'70s rockers perform in Melbourne

By Breuse Hickman
FLORIDA TODAY

Leon Russell and Dave Mason have each been called a term often reserved for artists whose looks have deemed them to appear on fewer than five magazine covers a year: The musician's musician.
More accurately, the term befits music makers whose technical prowess offers too many subtleties for average listeners of, say, classic rock to appreciate.

So fans of Russell and Mason can breathe a sigh of relief that both came up during the '70s, when artist development actually existed.

That was back when musicians could scrounge a pretty good living teetering between solo projects or residing in the background as session musicians and still maintain a healthy fan base.

Russell began his career in the '60s playing guitar, bass and keyboards for producer Phil Spector, and worked mostly behind the scenes writing songs and playing instruments for artists such as Delaney and Bonnie, Joe Cocker, the Byrds and even Herb Alpert.

In the '70s, he scored with his own solo albums as well as hit singles that included 1972's "Tightrope."

Mason began his career as a roadie for the Spencer Davis Group before teaming up with Stevie Winwood and Jim Capaldi to form Traffic.

Mason was only 18. Traffic is still a Mason reference point, even though he left the band before he was 21.

Mason was coming up on the '70s when image still took a back seat to musical output.

As a solo artist, most of Mason's albums sold poorly. Despite that, he continued to enjoy sold-out shows, including gigs at Madison Square Garden.

In the '90s, Mason quit touring and sought privacy at a friend's guesthouse.

That friend, Mick Fleetwood, persuaded him to join the ailing Fleetwood Mac sans Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.
Like Russell, Mason continues to tour. This isn't the first time they have shared the same stage, not to mention the recording studio.

Smile DM IN CONCERT

Sounds great Karen, thanks for that

I must admit, I'm kinda envious as I haven't seen DM live yet. I wish Dave would play up in MA (or at least in New England somewhere) but it seems the closest he'll come is NJ/NY and I might be able to scrape enough money togther to go see him in CT or whatever but NY/NJ is too far for me, moneywise.

It's been said on the message board on his site www.dave-mason.com that he doesn't play Boston anymore because the turn out isn't that great but I understand that the last time he played around here was in 1997 at Harper's Ferry but I heard there was only like two seconds notice for this gig as it was added at the last second so I hope these facts are taken in to consideration when the thought comes up in his camp about booking gigs in NE (I heard he was playing with Gary Wright (of "Dream weaver" fame, Spooky Tooth, etc.) at the Mohegan Sun casino in CT in Sept. last year but once again with short notice and I heard it was going to be televised so I figured I'd tape it but it never was aired (in my area to my knowledge anyways, any one got a copy?) and I heard from those that did go that he was just backing up GW on some of his songs ("Love is alive" etc.) as it was just a short set).

Well at least if he's playing down your way, hopefully this will mean he'll consider other areas that he hasn't played in for a while, I'm hoping so anyways!

John

Hi John,

To be honest, I didn't even know he was going to be in town until I saw the article in the morning paper. I would have liked it if there was some advanced notice about it, but I guess I just wasn't looking for it. Now, I can't go since my mother is in town for a visit.

I'll post a review of the performance when it comes out.
