime around 1995/96). I'll just revel in my memories of them....

I just keep hoping (wishing & praying) that if/when they release this supposedly new album, it's going to knock my socks off (which would be tough since I don't WEAR socks, in the first place)....but, at the same time, that's fruitless because my expectation level, by the friggin' time they ever DO record & release the album, will be unreachably high. Which is what happened with Say You Will...nothing they could've done would've pleased me by the time it came out (especially since 90% of Lindsey's material I'd already been listening to for 5 years due to the GOS leak)...it's just a wonder that as much of it actually DID appease me.:shrug: So, maybe it is time to pack it in...the bar for my tolerance & expectation levels of their solo albums is so much lower than for a band album that that's the road they should probably take.

It was Stevie's singing on the Mirage video. Her singing on The Chain is chilling. I think there is also a counter line on Go Your Own Way where she sings alone (on the album it is a group vocal). Again, chilling.

That was around 1998. It would be seven more years before I would see her live, then again with Tom Petty in 2006, then Lindsey in 2006 and 2007, then Fleetwood Mac in 2009. Now I have a hearing condition called hyperacusis and can never go to a concert again.

Lindsey is a master producer. Say You Will would be a piece of a junk without his production.

Stevie is the best writer and singer in the group.

Mick and John are as good a rhythm section as ever there was and ever there will be.

But who hooked me first? Stevie -- on the Mirage video. Right from that magic moment when she comes in on the Chain.

Who hooked you first?

Billy Burnette's songwriting.

One of my first CDs was "Mystery Girl" by Roy Orbison. "All I Can Do Is Dream You" from that album is co-written by Billy Burnette and Rick Vito appears as a guest guitarist.
It's a great song so I got curious as to who this Burnette guy is. When I saw Billy's solo album "Coming Home" in a catalogue when it came out in 93, I got it by mailorder without knowing what exactly I would get. What a great album that is!
I had gotten to know before that he played in Fleetwood Mac, but for some strange reason, whenever I looked into a booklet from one of the CDs of Fleetwood Mac's huge catalogue, I did not find his name. At one point, I even came across a new solo album by another Fleetwood Mac member whose name I had never come across before, but which I liked upon having listened to it in a store. That album was "Out Of the Cradle".

Only in about mid-94 did I find a CD of "Behind the Mask" in a cutout bin somewhere. A precious find.

Well, I feel where you're coming from. I get tired of the 'breaks' and the waiting. As well as the drama and in-fighting. I guess I'm not yet at the point where I could 'care less' what they do. I do care, but I wish they'd decide what they're going to work on and stick with it, whether it's solo work or a group effort.

First it was Stevie, and then I found out about everyone else, and then I was sucked into the World Of Macdom
