KINDRED SPIRITS STEVIE NICKS AND CHRISSIE HYNDE TEAM TO OPEN PARK THEATER
If the touring industry has one constant, it’s the concept of classic-rock deck shuffling, with seasoned bands teaming up in different configurations each year. The concerts provide more value to fans, but too many bills tend to involve the same acts. In contrast, Stevie Nicks touring arenas this fall with the Pretenders—led by Chrissie Hynde—feels like an inspired pairing. Each woman boasts a formidable catalog of hits, and each became an icon behind a fiercely independent mind-set. Nicks had a built-in audience, given her involvement with Fleetwood Mac, but 1981 solo debut Bella Donna and 1983’s The Wild Heart possess gothic-poet vibes decidedly distinct from the megaband’s approach. Hynde’s first few albums with the Pretenders also subverted expectations: The music was tough and tender, snarling and vulnerable, which gave those LPs enduring complexity. These days, the two grapple with their respective legacy in different ways. Hynde seems driven to constantly reinvent herself as a musician. The Pretenders’ latest album, Alone, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, sounds far removed from her band’s raucous early days. The title track swaggers like a deep Stones cut, while “Gotta Wait” is a stomping fuzz-blues number. The record’s also home to sinewy garage-soul (“Roadie Man”), torch songs (the clever “I Hate Myself”) and smoldering ballads (“Death Is Not Enough”). Live, the Pretenders play plenty of hits (“Middle of the Road,” “Brass in Pocket,” “I’ll Stand by You”), but also eschew notable songs like “Night in My Veins,” “Precious” and “Talk of the Town.” Nicks isn’t resting on past achievements either, though more and more, her creative restlessness finds her excavating and reimagining gems from her career’s nooks and crannies. As its name implies, 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault features rerecorded demos of songs spanning multiple decades—highlighted by early-’80s piano boogie “Starshine” and scorching blues-rock rarity “Mabel Normand.” On this tour, Nicks has even dusted off “Crying in the Night” from her 1973 cult collaboration LP with Lindsey Buckingham, Buckingham Nicks. Embracing the most beloved aspects of her music and persona has kept Nicks relevant with loyalists, but it has also helped younger generations discover her greatness—a phenomenon captured perfectly in a recent New Yorker essay, “The Resurgent Appeal of Stevie Nicks.” As it turns out, the two women’s distinct approaches to legacy are complementary: Due to demand, the Nicks-Pretenders tour recently got extended into 2017. That popularity is a testament to the strength of their catalogs, of course—but also validates each’s decision to establish (and maintain) a career on her own terms. Stevie Nicks, Pretenders shimmer at new Park Theater
 The venue was christened with a double take, an old pro regaled by the new. “Look, it’s us,” The Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde marveled as she gazed at 20-foot-tall versions of herself and her bandmates, her voice a mix of awe and amusement as she gawked at the video screens bookending the stage and doubling as massive mirrors as they played. “Are you looking at us?” Hynde asked a bit later, wondering aloud whether the flesh-and-blood version of her band could compete with the pixilated incarnation. Granted, the question was a loaded one. Earlier, Hynde had admonished a mobile device-wielding crowd member. “Put your phone away,” she commanded during a stormy “I’ll Stand By You.” “We’re a rock band, and we want you to be with us,” she explained afterward. “It’s distracting.” Hynde blamed the disturbance on what she perceived to be an undue preoccupation with social media, two words that she spat out as if they were coated in something foul, like battery acid or, even worse, modernity. Now, we won’t brand Hynde a technophobe, it’s just that she favors the visceral and the earthy over the digital and the lavish. So it really says something that even Hynde was a bit dazzled by her surroundings as The Pretenders were the first band to take the gargantuan stage at the new Park Theater at Monte Carlo on Saturday, opening for Stevie Nicks on her “24 Karat Gold Tour.” Nicks’ latest outing was an ideal thematic fit for the Park Theater’s debut: The tour is named after her latest album, “24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault,” a collection of previously unreleased songs from throughout Nicks’ career, some of which went back four decades. For most of these tunes, Nicks explained their origins, creating a storyteller vibe that lent a casual intimacy to the evening. The Park Theater seemed designed for such an occasion. With its huge, stadium-sized stage, high-resolution projectors and towering video screens, the $90 million theater, with a maximum capacity ranging from 5,200 to 6,300 depending on the configuration, is all about making a fairly large room feel small. Nicks did her part to further shrink the distance between audience and performer with between-song ruminations akin to a friend telling you about her day over tea — or, in the case of some in this audience, a colossal 30-ounce beer. For “Belle Fleur,” a song about the trappings of celebrity dating back to the recording sessions for Nicks’ 1981 solo debut “Bella Donna,” Nicks recounted the thrill of being picked up in a limo for her first Fleetwood Mac gig, finally being able to quit her waitress and cleaning gigs and ditch her Toyota Corolla. Prior to the martial stomp of “Starshine,” she recalled the time she played an early version of the song for Tom Petty in his basement, mimicking his Floridian drawl when recollecting his