Hey everyone...
There is a German singer/songwriter who I'm very fond of: Juliane Werding... and I think actually she might appeal to some fans of Stevie, Christine & Fleetwood Mac. That is, of course, if you don't mind listening to lyrics in a foreign language. I had a bunch of tracks of hers uploaded for another friend of mine, so I decided to pick 25 of my favorites, focusing on songs that have a somewhat "haunting" quality to me, and I uploaded them to a page to share with all of you! I also posted lyric translations for those wondering what her songs are about... she tends to be a poetic lyricist, not too terribly dissimilar to Stevie's style of storytelling (although some may be much easier to figure out than in Stevie's writings) Her voice has a somewhat deep, husky quality, particularly in recent years... however her singing style is very smooth and pleasant. She has been active since the early 1970's, but her best music has been made since the mid-1980's (IMO). Her musical style is mostly in the pop/rock genre, but she often incorporates world music influences, new age stylings, ambient textures and folk/country instrumentation. To check her out, click here: http://sotd.yolasite.com/haunting-selections.php Hope you guys find something you like there! Oh and a big thanks to everyone else who's shared some of their favorites... it's fun checking them out and sharing our diverse musical tastes! Here's a picture montage I created a couple years ago for one of her songs, "Wüstensohn (Desert Son)", from her 2001 album "Es Gibt Kein Zurück (There's No Turning Back)": And here is an official video clip for a song from her 2008 album "Ruhe vor dem Sturm (Calm Before The Storm)", called "Haus überm Meer (House Above The Sea)". This song is very reminiscent of her style in the 80's.: There are translations for both songs in the above link, if you're interested! Last edited by jeffd8382; 10-27-2010 at 01:50 AM.. |

Thanks for this! I completely forgot about this song... I don't have any of Laura's stuff on CD, so I only really thought of her "Gloria" song when I would see her name.

I have another one I should have added to my list earlier. I am reminded of this song a lot lately due to Dan Savage's amazing It Gets Better Project, which was sparked by the many recent suicides of teens in the LGBTIQ community. This song makes me cry.
"Illusion" - VNV Nation Lyrics: I know its hard to tell How mixed up you feel Hoping what you need Is behind every door Each time you get hurt I don't want you to change Cuz everyone has hopes You're human after all The feeling sometimes Wishing you were someone else Feeling as though You never belong This feeling is not sadness This feeling is not joy I truly understand Please don't cry now Please don't go I want you to stay I'm begging you please Please don't leave here I don't want you to hate For all the hurt that you feel The world is just illusion Trying to change you Being like you are Well this is something else Who would comprehend That some bad do lay claim Divine purpose blesses them Thats not what I believe And it doesn't matter anyway A part of your soul Ties you to the next world Or maybe to the last But I'm still not sure But what I do know Is to us, the world is different As we are to the world I guess you would know that Please don't go I want you to stay I'm begging you please Please don't leave here I don't want you to hate For all the hurt that you feel The world is just illusion Trying to change you Please don't go I want you to stay. I'm begging you please Oh please don't leave here I don't want you to change For all the hurt that you feel This world is just illusion Always trying to change you. VNV's Ronan Harris has dedicated live performances of this song to Sophie Lancaster, a British teen who was kicked to death while trying to shield her boyfriend from getting kicked to death...for being goths. Here is a short film that was made to tell her story and support the anti-bullying foundation that her mother started in her honor, which uses another really haunting song, "Roads" by Portishead. Warning for those that might want to watch that, though - it's heartbreaking. I cry every time.

That's one of my best friend's favourite ever songs, it is a really hauntingly pretty piece.
I'd have to go with.... Zombie - The Cranberries It's such a haunting and brilliant song, I've had it on repeat all day, I only discovered it last night

Simon and Gardunkel - The Sound Of Silence
Stevie Nicks - Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You Jane Siberry - Calling All Angels (I was listening to this song when I found out that my Grandma had died, so it's still kind of off limits for me) Don Mclean - Vincent Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind R.E.M. - Sweetness Follows/Camera/Country Feedback Tori Amos - Carbon Annie Lennox - The Saddest Song I've Got Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon Grant Lee Buffallo - Happiness Elbow - Puncture Repair (Short but very moving) The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work Loudon Wainwright III - Dreaming Iron And Wine - Naked As We Came The Beatles - A Day In The Life Sarah McLachlan - Full Of Grace/Hold On Lindsey Buckingham - D.W. Suite (This one probably because I over analyse things way too much, and I know it's terrible but all I can think of when listening to the first part of the song is some kind of suicide pact) Evanescence - Hello (I always felt like the shunned kid Amy Lee was singing about when I was at school) Eurythmics - Sylvia/I Saved The World Today Dave Matthews Band - Oh (Another over analasys, but to me he sounds like he's singing to somebody who's died whom he still feels is near to him) Counting Crows - Black And Blue/Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes To Hollywood) |

It doesn't really have the "pazazz" the live version had, but it's an interesting version of the song. It definitely has more of a metal/gothy style to it, which tends to turn me off of a couple of their earlier songs. Gah. I used to actually be a Goth once upon a time. It must be one of the oddest shifts ever, to go from Goth to fully fledged Hippie. |

How Soon Is Now - The Smiths The sound is just as haunting as it gets. p.s. I believe it was covered for the theme song of Charmed

Oh, good choice. "I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar."
