"I'd Rather Go Blind" needs to advance in this contest, since it was an actual hit.
I voted for two other songs from this side of the record. I love "Crazy 'Bout You Baby" with its fabulous keyboards so that was easy, plus it's just a really good song. I also love "Wait and See," an early composition by Chris herself. It has lovely keyboards and a lovely vocal and is a very simple song. Simple, sometimes, is good, and I find this one heartfelt and beautiful. It also points out something about this album in general: the lack of backing vocals. A few years down the line, Christine's songs were always layered with backing vocals - often her own, often her bandmates'. I like how pristine her voice sounds on this track, with just one simple vocal line. It also makes me invent my own harmony vocals while I'm listening! Even if I'm the only person who votes for it, I just love this track.

I'm on My Way.
I'd Rather Go Blind is an obvious hit, but she recorded it with Chicken Shack. And as good as it is, it isn't a patch on No Road is the Right Road, which is self-penned and evidence that Christine was already an effective songwriter before she joined Mac. It has this great, mod-cool vibe, groovy but understated. |
