Default 'Out Of The Cradle' Phonogenics 101 Podcast

Hey all,

For anyone interested here is our two hour discussion around 'Out Of The Cradle"

I humbly admit that I just never got into this album - and then preparing for this podcast i really fell in love with it. Its high status among fans is greatly deserved.

Not to give away too much lol!

It’s a flawed masterpiece. Songs are great, production is great, but it showed some of Lindsey’s technical limitations. For as good as the album is, I can’t help but feel it would have been next level if he’d had Mick and John behind him.

I used to rate the album quite highly, and it's still my favorite of Lindsey's solo albums by a considerable margin.

But in too many cases, the drum programming doesn't fit the song. If Lindsey wasn't going to use real drums, he needed someone better at programming.

I know it's a strange thing to say, but the drum machine is too stiff.

The songwriting is superb, however. The best solo album from the group members, except for probably Bella Donna (though I wouldn't argue with anyone advocating either one).

That is my beef too. I love the album and the album was released at a pivotal time in my life and it spent months in my car's tape deck. All the songs bring me back. My one pet peeve of Lindsey is his use of drum machines. Clearly there is more of that on Go Insane but it cheapens the sound. What he did on Trouble was sample a real drum beat from Mick for 4 seconds that is played on a loop throughout the song. That's fine because its a real drum sound. Lindsey is just too fascinated with technology. Its my beef with Tango In The Night. Songs like Caroline and Family Man are just too programmed for my liking. I think Everywhere is too programmed too which is why the live versions of the song are better (IMHO).
