If you look at that cover in a certain way, sort of blurring your eyes, it looks like Stevie's right arm is Mick's left leg, so he's just sort of standing with one leg parallel to the ground ... or is that just me?

I've never noticed that before, but I would bet that you're right! Mick's legs definitely used to be skinny enough to be arms...have you seen that Rolling Stone cover back in the 70's with the Rumours line-up all snuggled up in bed together? Mick has the longest, skinniest legs I've ever seen!

I sure did ... trust me, it wasn't Mick's legs I was concentrating on.

That's mad. I never knew that. I just thought The Dance was a cool title.

As ChiliD already stated, they wanted to use the original.

So instead, they opted to have a circular look, with 5 dancers/players. It's pretty obvious. (Except the band chose to wear clothes). lol.

I've never seen the original painting that inspired it, it can't be the same thing, is it? If so, Rousseau sure was a visionary for what would become cheesilicious 1980's looking art!
I disagree. The cover is dark and not bright. Not as bold as the tendency of colors in the 80's. The colors also look like they were originally from oil, as the Rousseau paintings were. Below is an example. The TITN cover is subdued just like his work. You can also see the similarity in the foliage. The following piece by Rousseau is called The Snake Charmer (1907). Obviously it is with this particular work that the cover for TITN was born.

I like this better than the Tango cover, although it's still not my cup of tea as far as art goes.

Ok, side by side.

And, with the magic of MS Paint:

Thanks or posting Chili.

SEE Richard! Those colors! Totally airbrushed! I'm not a fan of airbrushed art, mainly because it makes me think of...you guessed it....the 80's! I'm sorry, I just don't like art that looks like this! I guess I like grittier, more realistic looking stuff I'm also usually more a fan of photography than paintings anyway.

I don't, either. All this Rousseau-derived puff-puff. I wish the band had used some metallic, noisy German deco painting for its album cover ... something like this:

. . . or this masterpiece of German romanticism by Friedrich:

Isn't this a Supertramp album cover already?

I actually like how the TITN album cover looks. it may be airbrushed, but the colors, to me, are really beautiful. I wouldn't have like the actual art piece to be the cover...that fluteplayer creeps me out and the colors look a little washed out for an album cover.
