Fleetwood Mac collectible is bait for a big donor

In his first presidential race, Bill Clinton adopted what would become his anthem: Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop,” which he still uses today.

State Sen. Ted Lieu, running to replace retiring Rep. Henry Waxman, is perhaps trying to capture some of the magic of that decades-old campaign by offering a creative inducement to potential donors.

In a recent letter, Lieu, a Democrat, noted that his Republican rival Elan Carr has been able to amass a significant amount of campaign money and was designated by the national GOP as a “Young Gun.” In other words, this is no landslide.

The letter, which notes Fleetwood Mac is from the coastal Los Angeles district, goes on to offer one randomly selected donor “a very rare and very collectible quadruple-platinum award for the band’s album, ‘The Dance.’ ” It continues, “the gorgeous, RIAA-certified custom plaque was never available to a store and was awarded to the president of their record label, who now works at Blue America.”

Blue America, a website for Democratic activists, also noted that its president considers the band’s sound “perfect for Ted’s district, where several of the band members live.”
