Default Mystery to Me

Ok. I've almost completed my goal. The only pre-Mac studio rekkits I don't have are Kiln House and Penguin. (On the list, going to get them, promise, I swear it.)

But, lemme say. Mystery to Me has gotta be my favorite. The songs just seem to have like, the perfect feel... they flow so well together, and I just think this album is beautiful.

The earlier records are kinda iffy, I think. Oh yes, definitely -- they're good. Really good. (Good enough for me to keep getting collections like, BBC, "early years" [or whatever its called] boxed set.. the yellow one, you know... yadda yadda)

Maybe it's my Rumours-Era favoritism coming out? What do you think? Does this rekkit just sound so good to me because I like that type of California feel.. or is it truly just a phenomenal record that didn't take off? ..b/c of Welch's departure, I guess.

I'd hate to think I don't like the record on its own merits, in sort of a "if I can't have SN/LB.. then I'll take this.." type situation.

Thoughts on the album? Striking or just so-so? Not so hot? Whut.

Sarah

I think Future Games has become my favorite album of that inbetween changing line-ups and identity period, followed by Bare Trees. Mystery To Me is the one pre Buckingham-Nicks album I was used to seeing in shops, I sort of took it that for whatever reason it was the most popular one of them. Penguin and Heroes Are Hard To Find were the hardest to get on CD, Mystery and Bare Trees the easiest.

I will go to my grave believing that if Bob Weston & Jenny Fleetwood didn't have their affair, "Mystery To Me" would've gone on to do what the "white album" did and whatever the follow-up would've been at that point would've been their "Rumours"...Welch & Weston never would've left the band, Lindsey & Stevie'd still be looking for a record label (unfortunately); but probably would've made some sort of splash in the biz at a later point...maybe in the '80's...joining Fleetwood Mac just accelerated their rise to fame.

I love Mystery To Me. For me, it's right up there, close to The White Fleetwood Mac album, Rumours & Tusk. I never bought it until years after it first came out and I'm so glad that I discovered the Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac. I seem to love it more with each time that I play it. I actually like all 5 Welch era Mac albums, except for those 2 Dave Walker Penguin songs. But, Mystery To Me is definitely my favorite of the five, with Bare Trees and Heroes Are Hard To Find next.

I'm forever in love with this CD. I knew from the moment I put it in that I was going to view it was one of FM's very best, despite the fact that I hadn't (and still haven't) heard all of their music. But it's just that good. I'll take Bob and Christine as the sole songwriters any day, even though I adore Stevie and Lindsey and I'm a huge fan of the Rumours era. This album has something different to offer, and I love it. You can't compare "Hypnotized" or "Why" to anything else, really. And I feel like a loner in this, but feel...I don't know...satisfied when I listen to "Forever," and it is a feeling that is incomparable to my feelings for all other Mac songs. And some will say I'm crazy, but I honestly like this one more than all of the Rumours era albums, except for Tusk, perhaps.

Mystery To Me is a great album; I call it my "summer album" because of the California-pop mood it invokes. Bob and Christine had some heavenly tunes here. It's probably my second favorite post-Peter/pre-BN album behind Bare Trees.

I agree with chiliD that this would have been the Mac's breakout album a la the White Album were it not for the affair between Bob Weston and Jenny Fleetwood. One of my favorites, "The Way I Feel," never seems to get any love...

Anyway, Mystery To Me is striking and funky and jazzy and still a phenomonal listen 31 years later.

I don't believe you crazy one bit. As much as I love the Rumours line up, my favorite era is the Bob Welch era. MTM is one of my desert island discs.

This being in the pre Rumours section...I think we all agree that this band, never missed. Yes we are that old, we own these lp's and know what we're
talking about. I for one love this premise. However, when the white album came out I cried again because it was perfect again....then we got Rumours!
More attention should be payed to the perfect rhythm section! The only constant....think about it.

Let's make it a threesome! I listen to it at the pool probably 4-5 afternoons a week in the summer. It's simply perfect. I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna get up the nerve to try to get Bob to sign mine.
Don't jump my ass......THIS was the ultimate FM!
I'm currently in love with Future Games......

As I've said many times, Mystery To Me is my favorite Fleetwood Mac album. I just can't hit play and not listen to the whole thing from Emerald Eyes to Why. In my opinion, it was Christine at her best with Bob Welch, and there's such a mix of different styles and genres between successive songs.

And does Christine not look absolutely gorgeous on the inside cover picture? (Homer's avatar) I never thought I'd stray from BN Fleetwood Mac, but Mystery To Me is the paramount album in my opinion.

Shamus

(It's snowing now though...It's time for Future Games and a cup of hot chocolate.)

Where does one find him? Has anyone here ever met him? (And we are talking about Bob Welch, right? I just have to make sure).

She is so gorgeous in that pic! I was surprised when I first saw it, because it doesn't really look like her to me. I can certainly tell it's her when I look more closely, but it seems like a more glamorous look than she normally has. (I'm tired this morning and that must contribute to my cheesiness). And I also didn't think I was going to get into pre-BN Fleetwood Mac, mostly because I was such a Stevie fanatic (still am) and couldn't imagine an album without her. Now I realize I was crazy for thinking that way!

Chris does look gorgeous in that picture, the hair, the eyes.....beautiful. Actually all of them look great, maybe it was airbrushed a little but to me thier faces are perfection. As a teen I remember sketching that picture, it turned out pretty good as i recall. I was OK in the artistic department. I should dig it up and scan it for a laugh, I wonder if I could find it. I used to draw FM people all the time.....when I should have been studying....

I also recall really liking the ring Chris is wearing. My engagement ring ended up looking identical to it; that was no accident LOL.

This MTM thread was started 2 years ago & it's still going. I've never thought of Mystery To Me as just a summer album. I LOVE it any season of the year. I agree with everyone about the inside cover picture. That is probably my favorite Fleetwood Mac band picture from any era. Although I've seen countless beautiful pictures of Christine, that is one of my favorites.
