Default Say the Meantime

People may have already tried this before, but I was wondering if any fans of the Rumors line-up out there had compiled a what-if Mac record, where six of Christine's ITM songs replaced six songs on Say You Will and, oila, a classic would be born...

As much as I like SYW the way it is, and as much as I'm a HUGE ITM fan, it might be a fun game to play. The idea came to me from watching a recent exchange on a link in the Christine Forum...

Here's a shot:

Illume
Peacemaker
You Are
Red Rover
Bad Journey
Throw Down
Anything is Possible
Murrow Turning Over in His Grave
Steal Your Heart Away
Say You Will
Silver Girl
Forgiveness

Bleed to Love Her
Everybody Finds Out
Givin' it Back

This must be what deja vu feels like!

you know oddly enough.. syw seems so scattered to me... but adding christine's songs here give it more of a concept and cohesivness.... "isn't that weird?"..

seriously i love the running order but i can't stand the song "say you will" or "silver girl" so take those out add so sincere and calumy and you have a deal... We'll call the album "Deja Vu"

i think with all three harmonies these songs would do much better as well... then add a better production than Dan Perfect and Christine... no offense but at times... i can tell this is pro tools in the barn... but her songwriting is still the best... it's the arranging that needs help

How about Patrick Leonard, the guy who produced "Love Shines" & "Heart Of Stone" on the Chain box set? He knew exactly what to do with both of those songs, in my opinion.

You've got to somehow find a place for "Calumny" (my favorite ITM song).

Loves Shines is FANTASTIC! One of my top ten favorite songs.

Unfocused, loose arrangements were also the problem of the 1984 solo album. A pop-song track as simple & straightforward as a typical Christine McVie song should adhere to the linear progression of a story: rising action, climax, denoument. Or the traditional progression of musical form: exposition, development, recapitulation. Or something along those lines. The tracks on Rumours have this. They need this. A Christine McVie song always benefits from such formulation. You can play me any ten-second snippet from "You Make Loving Fun" or "Don't Stop" or "Say You Love Me" & I can tell you where it goes in the track. But try that with "I'm the One" or "Love Will Show Us How." The lump of clay must be molded & remolded & then looked at in a particular light & then molded again! If you're going to just jam freely on a pop album, you'd better express some highly interesting & unusual textures & approaches, otherwise you risk reminding the listener of the band he heard at the bar last week.

For all the empty dismissing of Buckingham among the fashionably iconoclastic, he had the ability to sit down & arrange a track so that it had progression & movement. The good of such formulation is that the human ear, by all evidence, seems to find joy in this.

david, you write about music the way matt ridley writes about biology - with eloquence and fervor.

I agree with you. It might be her best vocal ever. However, if she worked with FM it woouldn't have surfac ed at all. Truth be told, I'd take 8-10 tracks from ITM and eliminate more from SYW to make the accomodation.

I was just trying to be "fair..." But who has to be fair in a fantasy, right?

Where the hell was I for that first, great thread? Lot of interesting conversation there. It's typical of me to be four months behind.

BTW: GET In the Meantime! It's worth it.

I've done my own album In the Meantime Say you Will (original yes) and I was able to be more flexible with Chris's songs because I like more of them than the songs from SYW.

Some songs sound great together - Peacekeeper followed by Calumny, Friend followed by Thrown Down.

I ended up with 14 songs (5 Lindsey, 5 Chris and 4 Stevie) 56 minutes. Suits me.

Gail

I think "Calumny" IS her best vocal ever. It gives me chills whenever I listen to it, even now...2 years after I first heard it. And, I'm sure "Northern Star" wouldn't have seen the light of day either had she recorded with Fleetwood Mac.

I don't want to be fair. After all, Chris had the most songs on the White Fleetwood Mac album & Rumours & they were pretty decent records.
