VINTAGE FREE SOUTH AFRICA POSTER BY MARK VALLEN 1985:
1980s: The poster that helped defeat apartheid in South AfricaI created this silkscreen poster titled "Free South Africa" in 1985 to support the freedom struggle of the South African people, then living under a brutally racist white minority regime. Used at anti-apartheid rallies, student occupations of universities, and protests in front of South African embassies all across the United States, thousands of my posters were given away, sold, and wheat-pasted on city streets.
"Free South Africa" played a historic role in the movement to liberate South Africa from apartheid. The print was eventually included in "The Path of Resistance," an exhibition of contemporary protest art held at New York City's Museum of Modern Art in 2000. The exhibit traced 40 years of socially critical and politically charged art.
I took the above photograph at the May 17, 1985 student anti-apartheid rally in Berkeley, California, where students were demanding that the University of California system divest its $1.7 billion in holdings in firms that did business in apartheid South Africa.
I COPIED THE FOLLOWING FROM A GOOGLE SEARCH PUTTING ARTIST'S NAME MARK VALLEN FREE SOUTH.I PURCHASED THIS WHEN I WAS LIVING IN BERKELEY IN 1985 FROM A PLACE CALLED, LA PENA.
I HAVE PRESERVED IT IN SHRINK WRAP AND IT IS IN MINT CONDITION. I AM HAVING TO MOVE INTO A MUCH SMALLER HOME AND GOING THROUGH STUFF I NO LONGER STORE. IT'S TIME TO GO TO SOMEONE ELSE TO ENJOY.