approval. Before the Buckingham Nicks chestnut “Crying in the Night,” she counted back the years to the song’s birth, all 43 of them. In the case of all these “24 Karat Gold” tunes, Nicks was performing them live on tour for the first time. Same for the playful, yet poignant swing of “New Orleans,” and the haunting, beatific ballad ”Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream),” a song inspired by the “Twilight” book and film series, where Nicks’ voice pierced the tune like a knife burrowing into flesh. These rarities alternated with Nicks’ solo hits and Fleetwood Mac favorites: a lithe, frolicsome “Gypsy,” a brooding, cold-blooded “Gold Dust Woman,” which eventually built into a raga-like rhythmic intensity, a full-throated “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” where Nicks was joined by Hynde, who helped sing the parts of the song originally voiced by Tom Petty. “She’s crazy, but we like her,” Nicks, 68, said of Hynde, 65, afterward, one of the most enduring female voices in rock ‘n’ roll saluting another. Hynde did some saluting as well during The Pretenders’ invigorated set. “It’s still the best, isn’t it? A band,” she beamed after a hard-nosed “Middle of the Road.” Surrounded by the high-tech fruits of a digital age, her point was that the comparatively low-watt thrills of a group of musicians jamming together for kicks can still carry the day, her message every bit as clear and sharply focused as the images pulsating on the screens around her. FIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT STEVIE NICKS WITH THE PRETENDERS AT PARK THEATER (DECEMBER 17)
 1. For the record, the first song performed publicly at the Las Vegas Strip’s newest music venue—attached to the Monte Carlo resort (soon to be rebranded with the same Park name as the theater and adjacent outdoor plaza)—was “Alone,” the title track from the Pretenders’ latest studio album. The first hit, 1981’s “Message of Love,” arrived two numbers later. 2. The sound inside Park Theater ranged from fairly muddled for the Pretenders’ first half-dozen songs (turn up Chrissie Hynde’s vocals!; and is that slide guitarist actually playing, ’cause we can’t hear him at all) to somewhat improved midway through that opening set (Hynde sounds great, but there’s still no slide in here) to pretty pristine for Stevie Nicks’ headlining performance (which bodes well for the future). 3. The venue lays out roughly like the Colosseum at Caesars Palace or the Axis at Planet Hollywood, though it’s less ornate than the former and less comfy than the latter. The lobby’s chandeliers and the second floor’s circular patio deck are memorable touches, and two giant side-stage screens provided close views of the musicians, but the theater itself felt a bit generic for Las Vegas’ most modern concert hall. Sight lines seemed clear across the venue—unless you were seated on the flat floor and someone stood up in directly in front of you. The primo seats appear to be those in sections 201 through 205, and then working back. A few logistical quibbles: Armrest drink holders render armrests virtually useless (there’s a reason most venues build their drink holders into the backs of the seats in front of you). Concession lines looked lengthy all night, probably because there aren’t many areas set up to sell food and drinks at this point. And upstairs bathrooms are quite small, so time your visits wisely. 4. The Pretenders are one of those, “Oh, I know that song!” bands. Serious fans aside, I doubt most attendees knew they’d recognize so many tunes on Saturday—“Back on the Chain Gang,” “I’ll Stand by You,” “My City Was Gone,” “Middle of the Road” and “Brass in Pocket” among them—and the band still left some of its classic cuts (like “Talk of the Town” and “Show Me”) unplayed during a healthy 15-song set. At age 65, Hynde remains a strong singer and a magnetic presence, bringing an Elvis T-shirt and good grand-opening awareness to the stage: “Elvis played on this stage … in spirit. We’re the first band to play this stage.” She also marveled that Las Vegas will soon have hockey, and delivered this zinger during her intro of 65-year-old founding drummer Martin Chambers: “We couldn’t get Buddy Rich, because he’s dead.” 5. Nicks explained that she designed her latest solo tour to excavate deeper cuts from her catalog, and she did just that Saturday night, at one point reeling off six-consecutive non-charting songs between Fleetwood Mac classic “Gypsy” and synthy solo favorite “Stand Back.” That unorthodox approach largely succeeded, on the strength of Nicks’ still-powerful pipes (her voice sits in a lower octave these days but retains its singular, spine-tingling quality), her crack eight-piece backing band (Hynde also joined in for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around") and her folksy between-song storytelling. The 68-year-old singer occasionally got off track as she related the origins of songs like Buckingham-Nicks oldie “Crying in the Night” or newer solo composition “New Orleans,” but the loose approach brought a cozy, living-room vibe to the sold-out, 5,300-capacity room. Of course, the crowd cheered loudest for the night’s closing quartet of all-timers—“Gold Dust Woman” and “Edge of Seventeen,” and then “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” in the encore—and whenever Nicks twirled in place, proving that even in shiny new buildings on just-enlivened stretches of the Las Vegas Strip, some things never change. Stevie Nicks Takes Everyone’s Breath Away In 1975, the iconic song by Fleetwood Mac called Landslide was recorded. the song is now 42 years old, but it still young in the hearts of us fans. The song is the definition of simplistic beauty.
